no need to sign anything for USPS. I just have to say that we have gone through a lot and regardless of what happens, we'll be better off knowing our fate sooner rather than later.
 
Acceptances are supposed to come via UPS, not USPS, which is why we were discussing the signing thing. Oh, the slowest UPS service for a letter is 2nd-Day Air. I bet you don't have to sign.

it's gotta be a mixed batch.. how can they waitlist ALL of us? I say if we assume we are a random sampling of the people waiting still, we should expect a 1/6 chance of acceptance. 500-600 interviewees.. ~100 acceptances??

i can't study for my midterm now.. too nervous!!

Hang in there. There are lots of people in our class that got in off the waitlist. You might want to send in a letter of continued interest, a LOI, or even update your file if anything significant has happened since you sent in your amcas.

Hi,

I'm new to SDN but I got waitlisted at UCLA back in March -- can someone explain to me briefly what this whole 2 tier wait list thing is all about? My letter just says "unranked waitlist" ... (sorry if you've all mentioned it, i just can't thumb through the thousands of posts before this)
 
the unranked means you have a shot at getting in, about 40% get in, the hold is the second teir and it means you've all but been rejected.

what's up guys,

I interviewed on 4/14, letter sent 5/16...

I walked over to the admissions office about 10 min ago and asked someone what type of letter I will be receiving. She told me that I'll be getting a waitlist letter.

I asked her how the waitlist works and she told me that I just have to wait.

I asked her about the different types of waitlists and which one I'm on and she said, "you're on the only one that counts."

I suppose this is good news but I don't really know for sure.

wow, so courageous. i could just as easily walk down there myself but i'm too chicken. however, if my letter doesn't come in the mail today, i will do as you did. Congrats for getting on the 'waitlist that counts' at least. =) Maybe I should go downstairs early and grab my letter as the mailman is still sorting..

NO LETTER IN MY MAIL! Is this good or bad? Does this mean it will come tomorrow, or come later with the UPS guy? Should I waste fifteen minutes to walk to the office or sit tight at home, burning with anxiety?? aaaaahhhhh!! Yes, I have nothing better to do right now than to pretend to study for my midterm tomorrow and check SDN every 5 minutes.

does this whole hold list piss anyone else off?? if there is only one waiting list "that counts," why the hell have the other one at all? why not just reject those lowly people who apparently don't matter and put them out of their misery?

i'm really not usually this bitter but when i got my hold letter i was really offended and the more that i read about it here the more it pisses me off. i had a horrible interview so i obviously knew an acceptance was out of the question, i was praying for a waitlist, and realistically expecting a rejection. but the hold thing caught me completely off gaurd. to me the hold list says:

"you are not even good enough to be our back up but we are not going to flat out reject you, but rather we're going to string you along because maybe, just maybe, we might need you later to fill a spot and pay us a tuition check, so essentially we are covering our own ass at your expense. and in the end after all the heartache if we do accept you you'll still come crawling because we are just that great. have a nice day."

i agree cali03, it sux. im also praying for a waitlist and after what twentyseven said, i'm kinda "holding" my breath. we're all in this together guys.
 
patience people, the letters will come. 🙂 chibihamsta, i'll bet the letter will still be another day or two. the way their mail system works it takes a day or two to even get out of UCLA. the 2 letters i sent from there, the campus mail took almost a week longer to get up here than the standard mail that took like 2 business days. I don't know, just try not to drive yourself too crazy, but yeah if i lived as close as you do, they would have talked to me in the admission office today. 😀 at least we got a bit of good news that it seems like the unranked waitlist is still available.
 
cali i think you're right and it is about covering their asses. My guess would be that if for some odd circumstances they have to go through their entire waitlist (as close to impossible as one can get), they won't have to eat crow and call up someone they rejected like what happened last year at that florida med school. so thats why there's the hold category. don't feel too bad, i'll probably be giving you company once I get my letter next week.
 
last year only 25% were accepted from the alternate list.

historically some HAVE been taken off the hold, but its not really common and it didnt happen last year.

Oh, during my interview they told us that up to 40% were taken.

This is a shameless bump. I've heard nothing really, but I'm on the unranked waitlist. I hope I don't have to wait until right before the 1st day of classes to hear something. Good luck to all who are waiting on a decision.
 
