Hi, Everyone:

I feel so worried after reading all the posts here. Happy for your guys of course. But I only have one call from Yale and nothing else. The silence just kills the hope 🙁 .

About myself: IMG 2000,MD and PhD, 5 years research in USA, one publication in Nature, step1 230/93, step2 229/93, waiting for cs score.

Apply to 30 programs in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania,Massachusetts.

I have done my best and don't know what else to do. Just wait...

Yuxin

hi Yuxin....keep up a positive attitude. i think your numbers are solid and you have significant research and a nature paper. very nice.

in response to what villin said, it is possible that you may be "too many years out" from med school for some states (this is in regards to the viability of your step scores-i think ther're good for only so long out of med school. BUT if you are an md/phd (ie did a combined degree rather than phd first then md) then i think you have an extended time period.). i would look into this-go on the usmle or nbme web site to figure out this issue.

also, if you are willing, at some point (ie early nov) i would consider applying to other geographical locations. I say this because MA and NY and I probably even PA are pretty popular locations. In my opinion, they run second to CA. Also, they all have some of the stronger path programs in the nation (but even still, they are desirable places to live-not for everyone of course, but in general with respect to culture, art, food, etc). Not to mention, there are soooooo many med schools in these locations which may feed their own into those programs.

this is just my opinion. i go to school in the NE so i can say from the match lists i've seen over the years (not just at my school but other NE schools), people here tend to stay around (unless they can score CA) b/c their ties end up being pretty strong via networking etc.

again, this is just my observations from over the years. perhaps it is the same in other parts of the country, i don't know.

again, i think you're stuff is great but to up your chances of interviews, consider applying more broadly.

good luck.

hey yuxin,

I think one of the reasons you are not getting too many interviews is because of the CSA score.....especially imp if u are a IMG. GL

Duke by email and eras...

Hey Kids,

4/16 interviews so far, Knoxville, Vanderbilt, MUSC and Kansas. Still waiting on 2 LORS and deans letter. REALLY looking for U Texas SW/Baylor however (family in Dallas.)

Quick Q...questions to ask on interview day? Things to look out for?

Things I would already ask...

# of PA's on Surgical Path
# of Specimens/Year
Weekends/Call/Average Hours
Sign out with Attending? or Fellows?
How often has program changed? (Directors, curriculum, etc?)
How is program funded?
How are residents evaluated?
Is there a planned curriculum? Planned objectives for each rotation?
How many hours of lecture/week?
Do residents get along/spend time with each other out of work?

Appreciate any contribution...hope this is in correct thread.

Hey Beansandchips, you got Vandy and MUSC without 2 of your LORs being in yet? That gives me hope .. 2 are in .. the last one is should be in by November .... of 2010!

Anyone else heard from Vandy without having 3 LORs in yet?

On a side note, anyone not taken step 2CK yet and freaking out like me? Stupid practice NBME tests 😱

Set up UVA interview recently and spoke with the sweetest-sounding British lady. (or at least I think the person was British) 😳

On the flipside, I cannot afford to go to UPMC, UWISC, and DUKE. These plane tickets/hotels are eating into my Xmas money. 😡 (I'm just glad gas prices are going down right before interview season.)

I'm pushing CK/CS til February, out of laziness more than anything else. For some reason I find that I cant get any work done outside the hours of 10AM-11AM.

Hey UCSF! Can we take them after January? I may have been misinformed from my ignorant friends, but I thought they needed the scores before ranking us. 🙂

And also, a past due congrats on UCSF! 👍

Thanks to sequela, Kingkong and others. Really appreciate.

Now I decide to apply to programs outside NY. It is so sad to think about leaving the city I love.

My CS score will come out in December ( I took on Sept 14th). I regret so much. I should take cs earlier than ck. Hope other people learn this.

Keep my hope up 🙂 ,

Yuxin

Thanks for the kind words. So I had a showdown with my Dean over the CK/CS BS. Basically, I got an email from her saying that we have to take it by the end of December. Well, this wasn't a requirement for the class that I originally started in (class of '06). I confronted her and she said that I could take it anytime, as long as I passed CK prior to graduation. I think it is a big issue for the students who didnt do as great on Step I to take it before being ranked. If programs have a specific requirement for me to take CK prior to me being ranked, well, their loss-- it aint gonna happen. I think the majority of places will rank you w/o it; there are probably a few individual prgrams that require it prior to ranking you. Some friends of mine matched into arguably more "competitive" specialties w/o having taken CK prior to match. I think this whole "take CK early" is a ploy by schools across the US to get students to take the exam more seriously, study hard for it, and score high, so that the schools somehow feel better about themselves and how they "prepare" you, as well as allowing them to brag about how well their students do. Disgusting if you ask me.

Congratulations to those who have been invited to interview with us! We are all very excited to meet you!

I couldn't agree with you more. Maybe I too will have showdown with my dean about the CK/CS, but my plan was taking the step 2 CK/CS early enough to take step 3 right before residency. If I don't take step 2 in december, i'll have so much free time i wouldn't know what to do besides interview.

Good luck on the interview trail. My wife is gonna kick my ass with mock interviews this weekend. :scared: If I pass her interviews, then watch out world!

