LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
^^why don't you give them a call?? ask for JUNE Flaim.

No way. I'm afraid. Look at our stats - they're almost identical. So if you get in and I don't that means I'm a hateful unworthy ******ed old thing who was tremendously foolish to even think I could get in to med school and should have known my place and stuck with my boring unfabulous engineering career.

Plus I'm crushing on Bradenton like I was crushing on Dale Eisele in the 7th grade (also 8th grade, 9th grade, etc. until that ho-bag nimrod cheerleader Kris Pack bagged him). Of course this was before you all were born.

So of course I'd rather suffer through the next 4-7 days than jinx it.

Dont think that about yourself.. if anything, THAT is what is going to jinx you. I really couldn't handle not knowing once I know that they knew..

ps. I totally had to psych myself up to call.. just do it!

anyone interviewing on 2/8?

I am

Unless I get accepted to Touro NV (Interview 1/28) before then. I don't want to make the trip to FL if I don't have to.

I've been hoping that you get good news! When you get to the planning stage of moving down here, let me know. I live in B'ton and would be glad to help you out!

Krissss -
Would love to hear you talk about Bradenton some. I'm taking MCAT on Saturday and am waiting until scores to get potential interview. I'm definitely a non-trad. Tell me what you like about the school!
sherruns

Go DrMidLife you're my only hope!
(im nontrad like you, taking MCAT on Sat., hoping to pull a 30 out of my **s!)

I'm from Bradenton as well. If anyone has ?s about the area and/or surrounding areas, feel free to ask! I actually grew up there and moved to Gainesville for college... looks like I'll be going back for medschool, unless I get an acceptance at NOVA.

I have a quetion for student or people that live in Bradenton.

If I do go to Lecom-b I was thinking of buying a one bed room place instead of renting.

any comments? thx

Well, obviously it's a total buyer's market at the moment. The market is so flooded with homes for sale that it is actually driving the price of rentals down, as many people opt to rent out rather than loose money selling their homes now.

So....great time to buy, but if you plan on selling in a couple years you are gambling that the market will have turned around by that time...and maybe it will. It all depends on your situation, but it's a pretty big gamble - I know several people who bought homes and are now leaving for rotations who are looking at renting their homes for below their mortgage payments...

Let them know that I am looking for a house!

Thanks Kris! I know nothing about the area, so help is definitley appreciated! I know there is a beach and nice weather though 😍 lol!

Do you know any websites that show the apartments/homes that are for sale?

I am interviewing next Wednesday. What is a cheapest hotel around LECOM-B area? I am trying to save as much money as possible, so far it's costing me $220 for plane tickets and that's not including car rental fees. Thanks in advance!

If you're renting a car, then just look up a Motel 6 or Super 8 in the area. Note that this removes any assurance that you'll sleep well (there's always a party next door when I stay cheap) and it may take you an hour to get to LECOM in the morning amid rush hour traffic.

I stayed at the Hampton in Ellenton, which was fine. The front desk upgraded me for free when I went down to ask for a different room after the boys across the hall carried in a truckload of 24 packs of Burgermeister. This hotel gets a lot of biz from LECOM and they're motivated to help candidates. It's about 20 minutes from LECOM at rush hour. On the order of $100/night.

To minimize morning travel time, I would have considered the Fairfield on University and LWR Blvd, but it's 5 minutes old so it's an unknown. Looks like regular rates are around $170/night, yikes.

I don't know about cheapest, but the Econolodge isn't bad and it's about 15 minutes from the school. You can also walk to a Wafflehouse for breakfast 😛

Thanks DrMidlife and DragonWell.I think I am going to stick with Econolodge. 54.99 is not bad for a room, and I like how it's close to LECOM and a Wafflehouse. 🙂

^^I think those prices are just guesses.. I couldn't get any hotel for that cheap when I tried to book for mine..

The econolodge is probably your best bet. I'm a current LECOM-B student, class of 2011, and I stayed at the Days Inn right near the Econolodge when I had my interview. I wouldn't recommend the Days Inn because they gave me a smoking room (disgusting!) and I was already too tired by the time I got into the hotel to complain(1:30am the night before the interview). My suit and all my other clothes smelled like smoke until I got them dry cleaned.

