The Classes of 08 and 09 will be very lucky to have you around to be a fellow!
Welcome to our class 🙂

The ever growing Class of 07 🙂 **Which we all know rocks the house anyways **

Hey Chris,
Welcome... hey, I met Angel here in CT, he said he knows you and he sent you to Medicine Lodge, KS...he told me a lot about 3rd and 4th years...

We fell to page 4 and I'm extremely bored out of my mind.... 😱 Only 3 more weeks till we're done with 3/4th our first 2 classroom years...

You are BORED - are you kidding! I am soooo happy to have a few days off and thought I would see what was going on here. You are right though about the little amount of classes we have left. If you think about it we only have three graded sections after xmas and then integrative. I know we have to suck it up until the end of July. Right now I just want to make it through boards.

see you monday

We are falling behind guys🙂

Welcome back to KC - no more vacation until mid June.

Hope everyone had a great break and see you soon.

Yeah Angel is very cool and a great source of information about rotations. If you ever have questions about rotations or anything, don't hesitate to email/call me. Hope class is going well. I suspect you guys are just starting Endocrine?? Good section but was my worst!! 😱 😱

Peace out!

Hi Everyone -

Can someone inform me as to the positives and negatives of attending KCUMB. I'm having a difficult decision as to where it is that I want to attend. I've received acceptance from LECOM, KCUMB, and MSUCOM. Any advice?

well since you are from michigan, i would assume financially your best bet would be msucom. personally i would chose kcumb. i think this school has a lot going for it right now, and it is only getting better.... boards, instituition, curriculum, alumni... its all great and only getting better.

good luck.

I agree, unless you hated MSU, then it is probably your best bet financially. I'm happy here, though.

Go to where you're happy...however, I think MSUCOM can offer a better education ...my family knows a lot of people there, if I was from MI originally I would have chose that, but 40,000 for out of state was too high for me...its one of the top 25 primary care medical schools as well...so its ranked pretty high...

you are crazy if you do not go to where it is cheaper. your education is great at all DO schools in my opinion. if you can come out with under 200 grand, unlike myself, then i would definitely got to msucom.

Just wanted to bump this up, I couldn't find it...hey everyone, how's it going?
Just a few more months to go...
Just created this new name sicne I made a new email address since I'm going to be on this earth 1/4 of my life so far...I feel old 😱

Passee,
just to make sure you guys know I didn't decide to transfer. I assumed everyone would be on here, but I guess there's that boards thing or whatever...

I think I am going to change my ID to Inferior ILA, just sounds funnier.

Thanks for bumping the thread back up, I couldn't find it anymore
We're finally done with Graded class...now just P or F...

Was it just me or was that entire semester low yield. I am amazed at how little endocrine we were able to do in some of the earlier sections by having that so late, and that is just amazingly central. Maybe I'm just being hypokalemic...

Hey 2007s, you're almost done with 2nd year! Then you finish out the summer and go off to the wards, where you will be kicking butt.

I'm getting a lot of emails (which is great, keep 'em coming) about COMLEX and USMLE STEP I. Here's just my .02.

For COMLEX:
make sure that you KNOW the chapter 2 in the Simmons book on innervations. Know it cold. That is huge high yield for Steps I and 2.
My test had a bunch of sacrum. Practice using your id card as a scarum an how to diagnose based on description.
My test also had a bunch of cranial. Most was just diagnosis (i.e., vertical strain patttern).

I thought the pharm over all was real easy. It asks mostly about drugs by class, not by drug. Make sure that you understand what the CLASS of drugs does and some of its contraindications (for example, no quinolones in children). Also, read up on the weird reactions, like red man syndrome, photosensitivity, Stevens-Johnson.
And remember....always....common things are common. Think "the most likely." Don;t get yourself all wound up in thinking, "Well, I think it's meningitis and you would an antibiotic, but what if it were viral or fungal??AGGH!" Go back and re-read the question and ask yourself, most likely. Is this a 27 year old AIDs patient or a six year old previously healthy child?

