Are there any current medical schools who could give some budgeting advice during 1st year?

Try and find a place that is less than 1100 or 1200 a month. If you can do below 1K that will help a lot as well. For me, I spend much less ordering online for groceries at amazon because I see my total right away haha. Prepare food for a few days of lunches and also try and just prepare your day completely, if you feel like there's a chance you'll stay at school to study bring lunch. If you're going to go out to sbux to study get an iced coffee or iced tea because you can get free refills as long as you have a starbucks card (load 5 dollars onto a starbucks gift card and register it) and you stay in the store.

If you were under your parents plan for car insurance call that insurance company and see if they gibe student discounts, the fact that your family was using them and if they were using them for a while will deduct a lot on your monthly payment.

If you are fairly healthy, buy a catastrophic health insurance plan which saves you a lot.

If you need to, downgrade your data plan on your phone. You can check snapchat while you're studying at school. 😉

Thanks. amazon groceries?

@AlteredScale & @SynapticDoctah , I'm working on finding a place to live right now. Any opinions on Walnut Tower, The Landings at River Market, or the apartment buildings on Armour Blvd.?

Honestly, I don't really know much about these places as I live south of school in Overland Park. AlteredScale would know more about this.

I hear Overland Park is really nice. Many people I talked to on interview day advised me to consider living there but I decided I would prefer to live in a big city for a change. Thank you for replying.

That's true. OP is really nice and I really like living here. However, I think I want to move next year for two reasons: First, OP is expensive in comparison to other parts of town (however, it is really safe in OP). We pay $1100/month for a 2 br/2bth place. There are places within 10 minutes of us that are the same size for 700-800 a month.

The second reason is just the distance. Takes 25-35 minutes to get to school.

Yeah Walnut Tower would definitely be small but I don't really need too much space. By Armour Blvd I mean over by 33rd and 34th street. The building names are Bellerive, Clyde Manor, Park Central, etc.

Ah then I don't know much about those ones off Armour Blvd 🙁 sorry! I would def suggest walnut tower simply because I love the convenience of going to the City Market to get local produce for a cheap cheap price and because there's a ton of coffee shops in that area to study. Add that with being within minutes of the school and I I do think its a great place to be.

That's my goal. I'm taking a trip to the city in a few weeks and I've got a tour scheduled. Hopefully they'll have something open then. Thank you for your help 😀

Anyone having issues with netpartner? I set up my account and filled everything out the day we received the email about it opening. I just tried to log back in to check something and it says I am an jnvalid user suddenly. Of course this happens after the school is closed for the weekend. :/

They changed the way you log in, try entering your entire student ID ie S0000xxxxx

Congratulations to all on starting this crazy ass ride...I am a 4th year who is about to graduate and matched MD Emergency Medicine. This whole process is long and confusing and quite literally a clusterf*%$k...so whatever questions or advice you need/seek, fire away...enjoy the ride

They made some interesting changes to the dual degree MBA program. Now I think the business classes are all during the summer during the first two years and now you can be at any rotation site and keep up during third year.

Question about financial aid: it said on my FAFSA and now on net partner that my expected student contribution is $7,500. What if I don't have that money? I've worked for two years but I don't make a whole lot of money.

Also to current students....do we fill out the "apply for a PLUS loan" on the government financial aid webpage or do we wait for financial aid to send us some sort of application? The federal page says "Check with your school to see if this is how they want you to request a PLUS Loan." I'd like to get it finished if we are to fill it out.

Just called Financial Aid...if anyone else wonders the same thing....I was told to wait until we receive our packages from financial aid. The credit check run is only good for 3 months...so better to do closer to when money is dispersed so they don't have to run it again.

What's advised if you know you will live cheaper than the estimated amount given? People say to take the whole amount because it is estimated for 10 months and you need money for the other 2 months. Is this the general consensus?

I have about 10k of my own money saved up... don't know what to do with that

I believe they said at accept day that if you don't take the full amount but end up needing more, you can contact financial aid and get more money. I think you can also return money that you don't end up using.

Any thoughts/opinions on internet and cable provider?

