Is it safe to have a delay before submitting Prelims/Transitional Years?

Quick question.

I'm applying to advanced positions. Now, for a lot of these places I'm pretty certain I'm going to get an interview at, and so I'm going to go ahead and apply for a prelim medicine position or transitional year at the same city/institution, and hopefully set it up so I can interview at the same time for both.

However, there are other places which I may apply and not be accepted for an interview, or maybe they get cut because I can't fit them in my schedule. I'd prefer to delay applying for prelims or transitional years in these areas until I can be sure I'm actually going on the interview.

So my questions is basically, is it okay to delay applying for a transitional year or preliminary year at a program until I've already offered an interview there for my advanced position, or should I just hedge my bets and apply there early in September?

Hmm...hate to bump my own post but I'm really curious about this.

I'd just apply early.

I added some applications for prelims in late October after a change in my geographic needs, and my interview yield was much lower on that batch vs. the ones I submitted in September - about 25% vs. >90% for the first ones.

That was my thought as well. You can try to set up interviews at these less desirable cities as late as they allow, and if the advanced program interviews don't come through in the interval, you can always cancel them. But it certainly would be an easier question if the advanced programs tended to answer about interviews first, which they reportedly don't.

Thanks Jeebus, this is what I was looking for.

Do i simply choose 'Internal Medicine'? or is there a separate category for applying to preliminary programs? I want to apply to Neurology.

thanks

Just to clarify, when you Search For Programs and select "Internal Medicine" and whatever state, the programs that come up will clearly have Categorical, Preliminary, etc., available as check-boxes when you select the program.
