Incoming M1 c/o 2020 Back to school thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm paying $1275/mo, utilities included (though Internet is separate) because I'm choosing to live in a 1-bedroom at least for the first year. As I've told several of my friends, if you want to get a hold of me, you can find me at IKEA/dumpster diving for furniture and getting creative with instant ramen. Or not. #MonopolyMoneyMentality

Have you heard of the app "letgo"? It's a super easy app where people sell/buy stuff. We just picked up a nice couch last night in Boston for 60$

How much as ya'll paying for housing? It looks like I will be paying about $800 for a 2 bedroom apartment (total rent is $1600) in a Southwestern suburb.
$850/mo including utilities. It's a 2 bedroom apartment (it's 850 each). I know I probably could have found a cheaper place, especially since it's Cincinnati, but honestly I've always had a pretty high standard of living and I feel like medical school is not a very good time to experiment with living in a really crappy place for the first time, if that makes sense.

Ugh, lucky. If I have to be out without the spouse, I'm looking at 11-1500 a month before utilities for a studio / maybe 1br

Congratulations to all the incoming M1's. You guys are stellar and I hope that you spend the time to appreciate yourselves before starting in September. When your studies get hard remember that you are an investment that will become an important contributor to the community around you. M1 can seem hypoxic if you've spent your time really loving a hands-on medical experience, however keep your head up and remember that rotations are right around the corner. I have a deep respect for those that have gotten this far and especially to the non-trads who got here with only one pair of black socks. God bless and best wishes.

I will be moving into a 2000sqft house for 1575 a month (split between me and my boyfriend, so ~800 a month). Super excited for the affordable living in Pittsburgh. Bye Bye Los Angeles!!!

$500 a month for a 3 bad/3 bath home. It's also a 5 minute bike ride from campus, but I'm not sure if I can handle biking in ~115 heat.

What is everyone's chilling plan for before school starts?
I'm not making crazy travel plans because lol $

Any good cheap relaxation ideas? How are you going to make the most of your time off?

I'm taking a big international trip and THEN I'll be unemployed for a month so I'm going to learn to cook a few new dishes, perfect some good "cook ahead" meals to have for my husband and I once school gets crazy. Maybe I'll go super crazy and stock the freezer, but I do prefer fresh food.

Other plans include: work out, actually using my library card and reading, and playing with my dog.

jealous, I just started looking and I'm super overwhelmed...not familiar with the new city I'm moving to at all.

Also, I'm still trying to decide if I want to seek out roommates or just live on my own. So. Many. Decisions.
my hand was forced since I couldn't afford to live in a single studio without a roommate to split the cost.

Moving from San Diego to the Bronx so it'll be a long trip... I think I'm on the sell all my stuff and buy it there boat. I have a lot of instruments I wanted to bring, but the cost of shipping or bringing them with me was approaching their current value (so hey, upgrade time right?) Thankfully rent will be cheap... looking at around 500 for my own room, utilities included (subsidized housing woo)

I'm with @Dr Tony T. Chopper on playing Overwatch, road trippin', subbing comic con for anime expo though, and running instead of lifting :horns: I'm too poor to actually fly anywhere haha

I smell a fellow Triton. UCSD?

Lol I'm dreading that "getting to know each other" part of orientation where we all share what we did over the summer...I feel like everyone else is travelling and doing other awesome things, and I'm in Mistake on the Lake working at an ice cream shop. Not that it's not fun, I love it, but it sounds so boring.

I loathe "getting to know each other" games. I just want to talk to people like one does in a civilized society.

I remember at my Case interview we all had to share one interesting fact about ourselves and everyone else was freaking amazing and I was just like lol I speak Spanish.
At one of my interviews we did that and this one girl straight-up said that she couldn't think of an interesting fact. The admissions dean just went, "Oh, um, okay..." and it was super awkward.

I remember on an interview we were supposed to just give our name, our major, and where we were from. I was one of the first and did exactly that, yet, as it went around the room, it gradually became required info + grandstanding about yourself and your accomplishments. It was simultaneous a moment of internal panic that I wasn't memorable and an internal eye roll that people were giving their life stories.

Lol i had a similar experience at Case. I was one of the first to say an interesting fact, and mine lasted all of 30 seconds. Everyone else managed to drag on for 3 minutes

Lucky enough that my rent with everything included is only $230 for a brownstone in philly about a block from campus.

