Interviews 2005 Match!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Long time looker, first time poster. Sounds like an intriguing personal. 😉

Geddy - I got the same letter from Baylor (Houston) yesterday. Glad to hear I'm not in the boat all alone. And hrtgeek, I 've gotta question for you. Did you get an invite to UTSW (in Dallas) and/or UT Houston? Not being picky, I just want to know who you've heard from.

Anyway thanks for the info and the advice to all. Hopefully, I too will impart some wisdom or contribute to the many different topics discussed here.

And to give my location away.....Go Astros. Nothing like pizza, beer and (hopefully) good pitching by Backe tonight.

We finally heard from UCLA via email. Also this week: New Mexico, U. Virginia.

I think we should all brace ourselves for an onslaught of post-Nov. 1 invites (at least those of us who haven't heard from all programs yet). Here's hoping, anyway. 🙂

I must have gotten ahead of myself (aka confused). I received an invite from UT Houston. Thanks for the correction. I also need to add UCSD to the invite list.

Patiently waiting for others, especially UCSF and U Wash.

Keep the updates coming! 🙂

mount sinai and brown by email today. the email from brown looked very suspiciously like a virus--totally blank but with an attachment. i was kind of scared to open it but figured anything titled "interview" should probably be opened at the risk of computer death...

have any non-phd people heard from ucsf or brigham yet? if anyone's interested, i'm starting a path rotation at ucsf next week so i'll probably be able to answer some questions about the program once i get acculturated.

Also heard from UCLA by email yesterday. They were the last school to download my available materials, and the first west coast school to make me an offer. I also received the Baylor letter yesterday. Tomorrow is the 15th, so perhaps there will be a little flurry of offers handed out.

i got an invite from uscf friday, and i'm one of those straight out of college to medschool, no research experience. who knows what they saw in my application. 😕
so far, i have a yes from BIDMC, MGH, MCV-VCU, and UCSF.
nothing from U Arizona, U Colorado, Hartford, Rush, U Chicago, Boston U, New England MC, Brigham, UNC, Duke, OHSU, Temple, T Jeff, U Penn, Brown, UVA, or U Washington.
maybe i'm too much of a worrywart like everyone else on this thread, but i sorta get the feeling the places i haven't heard from have already rejected me and are not even going to bother telling me to take a hike. i think it sucks that some programs don't have the decency to even let you know, so that you can pick up the pieces and move on with your life. 😡

btw, i will be doing a rotation in path at OHSU next month, so i'll give anyone who's interested the dirt. it just occurred to me that maybe programs don't give out interviews if they know you will be doing an away rotation there. i mean, if they like you, they've had more than ample opportunity to get to know you, and if they don't like you, why should they waste an interview slot on you?

I was feeling all worried about MGH as many of you have heard from them and I hadn't. As the days went by, I felt more and more that maybe they dont' like me 🙁.
I received an invite from them early this morning which was a pleasant surprise. I hope that what we're going through is a reflection of some randomness in the interview invitation timing matter and that you will hear from more schools in the weeks to come.

I received Mount Sinai today by email!! Woo! Hoo! I heard they have six spots this year. Is this true?

Hi. I'm a long time reader, first time poster 🙂
I just wanted to say congrats to all of those who have interviews!
I'm one of those people who have zero interviews, so I'm thinking of applying to some more places. I'm so scared right now!

If I were you, I would go ahead and apply to a few more programs (this coming from someone who applied to about 35). You have nothing to lose except a little cash (which in the long term amounts to small change).

Good luck!

Yep, that would by Baylor Houston. I'm sure they get a kick out of sending us thin white envelopes after weeks of silence. :meanie:

Cornell has also broken their silence as well. They sent me an email invite.

UWashington-Seattle too.

No interviews yet, but I finally did apply (yaay). Small steps.

I got Cornell today as well! Yeah! Yeah!
Well that sums up my interview list:
Cornell
Mt. Sinai
Columbia
Einstein
NYU

Hey Andy, why did you only apply to Cornell in New York and not Columbia or Mt. Sinai? Just curious?

Looks like I won't need a refill!

Hmm...good question. I really don't know. I guess I enjoyed the times I've spent in Manhattan...I visited Manhattan semi-often back in the day since my cousin lives there. It's not a great reason but oh well...

When I applied to MSTP programs, Cornell was the only NY school I applied to as well. It was a tough choice when I was deciding between matriculating at Michigan (where I am now) or Cornell as those were the highest up programs (of those I was actually accepted to) on my list when applying. So I guess I had a little bit of bias towards Cornell.

Sure, I could've applied to Columbia and Mt. Sinai. It's not like I have anything against those programs. But I already had 20 programs on my list and I set 20 as my limit when applying to ERAS.

