Just to let all interested Iowa applicants know: I called Iowa 1/2 and was told that interview invites have not been sent yet for the last set of interviews-files are now in review to determine who gets them

They told me today that the interview invites for the last batch should go out next week. They also said that the rejection letters should be not too far behind. (For the record, I asked about the timing of the rejection letters. I'm the kind of person who can't help but pick at scabs and poke at canker sores...😳)

Just keeping everyone updated: I just got my rejection letter from Missouri. It wasn't a big surprise, since I called them couple of weeks ago to find out the status of my application, and they told me that since I didn't get an interview invitation, I'm not in the first round of their "selected non-residents". Oh well. I still have 3 more schools to go. Missouri wasn't my first choice, so I am not terribly upset, but it still stings a little. 🙁

I got the magic rejecto letter from Mizzou too. Not a shock at all given what FarGeese found out (I haven't been a full-time student in 11 years, but managed to work full-time AND take prereqs AND a master's at night, but apparently that doesn't matter to them 😡)

So I got a letter back in Nov right after submitting the supplemental for Mizzou, saying I would not be considered since I had not been a full time student for a semester in the last 5 years. I thought that was the end of it until I got a letter today. I have typed it word for word for the OCDers like myself out there. I don't really know if this means the rest of you out there should be expecting letters too, or if they just felt they needed to tell me once again that I was not in (Very Tacky in my opinion) but at the very least it seems they've decided on their OOS spots for now, maybe. I am still mad at them for not making it clear on the VCMAS stats or even on their homepage that I needed to have been a full-time student in the last 5 years; that was a hundred bucks I could have saved!

This is an interesting requirement. I didn't look at Mizzou, so I don't know their requirements. I would have to say that it is very dubious if they didn't state this requirement anywhere in their information. I admit that sometimes it is hard to juggle all of the requirements of each school, but this would be an obvious problem that any non-trad would notice immediately.

I wonder what the purpose of such a requirement could be 😕? I can only imagine that taking classes while pursuing a full-time career is very hard (even though this is basically how any research intensive graduate program is, you live in the lab, leave to go to class and then come back). It is not like non-trads or returning students are gaining any academic advantage by not taking full course loads.

When I spoke with the admissions counselor, she said the requirement was to make sure that the student would be able to withstand the rigors of a full course load. I wrote a whole letter about how I overloaded over half of my college career to get in two diverse majors in 4 years (Bio and Studio Art, not alot of cross pre-reqs for those two, ha ha) and still managed to get a 3.4, and that I was taking graduate level classes while teaching school and coaching after school sports, but to no avail.

Incidentally, the worst part is that I had called with another question altogether and the admissions counselor just happened to ask if I knew about the requirement. A search by Sheltergirl I think found it in the FAQ section only. I plan on sending a letter out to them asking them to please place this information on the requirements page, or on the page you look up on VCMAS for school requirements, because I would definitely have noticed it if it had not been buried like it was. I only had the money to apply to 5 schools too, so I could have used that 5th spot to apply for a school without this ridiculous requirement.

Sort of irritating all around.

These schools need to completely redo their websites! Many of them not only look unprofessional, but are completely unorganized and some important information is buried in places you would never think to look. It just gets on my nerves because it's pretty well understood that nowadays people are getting most of their information online.

That's a really strange pre-req and I really don't understand it. I'm not sure why it matters when you were able to withstand a rigorous course load and they really should take into consideration other aspects. I know that we often look at a schedule to see how many credit hours a student had per semester/quarter and if it is weak we ask if there was a reason (work/outside commitments), but to across the board not accept someone that hasn't been a FT student in the past 5 years seems ridiculous.

I couldn't agree more! Most vet school websites are horrible!! I've yet to find one where I don't have to dig and dig to find the info I need.

Not only that, but some sites have conflicting information within them....

Hello everyone!

I am new to this site; I just found it and am thrilled that there is a place to vent my obsessiveness with others who are equally as frustrated due to the waiting period! Here's my application info and status:

I am a Connecticut resident. GPA 3.1, GRE: Q720, V600, working for small animal vet for 6 years; ridden horses for entire life; grew up on small horse farm; equestrian team member, was captain for a period of time; go to small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania--Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major, double major in History. I work for a small animal place at school as well. I volunteer with my equine vet. I did research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Long Island this past summer. I had 4 recs from veterinarians--small animal and large. 1 rec from my PI from this past summer. 2 recs from Prof's.

