Of course you are perfect fit if you like Godel and Bach too, but it is not necessary... 😀

Sorry for polluting the purpose of the thread....SUNY Buffalo here. I am quite anxious at the turnout of my interviews.....Just 3 so far....Do you guys think i should be calling up the programs?

Congratulations, quant!!! 🙂 If it makes you feel any better, I've only heard from 2 of my programs (minus the 2 rejects, which I don't count 😛 ).

Good luck in Buffalo! Waive when you pass by Rochester!

Ditto. My interview list now includes the following:

New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Iowa, Vermont, OSU, OHSU, UVA, Emory, Wisconsin, and South Carolina.

I think this will be it even if I get more offers, as I am starting to run out of days to pick and I don't think I am going to see my husband at all during late Nov/early Dec as I will be perpetually zig-zagging across the US. 🙂

Invite from MGH and NYU!!!!
I applied to MGH even though I thought I would never get an interview (I'm not a very strong candidate), but what can I say it's Harvard and I had to give it try! I am very excited; now i'm looking more into Boston programs. I've never been to Boston so I don't know what to expect. How does it compare to NYC as far as expensiveness, cleaniness, diversity... ?

I never did hear from MGH. 🙁

It depends on the part of Boston and NYC. Don't know much about NYC except for that Manhattan is an expensive place to live. Boston is expensive too. If you end up at MGH and you end up living on Beacon Hill or Cambridge, it'll cost you a pretty penny. At BWH, a lot of the residents live in Brookline within walking distance to the hospital. Brookline is quite expensive but it's an attractive place for people with kids because the school district is one of the best in MA. If you live farther away in let's say Allston or Jamaica Plain, the prices go down and you get more living space but overall, still expensive.

As for diversity, NYC gets the prize.

As for cleanliness, well again, it depends on your location. Brookline and Allston and half of Jamaica Plain is pretty clean. Cambridge is nice too. As for NYC, I only know about Manhattan and that area is pretty damn nice.

Congratulations.

Congrats! I still have yet to hear from MGH. I'm holding a spot on my interview schedule for them thoughif they decide they want to talk to me. 🙂

After much thought, I decided to decline interviews at GWU and Colorado. I am pretty happy with my interview list, and maybe in the future I'll live and work in these areas, but I need to stay east coast and I dont think I can afford or put up with traffic in DC for now. So if anyone is waiting on these places, there should be a spot which opened up for an interview.

Thanks uhoh. I am sorry if I sounded like I was whining about being so busy traveling. I do realize I am blessed to have these interviews and am very happy about it. I am just a little stressed about all of the traveling to be done and all the money it requires. 😳
Anyway, congrats on your call. I sure there will be more in the future 🙂

Anyone heard from UW yet?

Hi everyone,
i was just wondering if people who interview at the end- say in Jan- are at a disadvantage than those interviewing at the beginning? Like the interviewers are sick of interviewing and have already picked their choices?

Or is it the opposite that if u interview at the end people will remember u better?

Thanks!

People have different opinions on this. I have heard both, and also heard that it doesn't matter. I am not considering any of this in my planning - I am just trying to group interviews geographically.

Honestly, I don't think it matters much. If they like you, they like you. If you interview early and they express interest, you should reciprocate...that keeps you on their radar.

In retrospect, I'm not a staunch supporter of interviewing at your more preferential programs late so that you can make a more lasting impression. You will get tired and burnt out from interviewing. So you can imagine that the programs will be kinda burnt out too.

You can be safe by interviewing anytime between November and early to mid January.

Terrif, thank you so much!

Don't worry too much about interviewing early or late. As Andy says, if they like you they like you. I think it is more of an issue for the interviewee - sometimes people get burnt out by the end of the season and can't fake as much enthusiasm any more. The other way to look at it is that you have had many interviews and are familiar with it and perform better as you go along. Different for everybody. The only thing on the program end is that sometimes when people interview later they may ask how seriously you are considering their program a little more often, as by that point many people have their rank lists in mind already.

For me is a dry day... Waiting for more calls..

Thanks

Me too. Just out of curiosity (not freaking out or anything), when do programs stop granting interviews? If you haven't heard from a program yet is it safe to say that you missed the first cut? Maybe you more experienced residents can enlighten me.

Me too. The silence is Kiiiiiiillllllllllllllliiiiiiiiinnnnnnnngggggg me. It is a slow painful death.

