K-State C/O 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Actually, my impression from the letter they sent was that the school is offering a vaccination clinic in the fall after we get there.

We can get it before we get school, but you are responsible for lining it up with your doctor. Either way, you need to let the school know what you are planning on doing by July 1. Of course it's too late to get all the shots by July 1 at this point, but I called, and we can put projected dates for receiving the vaccinations.

Check with your health insurance to see if they'll cover it. I know most won't, but I checked just in case, and they'll cover mine if I get it from my doctor, but not from the school's clinic. I just have to pay $35 co-pay for each shot, which is still WAY better than paying full price.

That was the impression I got as well. I know that at least in TX, most doctors are still having trouble finding the vaccine. You can start with your state's passport health services- they were able to get mine for me in a very timely fashion.

Really?? Wow!! You guys are lucky you don't have to coordinate the mess yourselves. To my knowledge, this is the first time the school will be holding a vaccination clinic--wonder if it's because of the vaccine shortage? Hmmm...very interesting! Good to know! 🙂

HI all - just wanted to know if Kimball Ave where it intersects with Anderson is too far from campus to live? I'll have a car, but didn't know if its too out of the way.

What about Kimball Ave North West of Hwy 113 area?

I know where Kimball and Anderson intersect. No, it's an easy drive. Wouldn't want to walk that - but you could possibly bike it if you're really into biking.

Mmm... don't know about Hwy 113-- OH, if that's Seth Child, that's also not a bad drive either. Definitely still puts you easily within the 15-20 minute maximum for fourth year, and, it's probably a 10 minute drive I would guess.

So, since CookieBear mentioned bikes, I was wondering how bike friendly Manhattan is. I've been "training" myself to ride a bike again with the intention of riding to school whenever possible next year.

Also, I assume that it won't be possible to ride my bike every day, but I don't want to buy a parking permit if I'm not driving to school all the time. How often does the weather permit biking to school? And if I didn't buy a parking pass, is there somewhere nearby that I can legally park for free?

There's nothing around the school that's non-campus parking unfortunately, so permits are a must. The parking services people are pretty inconsistent/random about ticketing (and never in your favor), and tickets can range from 10$-150$, though they're normally about 50$. Their website mentions a temporary, month permit that's about 30$, but I've never used it.

And you'll have to register your bike with Parking Services, but I don't think that costs.

Here's Parking Services' website: https://www.ksu.edu/parking.

i got my financial aid info last week and i was just curious to how much everyone was going to take out and when you were going to accept the awards...i really want to wait til i get a bill so i just don't take out too much money. i e-mailed financial aid and they said as long as i do it 2 weeks before aug 14 i should be good... just curious what everyone else is doing?

I'll be playing it by ear. You don't have to accept every penny they offer- you can always just take part of any given loan. Unfortunately for me, after crunching numbers, I'll likely be taking most of it. (ouch).

And while on the topic of money...how much of a jerk does it brand me if I don't use KVESS? I've compared prices, and it's way cheaper to buy online... I know the $ goes back to the vets, but I'm on a budget 😳. A $100-150 savings is a couple trips to the grocery store...

Don't feel bad, I don't use KVESS for most of my books, a lot of my class gets them online or from upperclassmen. I don't buy all the books, and the ones I do buy I get much cheaper from half.com or amazon.com. I did buy my stethoscope and dissection tools and a couple other things from KVESS, so that makes me feel a little better.

hey does anyone know which is better or is there a big difference between the illustrated medical dictionary and the comprehensive veterinary dictionary. Also, between Miller's anatomy of the dog and textbook of veterinary anatomy. Is it necessary to get both, sets of both books or are they similiar enough to only get one?
Also, anyone know how they measure the lab coats?
Thanks for the help!

I was gonna ask about the lab coat size too? i have no idea what size i am. can we try them on there when we pick stuff up?

Re: labcoats, you can try them on at KVESS. Remember to get a size that will also fit over sweaters, etc in the winter.

IMHO, you definitely need "little Miller's" (the dissection guide) and any other anatomy texts are optional. I bought big Miller's and Dyce/Sack/Wensing and didn't use either of them the entire year (and got A's both semesters).

