I called the admissions office the day after I knew they met on my interview and they told me over the phone that I was accepted. If the wait is killing you it probably would be fine to call them.
You're obviously talking about Boyajian. I liked her okay, but she's not exactly Osler. Her lectures weren't that great if ask me and a significant portion of the incoming class would have never rotated with her anyway. I guess Willsie is still the dean. She is good but she only gave a couple of lectures a year and I am not sure she did much on the wards. Granted, turnover is always concerning, but it happens everywhere. Losing a couple of family medicine faculty is not the end of the world I assure you. You can learn family med from anyone, anywhere. Not a slam, just the truth. Replacing them with some additional biochem and microbiology instructors to bolster Step 1 scores would be an upgrade if you ask me.
1. Anyone still interested in the party for August birthdays suggestion? My 30th will be during the 1st week of classes. T-funk, was it you that will be turning 30 on the 19th? Glad to hear I'm not the only one 🙂. Sounded like several people have a bday that month, and if anyone's still interested I'll be living at CT. I could donate my espresso machine and a few mixology tools to the cause.
Hey, BamaAlum,
I pretty much agree with you. Turnover is natural and it doesn't usually bother me that much, since I've worked in the business sector before and understand how the ebb and flow of things. And I don't care that much about the FM dept. either; they have some good and some okay professors, but they do a good job with what they have. As I look back, I think that nothing was terribly wrong with my education, but I don't know how much of that was me working independently, doing what needed to be done, and how much was the result of instruction. It's hard to separate the two... I mean we all know what we have to do, it's just either harder or easier to get what we need... It's such a blur and it is amazing how fast things move.
Anyway, one of the reasons I think Dr. B leaving is a fairly big loss, is because she actually cared about the students and in my opinion, losing a professor who has that kind of attitude who has been there that long and then hiring a rent-a-prof who doesn't care that much (and fairly unavailable), is a bit sad.
Yes, so going back to turnover. It's the trend that bothers me. There's turnover everwhere, but there is a sort of a corporate ethos that facilitates it around campus. I don't know how to put it into words. I guess the best I can do is to say that the school is run like a business these days, not an academic institution. My sense is that it has become somewhat of a driving force in their decisions and processes, instead of favoring a sound academic environment. I've heard some stories from professors and fellows on how it is to work at the university and there is some corroboration with my sense. Anyway, two professors have already left (and, yes, Dean Willsie is definitely gone; she resigned completely) and one is going to follow shortly (Dr. B). The word is that more are to follow and not just in the clinical departments, in basic science, too. There is no tenure at the university, as far as I know. I'm sure that makes it easy to leave if the environment isn't favorable.
So, yeah, I'm concerned. I don't like it that decent professors are leaving and we get more and more rent-a-profs. I don't like it that business is driving the school. I know turnover happens at every school, but it seems to be happening at a frequency that bothers me and I don't like what is being done and the reasons why it's happening.
I guess what the incoming first-years don't know won't hurt them. There's nothing to miss, since they are coming into a particular environment and will likely adapt to it. I just think there are plenty of other schools where this crap isn't going on. While I can't say how much of an impact the business decisions are impacting the academics, I do think it's having some. Where there is choice of schools out there, it would be wise to investigate and choose accordingly.
It's finally here... The 2008 Match List, attached to this post. Be aware that it's not 100% complete.
What exactly is "Preliminary" Internal Medicine?
The list is strong with a lot of radiology, neurology, surgery, and ortho
As far as I can tell, it is constantly that way. BTW, the OSI group (ortho) is pretty good and they are local; they tend to take a lot of folks from KCUMB.
I don't think Neurology is a particularly competitive residency to match into, but matching into rads, ortho, neurosurgery, gen. surg., anesthesiology, ENT, and even EM, especially if any of them are to ACGME programs, is pretty impressive. Although IM isn't really competitive, doing your IM residency at Cleveland Clinic sounds awesome, especially if you want to eventually do a fellowship in Cardiology there.
It exists as a club organization already.
Sounds good. I'll be 29 on the 25th. I was going to ask earlier had anyone heard from CT. They finally deposited my reservation fee a few weeks ago. Am I to assume I have a room? Hmmmm... Anyway, I will be in town hopefully by July 22nd. If anybody else is there, we should get together for some guinness or wine or something...
!! I love me some Guinness and there are few things in life finer than good red wine. It's all the B vitamins and antioxidants. Really. Endocardium - I don't find Medical Students for Choice listed under KCUMB's list of student organizations. The MS4C website also lists KCUMB as a med school without a chapter. Are you thinking of Medical Students for Life or has the chapter formed too recently for it to be listed? Thanks.
CT said they would be contacting people in May with more info on address, move-in day payments, apt choice and rate. Also, if you requested help finding a roommate, they said the school handles that part, most likely in May. If they deposited your check, I'd say you've got a room. They pretty much approved me even though their credit check company is having trouble getting a correct report on me. Maybe it's all those years I spent in the CIA.