Heres a quick summary of my trip, a lesson in "what not to do". Basically, I flew from South Bend into Tampa with a connecting flight in Atlanta. Well, my baggage didn't make it on the flight to Tampa, and I had to wait at the airport until about midnight for the next flight which luckily contained my bags. Then there was lightning in the area so they couldn't unload the baggage for another 45 minutes. So I went to rent a car, but I was 21 and didnt have collision insurance on my current car, so I ended up paying $160 for a 36 hour car rental. And they gave me a minivan. And then my flight the morning after my interview was out of Tampa at 6:30am, meaning I was up at 3:45am to get back and return the rental.

Total cost of the trip was somewhere around $650 or so, but strangely enough turned out being worth every penny.

So, to keep with the topic of that crazy guy's post about how crappy DO schools are...

How do you current LECOM-B-ers feel about the quality of your clinical rotations. From what I've read on the SGA website, they seem to be pretty good. But, as I've leaned so well in statistics class, 3 or 4 reviews is NOT a good sample...

Can anyone shed some light on the clinicals? I am particularly interested in the core rotations around Bradenton (i.e. not having to move). Where are you guys planning on doing yours?

I've had a lot of the same questions as ya'all and I actually set up the review section of the SGA website specifically to try to collect information that would be helpful in answering some of these questions for current and future students. In spite of my best efforts and multiple emails, contributions have not been as forthcoming as I would have hoped (one thing you will find in med school is that time becomes very precious and doing non-essential things like posting info on SDN becomes secondary to eating, sleeping and studying...), but it is 20 or so more reviews than we had going in.

There is a class of 2010 board buried somewhere in the SGA site full of our discussions and concerns about rotations. In looking back at it, so many things have changed over the course of two years, that many, if not most, of the discussions and concerns we had do not reflect the present situation with regard to rotations at all. By the time you reach rotations, I would not be surprised at all if the situation had changed considerably again. Presently, I would say that you would have excellent chances of staying within an hour of Bradenton for many, if not most of your rotations - in the future, my guess is that it will only get easier to stay close by.

I think scpod did an excellent job of summarizing where we are at in terms of rotations in this post.

One thing I'm not sure if he mentioned concerns "full-year sites". There are several of these - one is Suncoast Hospital in Largo, FL, one is Florida Hospital East in Orlando. These are only a handful of slots at these sites, so they were randomly distributed to interested students by lottery. Since you asked where we're going, I will share that I will be spending 3rd year at Suncoast. (There goes my anonymity - there's only four of us going, and only one obvious computer nerd in the group...😀)

Actually, I just bought a condo in West Bradenton for $75K. It was originally listed at $89, but as you know we went from a period of having condos and homes selling in record numbers, and now there are many on sale because of the slump. Mine is a 2-bd/1-bth. Look around and work with a real estate agent...

The closer you get to LECOM in Lakewood Ranch, realize you will be spending more on buying a condo... Also, consider whether you are looking on staying or planning on doing rotations in other areas like up north. Two years isn't enough time to see much of a benefit with what you will have to put into your own place plus condo fees have been going up (along with everything else!).

Yep, Bradenton went with hateful unworthy ******ed foolish old thing. I'm waitlisted. Boo.

idiots! they must be delirious! they must have confused you with someone else, that is the only likely explanation for this insanity

Good luck DrMidlife and I hope they de-waitlist you.

Lame. They are on crack. I'm sure the waitlist will move quite a bit. Don't worry. It's still a great school.

Hello everyone,

Like most people out there I'm really a "ghost" reader and have been following most of the posts on this 10+ page thread. Now I've got something to say and that is that I'm having my interview at LECOM-B on Friday, Feb. 1st, and would like to know if anyone will be joining me to do their interviews that day? It would help to break the ice a little I suppose.

I also want to say thanks to everyone on here and that your comments on this thread sure has put me at ease and made me feel really good about interviewing there as well as completely changing my initial ignorant perceptions about it and the area. Kudos to TexasTriathlete and others for recommending I stay at an Econo Lodge. I called to make a reservation like 10 min ago and said I'm interviewing for LECOM-B and he gave me a special rate for saying that. I got a double room for 59 bucks. And I'm a Floridian (from Coral Springs), so I'll be renting a car to get up there.

And to sherruns, who said minimum MCAT LECOM-B they want is a 26...that is just downright wrong because my MCAT is a 24. So it may not mean I'll get accepted but at least I'm happy to know that they want to give me a chance.

Anybody interview here recently?? How was it?? Laid-back or stressful?? What Q did they ask--I tried to check the interview feedback but that is down and my interview is on Monday. I am going to FL early tomorrow am. Any input on what to expect is appreciated!!

