Incoming M1 c/o 2020 Back to school thread

Not going to lie ... I feel slightly less panicked knowing that I'm not the only one who has blocked out Orgo and Biochem.

Def hold onto your biochem knowledge-base. There are some NBME questions that you'd be surprised to be able to answer just from a basic biochem background.

Addendum: Not that I've been looking at any NBME questions or anything...

So I'm moving into the heart of Packer country (their fans are the WORST). As a die hard Minnesota Vikings fan, my biggest stressor right now is how I'm going to be able to watch the games! Looked at "NFL LEAGUE PASS" last night, but you don't get to watch the game until after its finished...

I know you posted this forever ago but I just found this thread. We are moving across the country as well (34 hours). Idk what you drive but we decided to buy a cargo trailer, use it for the move, and just sell it again once we get out there. Also, I think it will be nice to have it for a few days out there while we are getting some new furniture, etc.
this would be nice, except none of our cars have tow bars installed and only one has towing ability in general (albeit only 2k #)
🙁🙁

We bought it last year and I highly, highly do not suggest. Waste of money.

I at least kept my notes from Biochem; I'm hoping that the corresponding knowledge is buried somewhere in the dark recesses of my brain. However, until August rolls around, the only things I'm thinking about are surfing, recreational reading, and sleep.

Yea I think all of the other services require a cable subscription

Conversely, you could always stream free off one of those sketch ass websites haha

Recreational sleeping is more like it haha

How much are you looking at to ship your car? I'm thinking about similar things but leaning towards not bringing my car until later...

On the same boat with working out. I've been trying to get myself to start running but I come up with a lot of excuses lol. SDN running buddies support group?
I was looking at the services available on uship. Basically it's like truckers who drop their loads in your area need to pay for the trip back so they haul your car. NorCal to Midwest is like 800-1000 bucks depending on where you look.

Also yeah, the exercise struggle is real man. I've been taking what I call "The MCAT Approach" to it where I look for advice on how to get good and call it a day haha

Decided to stop lurking and post here as well. 🙂

The spouse and I are doing a 26 hr drive with our SUV and a U-haul trailer. Buying the majority of our furniture once we arrive. We looked at a lot of options and this one was the thriftiest considering shipping the car and hiring a moving company would be several grand. We are paying $1400 for a 1 BR+den condo.

I've been slacking on running as well, although the 115 deg temps in Arizona right now are not very conducive to working out...definitely looking forward to more temperate weather in the Midwest.

@teeayejay (or any current students/people who have done this)

I was actually thinking about old notes lately since I have a stash of biochem and neuro papers I have yet to sort...how often do you actually refer to old notes if you do look at them? I have online material but I'm seriously thinking about throwing away my paper stash since I don't think I'll have the patience to sort them out.

Meh, I'd say throw them out. You're going to have to essentially relearn a bit anyway (including how you organize) and it might be too much to try and incorporate old ways and habits. The most notes you'll probably need before your block in medschool is already in your head. You'd be surprised at how much of it comes back to you.

the med school I'm going to is located in a college campus town: $520 for a single bd/ba!

In all seriousness, I am very worried about jumping back into studying (firehose, pancakes, etc...) since I am 3 years out from undergrad. Anyone have any tips? Or just try to stay focused?

It totally worked for me that I have been a Steeler fan my whole life and now I am moving to Pittsburgh. Phew...

Same boat here. From what I've heard, don't worry about it for now and look into anki if you've got time.

I'm 3 years out and worried as well! I'm definitely hoping it's like riding a bike haha

LOL, I'll be surrounded by all two of the Dolphins fans...I'd actually love to be approached by either one of them.

@Temporary Superman Grats on Tulane. I worked with a doc who absolutely loved his medschool and got me really interested in it.

ITT We post our back to school plans/shopping lists and talk about our feelings.😳

Cold feet, anybody?

Before the craziness starts, I'm still trying to get a few things straight. My school's facebook page is already buzzing with tidbits, specialty club solicitations, random encouragements, intramural sports team promotions, and links to "legal" copies of ebooks.

