York... are you looking for an apartment or a house? If you are looking for a house, a lot of people live in Kansas City, MO north of the river or in the Mission, KS area, both are safe. Same goes with apartments, there are five different complexes in Mission right by each other and I live in one of them now. It is really up to you, people live everywhere.

I was worried about crime too. I'm gonna live in North KC. I think a lot of students with families live up there. There are a lot of options though. The cool thing is that it is really easy to get around in KC so you can live further out and still not have a huge drive. If you want to rent you should call that lady that helps students move up there. They gave us her number in that relocation guide. Maybe she will be able to help find you a good deal and let you in on the neighborhood info.

Depends on what you want....

If you don't want a yard, there are plenty of decent apartments/townhomes in the downtown/plaza area..

If you are looking for a yard, you could go to North KC...(or at least that's what i would suggest)...since it's the closest commute..for the most reasonable money (I think).

What did I do when I found out...well....I pissed away a week celebrating by enjoying some tasty beverages and cigars.

So, MJB, is the traffic not so congested communting to KCUMB fro NKC during rush hour as compared to the other places? Do you know if they have all day Kindergarten?

Oh boy am I feeling you on this one! I have turned into a major procrastinator with a bad case of senioritis. I just can't get into school this last semester of my undergraduatehood. Like right now, I have a midterm tomorrow but instead of studying I'm here on SDN. Go figure. 🙄

As for the traffic, I will say this...From Johnson County, KS, it sucks taking 35North during rush hour...same for taking I-70 West into Downtown from the Independence area.

The reason I would choose NKC is because you can live within 5 minutes or so of the Paseo bridge up there, and be at school..Traffic on the Paseo Bridge isn't too fun, but if you only commute 15 minutes instead of 35, that's worth it to me.

Plus, there are some pretty decent, much more affordable homes in NKC when compared to Mission, Shawnee, Overland Park, etc..

Waldo area of KCMO (south of plaza) is nice, but I'm not too hip on the schools there (public)...the public schools up north, and especially in Liberty are better.

Hi Guys/Gals,

I hope you don't mind if I chime in here, since I am nearly native to the KC metro area.

First, I would like to tell those of you who are new to the area about the traffic. Is it bad. Well, it depends of course on what you are used to. If you are coming here from Chicago or Houston, you will think the traffic situation is great no matter where you live in the area. On the other hand, if you are coming from rural Kentucky or small town Florida, you will think it is awful. But generally, unless you live really close to the school (like CT), you are going to have to budget 30-60 minutes. Those who live in NKC will most likely get there first, but you still should always give yourself the time because there are only a few ways into the city from the North (meaning bridges) and if there is an accident, you have few alternates. By and large, NKC would probably be a great place to live though.

On schools, it is well known in the metro that the Shawnee Mission school district in KS (Overland Park, Leawood, Mission) are the best in the state of Kansas. So if you have a family, it is great place to live. Sure the commute will be maybe a little longer, but the school situation is very good there. Personally, it is a bit congested for me, but I have many friends who live there and love it.

Now, on the Missouri side (where I live), I just read recently that Liberty's schools were rated as top in the state. I also know that Blue Springs and Lee's Summit (where I live) have top rated schools. Like Johnson County, KS, these areas are your typical suburban cities and are all three very nice. They are probably a bit cheaper than Johnson County, KS and a bit less congested (although that is changing as all three are growing really fast).

I know I am leaving out lots of other great places to live (Parkville, Olathe, Gladstone, Smithville), but really if you want to make a good decision, then come down and spend a day and check out a handful of these cities with your significant other. Then get up the next day and drive it at about 6:30. Don't listen to the rental folks though, they always give you the minimum commute times at 10:30 am. LOL. Just remember that there is so much variation in commute times that it is really hard to plan. I have lived all over the metro area and I have ALWAYS planned one hour, no matter where I live. That has always worked for me as it is very rare that I am late. Sur I could probably make it in 30 minutes most days, but if something happens, you will be late. Unless you are across the street (CT) or living in midtown or downtown, you will probably have to do like me and give yourself plenty of time.

