K-State c/o 2017 Applicants!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They're already started sending out the first wave of interview invites for IS and OOS. Interviews are typically weekends in late December- January. They send out acceptances/rejections/wait-list status info I believe late Feb-March. They send out emails for interviews and paper copies for the decision stuff.

I'm not sure when I got my invite...I think it was late November but I didn't interview until late January. And I got an answer (acceptance/rejection/waitlist) within a week of my interview. So I think it depends...

So I decided to look up last year's OOS interview invites on here. Here they are: 11/1, 11/14, 11/22, 12/7, 12/13, and 12/22

Seems like everyone is pushing back invite dates.

Just got an OOS Interview Invite, today! January 5th @ 9am. Anyone else?

For anyone interested...I emailed KSU about application/interview status and what we could expect...I got this response...

"We try and notify all applicants of their status before the end of December. However, applicants may still be invited for interviews as late as early January. We appreciate your patience in this matter."

Fingers crossed!!!! :xf::xf:

This makes me feel better :xf:
And, congratulations to everyone that has already received an invite!!

Do you think this has something to do with ranks or last names? I am curious about this.

My guess is rank. My friend with the last name starting with O got her invite weeks ago and I just got mine (last name Jones).

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to share this information...

I emailed Janel to find out the dates interviews are scheduled to take place...

"Interviews are scheduled to take place Dec. 15-16, Jan. 5-6, and Jan. 19-20."

Thanks for posting this! I was starting to freak out because one of my friends got invited for an interview but I haven't heard anything yet. Hopefully I will find out soon!

I assume they choose dates based on rank, priority, and their idea of your desire to attend KSU. Last year (with my awful awful application attempt) my interview was the last weekend, and I absolutely got the impression that our round was lowest priority.

To disprove the last name suggestion further, mine begins with H, my interview is Dec. 16. Can't wait to go back!

Though I'm pumped for my interview, I can't stop wondering why the plane tickets to Manhattan, KS are so expensive!

Because the airport has literally one terminal :meanie:. You can walk in the front door and out the back door in about 12 steps (not kidding). You literally go through "security" on your walk out to your plane. 🙄

Would it be cheaper to fly somewhere else and rent a car?

I wish I could rent a car.

I flew in to KCI/MCI in Kansas City and rented a car. I also stayed at the Motel 6 in town - it has really nice pergo flooring and is across the street from Panera Bread and a steak house and a HyVee.

Anyway, my flight was $270 from LA and then about $45-50 a night for hotel and $100 total for car and gas. The drive to Manhattan is about 2 hours on the interstate.

Good luck everyone!

Usually you have to be 25 to rent a car. Maybe they changed it?

I think you can be 21 now, but you have to put down a deposit or pay more?! 😕

I'm 23 and renting a car to get to ISU. Extra fee but still not too bad. Amount depends on state and rental car company.

I just found out that one of my good friends is getting married on the day of my interview! It's sort of a rushed wedding if you know what I mean, so she didn't have a ton of weekends to chose from. I can make it if I leave right after my interview, but now I don't know what to do about the pizza party? I want to do both, but obviously that's impossible. I also can't shake the feeling that this get together may be a test of our interest in the school...

You don't sign in or anything to the pizza party so they won't know if you aren't there. They basically go through a presentation on a power point, answer questions, and let you eat pizza. It was helpful and I enjoyed what I learned at the presentation, but it is in no way mandatory.

Thanks, I guess I'm just a little nervous about the whole process. I would hate to ruin my chances by committing some sort of admissions faux pas 🙂

How much did you end up paying for the car rental?

I think it was 2 full days (Friday afternoon through sunday afternoon) at $36 a day. You can check National/Alamo's website to see your rate. I had a recharge # at the time for my university which got me the full waiver insurance for no extra charge but the rate should still be similar.

Does anyone know if they are done sending out KState interviews? 🙁

I haven't applied before, but from that e-mail and what others have said they've done in previous years (several waves of interview invites) I don't think they're finished. Both Abney and Emiloo also posted earlier saying that last year they got their interview invites pretty late in December. Makes me nervous that I haven't heard anything from them yet either, but I don't think we're out of luck just yet!

Eh, depends. One of my friends who I interviewed with got in with no problem and I know another kid who was accepted both there and to the Ivy league schools. They both interviewed on that date. I think it was more of "we were the last round and they were tired" sort of deal. I never got the impression that we were low on the totem pole. I think it may also be when they got to your application.

People who have been to the pizza party before: I know I've read around here that it's casual. Like, jeans casual? Or business casual?

Definitely jeans casual. Last year there were some people who wore more biz clothing, but even the parents were pretty casual. Its a pizza party, not a formal dinner so have fun with it. 😀

I am just curious...I applied to Kansas under the encourgment of my boss, the stats for OOS, the fact it has some zoo med, and because I had prereqs (I am missing a full year of biology for a lot of schools 🙁) Anyway, I got an interview and I am super excited but also wondering a little bit more about the town itself. People keep telling me "oh you will be happy anywhere" but 4 years is a long time to "get by" with living somewhere. Its also 18 hours away from "home" so its not like I can run home for a weekend if things get stressful....Anyway, I have a 6 year old son who will be moving with me. I tried to look up school info but other than the county website could not find anything. Does anyone know about the public schools? Also...I looked at the county's website and saw that the town is only about 5% African American...when I looked at the class profile pics I think it was even less diversity 🙁 Are certain neighborhoods more diverse than others or is the town literally completely caucasian? How rural is the town also? Are there malls, movies, parks? I am picturing a tumbleweed (even though I think that is farther west).

I know nothing will satisfy my curiosity or questions except seeing the place but maybe someone on here could just boost up my thoughts on the town before I drop $500 on a plane ticket/hotel for an interview

There is a mall. And a movie theater. Nice chain restaurants, a bar strip near campus. I have no idea about schools. And even if it is not a metropolis, it is a functional city IMHO and is only 2hr from KC, less from KU/Lawrence.

I think I saw you posting about carribean options too. There is more civilization in Manhattan than on Grenada, more options for your mini too. Unless money is a truly limiting factor in your applications... I would give them a chance.

Those of you who have received invites, were you notified by email or by letter? I'm concerned that *if* I get an invite I'll most likely be in the last round, and if it comes by mail I may not get it until I get back from the holidays.

You should get an email.

Thanks. I am for sure going to the interview, and I am very excited. Maybe I will rent a car and spend some time driving around the town..or possibly stay until Monday and see if I can take a look at the public schools.

JoAnna, starting in November, there is in an indoor skating rink in the city park. It is a lot fun. Plus, the entrance fee with the skate rental is $4. (I am not sure if the City of Manhattan has increased the price). It is a bargain if you want to take a break from your studies.
