Who thinks this thing is going to rock? Who thinks these things are going to start being required by some medical schools like the iphone/ipod touch

it's a larger, crippled iphone that doesn't multitask, oh and it doesn't support flash. you might as well spend your money on a computer, and just get an iphone/ipod touch.

Well the flash thing i think might be changed.. i know my iphone doesnt support flash who knows lol..

It is stupid. I wouldn't be caught dead with one. It's huge, people want something inconspicuous. If I'm on the subway and pull that thing out everyone stares. If I have an iphone no one even notices. It is almost absurd to the point of being a joke. didn't they do focus groups on this or something?

That looks so lame. iPad = Swollen iPhone. I'll keep my $499, thanks.

I was surprised by how middle-of-the-road it is. I was expecting a tablet version of the Macbook. Instead, it looks like they aimed for a lower priced, less capable type of device to fill the gap between iPhone and full computer. The price is right, but for me, the performance isn't.

At first glance I thought, "Wow, nice, Apple finally made a tablet!" Then I looked on the Apple website.

Reaction: 😡

If it were actually a computer, I would think it's cool.

Instead, it's just an app runner running on iPhone OS. PASS

Could be cool for textbooks if it were cheaper though. Would be much nicer to have them all electronically on there and have them searchable, etc than the big bulky paper versions. Not for a $500 pre-payment, though.

Hilariously, the quicktime plugin for chromium crashes every time I try to view the promo vid.:laugh::laugh:

Actually, this device is pretty much everything I needed apple to do with a tablet device. There were a couple of things I wanted that I didn't get, but those would have been icing.

Congratulations Serenade, you are number 2 on my list of people who like this thing. Approaching the release, I discussed with my friends (fanboys and anti-fanboys represented) about what a home run, average, and iCube iTV iHiFi level of failure would look like. Even the most conservative was still far too optimistic.

Meh, I'm not too excited by it. It's not really a hugely innovative concept.

Neh.. im not really that interested in it.. i just like the ibook work thing..

Need to have better textbook availability for that to work out - I debated getting a kindle for the same reason but the selection just isn't up to snuff (at least with what amazon has set up now - I know there are rumors apple will have more/better partnerships with publishers)

It looks like it might be a nice toy, but I don't see it being practical enough to replace a PDA. I doubt it will ever be required.

Its a reason i like it, E-books in the template of a iPad could be very effective. The iPad will likely be the first in a line of E-book holders with a book store, well maybe textbooks per semester will now cost.. 30 bucks each instead of 200.

That thing just looks like a giant version of the iPod touch combined with a Kindle rip-off. Did I miss something in the description of its features? I didn't see anything that it can do that the iPhone/iPod touch can't.

highly unlikely in my opinion, textbooks are expensive because of the intellectual property involved...not just the tons of paper

Not really.. just go to amazon.com, most books are 30 bucks if your fine buying the last edition ( a.k.a the same thing). Textbook prices are driven up by the fact that colleges claim they are new and cutting edge.

Believe it or not, when you buy a textbook, quite a bit of the cost comes from paper, ink, and binding. That's why you can buy the cheapo softcover, lower quality international editions for a quarter of the U.S. price.

E-textbooks are definitely not $30 though. They're more like $80 if the book is fairly new.

I stand by my assessment. I cannot see a monopoly on textbook supply resulting in prices in 30 dollar range.

I am not saying that paper doesn't cost but publishers milk the info inside them for money not the excuse that they had to pay for allllllllllllll that paper..you know?

W/E, no matter how advanced the ebook capabilities get, I cannot see myself replacing my books. I remember where to look for things better in a paper book. The end of my speech.

Could they have come up with a worse name? i-PAD.

Pad??? Really? Not like i-touch xtreme. Or, giant iphone?? They had to bring the word 'pad,' into it.

no one at apple saw this (it's older obviously) and said ..... ehhhh, no??

No Flash
No Multitasking
No USB ports
No Camera
$130+ for 3G version which means paying 600+ for the thing or being tethered to a hotspot.
Have to use ATT 3G'
Lame resolution: 1024x768 = How will I enjoy HD on this?