By and large, I love this city and I think you all will too. Just make sure and give it some time. Remember, the area around the school is in no way indicative of the rest of the area. 🙂

I currently live in Mission (I am finishing up a masters program at KUMed) and on my interview day during rush hour it took max 20 minutes to get to KCUMB (I live right off of I-35 and Lamar)... I think my fiance (who will also be attending KCUMB in the fall) and I are probably going to be buying in the mission, merriam, roeland park, fairway, or overland park area... They have great schools here, like someone said before (Shawnee Mission district)... since I grew up on the Kansas side it is what I know best. There are quite a few houses for sale, I recommend looking through yahoo real estate, that is what we are doing, you can find a three bed two bath house for under 200,000 in this area. I can post more if people have more questions...

I'm a KS person at heart, so I know where you're coming from...just not a fan of JoCo at all.

Taxes on MO side will generally be cheaper.

It really, REALLY depends on what a person is looking for.

I would love to live in a DT loft, but my wife and dogs won't go for that.

I plan on living in CT. I know the area isn't nice, but I'm not a morning person and don't want to get up half an hour earlier to drive. The area is pretty bad. I have been there in the middle of the night and I was terrified. Of course it was the middle of the night.

So I guess most of the single people are gonna live at CT. Also its not the safest place to walk around at night, from our tours, they said you can get a police escort to CT if your alone. Oh yeah, and a car is needed to get groceries which are mostly around the PLaza area.

If I were single, I'd definately live at CT and wouldn't care about the surrounding area. CT seemed to have had enough security. I just wouldn't venture of more in a certain direction. I'd have to have a car. JJ, you could probably meet some classmates with cars who live at CT if you can't get one. They probabkly would take you along when they were getting groceries and stuff. I know I would do that.

I'll eventually get my application in for CT....no sense in commuting to an 8am class! Plus, if I want to take a nap in the middle of the day, I can go crash at home if it is across the street.

As for cars, I can see that it would be fairly necessary for running errands, but like it has already been said....meet some people who have cars and you are in. I got no problem running around KC getting stuff done....especially if it keeps me from having to study or go to class (yeah senioritis!!!).

Yeah, JJCandy, I think it has been mentioned many times already, but the area the school is in not exactly the best. I haven't heard any horror stories about any students though. I think if you stay in the right places (CT and the school), it really is probably not an issue. I think security is pretty good.

I also know there will be tons of people living in CT. You won't be alone. I think there is a constant flow of students back and forth between CT and the school. But you will need a car or a friend with a car for supplies. If it is an issue, you could probably swing it by hitching a ride with a fellow student to the store (remember, we are all in this together). But if you demand freedom, you will want a vehicle.

If I were single, I would probably live there. Inexpensive, close, plus it will always be easy to find study partners.

Hey fellow classmates! I haven't sent in my fee yet, am waiting to hear back from one more school but think its most probable that I'll be in KCUMB class of 2010!
I live in the Kansas City area. Traffic can be bad, but it really depends on where your coming from and what direction your going. For instance, Interstate 70 Westbound is unclogged in the later part of the day where Eastbound is unclogged in the morning. Most of the interstates are like that. Its just when your going the wrong direction at the wrong time of day, your in trouble. Also as far as I'm concerned, the bad traffic areas, i.e. the triangle and South portion of 435, are far enough from the school you won't have to deal with them. I live 15 miles from my workplace and never take more than 30 minutes to get there. Thats not too bad.
On crime, I know that we have a high rate, but it doesn't affect your average Joe. The reason I think the rate is so high is that Independence is one of the nations Meth labs, basically. As far as I have heard, the only people who are victimized are those that are involved in drugs and prostitution. So stay away from that (tempting isn't it, 😉 j/k) and you should be fine.
On where to live - North Kansas City is good and so is Independence - although not all parts of NKC and Independence are created equal. Go check out the area, you should be able to tell whats a safe area and what isn't, and you'll be fine. I'm not sure of the commute, but if your married with a family, east of 291 on 24 HWY in the Osage/Susquehanna area, you can get a pretty nice house (3 br/2 bath) for <$130,000. AND if anyone's looking to buy, we're selling our 2 br 2 1/2 bath townhome for somewhere around $110,000. Its pretty new, we were the first owners (bought it two years ago). Its got a garage, and comes with all appliances other than washer and dryer. Its in a great neighborhood (houses nearby are worth $300K plus. The commute would be somewhere around half an hour. We're selling cuz its just a 2 br and we have two kids... otherwise its a great house for a small family or even a group of roomates. If anyone wants more info, email me at [email protected]

