LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yipee, i got accepted! Interviewed Feb 20th, got the acceptance a couple of days ago, and i'm sending in the deposit tommorrow!

I was very impressed with the school, especially their test scores. And having gone to USF and feeling very comfortable with the area, i'm almost certain I will go here, unless i'm absolutely blown away at other interviews.

I think they do a good job introducting PBL and the students seem so enthusiastic about it. Of course, it has it's drawbacks but it seems so suitable for me. (and fun)

Good luck to everyone waiting to here back from them. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I hear the waitlist has good movement, you just have to be patient. A lady at the interview told me that they accepted 65 students out of 100, or so, on the waitlist. And even one of the students we ate lunch with said he didn't get accepted until a couple of weeks before orientation, so don't give up!

Congrats rturner!!! must be a great feeling

I know I've seen this somewhere but how big is the class going to be?

I think our class is between ~150-160.

Thanks, does that feel big to you? or is it not bad because you all are split up with the pbl groups?

Ran Chicago Marathon. twice. should count for something...yet I'm still waitlisted...and plagued by feelings of loneliness/depression and periodic bouts of quiet crying.

I think you need more endorphins. Go running!

Clearly it's not as simple as I thought. Hmm, we need LauraDO and Sherruns to get their results before I can rejigger the decision matrix. Given that TexasTri and I both got waitlisted, I expect it's this:

Lets hope it goes something like this

Named LauraDO--> accepted!

Not named LauraDO----> negotiable

Lovin that decision matrix, although here are a few real-life suggestions:

been to illinois - runs marathons - yes - waitlisted briefly
been through illinois - ran too many marathons and now runs half marathons - yes - accepted

been to illinois - do triathlons - yes - waitlisted forever
been through illinois - did triathlons and got swam over too many times so now does half marathons - yes - accepted

been to illinois - skinny dip - yes - waitlisted forever
been through illinois - chunky dunk - yes - accepted

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

anyone interview late last week and here anything yet? I'm getting anxious!

Well, it's definitely the smallest school/class size I've been in. After a large public high school and a large state university this feels pretty small.

During lectures everyone is together, and for anatomy and OMM labs the class is basically split it half. And then during PBL you're with your small group and you'll probably get to know them pretty well. But especially towards the end of anatomy most people tend to settle into their respective groups of friends that they study with. You may have your closest group of friends but overall everyone is pretty good about socializing with each other and we all kind of have the feeling that we're in this together so let's make the best of it.

But even now in the middle of the 2nd semester there's probably only a few people that I actually haven't really talked to yet.

I interviewed the last week of February, and I got my acceptance letter today. The letter was post marked March 6 and I received it March 8. (BTW, I live in California). You should hear from them soon, if not already..good luck!

Digit....I was just listening to your band and I'm totally impressed! How long have you all been together, are they bummed that you are leaving?

ran chicago marathon. twice...became injured...gave up running...swallowed manhood and took up yoga? ð waitlisted for unspecified period

Thanks! Glad you like it! I'll give you a disc when classes start...We've been together for around 3 years or so...yeah they're bummed...

I'm going to stay in touch as a "creative consultant" and do what I can from a distance...but the reality is that we're all getting a little to "old" to be considered marketable by the industry...bastards 😀

What do you play? There's a few of us here currently who keep talking about getting together to jam but just haven't had the time yet. That and I don't have a drum set here with me, oh well.

The industry does really suck the few good ones that get through are anomalies unfortunately. I lived in Nashville for quite sometime and really got to see the good the bad and the ugly of the music industry. Its amazing how much better most of the 'unknown' groups are then those that make it.

If you are from Charlottesville you must know of the pat mcgee band? I have been a huge pat mcgee fan since college

Mostly guitar and drums. A little piano...other stuff not as well, but I can get by...

LauraDO: yes, I know Pat McGee band...I've met some of them at times...tragedy what happened to their drummer...pretty good though. I was sorry they never made it farther.

Coran Capshaw is the manager of Dave Matthews and has systematically ruined the careers of dozens of Va bands. He's had one great success with DMB and dozens of terrible failures, including Pat's.

Ok, so I"m staying at the Comfort Suites. A few questions.

a) is this a safe area? would it be safe for me to go running around the area the morning before my interview and while i'm there. Also, I know I saw a link to a fairly nice health club posted, is this anywhere near here?

b) Good grocery stores? Whole foods? anything like that around?

c) I"m going to be there from late Wed night to Sunday midday, I am going to have to be studying for finals for a much of that time, but I would also like to see the area. Any place in particular I should go? see? not go?