It is basically a crippled netbook. Just get a new smartphone later this year. That or wait for the 3 generation model when they fix all these issues.

With that said, I predict major demand for the product simply due to the brand. Sigh...

This just made me realize that I will absolutely NEVER buy an iPad. What a total rip off...just like all of apple's other products. Seriously? Starting at $499 with only 16GB and no 3G? I bet this thing would tank if it was a different brand.

I'd like to change my previous definition: iPad = overly expensive iPod touch for the farsighted.

I won't but an iPad. iPeriod.

iPod was a good name. Now they just take random words and slap an i in front.

I was really hoping that it was going to be a macbook with tablet capabilities. This thing is not even remotely practical for a student. v. disappointing.

I honestly see the "iPad" being discontinued within a few years.

No flash (sorry Hulu lovers)!
No multitasking.
No camera.
No voice capability.
No USB.

And the...iPhone OS? Apple decided to be cheap, and actually put the iPhone OS on this thing as opposed to Mac OSX.

Just look at the home screen...it looks SO lame. Look at the spacing between the icons. Not to mention that really hot 2" of bezel on the side of the screen...🙄

Honestly, I'm surprised Apple released this. My Palm Pre does more than this device.

iPhone OS 4.0 will multi-task.

Rumors were that it was going to be called the Slate which I thought was pretty good. But as the owner of both an iPhone and Macbook, I really can't find a single thing that the iPad would be better at.

If anyone can, please enlighten me.

this just looks terrible.. dude.. if I wanted such a huge thing w/ wifi.. im might as well get laptop.. some services even let 3G in laptops.. so Y iPad? and y not the traditional all so good.. net or laptops..

I'm trying to think of a purpose for this thing. Who is intended to use it? For most professionals/students, a laptop can do much more and is just as portable as the iPad (worst...name..ever by the way). The iPad can do most things an iPhone can do (except make calls) but is far less portable. Is there a target market for this item or does Apple just assume the public will buy anything Steve Jobs tells them to buy?

I think this just might be Apple's first miss in a while.

Probably, but it's a pebble in the pond with all their successes ... compare it to the clusterf&*k that IS Windows Vista, and it seems so minimal.

and I'm a PC man 😱

I think that it's their response to the Kindle. They even advertise an app called iBook on the website. IMO Kindle > iPad.

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/27/three-reasons-the-ipad-wont-kill-amazons-kindle/ ---> Nuff said.

Apple used to come up with some innovative things. Now it seems they just make glossy slates of metal with screens on them. iTouch, iPhone, iPad all look the same just different sizes. 😛

I use my Ipod touch to surf the internet on campus when I don't want to haul around my laptop and I was looking to purchase a book reader and possibly a netbook. This looks like a solid alternative. And I mean the price isn't half bad, my Ipod touch was 500$(thank god it was a gift.)!

1. It's not going to replace a laptop because it doesn't have the hardware or OS.
2. It's not going to replace a phone because it's HUGE.

You can make an argument about it replacing a netbook for note-taking, travel duty, etc. The problems with this, though, include:

a. No USB ports, no hdmi, no flash, and no multitasking.
b. It's $200 more (for less technology).

I just don't see the point.

i'm not a fan of the ipad or of apple in general, but the target/niche I see it fulfilling is the group of people who commute daily. these people often are reading books/magazines or using kindles or listening to their ipods and doing stuff on their iphone anyway, so this serves as a way to combine all of that.

also, i like to use my laptop while watching tv sometimes (especially sports), so i could potentially see people lazing on a couch in front of the tv with it

iPad = fail

'nuff said

I think the iPad is dumb, this coming from an Apple supporter. However, I think the real development is Apple's entrance into the digital book market. If this is anything like their entrance into music and movies, then I can see the possibility for success here.

The ridiculous thing here is to see whether their digital "bookstore" (which is sure to quickly become quite expansive) is enough to drive sales of an otherwise unimpressive and stupid device.

I doubt the bookstore will do them any good. If people are willing to spend at least $499 to read e-books then why wouldn't they just buy a Kindle 2 for $200 less? Even Apple has to fail sometime, and I think this is it.
