LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ok, questions questions

a) Where did everyone stay? any recommendations? A few people have mentioned the Econo Lodge, but I can be a bit of a pre-madonna about living atmosphere, so I am not sure. I also would like to have a fridge. Has anyone stayed at the Comfort Suites?

b)Who flew into tampa? How difficult was it? How long was the drive to Bradenton? an hour like they say or longer/shorter?

Thanks all, I"m so looking forward to seeing the sun again!

I stayed at the Hampton Inn. Don't remember if they have a fridge...I've also stayed at the Holiday Inn near Siesta Key in Sarasota, and they DO have a fridge, but it's a bit of a trek to the school from there...probably 20-30 minutes in traffic...I'd just stay at the Hampton...it was nice.

Fly into Sarasota (SRQ) if you can. I did. It wasn't any more expensive. I had a connector in Charlotte then flew into SRQ and got a rental car. It was very, very quick and easy. It's not a busy airport, but it's pretty nice, I thought.

The drive from Tampa is about an hour, barring a bad accident or something, which can happen on I75. At my interview, a guy was late b/c of traffic. I don't think they held it against him though. Wonder if he got in?

I can tell you which hotel to avoid.

The Days-Inn in "Historic Bradenton" It's attached to an IHOP and the rooms were deplorable. The light in my bathroom didnt work and there was a sticky mess from a coke that had spilled that wasnt cleaned up.

Nice front desk clerk tho - she stayed on the phone giving directions and helped me get to the place when I was lost.

I flew into SRQ and it was very easy, about 20mins from the hotel. I stayed at the Hampton Inn, there was no fridge.. which I thought was the only problem as I stayed there 2 nights.. I didn't have a chance to have the breakfast they serve because one was before my interview (too much nerves to eat!) and I left at 5am the next day before it was served. I heard it was good, though. I left via Tampa airport because I had another interview so I didn't book a round trip. I thought I was going to miss my flight because I got to the airport TWO hours after I left.. there was a terrible accident on I75 blocking 4 of 5 lanes right in front of the airport exit.. but there was hardly a security once in Tampa and I flew right through the airport to catch my flight (without having to run!).

ok, this is helpful you guys, It really stinks being on the westcoast, makes everything more difficult!! I'm having a hard time finding a flight that costs less that $1200

Are you doing priceline or anything? That is horrible.

You could run there.

By the way, with my trip, I found that it was cheaper to fly into tampa and rent a compact car than it was to fly into sarasota and save a little on the drive into bradenton.

Look at www.kayak.com. I've had good luck there. Usually I find an available flight on kayak and then book directly through the airline's website. Looks like USAir has redeyes through Vegas for as low as $239.

It all depends on the deals you can find, but for my trips, usually SRQ is way more expensive than Tampa. You can also try St. Pete airport. It's pretty small, but you can occasionally find some good deals there, esp on Allegiant Air.

HOOWEE! Just got my interview invite for March 26! I'm completely stoked!
Can't believe it!!!! I'm coming from Nevada so it's pricey, but I found a round trip on ORBITZ for $460.00. It's $70 one way for a shuttle to take you to hotel, so I'll prolly do that instead of drive. Would rather spend time in contemplation, calming down, rather than in getting lost trying to find LECOM.
GOSH I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE AN INTERVIEW HERE TOO! I'm just awestruck!

Guys,

I went into my PCP to get all the vaccines and found out that I might be needing more than I thought I would. I will probably be finishing up shots still once I'm down in FL so it's a pain in the butt! Get to your doc's office today before it's too late! Some shots have to have a waiting period of 3-6 months in between each!

I second this! I had my three shot series for Hep B right before I started college. Well according to my titer I am not immune. So I have to have a booster and repeat titer in 6-8 weeks. If at that point I am still not immune I have to repeat the series. So it will be awhile before I am cleared!

Actually, I am going to Vegas this spring break to interview for TUCOM Nevada and maybe gamble a little so I can win back some $ to make up for application fees and interview expenses. Common Lady Luck!!

will you put in a quarter for me, I could use to win some money back too! If I get accepted I'm going to have a 'send me to medical school' garage sell to make enough money for my deposit. I will also have a "LauraDO Fun Run" and place Jars with my picture on them in all of the local grocery stores for people to donate their change to.

also just talked to whole foods and I'm going to be their charity that those little wood nickels will go to

Look at USA3000 airlines (USA3000.com). They don't fly out of alot of airports, but they fly into both Sarasota (SRQ) and St. Petes (PIE). From Chicago they are about $200 round trip when major airlines are running around $500 now. If you can find a cheap flight into one of the cities that they fly from (Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Detriot, etc) you may find a combined cheaper flight. Their flight times are always late night, and you always have to wait forever if you check bags, but it's cheap.

Also, if you do ever fly with them, you can always find discount codes online. I got $10 off each way with a code I found.

We stayed in St. Petes, and got a great deal at a Marriott that had just opened. It was about 45 min from LECOM though, so I had to wake up very early to make sure I got there and was ready, but it was really nice to go back and relax by the beach afterwards!

you always have to wait forever if you check bags, but it's cheap.

