Intelligent life in the Universe?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I read part of it, but that is a LONG read...

Personally, I think it's possible, even quite probable, that there's other life out there. The universe is huge and what we know of it is limited to our small bubble of study. I mean, think about it. What we can really study in depth is so limited in comparison to the massive size of the universe. Isn't it a bit conceited to assume that we're all the life that there is?

I am confident that there is some sort of scientific explanation that will eventual come about that will answer this.

Zona's conclusion - The scientific proof/evidence for the natural origin of life could be out there, we just haven't found it yet. From reading the thread I gather that I and many other are open minded to this, and believe this is plausible.

Mind you, though I'm not religious myself, I'm not about to argue against God, gods, or religion in general. But don't let's pretend that there's scientific evidence for it.
No "scientific evidence" that I know of proves or disproves the existence of God. Which leads me to...

My conclusion - The scientific proof/evidence for "Creator" could be out there, we just haven't found it yet. I don't see the same open mindedness to this conclusion.

Religion is ridiculously stupid.

That out of the way, Life is most likely probable outside of earth, but intelligent life is different because of the way one describes it. If you say it is verbal communication, then that is limiting it, because otherworlders might communicate through other types, whether it be audible to us or not. Also, the evolution it took to create us only came about 250,000 years ago, or .00001 percent of the earth's existence, so circumstances might be different elsewhere where natural selection might favor height or something weird one could never imagine.

In other words: life probability outside of earth (to me): 99%
Intelligent life: .1%

well its really not about the title. its actually a shorty read.

The continued existence of this thread in the Pre-Allo forum is an epic moderator fail.

EDIT: I changed my mind. For some reason I wanted to defend this thread, but it is in fact getting pretty lame. Searun should have know better than to start this thread in the pre-med forum, that is what i was getting at with my previous comment.

When you look at the big picture and realize that this life is only a small portion of our eternal existence and that God is concerned with our eternal happiness, you begin to see that death is only a small part of our existence and is truly only sad for those who are left behind (and then only transiently so).

Consider the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. Babies literally drowned in their cribs. We always hear, "God has a plan for your life". That must suck for God's plan for you is to be drowned as an infant. Wouldn't it have made more sense for God to prevent that conception? The idea of a God who is all-good, all-powerful and all-knowing is incompatible with human suffering in the world. When people try to reconcile a loving God with the world we live in, they fail every time and spout out the same argument that you have presented. That we just don't understand God's will. I'd rather live (and I do live) in a world where bad things do happen for no reason at all than in a world that is controlled by a sadistic God who has the power to completely prevent suffering but instead has deigned it necessary to introduce his creation to pain and misery. I prefer to believe that we are susceptible to disease due to the shortcomings of evolution rather than through the purposeful design flaws of a creator.

Yeah, I guess that you are right. I should focus on what I know best......college football. I was just listening to Sarkasian on the Dan Patrick radio program. He was having an orgasm about the return of Jake Locker, which is understandable. I really like Locker. He seems like a really nice kid as well as a great athlete.

And I understand that Joe Montana's son has verbally committed to Washington. I don't know much about him but if he is a chip off the old block, look out. I would redshirt him during Locker's senior year, unless there are no other capable backups.

Washington used to be famous for its ferocious defenses back in the day. Sarkasian is an offensive mind, but I would put alot of recruiting emphasis on defense.

I expect Oregon to represent the Pac 10 well in the Rose Bowl.

Infidel! God will represent the Pac 10 in the Rose Bowl.

I figured that you must have been bored...this thread possibly could have worked in another part of SDN, but not here with all the neurotic pre-meds..

Yea, I am wondering if Locker is going to stick around. My guess is no, but who knows.

It will be real interesting to see if Montana is an anything like his old man, but it sound like he is excited to come to Seattle, but then again, that's what they all say.

Overall, I like where the organization is going. They're no Ducks yet, but maybe in the next couple years.

Locker announced today that he is staying and coming back for his senior year. A big deal for the Huskies.

I think that Oregon recruited Montana's kid at quarterback. He and Joe showed up for a game this year at Autzen Stadium. But I think Joe Sr. wanted a more conventional pro style offense like Washington's rather than the crazy spread offense that the Ducks run. Better preparation for the NFL. But I don't like the NFL. I am all about college football.

Washington is on the way back, no doubt. Oregon and Washington hate each other, so it makes for a better rivalry when both are good.

It's a traditional rivalry, but I find it more convenient to hate USC. But one of my good friends is a duck, so it is mandatory that I give him sh** for it, which has been hard to do the past couple years.

Well, sure, I have hated USC since the day I was born. I have also hated Los Angeles, since about the time I hit puberty. Actually, I love Seattle. The summer after my first year of med school, I spent a week on a sail boat cruising around the San Juan Islands in Puget Sound. One night we sailed into a harbor in Seattle, near Pike Place Market. We tied up our boat for a night, went to a Mariners game, had a great time, went back to our boat, barbecued some fish that we bought from the fish mongers at Pike Place, and then sailed away the next day. Nothing better. God, I miss the Northwest, in this lonely outpost on the East Coast.

Today, I finished the first semester of my third year. The end is in sight. Tomorrow, flying to a ski resort with my girlfriend, for two weeks of snowboarding in Utah. Over and out and every one have a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year. And tune into the Rose Bowl on January 1. Go Ducks!!! Life is sweet.

For you open minded S'Dners, Ever heard of the sumerian culture? Culture that dates back 4,000 BC.. drawings on stones and other artifacts might suggest that intelligent life have been visiting them for some time..

READ up on the anunnaki as well.

Interesting stuff.

You should keep an open mind, but not so open that your brain falls out.

Stones and artifacts are not quite peer reviewed journals.

What? He isn't. Unless your facepalming from the other poster's suggestion that he was.

I realize this was a year ago, but I'm gonna go ahead and point out that as of 2010, Hawking is STILL alive and ballin as ever. You're probably thinking of Carl Sagan, the other mondo famous physicist. He is definitely dead - in THIS universe 😀

A 4000 year old carving might depict something that maybe could be an alien possibly? Color me convinced! Come, friends, let's project our personal desires and beliefs into every picture we can find!

We will prove everything!

Why do people assume that for life to exist, planet has to be earth like and require water?

Life elsewhere could have hydrophilic membranes and hydrophobic cytoplasm. It may thrive at temperatures and pressures that are far cooler and higher. It may live in ocean that is hydrophobic and may drink ethane.

Only specific requirement I would argue for is that Carbon may be necessary. Carbon tetrahedral structure allows for increased complexity. However, silicon could replace Carbon as the central atom. However, for Silicon to form stable tetrahedral structure would require significantly cooler temperature.

any o-chem majors find anything in here troublesome?

I think we are more likely to find ******* life in the universe...