My options at my apartment are TWC, AT&T U-verse, and Google Fiber. Prices look comparable, but online reviews said to avoid AT&T. What are current students using?

Thanks. 🙂

I had att and just switched to google fiber. I hate att and so far google fiber is better than att.

Never had twc, so can't comment on them.

I would avoid ATT if possible, I had them back home last year and it was awful. TWC also has a student discount (at least they do at CT) and I haven't had any issues with them so far though I'm sure others have. Google Fiber is supposed to be really good if you have high speeds but I have no idea how their price ranges compare for equal speeds. I have 50Mbps from TWC on four devices and it's been great. 🙂

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll see who can give me the better deal (hoping for a student discount)!

I just wanna move down there now. Haha.

I have had both google fiber and TWC. I would go with fiber even if more expensive. The transfer rate is wel worth the little extra you may pay. TWC has too many drops and outages to pay what they are asking for their speeds. The 1 gigabit/s speed fiber is golden!

How good is the wi-fi in the CT study lounge?

It's useful when you need it but I wouldn't rely on it. We had a lot of problems at the beginning of the year until they replaced the router and now I get it 90% I'm down there. And if it's ever not working, there is a way to reset it, just make sure you let people know you're doing it 🙂

There are also two desktop computers down here and a printer that you just need to supply paper for. Again, useful, but don't rely on it - sometimes the printer is out of ink (but there's also printers on campus you can pay for). Hope that helps!

Google Fiber is the front runner in Internet service. They provide 1 GB (aka 1,000 MB) per second speed for about $70 per month. They also provide you with a free rental Modem/Router with dual band wireless (2.4 gHZ and 5.0 gHZ)

For me, there is no question as to what my internet service provider will be!

Does anyone know when we should expect to receive our loan disbursement?

Does anyone know when we should expect to receive our loan disbursement?
From the information I received at Accepted Student's Day, they said starting around late April.

Would the funds be direct deposited so soon? I know that in the most recent email regarding netpartner it was stated that "award letter notifications should arrive in mid-late April" but would we have access to the funds right away?

That, I do not know. The best bet would be to call and ask the financial aid department themselves.

I thought they said we'd be notified how much we'd be getting late April, and loan disbursement was closer to orientation, but I'm not 100% sure!

That sounds right to me, since they said the first bills would be arriving in July. I guess we just to have to wait and see.

Yeah that sounds about right. I'm just curious how soon we'll get the actual funds since I imagine that my first rent payment will be due by July 1st.

You won't get any money deposited into your account until at least 3-4 weeks after school start. So plan on a different source to cover the first month expenses (if possible I would even plan at least 6 weeks worth, so if your rent is due on the first of the following month, it will be smart to plan on covering that as well). The last thing you need when you are trying to adapt to school is to worry about what you going to eat or how you will pay your bills. Your aid can't be released until you have started school, school can't tell the feds you've started until the end of orientation add to that time to process "paperwork " and 3 weeks have gone by already

Ouch, that's not what I wanted to hear. Thanks for letting me know. I don't really know what I'm going to do but at least I have some time to start thinking about it.

I believe at century towers, they'll let you wait until you get your disbursement to pay rent. You could contact wherever you're going to be living and see if they'll let you do that.

Yep, best case scenario you'll get loan refunds at the end of orientation week like some people did last year, but that didn't happen for everyone and seemed to be an aberration as it's usually 2+ weeks later.

Thanks, I'll definitely see if that is an option.

Are we supposed to get drug screens before school or will that be done when we get to school? I haven't seen anything about it. All my friends who are going to other medical schools have been going to get their drug screens done before school so I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything!

Hey everyone!

I'm a current first year looking for a roommate. I currently live in CT in a 2 bedroom apartment. Let me know if anyone is interested!

So I saw the bookstore say that it is closing this summer. In their Facebook post, they said thanks for the last ten years. What is that about?

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile app

They are opening a new one. Different concept. From what I read, I think it will be better for students. Plus book purchased will now be offered online they are trying to find a partner that will match Amazon price or at least close to it. Same thing for medical equipment. Looks very promising!
