Well, that is quite an exam. I am not expecting to score extremely high on it, but I would be very surprised if I don't pass. I had heard so much about increased failures rates, attorneys, audits, etc, etc, I must admit that I was a little surprised that it wasn't alot worse. Don't get me wrong, it was dang hard, but it seemed like at least 50% of the questions were extremely straight forward and very easy. Dental decks seemed to really be money on this exam. It almost seems like the test writers sit down with a set of decks to write the questions. Those little details on the back of the cards were 85-90% of the exam exactly. If you understand those decks very well, I don't see how a person could fail that thing.

I felt that there were some good and bad things going on with part 2. The good thing is each question on the first day has only four answers to choose from. Usually it is really easy to narrow it to 2 of the choices. Also most of my questions were very short and to the point. Not alot of k-type, really long and wordy questions, which makes it go alot faster. The time they give is more than enough. Even though radiographs and pictures are not crystal clear, I felt like the questions they asked showed what you needed to see.

Now for a few bad things. The grammer and spelling are terrible. Examples: offlusal instead of occlusal, carcinogenic instead of cariogenic, wrong missing teeth on cart, history says poor oral hygiene, and then in the question it states,"because pt has good oral hygiene which...? I can't believe that as much as this exam means to us takers, they can't even proofread the thing. I felt like day one was more exhausting (400 questions) but the questions on day 2 were a bit more challenging. Good luck to all who are preparing. Don't psych yourself out too much. Hard:yes, Unfair:don't think so....yet.

For you first time test takers....during the component B portion of the exam (cases) be sure that you see all of the photos and radiographs for each case. I didn't find out untill I was on #80 that there were tabs at the top of the window that say (1 of 2) and (2 of 2). The tutorial does not point this out and it is easy to not notice this. I was pretty confused on several occasions before I figured this out. (example: question asked about the appearence of incisal edge #23-26 and I didn't even have a picture on mand. anteriors. It was on tab #2) Luckily I had plenty of time to go back and look at the other radiographs/pictures. After sleeping on it last night I still feel the same way. Know your decks well and have attended your dental school lecutures, and you are going to be just fine!

Actually great point. That same thing happened to me as well when I took my exam the first time where I was being asked a ? where a ceph xray would have been very useful and it wasn't available. It was until I got to the 90th ? or so that I realized that there were more than 1 tab in some of the cases. When I went back to the ? in which a cephalo was useful ALAS, there was tab 2 w/a ceph pic!! Some cases have more than one tab for pictures OR/AND x-rays. Yes, beware!!

What year of the dental decks did you study from?

Thanks

Atrophine - I would suggest to study from the latest decks. i noticed that from the older set to the newest set there were changes/additions/improvements and corrections. That's my suggestion since I studied from both and noticed quite a few things were different/better in the newest set. Good luck!

I agree. I studied from the latest edition. There is still some outdated stuff. Lots of gold foil, old cements, bevel gingival margin of class II SA, etc. but as I said earlier, dental decks are money! If all you do is go through and answer each question on decks, you won't learn much. The real value of those are the little details that are bolded and boxed on the back. Many questions were almost word for word.

Thanks for your reply odontologia & Gone Fishin.

I have the 2007-2008 . This is the latest version right? Cuz i see from their website, the 2011-2012 won't come out 'til August of 2010.

hey everyone i just took my test Monday and tuesday.. i found the first part very straightforward and not as difficult as i expected... second day is a little more challenging for me..its tiring having to stare at xrays/pictures/charting...and all that...we'll see how what happened in 3 weeks!! ahhh! -_-

Tinboy, Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think anyone on this thread has done this. The exam guide is pretty clear on what we can and cannot divulge.

I took my exam on 22 and 23 as well. Did you hear back yet for your results?

My exam was easy, thanks to many of my friends who gave me tons of detailed feedback. A lot of things on their exam came up on mine, I would say at least a 1/4. My day 2 was lot easier, because my school did a good job in treatment planing and differential diagnosis. Overall, I would say the exam is doable, but don't expect anyone can pass this exam. I studied on-and-off for about a month, went through decks once, 2 old exams (91 and 93 had repeats), the reast was fair play, or there is no way you could study for about 5-10% of the questions.

I will post my scores as sooon as I get them. Today is day 13 since I took it, so the results are probably in the mail by now. 🙂

congratulation for all
but can you tell us the materials that you have studied with.and what do you recommend?

O.K. folks, looks like I will be retaking the dern thing. Just kidding! Got my scores yesterday and landed about where I expected. Not outstanding but perty decent. 421 correct out of 500 for a composite score of 87. I got 82 out of 100 on the case based, and was well above national mean in all sections. Still no failures that I am aware of here at Creighton.

I still feel that the dental decks are the most effective method of studiing. I also thought that Mosby's had real good stuff in Pedo, endo, pt mngt, and Pharm. Weaker in Op and surg. (Selling my Mosby's, see classifieds)I didn't study near as hard for this as Part 1, and I guess my score kind of reflects that. Best of luck to you all.

well done!congratulations!!

Took the exam 2/16-2/17, just got my results yesterday.

371/500 Raw, 81/100 Case Based, Within 1 of national average in all sections (above in all but 2)

79 Composite Score !!!

Hallelujah

Got my scores back 373/ and 72 on case-based gave me an 80 comp score.
I would agree with "gone fishin" even if he is a farm boy, about what to study. I studied dental dex all but pharm and osha. In mosby's I studied pharm and ppt management. I went through most of one old exam I think it was 93.

My advice -- study old exams! I got a 90 on part II and thought over 50% of the test was directly related to old test questions (and a lot were actually repeats).
Can you please tell us which old exams did you go thru( ASDA, released ada...) and what were you other study materials?

Thanks a ton...
