Interview Invites for 2010 Match

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No bad choices between the two of them.

Duke used to be a division but they are now a department to second Palintology. I went to the Duke interview and not the UTSW (I did not apply there) but I thought Duke was quite a strong program. If you look at their alumni from the department, they have quite a lineup of graduates that have gone on to do great things in the field and become chairmen elsewhere.

Duke makes a great effort to get to know you and their dinner was very fun as the faculty showed up too and were laid back. They knew our applications well and have a wide variety of interests...Strong program in a great location.

Let me add another two cents...I had a similar decision last year where I had conflict between two programs, one with a great reputation and the other that was very strong as well. I chose the one with a greater reputation (turned out for scheduling purposes and logistics of travel) and I was diasappointed. So don't make a choice purely on reputation...I'm not going to name programs here except to say that I was in a similar boat last year.

do most programs send out second rounds of invites?

my experience last year was that interviews came out on multiple days - my home program did this (not sure why though), and some programs only offer single dates to fill them one at a time. there seemed to be "rounds" of invites and also invites that trickled as people changed plans. this happened as late as January for me.

also some programs didn't give any invitation / rejection at all. this totally ticked me off, given the fact that we pay to apply to them, and agonize waiting to hear something.

I think some programs say on their homepages that if you don't hear from them, that means you shouldn't expect a formal rejection.

But I believe your point is valid that it would be nice to hear something either way since so much effort is put into the process.

I hope this doesn't come off as depressing

But with 31 Straight Rejections, and not a single invite, I can only expect the same from the other 83 programs I have yet to hear from since a majority of those 83 have sent out invites

I suppose score >230, a year of an unpaid clinical research fellowship, and 2 outstanding letters from Derm Gods doesn't really cut the mustard anymore

Presumably I should wait another week before throwing in the towel, but based on the trend, my ropes are running low!

Sorry to be Debbie Downer (wah wah waaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh), but I just don't get it!

😕

Unfortunately, I'll have to reveal the 800-pound gorilla in the room.

Your chances of matching in a U.S. Derm Residency were low from the start...because you are applying as a FMG med school graduate. Not zero, but low. You have to understand that there are many US med school superstars applying to Derm with similar or better numbers than you.

There are just over 300 open USA allopathic (M.D.) derm residency slots per year and many applicants applying for them. Derm is always either #1 or #2 most competitive specialty. There's already a low acceptance rate for Derm. Many of the accepted candidates "walk on water". Derm is very elitist and generally will chose USA grads over FMG's (even if they are US citizens).

But to give you some hope...In the past, I know that Univ of Chicago, Boston University, Duke, and UT Southwestern have taken foreign grads. But most of the FMG's graduated from reputable European or Asian medical schools and did a multi-year Derm research fellowship with well-known U.S. Derm faculty before matching. You too can continue to increase your chances by doing research with a USA Derm residency program, publishing, and networking with well-known Derm faculty who must write you outstanding letters of recommendation. But go in knowing that there is a strong preference toward USA grads and you coming from a foreign med school will be a "black-eye" on your Derm application. You may have to apply multiple times to get into a USA Derm program...but even then, there are no guarantees that you'll ever get accepted...so be prepared to have a backup specialty. I know the truth hurts...but it's the truth.

If you do not get into Derm residency this year, then I recommend that you complete your internship year in the USA, then apply for a 1-2 year Derm research fellowship to strengthen your application. Sometimes a Derm residency spot opens up unexpectedly (such as Kaiser LA, Tufts, and UT Austin recently) and want to fill the spot immediately...if you already have an intern year under your belt, then you are at an advantage (over med students) of getting the spot...because all derm res programs require a completed clinical intern year to get in.

Hi guys--in need of some advice. Will probably need to cancel Rush or Minnesota due to scheduling conflicts. Is anyone familiar with either of these programs and have any thoughts? Thanks a bunch.

where did soreeyeass go? he used to post so often.

Minnesota is a much bigger program, seems like 4-5 residents a year. Rush typically takes 2 residents a year and I suspect their candidates are internal.

has anyone not heard from wake forest yet? just trying to figure out if they are still giving out invites or if my rejection got lost in the mail!

I'll agree with this, I've been looking at this board for the last few weeks/months and it seems that I've gotten at least 3 second-round type interview invites from places who had already offered up interviews.

I don't have a "ton" of interviews yet either, but there are a few programs who have formally waitlisted me, and there are a few who have sent out both invites and rejections (neither to me) so I'm hopeful. They could be slow playing me, or could have completely forgotten me, but I am not certain either way.

What's the current going theory on the magic number for derm? I'm hoping for at least 2 more.

my year they sent out in batches. i didn't receive an invite to interview until january. other people on the trail had heard in december.

On my invite, it says they are reviewing applications as they become complete and then sending out invites. It doesn't sound like they batch the invites as much as other programs do.

I was wondering if anyone who is applying after having completed a prior residency has gotten any interviews? I am in the same boat and have been discouraged lately, but I know how competitive derm apps are and that I only have a 30% chance of matching. When I researched this it seemed like a lot considered second residents (about 60 programs) and I was wondering where people who have already done some training have gotten interviews thus far? I am sure that everyone is stressed out, and good luck to everyone with this process!

Just to add in my scenario...I am board certified in anther specialty and am applying to derm as a second residency and so far I have received no invites and 4 rejections. I am waiting to hear from the remaining 12 schools (including my alma mater).

