OMFG I'M STUCK BETWEEN BECOMING A JANITOR AT A MIDDLE SCHOOL AND BECOMING A DO!!!

HELP Me! WHAT DO I DO?!

Janitor Pros:

  • Free mop and glow
  • Access to closets
  • No overnight call
 
Seriously....take a deep breathe, relax and take as long as you need to make the decision. It is a very hard decision that I have actually made myself.

thats it eh? There aren't any pros for becoming a DO? Well that says enough already....become a janitor no doubt. The gpa and mcat averages are a little lower (altho higher than caribbean) so you really shouldnt have trouble getting in. Just make sure you konw a little bit about the middle school janitor "philosophy."

Also make sure that you've shadowed a janitor before. Some middle schools REQUIRE a janitor letter from another middle school janitors, but others will accept LORs from both high school and elementary school janitors. Its best to look up each individual school to see there requireemnts.

If you haven't shadowed a janitor kiss it all good bye. It's still early in the application season and janitor admissions are rolling, so get some good hours in and get that app submitted.
 
'Definitely Janitor. As you know, the pecking order for life degrees goes: MD > Caribbean MD > African MD > Mexico MD > DeVry University MD > Janitor > DO. The DO will follow you around your whole life and people will always look down on you as a dirty osteopath. You'll never be able to attract a single patient, and DOs can only practice family medicine in the mid-west. As you know, a Janitor opens all doors whereas the DO only slams them. Also, since everyone wants to practice internationally - and will for sure - the DO will only allow you to practice in 5-10 cities in the US where a janitor can clean anywhere. You should also be aware that I know this from shadowing over two physicians, each who told me that this is fact - plus I'm a pre-med and understand the workings of health care. '

why not become a janitor at a DO school? that way, you get the best of both worlds...
 
Its not easy to become a janitor , the last time i heard, the average stats for those that get accepted into the janitor program are:

MCAT -- 38 , thats if you apply early too (anything below 37, kiss your chances good bye)

GPA (in janitor courses)--3.97 (anything below 3.84, FORGET IT --u wont meet the cutoff)

Volunteer work: extensive janitor shadowing and working after hours on holidays.

Program: 7 year program (no summer off)- just learning to clean Sh***tt

You need Letters of Recommendations from three janitors with 40 years experience in the job...People travel across the country to F***king find these people. From what i heard there are only 5 left. The rest retired.

Its tuff, but it can be done.:luck:

best advice I've ever read on SDN. But on a more serious note, I work at a food production company doing chemical and microbiological analysis, and the janitors are some of the hardest working and nicest people there.

Aww, come on, get real. We all know there's no such thing as a middle school janitor "philosophy." Don't believe everything you hear. Pre-meds. 🙄 I'm getting tired of all the propaganda out there, about how middle school janitors are the stewards of the whole school, not just the caretakes of dirty floors, etc. All janitors practice to the same standard; you can't tell the difference between a middle school janitor and a high school janitor. They all use the mop and take out the trash the same way. The only difference is that middle school janitors have to learn middle school floor-polishing principles and practices, but most don't use it, anyway.

In my state, the top janitorial programs are very hard to get into. One in particular boosts a commanding 8 bathroom stalls. I mean it doesn't get better than that.All I can say is that the guys that work there know their Ajax cold! In fact I scrubbed in with them during one moring operation and they worked with lightning speed cutting through all the dirt,mildew,scum and molds with precision. I was in awe and fortunate to be the mop holder.
 
I want to be a janitor because you are better able to help people and make a difference in their lives. Nobody likes a puddle of vomitus.

Here's a few questions to think about to get you prepared for your janitor interview.

What is the national average for sq.ft. cleaned in public schools by custodians?

What are the three basic types of cleaners?

In the repair of sliding doors what is commonly overlooked?

What is the tool used by custodians that functions as a knife was well as a wrench?

During an interview at a top ranked Janitor school I was asked, and I quote:

"Have you ever considered the DO route?"

I was stunned...

Can you believe the nerve on the interviewer to ask such a stupid question?

:bang::bang:UGH ITS NOT FAIR. I've been contacting janitors constantly. I keep sending them messages asking to let me shadow them but nothing. I'm debating going to a middle school and vomiting on the floor just so I have an excuse to see one and maybe that will lead to shadowing?

If I'm lucky maybe he'd actually let me clean it up too 😍.

I hope I get in somewhere. I really appreciate the middle school philosophy, about cleaning the WHOLE mess instead of just the obvious vomit all over the floor.

I shall give you the one single serious answer in this entire thread, since one of my colleagues went through essentially the same thing. He had a good job (easy hours, great money) as an apartment complex maintenance man in Texas. As he tells the story, "I was installing a toilet I think - no, it was a garbage disposal - when I got the call that I got into med school (DMU). I had to think hard about it for a while - seriously!"

He ended up, of course, taking the med school route, and is now a board certified EM doc. But, as he told me, he did have to think about it - getting paid somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of what he makes now, strict 9-5 hours, and easy work.