As far as the medical dictionaries--you can flip through the pages of each in KVESS to see which might work better with your learning/reference style.

Very exciting!!!!!!! 🙂 😍

Its basically just a medical dictionary vs. a veterinary dictionary, so its up to you to decide what you would rather have....I got both and don't use them much, but I like to think they look impressive sitting on my bookshelf...
Miller's is dog anatomy only, while dyce's textbook of veterinary anatomy is cow/horse/pig/chicken, so they aren't the same thing. I used mine both only a handful of times, but depending on your learning style/anatomy background you might use them more
Defintely buy the dissection guide though-you'll use it everyday!

does anyone know if the elective that is offered in the spring for neurology the only neuro class that we will be offered or will they be a mandatory class?

i was just curious if anyone has bought the cell bio book and if you think it helped? it is not required so just wondering if i should get it.

Short answer right now-no. (unless while implementing the new curriculum over the next few years they decide to add one).

Basic neuro is going to be incorporated into Gross Anatomy I and II, and you will learn about neurological diseases in Medicine classes 2nd/3rd year, but this is the only stricty neuroscience class. So if that is an interest of yours, or you are pretty interested in small animal neuology/surgery, you might want to look into it.

I found it a challenging but very interesting class.

I don't recall many people that had or used the cell bio book. The Cunningham physiology book (can't remem if it's on the I term or II term booklist) - but that's a good book. Many of us like that book alot.

For the cell bio stuff, our notes were usually fine - and anything else I googled.

I think I had an older edition of the cell bio book, and I think I sold it. I don't think I ever used it -- or, if I did open it, I couldn't/didn't find what I wanted in it anyway.

thanks everyone for the help!

I have a few random things:

1) Has anyone arranged for health insurance? Any suggestions for those of us that are too old to be on our parents health plan?

2) Just wanted to make a suggestion to those of you that still require the pre-exposure rabies vaccine. I called my local health department and they offer the vaccines for $154 each (total $460). The vet school will have them for a total cost up to $740. I saved $280 doing it locally and got my first shot this morning. Ouch 🙂

3) If anyone is still looking for a place let me know. So far it's me, another girl from our class and we are looking for a third in a 3/2. It's an awesome house 6 minutes from the vet school.

Thanks 🙂

so i have been looking through all of the posts and im kind of confused as to which books i actually NEED to buy. so if anyone can clear it up here is the list of required books that we got from KVESS:
Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary
Guide to the Dissection of the Dog
Miller's Anatomy of the Dog
Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy
diRiore's Atlas of Histology
Dissection Kit
Lab Coat
Exam Gloves

I was trying to accept my student loans online and they ask how many credits we are taking each semester. Does anyone know exactly how many credits this year for fall and spring? I saw that K-state has the curriculum on the website but I was not sure with the new electives that we are being offered if the credits are going to be changed at all.

I initially had it as 18 but I calculated the raw hour-age and I changed it after getting the elective information. The fall semester comes out to 21 credit hours all together with the electives and integration course. Spring will still be 22.

Now, if they would actually get us enrolled so I can see which electives I got put into...

Hmm, I actually got 19 credits for the Fall when calculating it, using the numbers of credits listed in the course catalog on iSIS. Based on that, I estimated 21 for the Spring.

Well, here's what I did.

Base number from KSUCVM website from last year's curriculum: 18
Embryology is now an elective: -1
They added Cross-Course Integration: +1
Elective classes: +3
Total: 21

Of course, I could be (and probably am) totally wrong.

For the spring, we're just swapping required neurology for 2 hours of electives, keeping it at 22 hours. So far. They might have changed it up. They seem to enjoy doing that...

Without checking, I believe SmallandLarge is right.

At the bare minimum you should get the Guide to Dissection of the Dog, lab coat and gloves, dissection kit, some sort of medical/veterinary dictionary, and the histology atlas. Anymore is up to you.

You can sign up for AVMA student health insurance the first week of classes/as soon as you join SCAVMA and pay your dues.

