I was shadowing an urologist the other day, and he was doing a biopsy on a male patient. He first had to drain the patient's bladder, so he inserted this long catheter up the patient's you know what.
At that point I just had to avert my eyes. I never knew something like that could go up there. I mean, things come out, not in.:scared:
Just curious, anybody have any experiences like this?

lol. Dude, if stuff can come out the way it does, stuff sure can go in. Have you ever read about small fish swimming up the you know what? There is an entry hole you know.

HA! Get used to sayin' penis honey 🙂 I feel ya though.. theres some things that I can't stand to watch but if it's a procedure being done on me, I can watch the whole thing, no matter what it is. That confuses me.

But the vagina has ... an opening. The opening in the penis isn't nearly as big. Just the thought of inserting something up there makes me queasy. :scared:

EDIT: I'd assume that the female urethra isn't as bad either. Penis is just ... eeek.

👍 haha wait untill you have to do foleys!!!!

man I would freak out if a fish swam up my vagina or urethra 👎

Why would you assume the female urethra isn't as bad? It isn't very big either (It isn't the hole babies come out of. Though I don't know its diameter compared to a man's).

To the OP: Did you really not know that they put catheters into the urethra?

Ah, the noble Candiru.

This fish is also known to attack humans and animals and swim into an orifice (the urethra, anus, or vagina).[4] Because of spines protruding from the fish, it is almost impossible to remove except through surgery.[8] Though there have been documented candiru attacks on humans,[9] there is no evidence the fish can survive once inside a human. The danger for the person lies more in the infection and shock that results from having the organism lodged in sensitive tissues for an extended period of time than from physical damage done by the actual fish itself.

HA. I straight cath'd a guy about a week ago. It's easy. The nurses are really cool about letting me do stuff beyond my job description (I'm a PCA).

It's easy to do a male, but some patients are a lot more uncomfortable about catheterization than others... for good reason I suppose.

And about that fish... I watched a tv special on tlc or something that said that was a freak thing - that the fish is not known for swimming up urethras and that it hasn't happened since that one poor guy.

I knew, but I really felt queasy watching it.

I know you'll probably feel queasy about this but:

Sometime in the future you should have it done to you, just so you know what it feels like. Obviously with every procedure having it done to you isn't really applicable (No one is going to have open heart surgery just to see "what it feels like") but a catheter is very easy to do and it might help.

then again, it might freak you out even more.

Hell to the no. The only way anyone is ever going to cath me is if I am unconscious or it is completely and utterly necessary for me to live/my well being.

lol

I would try it. Especially if it was something that bothered me when I watched it happen to another person (it doesn't though).

Just wait until you have to fillet that "you know what" up the middle during anatomy lab first year!

The first couple of times I saw a catheter put in place, the person doing it asked me if I could handle it. I didn't really understand the question, because I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Most things like this just don't bother me.

In terms of male vs female, I imagine they are about equally uncomfortable. Also, I don't think there is any way I would get one put in just so I can know what its like, that would be crazy.

haha just wait until you have to put a foley in an old guy with a swollen prostate. Or better yet an old guy with a swollen prostate with a shattered femur requiring him to be somewhat on his side. FUN FUN

I hope you don't get any stones. That might make things a little difficult for you.

Anyway, a catheter in a female is nothing compared to a male. The distance and curves of the male urinary tract make things much more difficult (and painful) for the patient.

Bajingo, Hoo-Hoo, Peepers, Shwing-Shwong, Peep. Who are you Dr. Reid?

I think you can just watch a few to get used to it. Doing this just to see how it feels is a dumb idea. I can already see the headlines

"Young premedical student injures privates performing procedure 'to get used to it'"

I work in the ED and this happens about 25 times per day. You get pretty used to it.

Agreed. ALL med students are going to put in their share of foleys, both in men and women. So you get used to it.

And no, you don't want to try it to know what it feels like -- it's a big infection risk and should only be put in there if there's a medical need.

Wait until you insert a GU Sound

Then come and talk to me.

Haha

I have both seen and experienced catheters...and was very interested in both. The nurses had to tell me to sit back because they actually couldn't insert the thing properly while I was trying to watch.

The thing that has freaked me out the most when shadowing has definitely been circumcisions. The doc was so deft and quick..and that baby was not a happy camper. I actually felt a bit nauseous for the first one I observed; it was a bleeder...they got easier to watch, though and I actually felt myself getting interested in the procedure itself. Shadowing kicks a**.

I've only witnessed one circumcision, but the baby's bloodcurdling screams and the doctor's nonchalance were pretty disturbing. 🙁

Yeah I watched a circ, but still it didn't disturb me as much as the catheter.

I wouldn't actually do it to myself...that would just be dumb. I think there was an episode of House where he did that.

I kind of like pain...weird thing to say I know but still... I don't think I'd freak out much if I had to get it done.

So...wait, I'm a little curious about the mechanics here.

Say I'm a rather attractive young lady (or maybe I'm not, but pretend that I am)...isn't there gonna be some...interference if I start grabbing his "you know what".

How does one deal with a thing like that??? 😕😕

😳

I think most guys are going to be worrying too much about having a long tube inserted in their manhood than focusing on your physique, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Gentlemen can correct me if I'm wrong.

Haha, yeah, I really hope you're right cause all I can think is that'd be SUPER SUPER awkward.

All I know for sure is the last few times I touched a guy's manhood, his manhood was standing at attention...

did you also happen to be holding a hollow latex tube in your left hand and some betadine scrub in the other? Great way to kill the moment

:laugh::laugh::laugh: Touche, touche. Well-played.

There's nothing wrong with safe, in the case very safe, sex practices.

I wonder what instructions women (and men?) get in medical school about "what to do if a guy is standing at attention" and you need to examine him...

I mean, if you're a beautiful female urologist and all you do all day is stare at them all day...surely once in a while, a patient will be perkier than usual.

Wouldn't that make it a little easier for you? I mean, it's already being supported... so you'd have an extra hand free

"And how are we today? Ah, I see you're not here for a Viagra prescription..."

Ah, Mr. Thompson, I see you have a little swelling down there. Well, I can take care of that. (Remove from pocket very large needle, grin)

i am in love with this thread.

Yeah... right until the prostate exam... which is where the fun stops.

I'm a PCT, and I regularly stick foleys and in/out caths up peoples' "you know what." So yes, I've had experiences like that. Fortunately, I've never been on the receiving end.

Same here. Erggg we had a patient two weeks ago that was a little on the crazy end and when the nurse told him they were going to remove his foley he just pulled it out himself... If anybody knows the feature on the end of the foley line once inserted then you'll understand why I felt pain myself just from hearing that. I honestly rather have a line put in surgically through my pelvis than to have something shoved up my urethra. General concensus from patients is that it doesn't hurt though, just a very weird feeling.

oh ouch!

I don't know...from what I've seen, it can be pretty painful, especially for guys...

Ouch! Whenever we take out a foley, we have to remember the phrase "deflate the bomb." I can hardly imagine just pulling it out (though it's happened)...it's called "the bomb" for a reason.
