I am not sure I buy this BS of post turkey day love. I have ONE interview, thanks to my home program and more rejections than I know what to do with at this time. I wish I would have saved my money.

My friend received a UCLA interview offer a week or two ago. Not sure if they are sending another round out.

I am curious for the large programs that interview on one day, like Miami, how many people can they actually interview in ONE day.

sorry MrEd 🙁. i know i helped circulate the post-turkey day interview rumor and for real i got a ton of interviews post-turkey day last time, but i'm not doing too well this time around. not sure what is going on -- is it me? my app? my letters? or maybe the competition is just really tough this time around. unc's letter said 519 applicants and i don't remember that many before...

I am lurker of the forum but will give a little perspective about this year without revealing to much about myself. My stats are what I believe to be decent, all were on my app when I submitted

Mid tier school
3rd year grades All Honors
1st and 2nd year grades Few HP Few Honors
Missed AOA "this is the most important part of your application I am realizing"
5 Pubs, 6 posters
Derm Letter from a huge name in the field
Lots of interesting volunteer and work experience during and before medical school

I have received 6 interviews including 1 from home and 1 from an away rotation

There is someone else applying from my school with AOA with >10 invites. The only thing different is our yr 1/2 grades that got them AOA and they are racking em up and I'm twiddling my thumbs. I don't mind, I might match, if not who knows my future, but I just wanted to say to everyone, I think the competition is fierce this year. AOA for non PhD is by far the most important component of your app unless you come from the Ivy league, at least that is my opinion.

Your stats are amazing. 6 is a decent number. Hopefully you'll get more, since nothing is safe in derm...

How many programs did you apply to? I think that would be helpful for those applying in future years. There's a big difference between getting 6 interviews if you only applied to 20 programs vs applying to all of them.

I'm wondering about the school thing as well. I attend a "top tier" school. This might be the thing that hopefully saves my application a little (I'm applying next year) since I missed AOA. Last match my school had 100% match into Derm. My friend at a mid tier private school said his class matched about 3 out of 10 into Derm and several of those people had great stats. My stats...pretty middle of the road, derm-wise.

agreed.. i dont think i'll be getting any more interviews. unless there are cancellations. the very few who have not sent out invites are pipe dream programs anyway..

Don't lose hope guys!! Some people must need to cancel their double invites sooner or later. My guess is that they'll cancel later with hopes that some date swapping will work!

Personally, I have ~5 interviews, and just had to cancel one. Yes, it hurts. Yes, it bloody bloody hurts. But I definitely couldn't make it and there's someone else out that can use the spot.

Hey guys,

Sorry to ask again for info on a program, but these conflicting interviews are really killing me. I want to cancel whichever I can't attend to let others get the invites, but it's really hard to make decisions without any first-hand experience at these programs.

Anyway, does anyone who has rotated at Jefferson have any thoughts on the strengths or weaknesses of the program? Again, if you'd like your thoughts to remain off the public forum, a PM works as well.

I doubled my interview offers after thanksgiving, now have a whopping 7 offers and had to cancel one because it conflicted, which really does suck. But, I do believe in the after turkey day interviews, and I'm still counting on one where I rotated and hopefully another long shot where I also did an externship.....if I get 8 I think i can feel secure. The daily rejections piling in one after another is a killer on the self esteem tho. Make it stop!!

I doubled my interview offers after thanksgiving, now have a whopping 7 offers and had to cancel one because it conflicted, which really does suck. But, I do believe in the after turkey day interviews, and I'm still counting on one where I rotated and hopefully another long shot where I also did an externship.....if I get 8 I think i can feel secure. The daily rejections piling in one after another is a killer on the self esteem tho. Make it stop!!

it's more the school than AOA. i'd trade AOA for a top tier name in a heartbeat at this point.

At first, when the interviews weren't pouring in, I thought that my decision to only apply to about half of the programs was a horrible mistake. But now I realize it's subtle brilliance; I get half the rejections! I mean, sure, I have less than a handful of invites and the chances are slim that I'll match... but think of how many rejections I've avoided! Next year I'm thinking that I'll probably only apply to 1 or 2 programs -- it will ultimately be the same result and I will only get 2 rejections! Brilliant!

I'll second this. I'm not AOA, and I'm at 9 interviews not including my own school, which will offer me an interview. I feel VERY fortunate.

I think it has less to do with thinking that people trained at a certain school will be better residents, and more from being able to advertise that they got their resident from so and so IVy league or super good school."

The fares tend to increase 7 days before and 14 day before (not a hard-and-fast rule). So depending on how uncertain you are about keeping the interview, I'd base my flight-making decisions on those dates. I'm making them at least 8 days before and sometimes 15 days before if I'm pretty I sure I want to keep them.

I had some derm pubs, derm research, letters, decent board score.

Yes, AOA is certainly important, but don't underestimate how much school status can hurt you. I would even trade my AOA status for a mid-tier school.

NYU and Cornell rejections here too. Trying to tell myself that I don't care since I really didn't want to move to NYC, but I think that's just a defense mechanism. Haha.

Lots of rejections lately. I have to cancel 3 interviews🙁. Hopefully that will bring some holiday spirit to someone. I guess programs schedule interviews on the same dates to see who is really interested?👎

Oh that sucks. 🙁 Where are you cancelling? Look at the bright side-at least you have enough interviews to be able to cancel some!