Thanks to whoever originally posted this in the interview feedback. These were pretty close to the questions I was asked. #12 is referring to an article you will be given to read, and then will be asked to summarize during the interview.

LECOM – FL Interview Questions

The first question was the tell me something not on your file question.
The rest, in no particular order are:
1. Why osteopathy?
2. Medical school is stressful, how do you relieve yourself of stress.
3. Tell me about your leadership roles, describe.
4. How do you resolve conflict.
5. Tell me about your communication, are you better written or verbal.
6. Strengths (it was worded differently, but I can remember how)
7. After my strengths he said, “and what do you need to work on?”
8. I was asked something about PBL
9. Give an example of when a group approach worked better than an individual.
10. What would be some reasons to choose a D.O over an MD.
11. Have you been treated by a DO.
12. Summarize the article on xxx (it was an easy and interesting read, so don’t sweat it).

That's really too bad, Dr. Midlife. Don't give up though - I know several people who were accepted off the waitlist, some as late as the week before school, so it ain't over 'til it's over.

I just looked at your profile and we definitely need more Northwesterner's down here! Not that I'm biased or anything, being a 'greener grad from Olympia 😀.

I had pretty much the same questions last year so looks like they're keeping with this. From what I've seen lately in the interview feedback it looks like the interviews are closed-file for most, but I thought mine was open-file last year.....

Also, at least for mine, they basically have a sheet that they ask the questions from and write feedback on (with some variation) so while I was answering a question they would be looking down a lot at their paper and writing comments, and once I was done they'd usually move on to a different question with little feedback/conversation. So it was a little hard to judge how I did since it didn't seem like I got a lot of verbal OR non-verbal feedback, but obviously it worked out in the end. So don't get too flustered if you get the similar feeling, it isn't just you.

And I think they've been doing the interviews towards the beginning of the day/morning so the tough part will be over with early and then it's just seeing PBL in action along with a tour and whatever other presentations they have.

Thanks for the input!! I am excited to learn more about the PBL system and LECOM-B is in a beautiful location. I am looking forward to my trip out there!

You'll get to sit in on a PBL group. Each interviewee goes to a different group so you will likely be the only interviewee in your PBL group. It's really cool...all the students are very welcoming, and you can even participate a little if you know anything...I was with some 2nd years, and while everything made sense to me, it was a little out of my league. Very cool though.

The interviews are very relaxed. Same questions as posted above. Don't sweat it. Be yourself...worked for me 😉

i was accepted- got the letter today 🙂 (interviewed on 1/18)

I got accepted too from the 1/18 group too. Haven't decided if I'll go there though.

yeah, i'm not sure if i'll go there yet, but i'm still happy to be accepted 🙂

Oh stop it, Miss I Get To Call Early For My Acceptance Because I'm Going to Hong Kong. I mean, of course, Dr. I Get To...

Hey you shush! You are going to be a doctor too, you just got into Nova!! LB isn't my first choice and Nova isn't yours.. so we are on level playing ground here!

anyone interviewing on 2/8?

Hey there Mike!! I just got home from my interview there today. It was laid back and the interviewers were really nice. We got to see the PBL system at work with some MSII and it looked pretty cool. Hope you will like LECOM-B. The location is FABULOUS!! Good Luck on the 8th:luck:

My interview is tomorrow, and I am pretty nervous. I am still in Austin and will leave to Florida this afternoon. Wish me luck everyone because I really need it, and I hope I can be in the same class as y'all as this school is my top pick.

Hey there all,
New member of sdn---> now MS0 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Extremely excited! Woohoo LECOM!
I wanted to post my stats to let you all know it CAN be done! My AMCAS gpa is about a 2.9 but on AACOMAS its about 3.1. This is my second time applying. When I first applied my MCAT was a 26M. Retook that guy this year for a 33L. I was complete at LECOM Jan 1st, rocked the interview on Jan 18th. Now I'm starring at an acceptance letter!
I'm probably going to decline my other interviews.
Moral of the story-- low GPA can be a bi+ch, but there are ways around doing a post bacc.
I am very excited about LECOM, PBL, FL and the like. Thanks to everyone on this forum for posting so much valuable information.

Congrats on your acceptance! It's a great school. Great job getting it done. I wish I had a 33 MCAT 😱 Hope to see you there.

By chance, has anyone received a phone call this week for an interview invitation?