Just a hint: I know it's a little harder for you girls, but don't check your bags when going to an interview if you can help it.

I carry-on'd (is that how you do that...or is it carried-on...or carried-on-ded-ed...oh well, whatever) my suit bag, and my North Face backpack (stuffed to the gills, of course) and had everything I needed.

Made my life SOOO much easier, and worry free.

You guys have been so helpful, I really appreciate. My biggest problem is I have no flexibility. I have a O-chem test on Wed. from 9-10 am, have to fly cross country, interview on Friday and be back for finals mon, tues, wed.

I think I have figured out a way to steal, beg and borrow miles from my family and friends in order to have enough to pay for the flight using miles. So lets hope that works

I had to call five hotels before I found one with an opening, but finally got in to the comfort suites. So things are falling into place.

I am becoming more and more excited. I've been looking forward to being able to experience this school and pbl for a long time, I can't believe I finally have the opportunity. How long did it take to hear back after your interview?

They're really quick getting back to you...I heard in less than 2 wks.

Have you tried talking to your teachers? Mine were really understanding about interviews, and worked with me to make it more bearable. They know how important it is!

This is soooo true! I just returned from Mississippi from visiting my sis, and ofcourse was running late, so I didn't have time to check my bag. Best thing that happened, my first flight ran late so I literally had to run to my connecting flight and just made it. My bags never would have 😱!

And, my bag was too big to fit in overhead compartment, so right before you get on I left it with stewardess, who had it stored someplace, and on my way off the plane, there it was just sitting there waiting for me. Was pretty fab!

Yes, this is a novel idea, and I do carry on if I am flying on my own. However, this rarely ever happens any longer, and on my particular trip to Florida, I had my husband and three kids with me. You would have laughed at all of the crap that we had to take with us (we checked 10 items - including two carseats and a portable crib). I used to work for United, and would travel frequently with one little carry on bag for the week. Those were the days!

I really admire you and everyone else going through this process with kids and a family. Honestly it is all I can do to keep on top of myself, little less having to deal with three little ones to keep me accountable!

I actually find it easier WITH a family...you'd be surprised how much help, support, and motivation they can give you.

That is true, I guess it balances out in the end, my cat isn't really good at having an empathetic ear 🙂

I'll just have to petition for LECOM sanctioned pom poms, I"m sure they will understand the need

"Dear LECOM-B,

I love you. You're so pretty. Call me!

Love,
Dr. Midlife"

I've been trying to pen a LOI and am struggling to find those inspired words that will pull me off the waitlist. Was going to ramble about how they had me @ PBL etc., but Dr. Midlife is much more elegant and succinct. suggestions appreciated. seems like it's going to be a great incoming class! (and I know Dr. Midlife will be in it, not to jinx you)

...(and I know Dr. Midlife will be in it, not to jinx you)..

Just, people, just please stay out of Illinois. I ask so little. I mean, if you're there right now, no, you don't have to leave, but it's just so clear that this is what's keeping me on the waitlist. Everybody who has EVER been to Illinois gets accepted, except me. If you haven't been to Illinois yet, just hold off and give me a chance to get in. It'll be worth it, I'm a good classmate: I make killer cheesecake. You have a choice: you DON'T have to connect your flight through Chicago. Atlanta and DFW are lovely, lovely airports with excellent amenities.

And as soon as I'm accepted, then you have a green light and my blessing. Go see a Cubs game, or ChiSox, eat some brats, walk through a cornfield or two, get a colonoscopy at Northwestern, visit your grandmother, do it up. I promise the jinx will still be in force after I'm admitted, that ALL YOU HAVE TO DO to be accepted at LECOM-B is GO TO ILLINOIS.

Just not right now.

Maybe you have to actually live in IL. My husband and I are both from there and we both got rejected pretty quickly in October. I guess the charm of being Illinoisans wore off in LECOM-B's eyes. Here in DFW we do have a pretty nice airport but right now IT'S SNOWING!!!!!! 😀 Sorry but I had to fit that in somewhere.

I am not from Illinois and I have never, ever been anywhere near it. I got in no problem...there is hope.

Chris btw is a huge HARD rock fan. He wants his music to sound more like Tool...we'll see the AI fans like that now that he has some control over his music.

If he sounds more like tool then I may actually listen to it. I'm NOT from the same area as you are, but my sentiments are the same. The music industry is an odd thing. It is more about marketing than quality and talent lately. Oh well.

I have no real input to this thread. Maybe I'll see you guys on campus next fall since I am applying there though.

Dr. Midlife, you are welcome to come and stay with me in Illinois for a while if you think that it will help your chances! I really think that they just feel bad for us with the -35 windchills that we havd last month!

There's a great outlet mall near LECOM-B...just so you know...

And, it's only about 4 hours from Miami, which is a fashion capital (with prices to match).

^^ actually, when I was down there for my interview I went to the outlet mall!! 🙂 I love shopping no matter what.

Yeah, I saw the outlets driving, and I have to say that it was a nice relief to see! I can live there now!

Ran Chicago Marathon. twice. should count for something...yet I'm still waitlisted...and plagued by feelings of loneliness/depression and periodic bouts of quiet crying.