Oh ok, the credit numbers listed are different! In iSIS, Anatomy/Histology/Physiology are listed as 5 credits each, while last year's course schedule on the CVM page gives different numbers.

I guess we'll find out when we get enrolled. I keep checking... I'm anxious/excited/curious to see what electives I'm in! 😛

Huh, they did change it...weird. Probably to lull us into a false sense of security...

I keep checking on my enrollment status too. I bet they're waiting until they get the preferences from the students they interviewed/accepted on Friday and the one they'll interview and accept soonish. They have to have it done by July 15th so the controller's office can bill us, so it should be done by then.

I feel bad because I marked the etomology class but...I would really enjoy having Friday afternoons free...

Also, is anyone else trying to figure out who their lab partners will be? I keep trying to but the roster keeps changing!

How do we know who our lab partners will be? Fun! I love looking at the composite to see all my future classmates 😀

Also, my boyfriend is planning trips around football games - does anyone know how we can get tickets, or if they are super hard to get??

Thanks!

Anatomy groups are 4 people (I think), so I've just been counting "1,2,3,4...1,2,3,4" until I fall into a group.

I don't know how easily obtained tickets are going to be for us since we're going to be enrolled so late (ugrad freshmen enrolled last week and were able to buy tickets), but you can generally find listings on Facebook selling tickets pretty cheap, except for the KSU/KU games which fetch a pretty penny. You do have to have a K-State ID for student entry, but generally they look the other way if it resembles the person somewhat.

To order them after we're enrolled, it's just in the Marketplace on iSIS under 'Athletic Tickets'. I don't remember if they did away with football only and are forcing everyone to get football/basketball combos now though.

Wow, haven't been on here in a while. Congrats to all who got in!!

Just FYI, some lab groups are 5 people, so that might throw you off a bit if you are trying to figure out your lab mateys. You do get to choose your lab group for 2nd year though. 🙂

Wow, it's great that they're offering such a large variety of electives!

Personally, I'd take the literature class and the 3-D imaging class, but that's just me. 🙂 Thanks for posting it!

Just to reassure you, you won't have an exam your first Friday--it'll be the end of the second week of class. And it'll be on all of the bones--and there will be a party that night for the whole school hosted by the class of 2012 and in honor of your very first test in vet school. 🙂

awww, c'mon Allison.. you mean you wouldn't take neuroscience all over again if you could?

Hello everyone!

My name is Robert H and I was just recently accepted off the alternate list a little while ago! I am very excited to being going to KSU. I am from southern CA about 5 minutes away from Disneyland. A second year just sent me a link to this today and told me I should check it out. I feel a little lost being out of school for a year since I graduated in 08.

I did buy some books through Amazon and saved some money there. I do feel out of the loop as far as financial aid because I have no gotten my award yet. When I called they had my social security number wrong and fixed it and I should be getting it soon. Any advice would be great!

I look forward to moving out there and starting school. I will be arriving to my new place August 9th. If anyone else gets there early maybe we can meet up and explore the city before orientation.

One other question, I currently have T-mobile. I wanted to know what people suggest for phone service like mine.

Thanks, Robert.

awww, c'mon Allison.. you mean you wouldn't take neuroscience all over again if you could?

Ohhh we both know neuroscience is completely and totally the #1 priority (and easiest class) in the curriculum...!!

Actually, I recommended it to my roommate and he's taking it. 😉 Hee hee.

haha! I'm sure he'll be thanking you later down the line.. so long as you are providing tutoring help! hehe. 😉

does anyone know what type of stethescopes they sell from KVESS. They had a range on the sheet that we could fill out I forget what the range was, but I wanted to know what the quality was.

 So I love that I'm not the only one trying to de-code the lab partner web... I myself will be throwing a twist in this process- my last name will be changing (post wedding this July) from H to M. If there's more like me, and they keep dropping/changing members, I'm afraid our attempts are futile! So hello everyone, and I can't wait to meet y'all even if it has to be the old-fashioned way = meet on the first day.

