Hi ppl. This is for ppl who interviewed at UCLA. We might be future classmates so lets put the UCLA updates here. My final decision box is still empty and i interviewed very late jan! 🙂

My interview was on Dec 10, and my final decision box is empty too. I would forsake all others for UCLA. 🙂
I'll update if I hear any news. Good luck.

interviewed mid jan. hopefully i'll see you in the next class! 😉

where r u guys and gals from??

interviewed 1/24 received acceptance today 2/24

Gluck to those still waitin

interviewed mid november, received acceptance 2/5. I'm 95% sure I'll be going to ucla. 🙂

i interviewed 1/31 and no final decision yet...damn i'm dying to get into the school that rejected me for undergrad!!!
Good luck everyone
dirtybob

Interviewed 2/10 and waiting patiently, but I am not so sure I want to go there anymore.

I have some concerns about the curriculum changing and being part of the "test run class" ... Any thoughts??

i know this may be pretty random, but how long after the interview invite was everyone's interviews? I'm hoping to get in there as soon as possible for obvious reasons, but i haven't recieved anything in the mail yet, so i have no idea when my date is or if i'm supposed to call the admissions office to set up a date. I'm still in shock that i even recieved a interview invite.

I was offered an interview on 1/14, received an instruction sheet via snail mail on 1/21, returned it FedEx the next day and waited, and waited , and waited....finally, I called on 2/7 and they never recieved it in the admissions office. I know it was signed for in the mail room, but it never made it out.

When you send back the info sheet, they update the status page to say that they received it-now I know!-then when they schedule you a date, they post it on the site as well.

I did get an interview almost immediately, 2/10, but a couple of weeks at this point can make a huge difference with an acceptance vs. a waitlist, so if it were me I would call. Hind site is 20/20 🙂

interviewed on 12-4-02... still waiting 🙁

Trix-

thanks for the info. did they let you schedule the interview over the phone? if so, thats totally what I'll do. I'll just wait to call after i get the info sheet.

trix, i know when i was there i was told to definitely call them in april/may to ask what the new curriculum would entail. they should have some details hashed out by then (is what they said). moskeeto, definitely call.. i had an interview request letter from another school NEVER reach me via snail mail and i had to call and be somewhat persistent about scheduling out of their ordinary scheduling procedure. good luck to us all!

They did let me schedule over the phone. I spoke to Rebecca and she was very helpful. Carrol Cohen is the interview coordinator, but she was out the day I called.

I don't know if they only let me schedule via phone because I had problems, but I think I read in another post someone else did it via phone as well.

Regardless, definitely don't wait as long as I did. I would give them 3 biz days to recieve the form and then call whether you receive it or not.

Good luck on your interview!

hey everyone, i am sure some of us will be together next fall! i am not sure about myself tho, being an international student. anyways:

1. new curriculum: i am loving how it sounds! it was designed by taking the goods and minusing the negatives, less class time. sounds good to me!

TRIX U BETTER CHOOSE UCLA 🙂

2. they tell me that they review the files all the time, random is true. umm and phone calls do some positive work trust me! my transcript box was only ticked after i called!

3.the ghettoness of the undergrad campus (since its public) is just sexy! 😀

I completely agree that all the new curriculum changes are for the better, I am only worried about being the guinea pig class, not the actual changes.

There are several other schools who made similar changes within the last few years and there were definitely some less than desirable moments. UCLA has always been my first choice, but now I am wondering.... 😕

Though, I think I should worry about getting accepted first before I start agonizing over a curriculum huh?

yea trix, after we get accepted we can worry about who gets to become class president~

cali is such a far away place from me right now 🙂

hey guys,

here's a link of the new curriculum announcement. Personally, I'm pretty excited about it and makes me want to go even more cuz I can't stay awake for any of my lectures. Seems like there'll be 2 hrs of lecture max per day...which sounds good for me.

I just called ucla office, and they said that they have sent the feb acceptance batch 2/20. The next batch will be in march, so i'll wait and see next month. Anyone feel that your interviewer completely forgot about you since its been so long. Gosh, i hope that never happens, but hang in there everybody, and hopfully we can all be classmates next year

GO BEARS!!!