As for the August Birthdays List:
8th - PokerDoc
13th - I'll be 30
19th - t-funk will be 30
25th - Alex will be 29
Any votes as to when? Early in the month before classes start (good time to meet and greet)? Later in the month (once people have gotten to know each other we can celebrate "really" being in med school)? I'll be gone the weekend of the 15th-17th and I'm guessing people might be a little hungover on Fri the 8th (i.e. open bar after white coating ceremony on the 7th - consider it an early bday present from the school PokerDoc 👍). Any suggestions?

yeah i heard most students drink every night that week lol
Ok, so orientation from what I remember. It lasts from Mon.-Thur. and the weekend is yours. Monday you have an introduction, you take pics for your class cards, take some class on how to use the library and stuff. It's either the same day, or Tues. when you meet with big bro/sis and have lunch, then pick up bone boxes.
Oh, and if you guys didn't see the match list for '08, S**T is impressive. 3 matched plastics, 6 Rads, 10 Anesthesia, 7 Ortho, 1 ENT, 1 Urology, 1 neurosurgery, I mean that alone blows away most med schools in the country M.D. or D.O.
What are bone boxes?
Has anyone called this morning to see if the decisions are posted from Friday's committee meeting?
So......... Because I am off of work today and have very little to do. I decided we could look at this match list issue more objectively. I pulled up match lists from two schools, basically randomly, that I figured everyone would be familiar with. There may be better schools to compare KCUMB to, in terms of size, focus, etc. But these are the two I thought of first. St. Louis University SOM and UMKC SOM. I put the numbers available from KCUMB (out of the previous posters excel spreadsheat), SLU, and UMKC into separate spreadsheats and counted the numbers and percentages. Looks to me like KCUMB is right in there with both of these schools. Anyway, I'll post them up so you guys can see. I think there is definitely something to be pround of at KCUMB. Another note, however. The goal of a medical school should be to produce compassionate and competent physicians, regardless of the specialty. I beleive KCUMB is doing that. So I don't consider it a bad thing that there is a higher percentage of family med/internal med coming out of KCUMB. In fact, I think that is great b/c I think preventative medicine is so important and will only become more important in coming years. That said, I think the number and variety of specialties coming out of KCUMB is impressive. Sorry for the long note. View attachment 10221

I agree that KCUMB's match list is fairly impressive, but I will note that I've seen much better, all things considered. I only had a problem with my colleague claiming it was better than most, MD or DO, which I don't think is true. However, I wouldn't judge a school based on a match list; it says more about a given class than anything else.
Also, FWIW, I do think KCUMB is at least on par with UMKC (which is a 6 year BS/MD medical school), SLU, and even KU Med (for which you didn't post the match list). I recall hearing that locally, RD's rather prefer our students because of their reputation for being outstanding and hardworking. However, I wouldn't go nuts with that... We are a good school and we produce good physicians. That's all that concerns me. 🙂

I agree completely. I sure hope I will be accepted. 🙂
The match list is pretty good, no question, but I wouldn't make as bold of a statement as you did. I'm proud of our school, but your statement is an exaggeration.
Fixed it for you Spice. 🙂

Ah, thanks, Harvey. My brain is a bit fried from trying to study the Hematuria schemes.![]()

When I called Friday afternoon, they told me it was not posted. They said the admissions committee met Friday morning, but it was not posted on the computer. Just wondering if anyone called yet.
I called at 12:30 central and she said to try back after 3:00 today. Man I sure hope I can find out today because I have to mail in a deposit for the postbac I got into.
Hey it's posted! I was ACCEPTED!!! WOOHOO!!!
