PhD/PsyD Just a thread to post the weirdest/whackiest/dumbest mental health-related stuff you come across in the (social) media...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Bro I don't even know any more. I've just seen people online saying they are doing it:

When I actually looked it up months ago I believe it had something to do with attributing psychological distress to your Chakras being messed up. It's New Age stuff.

I checked out this link and this is horrific.

This grinds my gears. Was posted in a FB group where therapists ask for referrals, etc. This was a reply to asking for a referral.

"I am not a licensed mental health provider, but I am certified as a trauma and complex trauma coach with extensive education in neuroscience. I've work alongside therapist and psychiatrist for patient care. I can work worldwide virtually."

"Extensive education." I'm sure. Seems so dangerous to have someone unlicensed muck around with such a vulnerable group.

Looks like a good thing to send to the board/state HHS to report for practicing without a license.

IIRC, the ICD-11 criteria for C-PTSD also requires meeting criteria for PTSD, so you would still need Criterion A. It's been a while, though, so correct me if I'm wrong

Edit: Oh dear God:
"Internet definition of trauma is PTSD. Any therapist I’ve seen counts trauma as it happened in the past and you’re still dealing with it"

I have been more firm when people start using PTSD-oriented words for things that are typical responses to bad things happening. If I feel they are likely to push back, I use the ACT lemon exercise (I'm sure other modalities use it) to highlight that sometimes we have role in creating the intensity of our experiences. It's been pretty helpful.

I think this is correct. I need to summon you like Batman to a Reddit thread on BvDK and his damned book, but I've done that to you too much so I will let this one sit. You would be horrified at it, anyway.

I don't know who flingonber in that YouTube thread is, but they are the hero we need. They even cited that study showing that ICD-11 is more restrictive for PTSD!

I just saw the thread and yikes. I'm sad that I didn't get to reply bc it seems like the OP was genuinely trying to get better informed

Just found out Alliant's accredited PsyD has an emphasis area in "integrative psychology."

What a predatory program.

Dang it @WisNeuro, you got the LLM to lock the thread before I finished my post asking it if they (it?) completed the required 10,000 hours of personal psychotherapy in order to be licensed and the mandatory ayahuasca retreat.

Wait, was that really a bot? I had zero idea.

This keeps happening. I need the equivalent of that tortoise question from Blade Runner.

"What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?"

I mean, we cannot be 100% sure it was a bot. However, the cadence and length of the responses along with the unwavering positive intent makes me think so. Or that guy is the most well-trained tech support specialist ever.

Whether it was a bot or not, the responses were word-for-word AI generative.

Yeah, I had just figured it was a person using AI.

I was pretty sure it was a marketing thing, and they were about to use another bot to support the program.

Yeah, it made me wonder if they were maybe someone using AI because of lack of confidence in their English ability. (I've seen people do that when communicating in their non-native languages).

Idk if a bot or not, but I 100% agree that the content was AI-generated. That was some “holy ChatGPT!” stuff.

I just found out that Lilienfeld’s longtime friend and collaborator (and fellow combatant against pseudoscience) Steve Lynn of Binghamton passed away relatively recently. Another giant has departed.

He was a very nice guy as well and pretty active right until the end. Not sure if he had any current students in his lab though. Hopefully, they all got placed if there were any.

I never met him but he's been an inspiration to me for years. Glad to know he was a nice guy! That is sometimes missing among prolific academics.

There's a thread on ABA causing PTSD and I got downvoted for pointing out what garbage that one study is.

We need someone to write an actual paper on why The Body Keeps the Score sucks. I appreciate Scheeringa's work, but 1) it's a book, not a paper that I can just link and 2) I feel like his politics make him come across as less credible

Y'all want to instantly become the most hated figures to poorly educated midlevels across the nation?
This is exactly what went through my head when I posted that lol

I think McNally wrote a paper on this topic but it was short and not in-depth enough to convince TBKtS lovers that it was accurate. Let me see if I can find it...

Note I said "someone" and not "me" for that reason. Also, like, I'm not sure "we need to educate people on Reddit" is the best rationale for a paper being a good fit for a journal.

Yeah, but it should be a good enough rationale 🤣

To be fair, if most journals got half the circulation of most reddit posts, they would be jumping for joy.

Getting caught up on what seems to be a great thread so I apologize for zombie-ing some old posts!

Has anyone ever interacted with “intake coordinators” or is one?
Me, I was one! I did intake assessments (BPS, screeners) for several levels of care (inpatient psych, RTC, PHP) and would also complete the admission process (signing consents, etc). Definitely did not carry a caseload. If it’s remote then you’re likely only being hired for the assessments. I honestly loved it, it was just a job where I got to ask questions and exercise diagnostic skills.

What a predatory program.
Fun fact I actually enrolled in this program to prove a point to someone about how ****ty the coursework was (dropped before I had to pay tuition), AMA.

What's the bet you'd put on that person having used ChatGPT? (Or being a recruiter for the program?)

More on topic, any DID thread on the therapists subreddit always makes me see red and sigh in frustration 😔

“ If your client wants to come into session and (possibly) lie about their symptoms, that is all part of their psychology—And THEIR responsibility to manage/figure out. Not yours 💪🏾💜”

Sir, what?

ChatGPT for sure. I would have said recruiter based on the exaggerated language about the quality of the program, but more than likely it’s just the poster trying to convince themselves they didn’t **** up :’)

One day I think it will finally be recognized that DID is severe BPD with high trait DP/DR sx and a healthy heap of sociocognitive (and iatrogenic) pressures.

However the “trauma-informed” clinicians out there will probably resist that conclusion kicking and screaming

One of my favorite things that I used to do to stir **** up was whenever I heard someone say "trauma informed" I stopped the conversation and got real curious about what, exactly, they meant by that and were going to do differently in whatever they were doing while being in "trauma informed" mode as compared to not.