I was told that they had to be solid colors and thats it. Scrubs can be expensive so I'd be all for getting hand me downs. I am lucky that i have tons of scrubs already but they were all from different jobs and mainly are navy blue, nutmeg (that's a drone color) and yellow. I'm gonna have to pick me up some purple or pink ones before I start!

Yeah, the sucky thing for me is almost all of my tops are printed--none of my solid colors match. I was thinking about from here on out, every time, I get paid to pick up a scrub outfit or a professional attire outfit--I have a lot of jeans.

I would definitely recommend a car....KC is a "car city"....pretty spread out, but if you're planning on doing mostly school...and not much else, you could live at CT and not worry about it and just use the bus/cabs.

I believe there is some grocers getting ready to open near DT KC...so that would be good...

I know its still early in the game but lets hear from those that got accepted and what your plans are. Considering anymore interviews? Any other acceptances? Anyone have to wait till Feb or later for other schools and possibly lose the $2K deposit required at KCUMB?

I'll start. Got my acceptence letter dated Sept 28th!!! Also interviewed at TCOM. Have to wait till Feb for the Texas match. However did poorer on the August MCAT so I'm in limbo right now.

From what I gathered about the dress code, they are not THAT strict...I'm sure scrubs will be fine for studying in the library....I can't imagine anyone walking around past 8:00 in the evening checking if the student are in their suits and dress pants..that would be cruel...

Call them and ask when their adcom meeting is. They meet every two weeks and if you interviewed at the beginning of the cycle, it'll take two weeks. But they'll tell you when the meeting is and even tell you on the phone if you've been accepted or not if the meeting has already taken place.

Blacklabmom,,, dont worry about it, you probably got in. some people hear earlier than others. I had my interview on a thursday and got really lucky that the adcom met the next day. I had a letter in my mailbox the following tuesday, only 5 days after the interview. It was quite nice knowing that fast. others wait longer.

On another note, I can finally send my second $1000 in. I just got a refund for a class I dropped that I didnt need for my degree. the check ended up being higher than expected so I can pay the deposit and have a little bit left over. I am excited about that.

I'd call them. I interviewed 11/10, they said that I would hear something by like the 21st or something, when I didn't get anything (and everyone was about to be on Thanksgiving break) I called and was told, "You're in!" 😍
I received the letter 3-4 days later (I think).

I sent my deposit yesterday, now I'm broke like everyone else and I just got paid today. 👎

Blacklabmom, I interviewed on a Tuesday and got my acceptance letter 6 days later on the following Monday. I also received an acceptance at another excellent school too (I won't mention names), but it took 3 months from the interview date. You can tell KCUMB cares about its students. Any of you that are thinking about going somewhere else, think again. You will be being educated at a place that promotes team spirit and where everyone is truly there to make sure we ALL succeed. Not to mention, the facilities are incredible. And I think both the DO and MD board scores speak for themselves. I have met well over 50+ students at this school, and I have never met anyone who speaks poorly of it. In addition, have you ever noticed how nice everyone who gets accepted is. I think there must be some sort of friendly personality requirement to get in. Definitely should give us a sense of the positive culture at the school.

Can you tell? I am really enthusiastic about this school. 😍

Good point. I just keep thinking about what I could be doing with $2000, like paying off my credit card bill. But I guess that means I'll have $2000 less to spend next year.

I was reading some of the earlier posts about which classes to take before starting med school and I had a question. My senior year I plan on taking biochem (since it's required) and anatomy. I was also going to take Immunology and Pathogenic bacteriology but should I replace one of these with Histology? If so, which one?
