Does anyone here know of anyone who applied to Dental school this late and managed to get accepted? I know that most schools go on a rolling admission system, so there's hope.

There are a few schools that have Feb. 1 and March 1. deadlines, so I'll be able to make those deadlines. Here's my dilemma. I haven't taken my DAT yet, and was wondering if it's okay to get my application in by the deadline, but wait a month or so to take the DAT?

hi KoEoVo1oN...i've got the same question.......my buddy told me thats u can apply late at the same year..if u got high GPA & DAT scores...it depends at the school itself ...good luck!! 👍 :luck:

if i was in your situation, i would wait till next year to apply. if you apply by the deadline, you must have your dat scores taken by the time you apply. its getting late in the cycle as it is, and i know a lot of schools have most of their interview spots filled. if you are really serious about appying for this cycle, i would contact the schools you are planning to apply to, and ask them what are your chances of being accepted. Unless your stats are superb, i would just wait till next year.

Agreed. If you submitted your AADSAS today I do not think you would get an interview unless you had an incredibly strong application. Your best bet is to wait until next cycle.

My cummulative GPA is above a 3.5, and my science GPA is above a 3.7. As for the DAT, I might be rushing it and might not have enough time to prepare. CAn i take my DAT after the deadline?

your stats are pretty good. whether or not you can take the DAT after the deadline, you will have to contact the schools about that information. i know the deadline given, is the deadline that you have to submit your application to AADSAS, so the schools won't get your file until up to 8 weeks after the date you submit it, perhaps sooner. so lets say you apply to a school where the deadline is febuary 1st. you submit your application to AADSAS on january 31. lets assume they take four weeks to process, so the schools will receive your application march 1st. you say you want to take your DAT one month after you sumbit your application, so you take it march 1st and fax the scores to the schools. so technically, your application is complete since the schools will have your DAT scores and application at the same time. so i would say it might be okay, assuming the schools are willing to work with the unofficial DAT scores until your offical get sent from the ADA. but as mentioned earlier, you best bet is to contact the schools.

This isn't a busy time for AADSAS...I imagine they'll be able to get your application out within 2 weeks of receipt...but it *possibly* can take 8 weeks...as some of us found out in september

That is not true! It will take at least 4 weeks for AADSAS to process anything!
IMO, I think you should wait, save you a lot of money!!!
Here are my reasons (probably similar to other posts).
1) Your GPA is great! BUT You have not taken your DAT yet. As you probably already knew, DAT is not easy and you need TIME to prepare for it. For some people, a month would be enough if you dedicate that whole month to study only DAT. However, for others it may take longer. And if you do not do well on the first time, you have to wait for 90 days before you can retake. This means you pass the deadline.
2) Most schools are already filled with their interviews and acceptances. Some schools now only interview students for alternate lists. So you are competing for something that does not guarantee you a spot for this year.
3) If you apply next year, you will have better chances for sure.
4) Remember that many schools have secondary applications for you to fill out too. By the time you receive the secondary application from the schools, you will be really late. It tooks 4 weeks for my friend to get a secondary application from AZ school even though she applied in August.
5) You can SAVE a lot of money if you apply next year and guarrantee yourself a spot. If you apply this year and you do not get in, you have to reapply again. That is too much money to waste, not to mention your self-esteem will be degraded with rejections (rejections that you can avoid simply by applying early).

My overall advice to you is: a) give yourself enough time to prepare WELL for the DAT and atleast enough time to retake it (if you need to, but try to do well on the first time though), that means at least 1 month of studying + 90 days of waiting for retake b) apply in May or June with AADSAS (even without a DAT score, that is perfectly fine), c) with your GPA and hopefully 20+ on DAT, apply from 5-8 schools.

Good Luck!!!

I was in the same boat about a month ago, and decided to go ahead and give it a shot. I am studying for the DAT now and plan on taking it early January. I have a 3.9 sci and a 3.9 overall...my earliest deadline for schools was Feb. 1st, and many were March 1st. I ended up submitting my appication at the end of November. I was originally planning on graduating in December of 2005, but realized I could swing it Spring 2005 instead which is what made me decide to go for it this cycle. I don't know how realistic it is, but I wouldn't rule it out...I realize you don't have much time to think about it. By the way, some of you said it takes 8 weeks for AADSAS to send it out to the schools. How do you know when they send it out?

ALso keep in mind that not all dental schools are on rolling admission. I believe Meharry and Howard are not on a rolling admission. Your best bet if you want to get accepted somewhere would be to apply to those schools.

I was in your exact situation last year. I hadn't studied for my DAT and it was December and still hadn't applied. So I went ahead and applied Dec. 29th and started studied for my DAT during the break (a total of a week or less) and some in January and I was planning on taking it in Feb. It ended up that my classes in the Spring semester were just too demanding to add DAT studying, and I just never took it. So, in the end, it was a total waste of $$$, but that was my experience; yours may be quite different and it may be a successful one.

Thanks for all the input. I think it might be best for me to wait for the next cycle. I just didn't want to take a year off. I guess i can try to get a computer engineering job in the mean time and put my degree to use. once again, thanks!
