I was shadowing an urologist the other day, and he was doing a biopsy on a male patient. He first had to drain the patient's bladder, so he inserted this long catheter up the patient's you know what.
At that point I just had to avert my eyes. I never knew something like that could go up there. I mean, things come out, not in.
Just curious, anybody have any experiences like this?

Have you ever read about small fish swimming up the you know what? There is an entry hole you know.

But the vagina has ... an opening. The opening in the penis isn't nearly as big. Just the thought of inserting something up there makes me queasy.

EDIT: I'd assume that the female urethra isn't as bad either. Penis is just ... eeek.

Why would you assume the female urethra isn't as bad? It isn't very big either (It isn't the hole babies come out of. Though I don't know its diameter compared to a man's).

To the OP: Did you really not know that they put catheters into the urethra?

HA. I straight cath'd a guy about a week ago. It's easy. The nurses are really cool about letting me do stuff beyond my job description (I'm a PCA).

It's easy to do a male, but some patients are a lot more uncomfortable about catheterization than others... for good reason I suppose.

And about that fish... I watched a tv special on tlc or something that said that was a freak thing - that the fish is not known for swimming up urethras and that it hasn't happened since that one poor guy.

I know you'll probably feel queasy about this but:

Sometime in the future you should have it done to you, just so you know what it feels like. Obviously with every procedure having it done to you isn't really applicable (No one is going to have open heart surgery just to see "what it feels like") but a catheter is very easy to do and it might help.

then again, it might freak you out even more.

The first couple of times I saw a catheter put in place, the person doing it asked me if I could handle it. I didn't really understand the question, because I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Most things like this just don't bother me.

In terms of male vs female, I imagine they are about equally uncomfortable. Also, I don't think there is any way I would get one put in just so I can know what its like, that would be crazy.

I think you can just watch a few to get used to it. Doing this just to see how it feels is a dumb idea. I can already see the headlines

I work in the ED and this happens about 25 times per day. You get pretty used to it.

Agreed. ALL med students are going to put in their share of foleys, both in men and women. So you get used to it.

And no, you don't want to try it to know what it feels like -- it's a big infection risk and should only be put in there if there's a medical need.

The thing that has freaked me out the most when shadowing has definitely been circumcisions. The doc was so deft and quick..and that baby was not a happy camper. I actually felt a bit nauseous for the first one I observed; it was a bleeder...they got easier to watch, though and I actually felt myself getting interested in the procedure itself. Shadowing kicks a**.

I've only witnessed one circumcision, but the baby's bloodcurdling screams and the doctor's nonchalance were pretty disturbing. 🙁

Yeah I watched a circ, but still it didn't disturb me as much as the catheter.

I wouldn't actually do it to myself...that would just be dumb. I think there was an episode of House where he did that.

I think most guys are going to be worrying too much about having a long tube inserted in their manhood than focusing on your physique, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Gentlemen can correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm a PCT, and I regularly stick foleys and in/out caths up peoples' "you know what." So yes, I've had experiences like that. Fortunately, I've never been on the receiving end.

Same here. Erggg we had a patient two weeks ago that was a little on the crazy end and when the nurse told him they were going to remove his foley he just pulled it out himself... If anybody knows the feature on the end of the foley line once inserted then you'll understand why I felt pain myself just from hearing that. I honestly rather have a line put in surgically through my pelvis than to have something shoved up my urethra. General concensus from patients is that it doesn't hurt though, just a very weird feeling.

Ouch! Whenever we take out a foley, we have to remember the phrase "deflate the bomb." I can hardly imagine just pulling it out (though it's happened)...it's called "the bomb" for a reason.
