Janitor Vs. DO. HELP ME CHOOSE!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I hear you J-Dub. growing up my mom and dad were both tailors, and my Dad worked a second job as a server in a banquet. we had some hard times but we made through it

I hope you two are joking and not really having a pity-party over here. I'm nothing but proud that my immigrant parents have a decent life in America because they worked multiple jobs (dad: factory and construction, mom: cleaning houses and in hospitals). Yea, we had rough times, but we never had to live in a van down by the river.

If someone made fun of you for it, it was probably back in elementary school or by really ignorant people. Honestly, get over it. 😎

Its not easy to become a janitor , the last time i heard, the average stats for those that get accepted into the janitor program are:

MCAT -- 38 , thats if you apply early too (anything below 37, kiss your chances good bye)

GPA (in janitor courses)--3.97 (anything below 3.84, FORGET IT --u wont meet the cutoff)

Volunteer work: extensive janitor shadowing and working after hours on holidays.

Program: 7 year program (no summer off)- just learning to clean Sh***tt

You need Letters of Recommendations from three janitors with 40 years experience in the job...People travel across the country to F***king find these people. From what i heard there are only 5 left. The rest retired.

Its tuff, but it can be done.:luck:

It's actually the JCAT and its sub-sections are toilet bowls, urinals, and hallways (with a written section on how to properly organize a closet full of cleaners and mops)

And it's not GPA, but SQFT -- how many square feet you can mop in one hour. A great number is 1,000. Cut off is about 650.

Make sure to get both middle-school and non-middle-school volunteering hours and try to sanitize as many varieties of porcelin pots as possible.

The LOR advice was good but I was unable to find a janitor with that many years. Good thing the AAJC provided me with some good recommendations of top ranking janitors in my area (while shadowing them here in Minnesota I gained alot of respect for the melted snow and salt residue removal specialty that only exists in cold-weather states). If you decide to go into this specialty they will pay off upwards of 20% of your debt each year you work there, plus you have the benefits of using the state-of-the-art floor buffer/waxer combos on a daily basis.

Also you can knock off a year of school by enrolling in an accelerated 5 year program, which results with a custodian/janitorial double major and the original J.D. (Doctoris Janitorius), giving you the ability to practice internationally as well (that is if you can grasp the concept of toilet bowl water flushing in the opposite direction - common question for interviews)

All in all, it's a very competitive field and only selects the cream of the crap, so only apply if you're an over-qualified DO applicant.

No joking...just pain!!

You don't want to have to go around explaining to all your patients what a DO is, so definitely janitor.

it still hurts because I have been picked on for yrs since my dad was a janitor and not a doc/lawyer...

I thought it would end.....but it never stops....🙁

Well no one was picking on you this time. So relax. Its just to show the ludicrousness of premeds with their dilemma of DO or not or what not.

This is definitely not the same thing. And honestly, I can tell you from experience, I would rather have a janitor dad who was a good parent then a doctor parent or lawyer parent who was rich but had produced shallow, unfeeling children or children who did not know maturity when they grew up. There are a lot worse things then to be a janitor's child.

Ohio school receives 700 applications for janitor's job

Barry Mason, business director at Perry Local schools with a stack of over 500 applications for a janitorial position with the schools.

How hungry are people for work in today's sinking economy?

Nearly 700 people have applied for a single job as a school custodian.

Perry Local Schools have an open position — full time with benefits — at Edison Junior High School after its afternoon janitor retired. It pays $15 to $16 an hour.

The job opened last Saturday, and district officials say the stack of applications continues to expand daily.

So much so, the deadline to apply for the position was moved from yesterday to 3:30 p.m. Monday to give potential hires more time.

Many of those who have applied say they lost their previous job due to budget cutbacks by their former employer.

"A lot of people have their stories when they come in. It's heart-wrenching," said Superintendent John Richard.

HOPE?

Dane Steed, 51, forged blades at Heinemann Saw Co. in Canton for nearly four years until last month.

He and several co-workers were let go because of a lack of work available. He put his name in the mix for Perry custodian post.

"Times are bad," the Plain Township man said.

Steed said he has previous custodial experience at a school district and hopes he can retire at Edison.

"I don't want to be doing this again," Steed said.

Donna Croston, 49, of Plain Township, spent nine years on the assembly line at the Hoover Co. in North Canton before it closed last winter.

Prior to Hoover, she lost another factory job because the plant shut down.

For her, the custodial position at Edison represents more than a paycheck.

"There's a lot of people out there like me that are looking for stability," Croston said Friday.

Her two brothers are custodians for North Canton schools.

"They all love their jobs. They've never been laid off," Croston said.

ONLY ONE

The growing pile of applications will be narrowed.

"This is like a needle in the haystack, but I might get lucky," Croston said.

Barry Mason, business manager for Perry Local schools, said he will narrow the field to 30 to 50 applicants for an interview.