Also, I'm 95% percent sure that I should be getting some kind of giant white board to do my scribbles and studying.

It's pretty crazy to think about how I'll be throwing all my stuff into a crappy civic and driving across the country to start a new life studying and working non-stop. At the same time, I am stoked out of my mind just imagining all the people I will meet, and the new things I'll see...and cadavers!

How far is everyone along in packing up, finding apartments, getting situated etc?
I think the incoming M1s should contribute to the Medical School Achievements thread. There are multiple achievements that need to be created for M1 year.

Have been super stressed lately since I am moving my stuff down to philly next Saturday.

Was able to have a successful yard sale today ($300 profit) and get rid of a lot of junk that I've accumulated/has been accumulated in my house by people who have lived here over the years.

Also started doing weight watchers (per moms suggestion so I don't gain a million pounds in school) and I've lost 7lbs in just 3 weeks!

Trying to get everything in order for school has proven to be exhausting.

I've gotta get my TB test read tomorrow, and my vac. history sent by Monday, after that I can relax until mid July when I start to realize that all of my **** isn't going to fit into my honda civic.

We've got to focus on the important things, like how we all get another free year of Amazon Prime with our new student emails!

Sent from my phone, I apologize for any typos or brevity.
Is it still free ? I wound up paying like 110$ or something this year.

Free for 6mo for students, only $70 for the year normally, I thought?

Huh, looks like you're right...I must be remembering an old reassure!

Depending when your renewal was you may have gotten the prices before they increased them 😉

BANANAFISH I HAVE BEEN WATCHING YOUR STATUS FOR WEEKS WHEN DID YOU GET IN?? WHERE?? I have been rooting for you dude!!!! I'm going to need a link to the announcement of this just so that I can sit there and ceremoniously click "like"
Thank you so much! Sorry, I completely missed this when you posted it. I'm going to Rush which is an absolute dream come true. It was my number one pick by several orders of magnitude, so it's funny how life works sometimes. I printed out my Rush waitlist email and hung it on my refrigerator so I never let it go to my head or forget how close it came.

I am also struggling with guilt over rent, but it's just my area. I moved away from San Antonio five years ago and rent was about $450-$500 for a single. Now it's $750, not including utilities. I've been told this is pretty average (and it's only a five minute walk to class), but when did my city get so expensive? People need to stop moving to Texas.

Guilty, I've already signed up for my free 6 months

I'm leaving Cleveland for the last time in 10 days. I'm so sad. I don't want to go 🙁

$450?!?!? I'd sell my soul to pay $1000:boom:

I contacted Amazon customer service and they just told me to email them my acceptance letter to med school so I can continue on Amazon Prime for students, which is only $49/year 🙂
There should be an option to get the 6 month student Amazon prime (as long as you have a .edu email). I just set up a new free student prime last week (the free prime doesn't have tv included if you want that as well)

anyone else doing any music festivals this summer?

I just got back from one and am super sad that I won't have the time/funds to do another in the forseable future 🙁

How are you guys extending the Amazon prime? I started mine in the July after my freshman year of UG (graduated 2015), and I tried to extend it with my med school acceptance. But Amazon said that the student rate is only good for four years max.

I get unlimited .edu emails from Case (which I get to keep even though I graduated) so I just do the 6 month trial over and over again hehe.

Wait, can we change them? Because the "automatically sub in an X instead of asking your middle name" thing is really upsetting.

You can't change them 🙁 You have a ton to begin with (abc123, first.last, etc.) and then you can also create "aliases" that are @case.edu.
But you have a middle name and you've still got an X? That's so weird.

A sizeable portion of our entering med school class seems to have that...I wonder if it's something to do with the timeline of when they register us vs contact us, etc. It's horrible, I loathe my Case ID. I am not an axc123, I'm abc gorrammit!

Interesting! I was always so proud that I was only #5 haha most people I know have 3 numbers after their initials.

I'm inordinately upset about the X. Like, I would actually pay them a decent fee to change my Case ID, it bothers me that much. Like if they were calling me by the wrong name for 4yrs (and at a place that prides itself on paying attention to preferred names and nicknames).
