Hi Everyone!

So there is an early acceptance med school program through MSSU and KCU-Joplin, which I am looking into. I am wondering if there are any students on SDN that have applied to the program, and might have some insight on the application/interview process. This past fall was the first application cycle, so there is not a lot of info available. I would greatly appreciate some help if anyone knows more, or has been through this specific process with this program.

It depends on what kind of person you are. Since it's a new school, admissions will likely be slightly easier. Resources may be limited as it's a new school but they'd likely be brand new. It has no prestige so if you want to do derm at mass gen for residency, maybe not. It's the "safe" option if you just want to be a doctor and don't care too much about where you might end up in terms of specialty or residency. It also lets you bypass the whole premed dance and song allowing you to do what you genuinely enjoy.

I really want to apply to this programme as well. I am hoping that since this is new Medical School, they will be a little more lenient. I think you should also think about BCOM.

Yeah I'm hoping that too! Unfortunately, I will only be able to apply to this program, due to various reasons. I have really been wondering what the interview process is like compared to traditional med school interviews, if there is a secondary app,etc. Just little things that I don't really want to ask admissions lol.

I am pretty sure the application is going to follow the same protocol, since the school is still under AACOMAS.

Yes, probably, except the application is through MSSU. Joplin is a really great town.

It has a nice variety. Spring and fall are really great, winter is a Midwestern winter, and summer is humid.

I am graduating from MSSU May of 17. Unfortunately this program was introduced my junior year so I was not eligible. As to the town its wonderful. Small enough that it doesn't take long to get anywhere but large enough that there is always something to do! Climate is typical crazy Missouri Weather. All four seasons, sometimes in the same week.

MSSU has more than prepared me for medical school. The professors are wonderful in the science department. Of course you have your favorites but overall they all are more than willing to go above and beyond to make sure you are prepared. As to if this will be easy to get into due to being a new school? No. KCU application will remain the same. As to going through the Yours to lose program if you do your part and get the grades and scores needed as well as having decent character I cant see why you wouldn't be accepted. If accepted into this pathway I can assure you they will be very clear as to what is expected of you. The politics are typically to a minimum from what the students experience so do what is asked and there will be no surprises.

As to the medical school itself. Currently it is almost completely tied with the Kansas City Campus since this fall will be the first class. Beautiful brand new facility in a quiet part of town just down the road from both hospitals. THIS IS A SATILITE campus not a brand new establishment. The class will be taught entirely in Joplin with its own staff for the most part. Some faculty from MSSU are transitioning and teaching for KCU which is a testament for the type of teachers southern has.

This is not an "easy" road to get to medical school. Southern may be small but the expectations are very high. With the growth of the biology department we have been gifted with a brand new chemistry lab which is state of the art and allows us to preform just about any experiments you wish. Currently Orgo 2 classes are working on created two step synthesis projects from start to finish.

Cadaver lab is also on campus with exposure to 2 cadavers a male and female that are fully dissected via our Advanced Human dissection class. Anatomy labs are given access to view and test off the cadavers but do not dissect them.

A new Building is being built from Gov. Nixon which will house even more new facilities but those details haven't been released. The science building is under renovation right now. Third floor which is Chemistry and Physics now, has been fully renovated and is wonderful! No doubt the rest will be as well!

I'm in vet school, so not a med student, but I just wanted to echo everything that glockgirl posted.

I graduated from MSSU with my BS in Biology in May 2016. The biology and chemistry faculty are all fantastic, passionate people who truly care about your learning and future goals. Something really nice about MSSU is that class sizes in the sciences, once you're past the basic 100-level classes, are very small (especially in upper level electives) so professors generally will know everyone on an individual first name basis. Being in vet school now, with a class of nearly 150, I really miss actually having a somewhat more intimate connection with the faculty. The rigor and expectations for some of the classes are quite high, as well, and I feel like I was more than prepared enough to tackle professional school when I finished. I have multiple former classmates and friends who've already been accepted into the inaugural class (via the traditional AACOMAS route) and they're all very excited to start this fall! I admittedly don't know much about the Yours to Lose track, but I have some good contacts whose info I can pass along to you through PM if you'd like.

Oh, and yes, I hear the advanced human dissection class and cadaver lab are absolutely amazing---no personal experience, but former classmates who took the course all speak quite highly of it. 😉

I'm a '14 graduate of MSSU. I echo what the others said about the school. I actually know of at least one professor that was at MSSU that will now be teaching Anatomy at KCU-Joplin. They definitely have quality instruction and the new labs are fantastic #notjealous.