Ps- Don't mind me- I took step 2 today and I am a little brain dead. Now I must go drink beer... Lots of it.

All dry here, too.

I don't think a lot of the NY programs (at least the upstate ones...) have even started interviewing yet (U of Rochester hasn't started. I know because I was up there on Friday doing a little "snooping"! 😎 )

Congrats on finishing Step 2, Buttercupp!

Interview invitations are not finished, don't worry, there will be more. Our PD here said they are going to invite a bunch more within a couple of weeks. His numbers: 85-90 US grads applied to our program this year (so far) and a couple hundred IMGs. So far they have offered 40+ interviews I think.

Application #'s up from last year...

Are you going anywhere with this? I'm curious.

congrats on finishing step2 buttercupp! 🙂 :luck:

my rotation is sooo cool! liking the subject more each day, and seeing things we used to only hear about in my country..as an index, i get up at around 5 every morning (to make the commute) but with a smile! 🙂

however, there was a hint of a dark cloud here..today, the attending who i was with for the last 4 days told me i seemed interested, but "passive".he thought i should ask more questions. now i am a "seen-but-not-heard-too-much" kind of person. i don't see the point asking stupid questions for their own sake. i don't want to be a pain in the @$$ by asking all the questions that come to my head. i mean, he was the head of the Cytology lab, and sits with a PGY3.they used to whiz past the slides..now, i couldn't understand much i admit. still, those guys are to be so flooded with work, i didn't want to keep going:"what's that?what's that?" all the time..and its not like i didn't ask questions, just used to ask the resident when he was free, not the Prof. the resident is very friendly, and goes over the slides with me before we go for the sign out with the prof.
is this a big deal, or am i being paranoid as usual? 😕 :scared: 😳

I would recommend asking more questions since that is what the faculty member recommended. But I think so much of this grade stuff is out of our hands - I busted my butt in surg path, and genuinely WAS enthusiastic (not faking!) and still just got a pass. I slacked on surgery and made no effort to fake enthusiasm and got honors. So just do your best and try not to worry about the outcome.

The extent of my going anywhere, would be that the program coordinator remarked to me two weeks ago that application #'s were higher than at that same point last year.

And we're taking 4 first-years this year.

UC Davis by e-mail. 🙂 Finally the 2 weeks of silence broken!!!

Me four.

Can someone expound a little on the "Mayo way" and it being different from the "regular way". I've read on this site before that it may be tough to transition to private practice or other academic institutions. I think LADooc or someone even hinted that it might be a negative in terms of post residency placement (although their website testifies otherwise).

My interview schedule is pretty full and I'm trying to decide whether or not to go take a look.

What I heard is that they sign everything out on frozens... I don't know if that is true or not. The guys I'm working w/ right now were the ones who told me (they are a bunch of practical jokers, so I don't believe much of what they say.)
They also said they used to have a guy in their group who graduated from Mayo and that he had very peculiar ways of doing things.
I don't know if this answers your question so much as makes everything seem more mysterious 😉

You know, the same thing happened to me! I sent an email back asking why I received over 30 messages...no doubt some sort of computer error... +pissed+

Don't worry about Hopkins, Dr.Nick! Another lucky program will get you, and they will be thankful that Hopkins didn't take you. This is what I say to myself, too. 😉

Re: "The Mayo Way"... yaah wrote up a pretty comprehensive post about this time two years ago - the link is here:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=896273&postcount=63

(I am surprised that Google is working just as well as the internal Search function!)

One of our 4th (5th?) years is doing his surg path fellowship at Mayo (long story) - and he likes it there. As a fellowship though, I don't know about residency. He says it's nice because you get the outside H&E consults, and get to compare it with the toluidine blue. It's pretty fast-paced, from what I hear. Previewing time might be a concern for some.

I didn't apply there. For no other silly reason than I just couldn't see myself living in Rochester for 4 years. 🙂

So I don't know if the information has changed since, and if so, how much.

Thanks for linking to yaah's post - very helpful.

I actually would LOVE to live in Rochester. I'm more of a small town gal.

I am thinking about going to interview up there. I have a really clear top 6 choices in my mind that I am definitely going to interview at and am really excited about. Problem is, I don't feel like I can rank only those 6. So then after that there are about 10 more programs that are really good places, but I don't want to go on near that many interviews. So I am having trouble choosing a few from this group to go to interview.