Looks like Duke is hot today and they invited ME TOO!!!!

Congrats! 🙂

On a side note: Did you look at their mock interview schedule? Looks odd with only 2 or so hours interviewing and another 1 to 2 hours of sign out. Is this a group interview where they eventually pimp you at the end of the day?

Your med school does mock interviews?

Man its been a few days now and no new interviews. I've come to need my occasional "Invitation to Interview" email to pump me up for studying for CK. I'm running low on motivation 😴 I need an invite today!! Someone call Vandy and tell em to show me some 😍

Ok back to ... my workout .. then studying. 😛

hey beans, there is a thread about this already with some links, one to an excellent pdf with such questions.

I heard from vandy but all of my lors are in. sorry, i'm no help.

I freaked out over step 2 ck and those friggin nbme tests. i scored better on the real deal. i literally failed 2 of those things and passed with flying colors and not the 183 i thought i was going to have. don' sweat it. you're doiing UW right? i went through that in tutor mode and it helped quite a bit.

Congrats! 🙂

i haven't received this yet. my interview date was just confirmed this am. maybe that's why? OMG you think they pimp? see i wouldn't know anything just purely because of anxiety and it would be something easy. but then with path a lot of times i get lucky becaus ethe most obscure answer pops into my mind and it is usually right! that didn't work so well on the wards though...

Do programs rank every body they interview? and then is the interview process weighed more heavily than board scores, grades, etc?

Congrats! 🙂

Really?
I have not heard of a residency program making you look at slides to pimp...

Maybe it is so you can see their sign out.

I can't imagine a interview pimping session for pathology, it is not one gets very much of it in meidcal school...

Thanks sapience8x, NBME told me I was gonna fail. Hopefully it will get better on NBME 2&3. Yeah, I'm doing UW, about 55% overall so far at about 1000Qs. I'm mosly just using UW and reading all the expls..easier to maintain focus as opposed to reading Crush.

Hey Villin,

Is your wife available . . . for a mock interview 😉 Lol, jk. Seriously, I dont know that I could take a mock interview with my wife seriously. Everytime she tried to get tough with me I'd be mentally undressing her and have a grin like this on my face --> 😀

This sign out on interview day caused my heart to skip a beat when I first read it, but then I figured it's probably just to get a better feel for how the program runs on a day to day basis. Though I wouldn't be completely surprised if we were asked to describe something once, think about it from the resident's perspective. A bunch of applicants slowing down signout on a Friday afternoon. No way. I'm not gonna stress over this.

I've seen resident applicants at NIH get pimped at conference and at sign out, so I thought type of thing was normal, especially at top programs.

I received invites from George Washington and New Mexico this past week. I also was hoodwinked by the whole Maryland thing and am actually kind of pissed.

My ERAS is complete except for my picture, and I was wondering, is the picture optional? Will it hurt you to not bother uploading one?

Good luck to all out there.

i would send a pic...many use it to remember you during ranking (i know this for a fact)...no doubt there are "visual" people in pathology. after so many applicants, it becomes a blur and a pic can and most likely will revive their impressions of you from the interview.

you should do what you can to be remembered. and a pic is the safest and most passive way to do it.

How about showing the whale-tail at the interview - not count for being remembered? or is that too risky?

UCSD 🙂 (eras)

UCSD email was interpreted as SPAM by my school's email account.😡

I GOT 2!!

WOOHOO!!

Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh (10/10), UMDNJ (10/11).

GW turned me down, a little surprised, personally.

Now I understand the craziness; you get a couple and wonder why they aren't all coming at once.

Until Nov 1st, it's still early; I think programs may send out interviews in "tiers", so to all who are still waiting, hang in there!

villin- that sucks. how did you end up getting that email marked as spam? that has been my fear all along. But i am waiting on schools that send invites via snail mail.

has anyone heard from USF?

Vaderize...go out and celebrate tonight! 🙂

Sapience: I'm contacting my email support VERY soon!

ermonty: my wife is unavailable for mock interviews, etc, except for me.😛

to all: anyone hear from U Chicago yet? (i remember someone posting Chicago but they never confirmed what date they sent invites out...hmmm)

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!! LET'S SHOW THE PD'S WE ARE SERIOUS ABOUT PATH! 🙂

Congrats to all on the recent invites!

My third LOR came through today, so next week is gonna be HUGE. Programs will be reviewing my now "complete" application (no MSPE), AND I take step 2 CK on friday!

Man I'm gonna crumble under this anticipatory stress :scared:

Maybe I should go check a good movie this weekend to unwind, anyone seen the Departed? Any other suggestions?

What about that movie with diCaprio, Damen, and Nicholson? I heard it was good. (I'm stupid! Just realized we're talking about the same movie) 😳

And Best of Luck on your CK! I hope you get many  moments on the exam. :luck:

Recently heard from Medical College of Wisconsin and Mayo

Thanks to all😀

Now it will be really hard waiting on the rest of the programs (especially until Nov 1st with those old MSPE's; mine are from a few years ago, oh well😉 ).

I would like to see that new movie with Robin Williams, Man of the Year