Congrats on getting the Cornell interview. I knew you've been waiting for it for quite some time 🙂 In fact, you got interviews at all the NYC programs you applied to right so rock on! 👍

Invitations

UT San Antonio
UT Knoxville
New Mexico
St Louis University
UVA
Oklahoma
University of Nebraska
University of Arizona

Still Waiting on my 3rd letter of rec. A few programs (Wash U., Texas Tech, and Duke) have stated they need all the letters before they will do invitations.

Is anyone else having trouble scheduling at Iowa?

I've emailed twice already.

I'd call but I'm away from home till early November.

The urgency: I'm trying to interview late November!

deschutes,

my impression is that it would be best to call. i'm just a control freak though and i like knowing that i can schedule an interview when talking in person to the residency coordinator. perhaps they may have not gotten the emails, for whatever reason, and it would suck to get screwed just because of that.

Thanks. I won't be able to sleep tonight 😉 Hopefully there is a way of making a long-distance call to the US from this town without having to go in search of a phonecard!

(This is southern Alberta after all, and my dinner is served 15 minutes away by foot.)

My updated list (but not in order, because I can't remember--if anyone wants specific dates I would be happy to look it up)

1. JHU
2. BWH
3. UCSF (no PhD here, some research in college and med school though)
4. UCLA
5. UCI
6. UCSD
7. Cedars Sinai
8. Stanford

Nowhere seems to have the dates open I want in order to schedule interviews somewhat close in space and time. 😡

At how many schools do people intend to interview? I was thinking about picking only my top 8 or so, assuming I get any more invites.

I'm really hoping for that second wave. Since most here are AMG's you really don't have much to worry, although the number of unmatched US grads went up in the last couple years.

I've applied to 40 programs (and another 22 backups in another field), my wallet is empty... and us peasants (IMG's) are always in a world of hurt. I applied a little late last year (around this time) to 40 programs and received 0 interviews. Instead of settling for something else, I refused to quit and re-applied this year, with improvements in my application (and the fact that I've graduated).

3 interviews
Orlando Regional
Nassau University
(TBN)

2 rejections
Mt. Sinai
NY Pres Columbia

I know the general rule is that its best not to pursue a pathology residency in a community hospital, but for me its that or nothing. (well, or backup FP & Psych).

I think mid November (based on experience) is a good time to worry.

Congrats on the interviews! I too would rather go to a little community program than go into any other speciality. Unlike many of my peers I am LOOKING FORWARD to residency. 😍 How shocking.

Has anyone heard from any of the 3 NJ programs yet, and if so, do you mind if i ask if you are IMG or not? I have applied to these programs, and have not heard anthing yet? not even reception of my applications....well, it could be due to the fact that my transcript and deans letter are not in yet, and only 1 LOR is in, but just wondering,.....thaks

University of Virginia today, after I sent an email saying that my app was finally complete. 👍

That is definitely a factor. Many programs wait for at least 2 LOR's and a transcript. When your app does become complete i would send them an email to let them know. I did that today and got an invite from UVA.

UCSF today - has anyone heard about their Molecular Medicine Training Program? This sounds like something I would be very interested in, but I don't know much about it. This sounds very cutting edge and forward-thinking, as many pathologists have told me that the days of morphologic classification by H & E and "browns" is fading, to be replaced by molecular categorization. This seems to be already evident today in hematopathology, but it will happen in surg path eventually, too.

Here's my updated list of interviews, in order of receipt:

1) JHU 8) Ohio State
2) Cleveland Clinic 9) University of Virginia
3) UTSW 10) MGH
4) B&W 11) Columbia
5) Case University 12) Stanford
6) Wash U 13) Michigan
7) U Penn 14) UCSF

I haven't heard from: University of Washington, Cornell, UCLA, Duke (sent me an email but no interview yet), and Baylor (they wait for Dean's letter).

Holy cow - what a crazy and expensive couple of months Dec and Jan will be. Thank God my wife works. 🙂 Speaking of which, I hear very good things about Virginia, but what about Charlottesville. My wife is a computer programmer, and we worry about her being able to find a job there.

My final list of interviews in no particular order consists of:
(1) Cleveland Clinic
(2) Vanderbilt
(3) Brigham
(4) JHU
(5) MGH
(6) BIDMC
(7) UNC
(8) UCLA
(9) UCSF
(10) Stanford
(11) UWashington
(12) WashU
(13) UVA
(14) Emory
(15) Cornell
(16) UChicago
(17) Michigan
(18) UPenn

Still haven't heard a damn thing from Mayo and Duke. Screw 'em. Never was really thinking of going there anyway.

What's up with Duke? I was surprised to have not heard back from them. Oh well.