Among the qualities that he'll consider for the next custodian, he said, include:

• Enjoys student interaction, even if the position is for after-school hours. So if you don't like children, your chances are slim.

• Plans to stay in the position for long time. An applicant who sees this position as a short-term solution until the economy improves could be out.

"We are looking for someone who will make a career of it and be with us for a long time," Mason said.

This is not the Onion.

4 years of college, and I make a few bucks more an hour than a janitor :annoyed: I really want med school to start, like NOW!

Just watch out for the government... They are trying to pass reform on Access to Janitorial Services! No word as of yet is it is going to impact custodial services!

This is obviously a tough decision, and unfortunately there is no one here who can decide what is best but yourself. Make sure you do some real soul searching though. One thing to consider is that being a janitor is not as glamorous as it used to be. Sure, there are still some perks (ie. you can look up women's skirts as they walk up the stairs as you please). That said, if you become a janitor for the wrong reasons....you will be MISERABLE! There is a lot of crap they have to put up with that the general public has no idea about. People on the outside can look at a janitor and think they have it made, but its not always as glamorous as it seems. What you see janitors doing on TV is not really an accurate representation of the profession.

Bottom line: If there is NOTHING ELSE in this world you can see yourself doing, than fine....become a janitor. Otherwise, I would just become a DO...

To all of you haters...my father is a master of the custodial arts, just like his father before him,and I am deeply offended by your posts.

For those of you who think your **** doesn't stink, my daddy knows otherwise - firsthand. (mostly right hand)

His name might not be Picasso, but he's no less an artist...just a slightly different medium...and someone always messes up his canvas.

😉

I think you should specialize. I am currently shadowing a Custodian in the E.R. (I know! a Custodian who specialized, OMG!!) anyway, he loves his job, except for those frequent code Brown's and those Tech's/CNA's that Forget the Urinals and neglect to tell you about spills and you have to flip over the room in 2 minutes to bring in the next patient.

It doesn't count unless it's down by the river.

Lets put it this way...

My next door neighbor is a barn, my "house" is between 2 creeks on either side and a massive ditch on another, forming a triangle, and I'm only 14 miles away from a river. I wish I was kidding lol

This must be why Obama is looking to their insurance reimbursements.

🤣

Well see, kids? Go become a janitor, UNLESS YA WANNA LIVE IN A TRAILER, DOWN BY THE CREEKS. 😉

In all seriousness, I hope you'll find somewhere more comfortable soon!

Epic thread resurrection!

So does anyone know about the 5 states that require you to take electives in Windex before you can practice? Is there a way to avoid spending an extra year in GJE before being allowed to practice in those five states?

It was best said by the maid on Family Guy: "Nooo, we need more Windex."

Oh no, you just apply for Resolution 42 We don't need no Windex, which is typically granted. As long as some of your rotations allowed you to work with Windex.

I consider the generic stuff as good as Windex, an I have had a lot of experience with that. I think that the AJA (American Janitorial Association) and the LCCE (Liason Committe on Custodial Education)should be put under one roof to run all of the Custodial/janitorial sciences. The boards should be combined to put AJA students on the same plane as LCCE students (obviously adding an extra Windex section for AJA students).

 I couldn't help it!

Windex is only for those who want to specialize in derm. Like in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the father suggests putting Windex on skin to cure all ailments.

A traditional Internship with training in Windex is required by those 5 states no matter what you want to practice, though it's primary use is in Janitorial Dermatology.

Was it one of those less-than-putrid code browns, or one that brings tears to your eyes (You know, the really bad ones that melt your nose hairs)? There are some smells that even Vick's Vaporub can't mask!

I hate when the ones that smell like baby Sh!! sneak up on me, I get worried I have some sort of Benjamin Button disease going on.

I work at a medical school as a janitor even though I feel like I'm smarter than most of the people that go there. Sometimes I see a slide in a pathology lab and I'll just make a diagnosis and my best friend is ben affleck.

Do you have a NE accent perhaps?

@MLT2MT2DO: Only one statement comes to mind: Cup of Soup, the mobile equivalent of the "dutch oven" (look it up on urban dictionary if you don't get it).

:meanie:

Umm yeah, the master of custodial arts is old news. You obviously are not aware of the Doctorate of Janitorial Science. The DJS is one of the most respected academic/janitorial achievements, but it takes many years, like 20 years to get.

This thread just confirmed that pre-DOs/DO students have more fun than pre-MD/MD students 😀

I am pre-MD and I AGREE! Ya'll are making me wish I was going DO! Most epic, hilarious thread on SDN EVER.

I hope I work with many of you one day!

To really understand this issue I think we need expert advice from a Poopologist... if only we could find one to enlighten us... 🙄

sounds good, well see each other in the nurses office as you pick your kid up from school, and I'm cleaning up the code brown in the nurses restroom toilet & tank, floor, and possible ceilings