MANNNNNNNNNNN that sux. wait till march huh! oh well, i hope its random cuz i wanted my file to be reviewed this month!

I interviewed 1/23 and got my acceptance 2/24. Insiders tell me that starting in late march, the batches they send out will be more frequent.

Good luck everyone!

your insiders, i hope are trustworthy +pissed+

i interviewed 11/4 and still no word. i have a suspicion i'm going to be rejected or waitlisted. if i was accepted, i think i would have been notified by now.. it's been over 3 months!

I just talked to a nice lady at the admissions (which was a first for me. they are always so cold!) and she told me that admissions batches go out every month. so the next one will be mid or end of march. and i think someone's source said that it's going to be more frequent??.. but it's just that they are going to start sending out rejections and waitlists in march. (she told me none of the rej/waitlists have been sent out yet.) So a whole load of people will be getting letters next month. some good, some bad..

ah.. I don't know if i can deal with a waitlist. it's already been such a long wait.

good luck to you all! =)

I interviewed way back in mid-November and have heard NOTHING. I guess me being a King's fan is actually hurting my chances.

I hope I hear something from them soon, just to make me feel adequate.

my god, you didn't actually mention that you're a kings fan during the interview did you? 😱

I was thinking of wearing a kings shirt under my suit during my interview and somehow relating the current problems in the healthcare field to the fact that understanding what shaq is saying during a radio shack/burger king/nestle crunch comercial is about as difficult as getting an HMO to pay for a boob job.

Ha ha...HMO and boob jobs. Funny. You could totally use that.

Nah, but I think it would have been pretty silly if I did. My interviewer didn't appear to be highly involved with NBA basketball. But looks can be deceiving. She could have been swearing under her breath the whole time about people from Northern CA who love the Kings.

I'm on the same boat as you guys. Interviewed fairly early(Dec) but no letters since. Its sucks because everybody keeps saying that you should apply early and it helps you cause. All that its done for me is to keep me hanging in midair for longer. I wish that these so called "rolling" schools would roll people right away. Either reject or accept so we can get on with our lives. Three to four months of wait time so far from UCLA and two other schools.
Does anyone know if they actually accept anybody after this long or are they just delaying the rejection letters?

i have no idea... as for myself i also interviewed early (dec) and it is killing me...

i believe i posted this somewhere in the UC threads, but here it is again.
UCLA will continue sending acceptance batches every month (just sent one batch 2/20 ish.. so next one will be around 3/20?)
and they have not sent out any post-interview rejections so far.. from what she told me. but they will send out rejections and waitlists starting sometime in march.
so lots of letter in march.

Good luck everyone!

does anyone know when school starts and when the white coat ceremony is? thanks and good luck to all those waiting!

i feel your pain guys, i interviewed mid-december and also have heard nothing. the wait is agonizing, i want to get on with my life so i can start planning!

hey guys, anybody know about the new curriculum, can anyone elaborate the details, because my tour guide didn't mention much about it other than the fact that next year is the first year for the new curriculum

hey dirtybob,

one of the 4th years on the adcom called me a few days ago asking if I had any questions about ucla. of course I took the opportunity to ask him about the new curriculum...here's what he said:

There will be 24 hours of "contact time" per week, meaning there will be 24 hours that's been scheduled, either in lecture, seminars, small groups, or labs. There will be 2 hrs of lecture per day, 10 hrs total for the week. The rest of the time will come mainly from seminars and small groups. Small groups will have about 8 people, and seminars will have more.

The new curriculum is now organ-based, similar to what ucsf and usc has. There will be three 8 week blocks (all done during 1st year) and then one 14 week block on the nervous system (7 weeks done 1st year and 7 weeks done during 2nd year). I'm sure most people know what the organ-based curriculum is like...but in case some who don't...it's basically you spend an entire block on a particular system (eg. cardio) and learn everything related to the heart (anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, etc.). The theory is that its easier to learn this way instead of just looking at the anatmoy of the heart your first semester, and then learning the pharmacology related to it during your second year.