KNOW the adrenergic/cholinergic drugs. Those are ON THE TEST.

Dr. El-Sawi's notes are high yield for micro. You absolutely should review those. I also liked the Micro made simple. Copy the graphs and go over them, make notes on the back about the important pathogens. Again, common things are common, think most likely. Study your STDs.

electra

Thanks...elektra...I'll let you know I'm still planning a time right now to fly to Michigan...I'll let you know about the referral thing as well once I find out where everyone else in my class will be just to see what they're thinking...most likely I'll stay in the same apartment complex...I've been so busy with Kaplan...

wow you actually found our thread - impressive! I heard alot of people got there schedules already just not those in KC.

see you later

You will have classes 4 days a week in the morning from 8-12. One day a week is dedicated to OMM and physical exam practicing. Your class will be split into two groups.

For your first section which is foundations of medicine most of your afternoons will be free but they will not be free once anatomy is introduced into your schedule. Okay I take back what I said about foundations of medicine - you have all sorts of labs - ie micro lab, core communications classes. I guess you will have about two afternoons free a week. Micro lab only lasts 1 hour and your class is split into 4 groups.

You will get your schedule during orientation week.

Muscle Skeletal section is your second section which is 6 weeks long - Anatomy will take up another afternoon.

Goodluck.

I was wanting to do psych in KC and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with someone that is good to do a rotation in?

You might want to go to the 2006 class thread since will just start our rotations in September. I rotate with Truman Med in November with Jarvis. I hear Truman is pretty good.

You too buddy. Glad to hear you did well on the USMLE! Kick butt at rotations and keep me posted on things! I will miss our class! Remember Diet Dr. Pepper is not good to chase with BEER 🙂

Dr. Pepper can only mean one person.... WALMART STORY IS THAT YOU?

Just wanted to get our thread back to the forefront for a little while. Yes, I am that bored right now.

Dr. Pepper...mmm...Diet Doctor Pepper...or the new Diet Cherry Flavored Dr. Pepper...bump this up...Good Luck with rotations...:luck:

This is what you read when your bored...there's always Pre-season football on TV. Apass...good luck and xxAnksxx you too...

Come on MSIII's Let's go show em our stuff.. 🙂

I got lucky....Friday's are essentially free w/my family med doc. We do some colonoscopies in the morning, but we're usually done in 2 hours. I found it surprising/cool that a family med doc still did colonoscopies, I thought that they were usually referred out. Hope everyone is having fun. 🙂

Current KCUMB students:

I read on the site that KCUMB students have a wide range of states to choose from for their clinical years. Now do you get assigned to those locations randomly, or do you get to kind of pick? Also, does anyone know about the details of the location in Texas? Is it located in a big city like Houston or Austin?

Thanks mucho!!!! 🙂

There are tons of places to choose from, some are urban, some are rural. If you stay in KC, you will have a mix and will be commuting a lot. I'm in rural Missouri. There should be a list on the OCCE website. I'm not sure of the URL, but I'm sure someone will find it and post it for you. As for choosing your site, it is done kind of lottery style. You choose your top three and the computer does the best fit match trying to give everyone their top choice. The school talks it up as being a near perfect system, but that is far from the truth. Make sure you ask current students at the sites you are interested in about the nitty gritty details. If there are problems, and they are honest, they will let you know about them. All in all, despite the fact that I didn't get my top choice, I am happy with my site, I just miss my family 🙁

Hi Shimmerz,

I'm a mere first year, but being from TX, I looked into rotation sites there during our Hospital Day a few weeks ago. There were two sites...one in mesquite and one in Lubbock; however, from what I was told, you can try to get 4th year rotation sites/electives at places in cities you want to be in as long as you can get approval from them.

Not sure I'm the best to give advice on this, but I'm from H-town too, so I thought I'd give you a holler.

Hope all is well and that you are glad to be back on the east coast!