So basically I'm asking for you all to be my concierges.....Thanks in advanced

I found the whole area very pretty and safe. At least around the school and beaches.

Publix. There's two on the same street as the school. One north of the school and one to the south. About 1 mile each way. Good place.

I would definitely make time to go the the beach. Siesta Key in Sarasota is one of the best beaches in the world. Rated #1 many times by many different travel people. If you're into art, the Ringling museum of art is there...

St. Armand's Circle in Sarasota was really cool too. Nice shops and stuff. I spent most of my interview time looking at houses and neighborhoods. I came back over x-mas break and looked at more.

So basically I'm asking for you all to be my concierges.....Thanks in advanced

No problem!

Thanks that is exactly what I was looking for. Did you end up finding a place to live? I will have to get a good idea when I am there as well since I will not be able to go back until school starts

(see how I am assuming I have already been accepted- I will overwhelm them with my irresistible charm and they will have no choice but to accept me!)

I have a general idea of where we would like to live...Definitely in the "Lakewood Ranch" area...maybe not in LR proper, but around there...

Lots of nice houses and neightborhoods.

Just relax and be yourself. It was a very, very nice day.

Good luck this week!

Since you'll be staying several days take a little time to look around some. The area you're staying in is pretty nice so you shouldn't have a problem running. If it's the one I'm thinking of (off of University) then it's off a main roadway so may not be a lot to see right there when running, but you could always drive a couple minutes easy and up Lakewood Ranch Blvd and run around there. Lots of nice neighborhoods and such. Very residential.

I don't think we have any Whole Foods, but like digitlnoize said there's a Publix right before you get to the school (corner of SR-70 and Lakewood Ranch Blvd) that's brand new and pretty nice. There a few Sweet Bays scattered around. One on SR-70 right near the I-75 exit there. There's several good restaurants right where you'll be on University and that corner there by Lakewood Ranch Blvd. There's a pretty good breakfast type place right off University (right past I-75) called "The Broken Egg" that's good. And if you're a Dick Vitale fan he usually eats breakfast and sits outside there reading most mornings. Also several restaurants up on Main Street, kind of the small-town "downtown" area of Lakewood Ranch off Lakewood Ranch Blvd, including a real good sushi place some of us go to occasionally.

That's also where Starbucks is.....if you venture by there you'll probably see at least several of us studying there at any given time.

But, I agree, if you have the time go check out the beaches. I've actually only been to the beach once since I've started, though I'm a native Floridian and have plenty of time at beaches.

If you want any more convincing, or just want to enjoy a nice sunset......

Our first semester about a dozen of us had a big Thanksgiving dinner over on one of the Bradenton beaches. Was probably one of the most relaxing and fun days we had.

Just looking at a map, if it's the Comfort Inn on University, you should be fine. This area is very suburban - lots of shopping centers, etc.

There's a Whole Foods in downtown Sarasota. You can check out mainstreet while you're down there - lots of restaurants, book stores, etc.

If you go south from the school on Lakewood Ranch Blvd., you'll come to Mainstreet Lakewood Ranch, which also has some restaurants and shopping. There's a "gourmet" market there called Morton's that's a good place to get lunch or coffee and sit outside.

As far as things to see, the beach tops the list, IMO. You can park around St. Armand's get an ice cream cone at "Big Olaf's" and walk out on the beach.

It'll probably be pretty crowded at this time of year, but it really empties out after Easter or so.

There's some more info here that might be of interest as well.

Wow, thanks you all, this is fabulous! Yes, I am sure the beach will be my #1 destination, I can tell you I am going to have to drag myself kicking and screaming to get on the airplane to go back to rainy Portland to take my finals

And then to find out that not only do I get to interview at a incredible school and go to the beach, but I also might get a chance to see Dick Vitale???? I shouldn't be this lucky!

If any of you current students need a good distraction next week I am more than wiling to fill that role, I'd love to take anyone that has free time out to coffee or lunch or whatever, just pm me!

Thanks again

.....Dick I'm coming...............

Sadly, the Morton's there in Lakewood Ranch is now closed. I think the parent company or whoever sold off part of them and they closed a bunch of stores.

I've heard rumors of possibly a bookstore being thought about for the location. I hope it's something like that with some study space at least.