And WELCOME new members to KSU CVM C/O 2013!!!!👍

Oh, and another critical question...ok so not so much...Does anyone else have a S.O. coming with them that will be as equally bored to tears by the non-stop critterology we'll be learning as mine?😀

How are you going about figuring out lab partners? I dont think I am added and my last name is H. Its all going to be mixed around im sure. 😕

Is anyone else having housing issues? I am getting so frustrated. It was pretty tough to find a one bedroom apartment that allowed my dog and cat. I sent them my security deposit with my rental application and they cashed it. Then instead of sending me the lease and a cosigner addendum they accidentally sent me just a cosigner addendum. Since then they have said that they have resent the lease to me twice and I have not received it. Since they sent the cosigner addendum I moved to NC from Ohio for the summer so I'm not sure if it's a problem with the mail here or a problem with them. I am starting to feel like they are scamming me and this apartment doesn't really exist or something. The company is called alliance property management. Have any of you heard of them?😕

Im sorry to hear that, I have never heard about them. It took me awhile to find something I liked but I did find housing. Its just a LOT of paperwork I am having to fill out to get in because I think its government assisted living for students like us. Good luck on figuring it all out im sure it will work out. 😀

i had a hard time finding a place that took my dog and cat as well. I finally found an apartment close to the school but it was more expensive than i was planning. the things we do for our animals...
anyway, it was through mccullough development (www.mdiproperties.com)
I have not heard about that other place though. sorry.
i hope it works out for you!

JulieB I just spent a few days in Manhattan looking for places to live and many people highly recommended that I use Alliance Property Management. So they are a real company and I don't think they are scamming you since they were recommended by several different people who had previously used them. Hope this helps!

I couldn't find anything that would take a dog over 30lbs, I'm actually not bringing my pups with me but my husband is in th Guard and if he goes on deployment it would have been nice to be able to take care them myself. Anybody know of a place? I'm starting to fill out university crossing paperwork, but if I could find a place that would take pets I'd be very happy.

Which apartment are you in? I am going to be renting through them too. It's probably not the same though. I know that I'm not right next to campus.

I know that collegiate villa condos/apts. also allow pets under 30 lbs, but haven't found any that allow anything bigger than that. Anyone know if Collegiate Villas is a good place to live?

I have found a gorgeous 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house that I am very interested in renting. It is about two blocks from campus. I have found one roommate, but am looking for one more (male or female). Pets are OK, and I would love to find someone with a dog to keep mine company during the day. The house has a large fenced yard. Rent is in the $450-$500 range, but all the bedrooms have their own office! The owner says utilities averaged between $100-$115 per month last year.

PM me, email me at [email protected] or call me at (203)570-5355 if interested.

FYI for people looking for a place that will allow pets..

I lived at Winston Place Apartments my first year and they let me bring my dog and cat. I understand the frustration of trying to find a place when you have multiple pets! The manager, Pat, is pretty awesome about negotiating pet policy with the tenants. Our next door neighbor had a black lab, and I've seen other multiple tenants that have larger dogs. We rented a 2-bedroom from them and the living room was surprisingly large.

The only downside is that it's not the newest apartment complex in the city. But if you're not uber picky, it does just fine. It's about 2 miles from the school on Kimball, right before Seth Child Rd (113). Rent was reasonable. We paid $625/month for the 2-bedroom.

Here is their phone number if you want to get in contact! Pat is super nice and she'll email you pics of the place if you ask for them. GOOD LUCK! 🙂

Thanks everyone for the advice. I asked the landlord to fax it to me and she sent it no problem so I think the problem might have been with the mail.

FYI, they are letting me have my 40 lb dog and cat. I'm not sure what kind of apartments they have at this point since it isn't a big complex but you can look at www.rent-apm.com.

Thanks for the flight info! I am sure I will be going back and forth to CA a lot when I can.

Anyone else getting really excited for orientation? 😎

I just checked my iSIS page and have been enrolled for the core courses (Anatomy, Microanatomy, Physiology, and Cross Course Integration), but no electives yet.

Perhaps they're waiting for the most recently admitted students' forms to come in?

Either way, pretty exciting!
