So, does anyone know of anybody that has a room for rent for the rest of the school year out there? My husband is interviewing now for a few different jobs, and they could start as early as next week! I can't go out until the summer, but he will have to go now I guess.
 
Does anybody know whether the alternate list has began to move yet? I really like the odds here at Bradenton since last year about 60% of people got off the list.
 
This is sort of off-topic for this thread and not something the incoming 1st-years need to worry about, but since the discussion was started...as a 4th-year I have to agree with fightingirish about Histo, and actually go further and say I found it to be almost a complete waste of time when it comes to boards.

I agree with focusing on material that is high-yield for boards.

Yes, PBL tests are harder than COMLEX. USMLE is a very different test than COMLEX as well (more basic science, more difficult, more biochem/molecular bio, better written).

It may, in fact, be a waste of some time for the boards, but they have changed several things about PBL tests from the time that you took them. One is the addition of anatomy/histo/embryo questions to your second year tests, in addition to the normal case and topic questions. If you don't read the histo, you'll be lost, IMO.

Additionaly, some people can survive perfectly well for two years memorizing high yield facts. I'm just not one of them. I do look at the high yield stuff in order to determine which things I should spend more time on-- and that's it. I've seen too many people,though, that relied heavily on it in my class. That's part of the reason why we started with 162 people and now have 153. They fell by the wayside. Be careful with how much time you spend on it.

Fair enough re:histo.
As far as high-yield, what I meant by that was just high-yield subjects (path, phys, pharm, micro). Not just bullet points. Agree about focusing only on memorizing facts.

Yet, some people try to do that. I saw one guy in first year, on many occassions, taking notes from baby Robbins. Baby Robbins IS just notes. I'm not sure what happened to him.
 
I have to say, I'm slightly intimidated by all of these books. How do you know which ones are good resources? Will someone tell us this once we get to lecom? I.e.: get robbins (the book mentioned above), or get this or that. I assume there are books lecom recommends you to get, but some of the "note"-type review books I'm thinking they will not tell you about?

Search SDN, there's many threads on what review books people recommend. I listed my own favorites earlier. You'll also see as you go along which books you like because your classmates will have all different ones that you can check out.
 
I love that "Top 3 books as an OMS1&2" thread, I looked into everyone's input and purchased about 15 books that the majority of people agreed on. I'm so excited now. I've been skeeming the Robbins book and it's really easy to read and fun actually! Check that thread out! Anyway, can't wait to meet all of you guys in FL in July!

so i found out today i qualified for an AF HPSP scholarship and i'm trying to decide whether to accept it or not. have any of you talked with the financial aid office about loans/grants? does lecom offer need-based grants or solely student loans?

I'm Kateb4 on facebook also, but there is another Kate that just added everyone to her friends list (I got that one yesterday also), so that's her. I have no idea how to use facebook, I just know how to accept the friend requests, so if anyone wants to be my friend you have to add me!

I was VERY impressed with the financial aid officer at LECOM-B. In your shoes, I'd try to get her on the phone to sort things out and get some solid advice.

The general consensus on SDN is that if you're not excited about the military, then taking their money isn't worth it.

Agreed, I am most likely going to do the AF scholarship, what you need to ask yourself is "if there was no money involved would I still want to do this" My answer is yes, what is yours?

And for the record I think it is hilarious that Kate and Laura can do everything it takes to get into medical school yet you cannot find each other on facebook. I'm so looking forward to having classes with you two.😛

I'm not really of the facebook/my space generation, so I really have had no need to join before. I'm working on it, and I really can do things when I need to. Believe me, you will be sad when you don't have class with us anymore!

Official info comes via mail, or more likely, email. If you keep these up to date with student affairs, you'll get everything you need. The SGA website is student run, and although we work with student affairs, our purpose is to serve as the official "unofficial" place to discuss housing, student life, notes, etc.

There will be an official book list that will be emailed to you. Last year it came out around mid-May.


I'm sure you guys will grow weary of me posting links to the SGA boards, but I think if you poke around, you'll find that a lot of the questions you probably have have been asked before in one way or another.

How do you guys (and the facilitators) feel about ebooks? I couldn't help but notice, at my interview, how many pounds of books you guys lugged to the PBL sessions. Just seems like having a laptop with all the books on it would be easier. I love them my self. Depending on the format, I will sometimes print them out for home reading if they're short enough. What's the word on this?

I would say it's more personal preference. As far as when you're actually in a PBL session there maybe a few facilitators who like to see you using "real" books and aren't that fond of computers because they think we're only "Googling" the answer.

But there are a bunch of us who have a lot of the books on PDF, plus some of the books let you sign up online to access them that way as well.

That said, I like having an actual book to read from. Easier for me to flip back and forth to look at charts/figures than try and scroll or click to a different page. Also, my eyes would absolute hate me and just up and leave me if I tried to read from a computer screen all the time.

I know it's not "cool", and I'm definitely not the only one, but I use one of those small rolling suitcases and keep all my books in there and then pretty much just leave it in the car. So where ever I'm studying I have access to all my books and then I'll wheel it into school.

Besides the issues about google/wiki being questionable sources of info...

It's hard to explain, but laptops really change the group dynamics in a session, and not in a good way. If everyone has a computer in front of them, the session tends to turn into a bunch of people sitting around looking at their computers rather than a discussion. It's also usually much faster to look things up in actual books. Most facilitators will strongly encourage no more than one or two laptops in a session.
 
Yeah, first semester when we first started "doing" PBL several of us would have our laptops out. But now, at least in my current group, it's rare that we'll take a computer out. Usually it's for when there's just some little thing that we know we aren't going to find in the books or to lookup some image or something.

I think that's a pretty common pattern. At first it seems like the answer you need must be "out there" somewhere, but as time goes on you start to realize that most of the issues you're grappling with are more about a certain thought process rather than just finding raw facts. More "why" than "what". And computers don't help with that...

I have no problem not using google/wiki...I just don't wanna buy a "real" book if I already have the e-book...I actually find I can find things easier in an e-book because of the search feature...

Eh, you'll figure out what works for you. Like I say, most facilitators will allow a laptop or two in each group. All I know is that even though I have pdf's of most of our texts, I'd still rather haul them to PBL... it's a little upperbody workout, in any case...😛

Edit: I guess I should get used to talking about PBL in the past tense, since I just finished my LAST PBL SESSION EVER! 😀
 
Hey guys, I heard something about a brand new apartment complex being built within a mile of the school. Is that true and if so is it going to be completed before school starts this year?

After a while you'll know where everything is in your books and won't have to worry about starting up the laptop, running low on batteries, a slow connection, etc. I don't even carry my laptop to PBL anymore (of course, like Dragonwell, I no longer have to go to PBL, YAY!!!) but I'll bring my PDA if I want to look up anything on the net. Lugging around a laptop is a pain when you study in groups because it's easier to just toss a book to someone, and you can't draw in the margins and make notes...etc.

I have copies of some books on .pdf that I use whenever I don't have a book with me, but I like to relax by my pool and read on the sofa or in bed a lot. The laptop just gets in the way.

Ok, guys this is going to sound sort of stupid but is there anywhere we can order LECOM gear, like maybe pens, pencils, notebooks, t-shirts, maybe even Key chains??? I have the one pen from interview day, and everytime I look at it it makes me happy, I would love to have more stuff!

Throughout the year different clubs will sell things like t-shirts, pants, and sweatshirts. Haven't really seen some of the other stuff, though one of the clubs just did a fundraiser selling LECOM coffee mugs.

Don't you have to take the COMLEX to graduate or something...or is LECOM-B awesome in this area too?

You can get away with just taking the USMLE?