Using this as an excuse to buy some more fun/cheap things to make my room feel more homey.

Have a pretty boring summer ahead. Working until the 23rd of June the moving my stuff down to school. Taking a week vacation in July in Mexico which I'm excited about though!

BANANAFISH I HAVE BEEN WATCHING YOUR STATUS FOR WEEKS WHEN DID YOU GET IN?? WHERE?? I have been rooting for you dude!!!! I'm going to need a link to the announcement of this just so that I can sit there and ceremoniously click "like"

I'll be working up until mid-July, we havent been able to pay off all of the interview trail debt yet. (Grrr, damn you flights). Spouse says I can just bolt now and get away from this horrible place, but I know I'd be disappointed in myself for taking the easy way out.
I imagine I'll be in B'more in late July/early Aug, so just eat, lift, play video games, and sleep beyond that. Tutor my brother in organic on the side -_-
I'm super nervous about potentially finding housing in July. Everything is so up in the air... might have to do month-to-month leases. Also having my GSD with me is problematic due to breed restrictions basically everywhere (she's certified in a bunch of stuff, but they don't care. Stereotyping BS). It'll be interesting.

Luckily my tuition is significantly lower than other schools so I'm splurging on a 1300/month 1 br condo a 5 minute walk from both campus and downtown nightlife. Utilities, furnished, and parking included makes me feel better about going nuts on a nicer place.

Just found this and wanted to catch up
Who else is moving across the entire country, one coast to another? Road trip!
:hello:Nearly coast to coast. Google Maps approximates 32 hours, but I doubt that includes regular stops. 2200miles without detours!
Whats your damage?
I made the LA to Boston trip end of April with 2 cats and a wife. 3200 miles in 46 hours with three stops along the way [Albuquerque, Little Rock, Charlottesville]. It was roughly 12-13 hours/day the first 3 days and then 8 the last. Add on losing an hour each day and it's brutal and boring. If you haven't done it yet, get an audible account and some books on tape.

-----
Also, if anyone has an older MacBook Pro that isn't a Retina display, you may not need to get a new computer, just upgrade the memory, RAM and battery. I did that for mine and it only cost around $250.

Ah, I thought you meant 46hrs by the calendar, not drive time, and was impressed. We did Ch'ville to SF in just under 48hrs and it was a marathon with 2 drivers, a dog, and my grandma for moral support...couldn't imagine doing the same without a 3rd person to keep the drivers' heads in the game!

just curious what the people here, who aren't moving with significant others, are thinking/doing for living situations. Roommates? Living alone?

Roommates, but who the hell knows because it's so fast and I'm moving from far out of the area.

Planning on living with some other M1s for roommates, both to save money and because I honestly prefer living with others rather than alone.

Not living with complete strangers anymore, so I'm going to live alone first year and probably move in with friends afterwards.

Absolutely living alone, prefer to cut back in other areas.

Anticipate it will be stressful enough without someone else's dirty dishes in the sink, clothes abandoned in the wash machine or girlfriend on the sofa.

school starts in 2 months, and I am already having nightmares that I missed some sort of deadline. A month ago I was all excited to quit work, relocate, start school, etc. But the closer it gets to the date, the more scared and nervous I am. 😱 *freaking out mode* scared.
Anyone else feels the same?

$500-ish for 3br/2ba (SO is paying $700 bc no loans lol)

Same here. My classes' Facebook page is already filled with first year students asking for PowerPoint slides and supplemental texts and I'm over here in Hawaii. I don't know if I'm going to be in the proper mindset by the time school starts.

Lucky at least you are in Hawaii! I am just sitting here and watching Scrubs lol, yes Netflix still here after 3 hours.

But to all seriousness, I just got back from an awesome camping trip, our first one of the season! Trying to jam in as many hiking/camping/road trips as possible before the school starts.

Not sure where I'm going to be living this year.

The cheapest places are literally a room in a house for like $450 a month.

Then one step up is sharing a 3 BR house with 2 other people which ends up being $500-$550 a month before utilities

a 2 BR house is like $700-750 a month and then a studio is $1100 a month.

I'm thankful the area around my school has a relatively low cost of living, but I still don't think I can justify paying for a studio. Probably going to end up in a 2 BR with a roommate since living with 1 other person is probably the max i'd be willing to put up with. I still feel guilty about the cost though compared to a 3 BR house.
