So, I just finished my first year of medical school, and like many of my peers I want to get a head start on Step 1. I was told by some of my MSIII and MSIV friends that studying Goljan over the summer would be beneficial.

I did some research about him and found out that he's actually a DO. To be honest, I'm now a little concerned about this guy being a "go to" source for Step 1. Does anyone else have an opinion about him? Is he a good source?

Lol. This guy knows his stuff. Listen to his audio, buy his Rapid Review Pathology book. I guarantee that he will be one of your best teachers in M2. 👍

With just a few enzymatic reactions he was able to turn water into wine.

Your post is so wrong at so many levels, I am not even sure that you are serious.

First off, you should just relax after the first year. Don't study! The bulk of Step 1 is Pathology and as such second year is really the time you need to be studying.

Second, it makes no difference if someone is a DO or an MD when it comes to teaching you about Step 1. As a matter of fact many of the Kaplan teachers are not even MDs. But if this is a concern to you rest assured that he is an MD. Check out his web page:

http://www.healthsciences.okstate.edu/college/biomedical/pathology/goljan.cfm

Third and finally, Goljan is the MAN. He has taught thousands and thousands of young doctors and he stands very well respected in the field of USMLE preparation. Personally, I have used his material for both Step 1 and Step 2 and have done terrific. If I cared enough I would use his stuff for Step 3 as well but I simply don't care enough to study, just want to pass. His Step 1 audio is THE BIBLE of Step 1 preparation for any student.

1. Goljan does a great job making connections between disciplines, something not all medical students can do well without a bit of assistance.
2. Goljan is an MD who teaches at a DO school.
3. What will separate most physicians is not their education or even their intelligence, but rather their commitment to continued education and to finding solutions for their patients. Outside of the ER, not all things require "immediate" answers, so the things that define good physicians are quite different from the things that define good medical students. I.e. DO vs MD is not a major concern, IMO. I'm sure one can logically make and support the argument that MD schools might put out better physicians "on average", thats much different from stating that a person (n=1) is less competent because of their degree--remember, they go through essentially identical training, especially in the all-important clinical and residency years.

Maybe research isn't your strong suit because Dr. Goljan is an M.D. -- not a DO. He graduated from Temple. He TEACHES at an osteopathic school. Good info is good info. I don't care if it comes from a D.O. or a D.O.G.

And studying Goljan over the summer would not be beneficial.

Ah the 1 post troll 😀
