On the other hand, some med schools specifically say they won't do it:

This list may be tricky to verify. Wouldn't their "receptiveness" be dependent at least in part on your application? To really get a good sense of each school's receptiveness, it seems you would have to have the same person apply to all the schools and send such an email. Otherwise, you might have someone with a 3.3 GPA getting no response, while the 4.0 with the stellar MCAT and top-journal publications is getting warm welcomes. I'm assuming you're talking about sending these emails after you've already applied to said schools.
If you get a response that starts with, "Thank you for your continued interest in ..." chances are it belongs on the 'not' list.
But couldn't one person get such a reply just because they're not very high up on the school's list? Maybe they're qualified enough to avoid flatly denying, but the school has plenty of better applicants? Perhaps a more qualified applicant would get a very different response with the same "in the area" email.
I sent one two years ago and got a rejection letter within hours.

bursted out in laughterI sent one two years ago and got a rejection letter within hours.
I sent an ITA and got an interview. When I arrived, it turned out to be their last one of the season, so...I'm assuming that my chances were increased because otherwise who knows if I'd even have been interviewed? Will sending an ITA email positively affect one's admission changes? Will someone who was probably going to receive a December interview get pushed up to one in October?
Not sure if this would pose useful in 2019, but something similar might be an idea ? ...
Finally someone responds ....Yes it would be great if people would post updates/additions to this list!
Mount Sinai- upload the update to the portal
Yes but I already got rejected so I don't care anymore.Is USC-keck?
Do you think its worth sending an ITA email to USC-Keck if I will be in northern California (I guess like 300 miles away) in January? Thing is, I am flying from the East Coast so I rather not make multiple trips. Also, they havent rejected me even though I was complete super early there. Maybe yield protection and a ITA might help to show interest?
