Just because I've been sitting on my A$$ all day in the ICU, I'm just wondering. When the days get long, you've been standing in the cardiac room covering surgical mistakes, what shoes do you wear? And what do you rock when you're out and about?

Surprisingly comfortable.

In house = Dansko's. I even work out in the things. I don't own a pair of gym shoes.

Out n' about = Boss, Mark Nason, Donald J. Pliner.

Dansko's in the OR (or anywhere else in the hospital for that matter)

Outside of the hospital it's usually Steve Madden if I'm going casual, or Asics/New Balance/Nike if I'm working out.

In the OR, I prefer a good pair of running shoes but I also have a pair of crocs in my office.

Out and About
Winter, the 32 Boa snowboarding boots
Summer, a good pair of Sidi's

Danskos are the biggest scam ever.

HArd heels when u stand all day
Roll your ankle when you walk
Cant run to a code
only wear mine as my winter slip on before i put on my backcountry boots

I use running shoes for everything: work, hiking, running.

Scarpa F1s for ski touring

Sidis kick derriere too

Y'all wearing sidi road or mountain shoes? I have to say the specialized shoes w/ the ratchet are nice. Mine haven't gotten too much mileage since I started school though...

I generally wear Merrell's while at work. How are you liking the Croc RX? Cardiac is definitely hard on the feet and I was thinking about a pair. I absolutely hated dansko's. They about killed my feet and ankles.

Seriously, Crocs? Nobody that wears Crocs is a friend of mine. Those things are nasty.

In - NB or Saucony.. support comes first. Comfort second.
Out - NB or Saucony... because when I'm out I'm either running or running to go swim or bike.

I love the crocs Rx - the ones designed for plantar fascitis. They are ugly as sin and never under ANY circumstances would I wear them outside the hospital, but they've been very good to me. Just need to break em' in a little

These are what I wear...

... and somtimes when I have to be in the OR really early, I leave my robe on too.

I bought my first pair of Birkenstok Bostons in 1992, way before they became teeny-bopper fashionwear. That first pair is now on its third resole (only $30). The uppers are a little beat up, and they're now my weekend shoes and wear-to-work shoes.

Once at the hospital I change into a newer pair of Bostons which I've had since 2003. Still have the original sole, although I always wear shoe covers which reduces wear and tear on the sole. I can be on my feet all day and my legs still feel good at the end of the day.

Only drawback: you can't walk backwards in these things - they're dangerous that way, and you can easily come out of them such as when backing a heavy ICU bed around a corner.

I wear worn out running shoes in the OR.

Otherwise, I try to wear these as often as possible...

I rock the Danskos 100% of the time in the hospital and about 50% of time out side the hospital...

As far as not being able to run to a code...I posted a 4.5 40yard time and 36inch vert in mine.

Seriously, I have the same pair of crappy-a$$ Thom McCann's with Dr. Scholl's inserts anti-slip black slip-ons I bought at KMart the first week of residency. These things cost me like $25 and have saved my butt numerous times when stepping in a puddle. And, they're comfortable as hell.

So, if you're paying more than $30 for a pair of shoes that will get blood, body parts, and piss on them and that you can never wear outside the hospital, you're a fool. But, that's just one dude's obnoxious opinion.

I hit up the dansko factory outlet when I'm back in PA... $60/pair.

Clearly they're not for everyone but I can honestly say at the end of 30 hour running around intern crappy call (and internal medicine rounding) my feet have NEVER hurt. It amazes me.

I wear the Z-coil shoes in the hospital. You have to be confident in your masculinity to sport 'em, but the cushioning differences between these, Danskos, Crocs, etc. is undeniable.
