Question for those currently in CT:

Any trouble with internet or laundry?
Heard that there is no google fiber at the apt.

I have 50Mbps from TWC with no problems so far.

Laundry is on each floor, three washers and three driers, and I've only ever had to wait once for a machine to become available.

How many apt on each floor?

How many apt on each floor?

Umm I don't know exactly, but I'd say maybe 30-40? I think it goes up to 20 on my side of the building so I'd guess 40... lol.

hmm.. Thanks... The lack of in unit laundry and Google fiber kills me 🙁

Hows the neighborhood outside of the gates? Does it feel sketchy? Also any bus stops nearby?

Like I said, never had an issue waiting for a machine lol. The amount of studying I do elsewhere vs my apt also makes it okay not paying crazy amounts for Google Fiber haha. Starbucks has it though

It's not the best area and I certainly wouldn't go exploring on my own, but the people are pretty harmless and security is always around if you need them. There honestly aren't too many places in KC I would consider walking around alone at night anyway, so it doesn't make much of a difference to me personally.

There are actually several bus stops surrounding CT and the school but I have no clue where they go haha. I always see buses going every direction though, I can think of four stops within short walking distance from CT off the top of my head.

If you're looking for an apartment with in unit laundry and Google Fiber, I would recommend Centropolis at 501 Grand. I just signed a lease there. It is a brand new complex in River Market. All the units also have balconies. The only downside is that it is a lot more expensive than CT.

I think there are also a few streetcar stops within a few blocks of the building.

What are you paying for a one bedroom?

Is this the new forum for the new first years?

Lol, look who has finally joined the party 😛

Also, agreed, in-unit laundry and google fiber is definitely not worth more than twice the rent at CT haha. It's not luxurious by any means, but it's also budget friendly and provides the necessities good luck choosing housing!

I told him there wasn't any new thread 😉 #gunninghard

As for the housing, I have a 1bd/1bath and spend 1K every month. That comes with trash and other things but I still pay for electricity and internet. It's about 5 minutes away from school. It's a nice area, there's a park and a few little shops and cafe's walking distance. I think they're opening up a Coffee Shop/Local Brewery hybrid as well. So I'll be there drinking both at the same time for the next year and change. Probably more coffee than beer.

And you live where again?

I visited KC this past weekend to look for an apartment and had an amazing time. Being from an area with no large cities, exploring some of the attractions in Kansas City was a blast. With the help of a smart phone, getting around wasn't too big of a challenge and I was even starting to learn my way around some areas. I know I'm going to be super busy but I'm very excited to move downtown now.

The downtown freeway system is super confusing. Took me a while to figure it out haha.

Where is this new coffee shop you speak of?

Does anyone know what is up with the new Matriculation form over at the website (http://www.kcumb.edu/matriculation/)?
I submitted my matriculation forms weeks ago and there was nothing about a Physical examination. But apparently it's just been added in (on April 18th from the looks of it) but May 1st is still the deadline to submit it.

If you submitted the form and it's been accepted I wouldn't worry about it.

KCU is playing around with the website and I believe are creating a whole new one which is why there's a bunch of changes going on.

For those worried about the hepB series. As long as you start the series you should be fine. Just make sure to follow up with them to complete the series. Sometimes it's a pain to finish the series after moving so the Kansas City Health Dept offers them for free. Paper work is kind of annoying but better than paying a ton for a shot when you can get it for free.

How did you guys not have the hep B vaccine as children? It is a recommended vaccine, any pediatrician should have insisted you have it in grade school..

You can still not show sufficient antibodies. I was negative for mumps and measles in the MMR titers, but I've had like 5 MMR shots in my life. **** happens

On another note, how'd you like that 131-102 Thunder win tonight, @Mavs88? #thunderup

I was in grade school in the 80's. Wasn't required or pushed then.

Just as a tip since I've been seeing a lot of FB posts about what books to buy:

Biochem/MCM: get the medical biochem book, I'm sure every second year will be selling one and honestly having the highlights in there is good because that's what's on the professors learning objectives.

Immunology: unless you've taken immuno, would suggest buying and reading basic immunology. You don't need a hard copy. Ask a friend or your big for a digital one.

MSK: Moores clinical anatomy is good. They will usually test off the clinical blue boxes. Don't think you need a hard copy to lug around (it's a massive book).

Cardiopulmonary: Dubins EKG book is a must, it's cheap and quick to read.

Renal/GI/Endo/Repro: for the most part used Costanzo physiology and BRS physiology to supplement slides. Always focus on slides, whatever is on the slides is right, or you'll get royally screwed come exam time.

Neuro: didn't use anything. Dr Stephen's lecture notes will be more than enough.

MOD1(pathology): you need Big Robbins.

MOD2(clinical micro): you need Clin Micro made ridiculously simple.

Prayers answered! I have immunity to everything...including HepB after only 2 shots. Thank heavens!

Can anyone who has already completed the immunization form clarify what "supporting documentation" we include with the form and that we list the actual quantitative value on the line where it asks for the titer. I tried calling admissions, but I suspect they are occupied with the accepted students day today.

I added a copy of my titer reports (3 pages for me) and listed the value in the form.

I included my immunization record and the lab reports for the titers to show immunity and that the right tests were done. I also just put the dates of my immunizations/titers on the form.

Alright. I asked because I have multiple places where my immunizations were received over the years....so some records are really old and just photocopies, others are from prior school records (had KUMed send me a copy of my records from while I was in school there), and the most recent are just a print out from the health department where I went.

Going to add another tip because these are things I know will help everybody. When you start the anatomy portion: FIND A TUTOR. I don't care if you've had advanced anatomy in undergrad or an SMP, the tutors have a solid understanding of what these professors are going to test. They really don't change it up as it's important for them to get the high yield stuff (the stuff that's clinically important). It's def best to find 2-3 tutors and "browse aroundd" and see what fits your style. Do you want a tutor who spend the hour just showing you stuff or do
You want one who quizzes you after showing you once or twice?

I believe synapticdoctah, higherprimate, mammit01, and I will be tutors next year!

Does anyone know how much a month it is for Internet in CT, and what the process is like to get it set up and running? Thanks in advance!

CT has their own TWC rep, you'll have to ask Gia for his name/number. They usually have a special rate. I pay $29.99/month for 50Mbps and haven't had any issues. I also bought one of their recommended combined router/modem on my own to save money and not pay an equipment fee.

I believe you can also get AT&T here as well, but I had it in my old apartment last year and had issues with them, so I went with TWC here lol.

I make zero promises about this haha. But yes, I agree, tutors can be very helpful if you find one that works with your learning style!

Is anyone else having problems with accessing Netpartner?

Any update with netpartner yet? should we expect estimated funds soon or in may?

If you're talking about loans, you won't receive them until a few weeks after school starts. I think it was around August 10th-15th but that feels like ages ago so I might be wrong lol. You're responsible for expenses (rent, food, moving) up until that point unfortunately.

I think they are more interested in when the award letters will be available. The school indicated mid to late April, but haven't seen anything yet. I suppose there are still a few more days left this month. 🙂