I've got great news. I walked over to the adm. office about fifteen minutes ago since I didn't get any mail yesterday. There was one lady in the office. I said to her, "I saw online that a decision had been mailed, and i wanted to check on the status of my letter." She asked me for my SSN. She put a dark screen over her monitor so I couldn't see the computer screen from where I was standing. She asked me to verify my home address. I took a watermelon jolly rancher from the bowl on the counter. I slowly unwrapped it in my hand, then stopped. She turned around and said, "Your letter was a rejection. I'm sorry." She smiled nicely. I smiled back, said Thank you, and left. I put the jolly rancher in my mouth as I walked out of the CHS building. I breathed a sigh of relief. No more waiting. Rejections are great.

Good luck to y'all still waiting. Whoa, just had de ja vu. =)

I am considering reapplying next year; how did they view you as a reapplicant? Did you interview at UCLA the first time too? In any case, good luck!
 
Thanks guys, I'm alright. I've still got Davis and UCLA/Drew that haven't gotten back to me. We could still potentially become classmates this fall! hehe... if all else fails I'm going to Drexel! 😎

I sincerely hope that those still waiting on an acceptance get in somewhere (UCLA) soon!

Hey mfleur,

To respond to your questions, No I didn't receive an interview last year from UCLA, which was surprising to my interviewer at UCLA this year. She actually asked me, why didn't we interview you? mmmmmmmm, I believe that if you do decide to reapply that you improve in all of your WEAK AREAS! My weakness was my MCAT (especifically my verbal!) and my science GPA. I improved just a little bit on my MCAT but dramatically improved my SCIENCE GPA thanks to my post bac (3.85 :clap: ). So besides that I also have the research experience I didn't have last year so I'm sure that helped as well. My advice is to go talk to an admissions counselor at the UC Med schools and ask them in what areas you should improve on. Most likely it will be your numbers, which I have an issue with! Numbers don't mean everything, but unfortunately most schools want you to improve those areas first before applying. Good luck to you and if you or anybody else have questions PM me. late

hey chibi, thats a bummer, but way to handle it with a little class. I keep thinking I'll be happy to finally get that rejection, but I wonder if I'll probably be a bit bummed. i guess I'l find out in a couple days.

Xenon, that sucks and I'm sorry to hear about the news. Did you receive a letter in the mail today? Did you call the office? I think it's just a matter of time now before I receive my rejection letter as well.

i am still waiting to hear from one school, but i am ready to send in the 2004 AMCAS and give it another go.

i wish the rest of you guys who are waiting the best of luck!
 
god dammit I'm really pissed I missed seeing Hawking now because of UCLA when they were just going to lump us all together and send out a bunch of rejections. thats not classy. o well guys it was a fun ride. hopefully everyone has better luck with other schools this year or better luck next year. sorry about the disappointment Xenon. best luck for next year.
 
Umm, yeah. So this isn't looking so good for the 5/16 people. Of this group 3 have found out what they got and all 3 have been rejections. I guess there might be some waitlists in that group, but so far it looks like the 5/16 group is a rejection group. 🙁

Oh well, the quicker I can accept it, the quicker I can move on and start getting my f'ing AMCAS together. 😡

I just wish they could tell me over the phone and get it over with. Why does UCLA insist on prolonging the agony?

i am a long time reader of this thread. My status page also said final letter sent on 5/16. So today I called UCLA and found out that I am on Hold. So for those who are still in the agony of waiting, you can call and try to find out. good luck.
 
thanks for the support. anyways im gona send in AMCAS 2004, im gonna apply to less competitive schools than those that interviewed me (dartmouth and ucla) and im gonna work with whoever is interested.

Good luck guys...at least you know now that you need to send that damn AMCAS in. I am sitting on waitlists, and won't know my fate 'til august. Thus, I have decided that if I don't get in, I will not be reapplying this year, but will just have to wait till the next cycle. Instead I am going to take my promotion at work and buy a car...hey, the simple pleasures. I have been driving my old crap car for too long, holding off on the new one because of medical school. But if things don't work out, I am going to treat myself!

On a side note, is skeptic the only one who has been accepted off the unranked waitlist...I would love to believe that the list is actually moving and he wasn't just a fluke. But it seems weird that he is the only one who has heard.

Anyone called to see if the class if full??
 
When the people who say they've been rejected, does that mean that you're in the "hold" category, or have there been straight up rejections post-interview? The reason I ask is because I am on the hold category, and if the office told you that you were rejected, but you got a letter saying you were on the hold category, then I'd know that I am rejected as well, instead of having a miniscule chance of getting in.