Also, from reading the board, it seems you're an MD/PhD student - one word of caution with Emory. As you probably know, every state has its own rules for the time gap that can exist betwen taking step I and step III. Most states, however, have an exemption for MD/PhD students. Unfortunately, Georgia has a 7 year rule with no exemptions - one of their own students had to re-take step I to get it to fit within the 7-year rule. I really wanted to interview at Emory because I have heard very good things about them, but this was a problem for me. I didn't even apply (the thought of re-taking step I is too much for any program). Maybe you got your PhD in 3 years - if so, it should be no problem. Otherwise, check your time course carefully.

Duke is smoking crack geddy...that's OK, they can keep their crack; Andy says "No" to drugs.
Yeah I am aware that some states have this 7 year rule and that MD/PhD students can be exempted from them and all it takes is a simple letter from your MD/PhD program director to explain your situation for that exemption to be honored by the state licensing dudes. It is shocking that a state would have absolutely no exceptions to the rule. Thanks for the heads up regarding this issue 🙂
Depending on when you applied, I suspect that you should hear from Washington, UCLA, and Cornell soon.

This issue was raised in the interview invitation I received from UCSF as well. At that point, I didn't know much about the program or whether it existed. I looked at their website (http://medicine.ucsf.edu/molmed/index.html) and it seems that it's another MD/PhD type of proposition...first you do a few years of clinical and then you do a few years of research. This program used to be offered to those only going into internal medicine. However, they expanded the program to fit 2 people in from peds and 2 people from pathology.

I'm a first time poster 😀 .

Tufts
BU (interview)
Brown
Yale (interview)
SUNY Upstate (interview)
SUNY Stonybrook
NYMC
Albert Einstein (interview?)
Columbia
Mt Sinai
Cornell (interview)
NYU (interview)
UMDNJ Newark
UMDNJ New Brunswick
U Penn
Temple
Thomas Jefferson
Drexel (interview)
U Maryland
George Washington (interview)
UCSF
UCLA (interview)
UCSD

Weird thing about Montefiore is that their program director sent me an e-mail clearly inviting me for an interview like a month ago. I called the residency coordinator and she said that I was not invited unless all my stuff was in. I didn't want to raise a fuss and it seemed logical anyway since at that time none of my letters were in. Now all my stuff is in (minus the Dean's letter). I feel like I should call them or something so that they don't think I was blowing them off with the initial invite a month ago.

Also when would be an "acceptable" time span to schedule an interview if you're waiting for more programs in the same area so you can schedule interviews in bunches?

I now have Minnesota this Friday (I'll let yall know how it goes), Drexel Dec 4, and Tennessee- Memphis Dec 20.
I'm thinking of applying to a few more programs since I only applied to 13. I think I might be getting the shaft from Utah, New Mexico, and UTSW since other people are getting the nod and I'm not. (Damn UTSW- I'm from Dallas!) And LSU-Shreveport and Jeff don't sound like they are going to interview too many people. My application has been complete for nearly a month. Coincidentally, the secretary at Tennessee told me that she has already received twice the number of apps they had last year at the application deadline. Lots more American MDs too. Guess path is getting more competitive. Just my luck. 🙂

Anyone know anything about UT- Memphis?

Got the Brigham today.

More to come (I hope). 😉

UCSD and Wash U today by email. 👍

I also got one from UCSD by e-mail, Columbia by e-mail, and Mt Sinai by snail mail.

I was going to post that there seems to be a lull in interviews, but it looks like they are still trickling in. I'm hoping for a new wave after November 1st.

i've been blessed so far in terms of interiews offered, esp from some decent places...

but today... 🙁

got my first rejection, and a major one: DUKE.
Ironically, I JUST YESTERDAY got in my final LOR that i've been waiting for since JULY!!!!...so i figured i'd be hearing from some places that'd been holding out. -------> I guess i did. Hell, i hope the letter didn't say: "PLEASE don't accept this applicant to your program. I disrecommend (is that a word??) them highly..." 😕

Yeah, I got my rejection email from Duke today. Ouch! That stings!

Welcome to the club, got my rejection from Duke weeks ago 🙂

Anyone heard from USC other than, "Thanks for applying - We want your Dean's Letter." ?

SAGE

long time lurker-

waiting on duke 😕, dartmouth, rush, u chicago, florida, mcv/vcu

i have interviews at mount sinai, cornell, and nyu but only can to go to two. anyone know anything about how these programs compare regarding:
strength of cp programs, quality of teaching, happiness of residents/work hours, or facilities?

plus, does anyone know what's up with mount sinai's financial status? i keep hearing rumors that its financial problems are getting worse.

i recently heard from ucsf and brigham, still waiting on u chicago, u wash.