There will also be a class called "doctoring" which emphasis on clinical stuff, ethics, etc.

Classes are pass/fail, with a possibility of students receiving a letter of distinction. But getting that distinction is very subjective and not based on test scores. It's based on overall impression of the student by the faculty.

Random info I found out: Recruitment weekend is 4/12/2003...everyone gets 30% of their financial need in grants...new hospital will open anytime between 2005 and 2007 (no one is sure yet).

I think that's all he told me...I'll add more if I find out more about the curriculum.

good luck!

For those of you who haven't heard back yet, how did you think your interview went? Did he/she give you any feedback regarding your chances of being accepted? I felt that my interviewer was completely unimpressed with me and I highly doubt that I'll hear any good news from them at this point. 🙁
I wish I would have had a student interview that my have helped to balance out my awful faculty interview. Oh well..

cipher i pm'd you.

my interview went ok, the interviewer didn't review my application ahead of time, so he ended up staring at my application and asking me questions about my app. Most of the time i was talking while he was flipping through my app...sometimes i wonder if he was even listening. Anyone else get that type of interview?

Also, anyone else have anymore insight on the new curriculum? Thanks dpy for your help

My interviewer was extremely prepared and very interested in speaking with me. She had quite a few specific questions about my application, and I could tell she read every word of my primary, my secondary, and my LOR's. In the end, my interview was a little over 1 1/2 hours, and I think if she had had more time, I might still be in her offfice.

So, I felt pretty good about it in the sense that she really got to know me. Didn't have a student interview.

I asked her about the new curric. because I found out abaout the change the day before and she gave me the same basics that dpy posted. I told her it was a concern of mine to be part of the first class with a new currric., and she reassured me several times that all of the kinks were worked out because they analyzed several other schools that had made similar switches, the problems they had, and made adjustments.

I am still not completely reassured because I don't think any school changes curriculum's and BELIEVES there are going to be problems. It is just part of change. More details regarding the new curric. are apparently going to be posted on their website in April.

bob, lord have mercy, I wasn't the only one who felt like that! Yeah, it didn't appear as though my interviewer spent anytime looking @ my file beforehand. Just defeats the purpose of an open file interview. Oh well.

Anyhow, if anyone also had Dr. Del Portillo (female), could you please let me know how you felt @ her style of interviewing. Feel free to PM me if you don't feel comfortable discussing it in open forum. Thanks.

I completely agree. I also expressed concern about being part of the "guinea pig" year for the new curriculum and my interviewer agreed that there are likely going to be kinks that need to be worked. However, it seems as though the school has spent a great deal of time and energy over the past 6 years devising and revising the curriculum to the point that they finally feel comfortable implementing it.

some of the ms 3 and 4's i talked to at lunch also professed dissatisfaction with their inability to rotate thru everything in time to properly choose a residency before match. though they said the school continually asks for their input on curriculum changes and they had told them these problems. might be something else to ask about (an update to the ms3 and 4 years in terms of curriculum). overall, though, they were pretty happy. good luck to all.

lets have some interviewer names and their styles with interviews in order to rest assured that we weren't singled out. 😛

My interview was very brief, lasting a little more than 30minutes. More than half of it was spent with her answering my questions. She was very nice and helpful and I felt that I anwered everything in good order. But I don't know why it was so brief and I don't understand how one interviewer in such a short time would be able to evaluate me thoroughly. I think that they may have had their minds set about me before I went which would be disappointing considering I had to go there from out of state, in the midst of my finals.

I spoke to a couple of UCLA MS4s who had misgivings about the new curriculum because of the lack of repitition. As far a I can tell, the new curriculum sounds good to me. As far as being guinea pigs, we should think of ourselves as pioneers.

Did anyone interview on 2/26? and would anyone go to USC over UCLA?

dr. honrubia anyone?

No way, similar education for 3x the cost.

So here's another question: What if you had full scholarship to USC? Would anyone choose USC over UCLA in that scenario?

it would be tempting but...ucla students get to do clinicals and problem a lot of the problem based appoaches at the UCLA medical center, one of the top 5 hospitals in the nation