Now for schools/application info & status:

Cornell--waiting to hear decision
Tufts--heard nothing so far
UPenn--got the postcard in November; heard nothing yet
Ohio--Interviewed on 12/16. Website says "decision pending" still.
Kansas--heard nothing so far
Tennesee--heard nothing so far
Iowa--applied last minute, because Connecticut made a contract for 5 positions for CT residents at Iowa and they extended the deadline. Got an email saying that I was missing a few prereq's (I wasn't planning to apply there until CT made the contract). I emailed back asking about completing them over the summer if I was conditionally accepted. There's no way I can take them next semester and still graduate on time!
RVC London--heard nothing so far
Edinburgh--heard nothing so far
Glasgow--interview in February

Is it a bad sign that I haven't heard from a lot of schools about interviewing yet???? I'm worried...

SarahLT33, I can't speak for the other schools, but as for Tennessee, interview invites will not go out until February (probably late in the month). Interviews are held March 14-20th, and decisions go out sometime in the first week of April, if I remember correctly.

I don't think it's too bad you haven't heard anything yet! I haven't heard from Cornell (I don't think anyone has) and Penn interviews LA candidates later (if you put down equine). As for OSU, I think you just need to sit it out and wait for the letter to come via snail mail. And I don't know much about the other schools, but hopefully you will hear from them soon!

It's a waiting game and I hate it!

Yep, it's a horrible waiting game at this point... but tomorrow's a weekday and another day that mail comes! it's so sad that that is how I think about it now. Last year the VA-MD invites went out by email on Fri, Jan 12th. The interviews were set for the 1st or 2nd week of Feb., I can't remember exactly, I think my ill-fated interview was the 9th. Acceptances/Rejections came 2-3 weeks later, phone calls to acceptances, and letters the next week to the rejected.

But that is not going to be me this year, because I am going to ROCK my interview this year, YEAH!

When Purdue sent me an interview invitation last year, I just called back and politely declined the interview. You could also call and just ask your application to be taken out of consideration.

Hey there VelcroSky (and other Cornell alternates). I talked to the admissions office today and Jennifer said they will not (this is a definite no!) tell you your rank on the waitlist. They do have a master list and they pull people from that list as spots open. The reason they won't tell you your rank is that as people drop out your position changes and I guess they don't want to have to update you constantly and/or have you lose hope if you are low. I am basically taking this as a no for now, if I get that call then I will bring Cornell back into the decision process again. Just an update. 🙂

Fargeese, if you don't mind me asking, but what exactly was bad at your interview? VA-MD is my instate school, and I'm literally freaking out every time I even think about the interview. How would you prepare specifically for VA-MD interview? And what kind of questions does "the cold team" ask?

Rejected from Cornell. I'm really disappointed; it was my in-state, and I kind of fit their demographic of reasonably high GRE/GPA+research. I guess I need to work on large animal experience, but I'll call them soon anyways and make sure.

VetMed555, you should not freak out about VA-MD, it was high pressure, but mostly what went wrong was my own fault. I drove there that morning, and I had to stop twice along the side of the road to throw up, I was so nervous. I also screwed myself because I didn't apply anywhere else, so there was that pressure too. So I went in nervous as hell even before I went in.

The hot interview was the worst for me, they put you at the head of the table and all stared at me while I talked. One of the interviewers picked a tiny detail out of my application that I had only a little to say about so that was bad, and kept picking at me until I got to the point where I did not know what he wanted me to say. The last question was "with debt loads risings for new graduates what do you think we need to do as a profession to improve our salaries". I wanted to say, "If there was an answer to this you wouldn't have to ask or you'd be richer" but I was a blithering idiot by this time. It was like I was floating above my own body listening to myself, trying to tell myself to shut up, yet the crap kept flowing out of my mouth, ha ha. I knew when I got out that I was done for.

The cold interview was better, they just ask general questions about vet med. I know they asked me why vet over human med and about feral cat populations. It is all in the interview feedback forum under the negative icon. I found it less stressful as it was in a small room with just 2 people, neither of whom were surgeons, heh.

My experience was horrible because of me, not them. I am much better prepared this year in terms of experience, and I applied to multiple schools this time, so I hope to go in more relaxed.

Fargeese: I'm sorry about your interview last year. I'm sure it'll go great this year, and hope you'll get it. I think my problem is similar to yours: I start speaking before I prepare a coherent answer. I have to remember to slow down and organize it in my head.

OSJ: Sorry about VA-MD and Missouri. I'm sure you were perfectly qualified, but both of those schools only take around 10 people out-of-state. (I was rejected by Missouri about a week ago). I am in-state for VA-MD, but I'm still nervous.

Rejected by Cornell yesterday (am OOS). I am really disappointed as I am a Cornell alum - not because I thought this meant anything on my app, but because I really love the school and Ithaca.

Oh, earlier I was withdrawn from consideration by MSU and NCS. MSU - one of my ELOR was not from a vet (he preferred to do paper) and NCS because I had too many prereqs to complete in the spring.

I am feeling extremely discouraged today.

Rejection letters from VA-MD do not go out all at once. The lady I spoke to said the rejection letters go out in batches as you do not meet competitive requirements. She said not hearing yet is a good thing.
