Anyone have an idea when the scores will be released this year?

our PD said they are scoring the exams in a new way...I kind of zoned out, but something about looking at each answer by hand...seems silly. But the long and short of it is, a month from now.

they should grade the exam by automated scantron and examine each question which a significant portion of applicants miss but that should take ~1 month tops. ~3 months to get an exam back is ridiculous.

Yup, especially when I am waiting for the damn test result to start moonlighting.

Do we just get them from our program or how does it work

How's the scores turning out for everyone? Still havent seen any mention of mine:scared:

I actually did much better than I thought I would have, especially given how ambiguous some of the questions seemed. It did mention that the raw score did not take experimental questions into account, so I guess there's that. So -- don't stress! 😛

I received my score but no other data at this point. What was the national average, passiing score?

You can easily raise your score. Once you get over a certain grade I feel like it all comes down to lucky guessing, but my grade went up 7 points from first year. Just keep working on it!

I got a 90% raw score (PGY-1), so hopefully I can not go down for next year! For the MS4 who asked about inservice scores, don't worry about it. I read a bit, listened to podcasts on my commute and tried to learn as much as I could when I was in the hospital. Best of luck to everyone!

got a 99% even though i stayed up partying all night beforehand and didn't even look at any images or read half the stems.. feeling depressed because I probably won't be able to get a 100% next year..

Do you think I can find a locums job with down trending inservice scores?

so my score sucked.
not sure the result reflects my knowledge base, but maybe it does.

Do a lot of reading and I think I am knowledgeable about the topics I have really looked into. Part of my issue is that I may know quite a bit about some things (more than average for an intern), but probably have other areas that I don't know much about.

Since EM requires a very broad knowledge base, i'm lacking in some areas.

My goal was to conquer topics as I can, maybe more slowly due to more in depth review.

I think this plan may not be the best.

Maybe I should try a different approach. Learning the vital things about every thing first and then go back and learn more details.

For the exam itself, I probably need to do more questions as well.

I didn't really do any exam specific prep this year, other than my reading as above.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Do lots of practice questions like "PEER."

LIke a lot of things in medicine there is what you need to know for practice, and what you need to know for the test. Often different things. Also it's confusing that the mindset is different from step 1/2/3. In the steps you get a question step "Rose gardener with a red, hot, finger...."

You're thinking of sporothirx?

On the EM boards they want you to think "gram positive strep/staph infection is the most common skin infection, so that's the most likely answer, even if the guy works with roses"

Etc.

Also important to remember that it takes about 5-10 years for something to go from hot topic in a journal, to repeated studies, to practice guidelines to text book to test. Maybe more.

So you almost have to think "what was the standard of care 2-3 years ago." Like you still need to know about TPA for AMI even though very few places are still doing that. And that super sexy "using the bougie to put in a chest tube" isn't on the test.

Also remember to look at your score against those in your class, and those of the same level. Everyone takes the same test, so you are being scored against 3rd years as well. So a 75% for an intern isn't terrible.

If your inservice scores demonstrate knowledge gaps, then, sure, study those portions, use Peer VIII to re-test yourself, etc.

If your inservice score predicts 99% ABEM pass, stop studying textbooks are start exploring controversies in the primary literature (unless, I guess, your residency gives out prizes and you need to get a prize). I leveled off after PGY-2 and couldn't care less.

👍👍 I love controversies and try to challenge the underclassmen to argue something that actually interests me. If you are quoting tintinelli or rosens you're probably good for the boards....but at least 10yrs behind modern emergency medicine.