Hi everyone! I'm planning on applying for DO schools next year, meanwhile, I have an important question. What's the passing rate at KCUMB? how many people per class fails out of the school each year? Is there a weeding out process even after the crazy admission process? In addition, is it possible to not be able to get a residency position even after graduation?

I really want to become a DO and I really want to go to KCUMB, but I need to gage the workload and exactly how hard is it to finish DO school. So I know what I'm going into and if I can handle it after forking out an insane amount of money.

any input is greatly appreciated

I have some questions about the KCUMB third and fourth year rotations. Do most people end up going off site for their 3d and 4th years? Do you generally stay at the same site both years, or can you switch? Finally, how do they determine who goes where? Is it a blind lottery, or do people with higher grades get the more coveted rotations?

I'd also like to know about the quality of the rotations--what are the most sought after sites? I am from New Jersey and saw there is a Newark rotation at St.Michael's and another one in Stratford. Are those good rotations/hard to get in? Do people there spend much time in New York? How hard are the Florida and Kansas City rotations to get?

Thanks so much!

The pass rate this year for the COMLEX was 95%. I think we had 7 out of 225 not pass the test. They may get mad at me for saying this but I truely believe this is a reflection of how much work they put into school. I really think that we have had two people fail out and a total of five people leave our class. One left due to an illness and one left and started up in the class of 2008.

Of course you can get a residency after graduation - what kind of question is that - seriously? Do you think the classes would fill every year. KCUMB has joint accrediation - we are the only DO school to have this. We are one of the first if not the first DO schools that require board passage to graduate. Still several do not require this. We have a great curriculm. There are always ongoing improvements to the school - currently building a patient simulater building and will break ground on a new library, fitness center and auditorium.

If the school interviews you then they are interested in you. Unless you really mess something up then you are a likely candidate. DO school is just like any other medical school. What you put into your education is what you get out of it. I know I study alot more than others but that is just me - Yes it is a serious time commitment but if you work hard I would think you will do fine.

Let me know if you have any more questions - the one about residency after graduation - that was annoying - sorry but it was annoying. Maybe I didn't understand your question - let me know.

Okay so typically about 90 people will stay and rotate in KC. The entire class goes through a lottery process were they chose the top three places they want to go - you match during the beginning of your second year and know by thanksgiving. Most, approx. 95%, get their first choice. I think only three people got their third choice and everyone else matched with no problem. Yes the rotations in NJ and NY are good. Barnabas is a great urban hospital - sure it is not real pretty but I guarentee it will be a good education. I think the site in PA is also great. The rotations are not hard to get you just need to select your top three choices - most get what they want - promise.

You have 10 required rotations your third year and they must be done with an affilated hospital. One rotation is optional - you can choose where and what you want. Fourth year - there are three required, one month family, ER and cardio. The rest of fourth year is up to you - whereever you want to go - the sky is the limit. Most people elect to rotate in the programs they are interested in regardless of AOGME (osteopathic) or ACGME (allopathic programs). If you are in KC then you rotate at various hosptials - so far this year I have been at Research, Childrens and North Kansas City. Those who actually move out of town are typically assoc. with just one hospital. There are definately pros and cons to both.

let me know if you have any other questions. goodluck.

Thanks for the info. Do you have a list of the affiliated hospitals? I'm really curious to see what all the typical options are.

check out the kcumb website - go to www.kcumb.edu and go to clinical education - it is on the right . Then go to the class of 2007 clerkships and then click affliated core training sites - hope that helps.

I know I am a little crabby - normally not so bitchy but I seem to get annoyed easier lately. I tell ya I am soooo tired of seeing the same topics pop up in the osteopathic threads. hope you are doing well. I am really really enjoying orthopedic surgery at OSI - north KC hospital is nice and that program is pretty nice. I like all the residents alot not sure how they feel about another female though. They just took their first female this past year. Don't lose my blueprints🙂 love you buddy🙂