Since working in the ICU doing in house 30 hour q4 call, I've been applying broadly to janitorial positions. But they state that as a D.O. I am under qualified for the position. I also do not have my MOP and GLOW safety certifications. I tried explaining that I am handy with a hemostat and a bovie and can use my skills to access locked high school lockers but they don't listen. 🙁

I've given up my janitorial dream. Instead I have applied to be Disney World's new "Chief Magical Officer." In this role, I will run around granting dreams to people in the park and I will fulfill my dream of participating as Mickey Mouse in the Hollywood Studios Fantasmic. Plus I can be close to Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers whom I am gigantic fans of! Here are the job perks:

  • No Call...ever.
  • No cleaning up vomit or feces as CMO.
  • No calling family members at 3am to discuss "code status"
  • Get to wear a nifty mickey mouse costume
  • Everyone loves you because they are at Disney!
  • No pimping!
  • Work in a place where everyone likes their job
  • Pediatric experience not confined to giving shots
  • Salary 3 times that of a lowly resident
  • No pager to wear. Have nifty earbud like secret service
  • Avoid midlife crisis by acting like a kid every day (AND YOU GET PAID!!! OMG!!!)
  • Get to sleep on a nice disney bed instead of a uncomfortable cot

The list goes on and on 👍
 
Maybe one of the schools will open a dual degree D.O./D.J. (Doctor of Janitorial Services) program...I sure we could get NIH/AJAX to provide scholarships
 
What about getting a degree in Custodial Maintenance instead of Janitorial Maintenance? The CM degree was started in 1867 by a Janitor who saw serious flaws in the American cleaning services industry.

Although Custodians were looked down upon at first, today they are legally recognized in all states, and are even gaining acceptance in a growing number of foreign nations. Together, Janitors and Custodians are recognized as the only complete maintenance/floor care professionals in the US.

C'Mon don't lead the guy on. Be upfront with him:

CCAS is the exam: Custodial College Admissions and ****. This is a very, very difficult exam whereby you will be tested on
1) Math: for example, If you have 26oz of concentrated Mr. Clean and a 30oz bucket, how many times can you mop the gym floor before you need to change the water?
2) Physics: for example: You just mopped the hallway after a long day of school. A 5th grader comes running in for his missing homework, what is his trajectory when said student hit the water running at 5m/s?
3) Chemistry: Adding bleach to Ammonia is bad. True or False
4) Anatomy: You are are in the boys bathroom mopping up and notice that the toilet seat is down, but that the crap you are mopping up is white. What is the possible reason this student did not have a normal color of ****?

Next you have to apply to the various Custodial Colleges. Once you get an interview, you had better know how to sponge a blackboard using the proper Custodial Techniques. They want someone who WANTS to be there. They will ask you if you applied to schools like NYU, Columbia, and any of the California Allopathic Medical Schools to see if you really want to be there or if you are using their school as backup.

Finally, you need to take the visual test. You need to be able to watch a the segment of Joe Dirt and tell them what he did wrong.

When you get your acceptance, you need to submit a urine sample and $3000 to hold your place. They get an average of 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 applications for only 150 seats so the competition is fierce.

Hey guys, I graduated from a DO school and currently doing an apprenticeship at an inner city middle school with school custodial staff (great exposure to all of crap)

Once I'm done with this apprenticeship, will I be allowed to call myself a janitor?

I tried to petition the AOA to accept my first year of janitoriship as equivalent to the AOA but they laugh ... am I doomed for employment in the 10 states that require an AOA-approved janitoral apprenticeship?

Can I work as a janitor on humanitarian missions? Or will 3rd world countries not recognize my training and think I'm just some person who only knows how to use the Swiffer wet jet to clean hardwood floors?

Yeah but I talked to this janitor who said the custodians didn't know a water retention O ring from a faucet divergant O ring. He said all custodians are idiots and didn't really go to janitorial school. I believe that this one custodian and one janitor's opinion are representative of the rest of the world, so I don't want to get a CM.

Those who can do, those who can't become custodians. You can't even compare a custodian to a janitor, its just insulting.

It is true that, as a Custodian, you may face some difficulties in obtaining some of the more competitive Janitorial apprenticeships. Trust me though, it CAN be done. I have seen custodians who were Chiefs of Housekeeping & Maintenance at MAJOR institutions.

it is not that funny when you are on the other side.....he did not have opportunities and did the best he could....he works hard and we got by....

I understand the joke but sometimes you have to think there are some people that are janitors and they are people too....

Actually, it's still funny. My mother cleans houses and is an "environmental service aid" (aka janitor) in a hospital because she didn't have the same opportunities as an immigrant. You're not really hurt are you? Wait, are you being sarcastic or serious? Confounded internet.

On a more serious note, want to hear a cool story? My friend interviewed at WakeForest med several years back. graduated in 2009 from UMiami med, but anyhow, so the year he was interviewing they told him at Wakeforest this guy who was a janitor used to study the anatomy parts and read books at night and teach himself the stuff that is in the gross anatomy labs. One day some professor caught him and gave him a challenge. if he passed a test he would sponsor his education. the guy then got his BA and I don't know if he did a MS or MA as well. But I remember my friend told me the guy ended up becoming a TA for the anatomy class. It was like a case of good will hunting with Matt Damon.

Dude take a chill pill. The point of this thread was not to make an insult to another job but to show how ludicrous some of these. Do this job vs. that job threads are. He could've inserted any other job. It was just a random thread to show the ludicrous behavior of people in some of these threads.

it still hurts because I have been picked on for yrs since my dad was a janitor and not a doc/lawyer...

I thought it would end.....but it never stops....🙁

I hear you J-Dub. growing up my mom and dad were both tailors, and my Dad worked a second job as a server in a banquet. we had some hard times but we made through it