I too have over 10 publications in peer reviewed journals, posters, presentations and did a derm research/clinical fellowship.

Although some residents have matched in the past, I think we have quite a challenge.

Izzy,

Sorry that this interview season has be so frustrating so far. I really hope that you hear positively from some institution so that you get a chance to interview and match this year. I will say that I would not post up so many personal facts about yourself in this forum as you will no longer be anonymous to any faculty that peruse this site and they will read into your words to get a sense of your bitterness. I would say that porokeratosis actually gave you solid advice and is being honest. He/she didn't just put you down but offered solutions that are not that obvious.

All of his/her suggestions have NOT been fulfilled "except for one" as you claim. I don't mean to kick you when you are feeling down but I think it is best said before rank lists are submitted and while you are still interviewing because you can set yourself up better at this point with your choices.

For one, the intern year suggestions was a good one and you already agreed.

The next is that you would do better if you went to a clinical fellowship where they tend to take their fellows...you have not fulfilled this possibility with a clinical fellowship as a med student. Clinical fellowships after medical school as very very different from those as a medical student. Your ability to really work closely with a faculty member in clinical research will change dramatically if you have an MD and license. I really do hope you match this year but you need to look at programs where the fellows match back in and I would add Colorado and UC Irvine to that list. You can see where the fellows tend to come from (certain prelims vs certain regions of the country) and that might make a difference when you think about choosing a prelim this year.

Your stats are great but the harsh reality is that many of the people that i know that are getting interviews have 240+, have more publications (not just submitted publications), have taken a year off for research, are AOA (but many are not), and have a home school with a derm department that can go to bat for them. Regardless, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you since you clearly have worked hard.

As a general comment, Izzy is an example of why we shouldn't shoot down people that are interested in derm before medical school. It makes a difference to know early. I know Izzy didn't find out until after starting but if you know early, you already increase your chance of matching. I knew before medical school and that made a huge difference in the ease of matching. And yes, you can have strong inclinations early if you have the right experiences along the way.

nice post dermRus. don't have much to add. you probably have the best chance of matching at a program that knows you, since as you have experienced, random programs are less likely to consider your application.

also, many of the foreign grads that match into derm have already done a derm residency in their home country and are quite accomplished in the field. there are very few american fmgs (if any? maybe there is one from the caribbean?) that have matched derm in recent years. you may already know this, and i'm not saying it to bring you down, just to make you aware if you are not already.

I did not disagree with anything Porokeratosis (whose posts I have read since I went down this rabbit hole) has stated, my only point was that because of him and posts I have read for the last 4 years I had made the necessary adjustments, however in my opinion they have been to no avail. Again I agree with the fact that regardless of what I have done you both are correct.

I didnt take either of the posts as put-downs, they have always been and continue to provide me with the solid advice that has guided my decisions,

I appreciate the time you both have taken to address my concerns!

It is frustrating, and the hurdles I have to overcome are innumerable, I think the comments on fellowships are excellent, and as my plan B already I am glad to know there are fellowships that funnel students directly into their programs. All I can do now is continue to work hard I suppose,

Thank you all for the well wishing and hope,

Izzy

Question - how many interviews does one need to be comfortable to match into derm? I have heard anywhere from 6 to 10 ...

Thoughts??

they make it a point to say that because they don't just select on the basis of quantitative test scores and scholastic achievement, they use the app as a tool to evaluate the whole person...

hmmm...so why would they advertise AOA on the resident website?

One last plea. I am scheduled for January 14th at Duke and would like to switch to December 16th. Willing to pay for flight cancellation fees or offer a free Southwest flight (I have a coupon voucher that allows a flight to be booked by December 31st -- but actual flights can be at anytime). I would really appreciate it; I hate to have to give up one of my few interviews! Please pm me if you are interested.

Question - how many interviews does one need to be comfortable to match into derm? I have heard anywhere from 6 to 10 ...

Thoughts??

"Comfortable" is very subjective as you can see by the posts on this forum. Some are happy with 1 interview and others can't sleep at night because they only have 8. I have posted the link below for the most objective data that we have right now.

Not sure, actually. I need to look at my note. 12-ish offers and 3 rejections. I'll be able to make it for sure to 7. Still iffy on 2. Will need to decline 3.

You gave them my name, right
Thanks to everyone who cancels interviews. I hope some of us who are struggling right now will get them!

I will send you a handwritten thank you card if I miraculously get an interview there. 😀 Or I can send it after match day if you want to remain completely anonymous for now.

But seriously, thank you... even that small glimmer of hope helps brighten my day. Hope one of us on here get it... Speak up if you get an interview at UCSD over the next week or so. (then we'll know it's all because of chef 🙂 )

Last year I think it was figured to be 9 to 10. Then again, some matched with much less. Think we even had someone match with only 1 interview. It is all a blur now. You can do it! Pray hard and remain chill on the interview trail. Be yourselves, they want to see who they will be working with over the 3 years after you finish that intern year. 🙂

Comfortable? Ask the person who had 18 interviews (Cheebs or scumbagderm, can't remember)...I'll bet that person wasn't comfortable.

I had 12 and was still a nervous wreck until after I received my Match email. Pretty much nervous from the day I decided on derm (1st year) until Black Monday...forgot what "normal" felt like! 👎