Wow, really? I guess it's been a couple months since I've been there. That's surprising; I thought that place was pretty new.

Edit: I guess they were there for a year and a half. Apparently the pinch is not just in the housing market anymore...

does anyone know what time the adcom meets on tuesdays and when would be a good time to call them?

does anyone know what time the adcom meets on tuesdays and when would be a good time to call them?

Are you thinking they'll put you on speakerphone, let you plead your case? That doesn't happen. The only tool at your disposal after you've interviewed is the LOI, and maybe calling June Flaim with questions.

nop, but i'd like to know when they are done so i can call the school and see if i got in or not.

hey all -

does anyone have any experience with the HPSP programs (specifically Air Force)? i'm seriously considering it and i'm tryna get some more info. i know there's a separare military board, but it would be kinda nice to get in touch with someone else at bradenton who could shed some more light on the pros/cons/etc...

thanks

If I am accepted I will be doing the Air Force HPSP (everything is all ready to go and just waiting on the acceptance letter)

I couldn't answer questions you have specifically about hpsp and bradenton, but I could answer general AF HPSP questions

nop, but i'd like to know when they are done so i can call the school and see if i got in or not.

I do not think that is a good idea. Please remember that they are extremely busy right now and I don't think that

a) they would be able to tell you right away since normally after the admissions committee meets there is a process that they go through to verify acceptances

b) they would be thrilled to have thousands of pre-meds calling them constantly asking about their fate

I could be wrong.....but...

nop, but i'd like to know when they are done so i can call the school and see if i got in or not.

Yeah, IMHO it's pretty unacceptable.

They tell you specifically to NOT contact the office of admissions unless you have a change in your status or contact info. Unless you have special circumstances (like you'll be out of the area for a while...) they don't want you to call asking them if you got in. When they're ready they'll tell you! 😀

Good Luck tho.

Wow, so I"m not even there yet and I am so demanding

So, I had all of my suits at home, since, well Portland isn't really a suit town (especially when you are going to school) and I simply didn't have room in my closet for them. So my mom sent two of my favorites along with shoes, the whole shebang express mail across country, suppose to arrive today at noon (I leave tomorrow at 8am)

Well, supposedly the package was delivered but it has disappeared between the time delivered and the time I arrived home to look for it.

So no suit, no shoes, no nada.....Now I have debated going in the buck, to really stand out and let them know that I am comfortable with the human form. However I am rather cold natured and I am afraid that I will be too cold to really do my best....so this means on thursday I need to buy a suit somewhere.

Where to go? I dont have time to search around aimlessly, I will pay whatever to get something that is presentable. Help!

try the outlet mall by the Hampton Inn in Bradenton.. they seemed to have places that had suits and shoes and stuff...

ps. if you live in the dorms, does school sign for packages for you.. i know mine did.. and they were always a little slow.. or go bug the post office.. or something.. that is crazy.

Normally, I'd say this would be a good idea....you know....since I'm all into freedom of experession and stuff....but it CAN get a little chilly first thing in the morning. However, you would stand out amongst the other applicants...so...if you feel you must.... I'm all for it. 😀

😆 The pictures you sent with your secondaries combined with a nude showing are sure to get you in!! 😉

I went nekkid to my interview, and apparently, it happens all the time. They had an extra suit in the closet for me.

I think it was too late though. I had already lost some points, because they keep the A/C turned way up in that little room.

😆 The pictures you sent with your secondaries combined with a nude showing are sure to get you in!! 😉

Well maybe but going nude really puts a kink in the striptease act i had prepared for mid interview 🙁

You could still surprise them with a naked lap dance.

Two words: body paint 👍

well I'll need help applying it, so.........you know I"m begining to think that I can use the coldness to my advantage 😉

Wow, I'm just imagining one of the interview committee members reading this and getting very anxious for this weeks interviews!! Agreed that it would definately set you apart in their minds, however I'm not sure if it meets the dress code standards. You may not make it past security.

I would say the outlet mall is a good bet. We have the same chain of outlet by me, and I found suits at several stores that would have worked.

Good luck, let us know how it goes!!

Actually I was just thinking, 'I hope no LECOM B adcom peeps are reading this'

I was just looking at the outlet's website! BCBG! I'll be fine.....maybe broke (or should I say broke-er) but I think I'll find something

Thanks Kate,

so it looks like your CCOM interview went well are you having second thoughts on LECOM-B?
