I think he meant to say "None of the MD residencies I'm thinking about require USMLE"...you must take COMLEX to be licensed as a DO. Taking USMLE only is not an option.

Well that's good to hear. It's what I'm currently leaning to at this point. If you do some local EM rotations you'll have to be sure to post some reviews up on the SGA site.

I think he meant none of the MD EM residencies require USMLE...that would make more sense.

Apparently, a lot of us at Bradenton are. 2008 matched 14 (7-AOA and 7-ACGME) in EM. That's just about 10% of the class. Most places reserve EM rotations for 4th years, but I found a level-one trauma center in PA that has a specific rotation for third-years, so I decided to do that in October and get some early exposure. I'll start hitting a bunch of them next May. I was a little bummed that they changed the EM club meetings this year to 5:30 because I couldn't make any of them, but it's still my first choice right now. Don't worry....I'll keep you informed about rotations 🙂.
 
Scpod, Dragonwell: I am so excited about PBL that it sounds sad that you'll be done with it. Do you guys have any nostalgia for it?

Well, I've definitely enjoyed a lot of the interactions I've had with fellow students and with faculty I've worked with. The shared experience of PBL seems to bind people together in a way that sharing space in a lecture hall doesn't. I also love learning the basic science, the "why" of everything.

All in all, though, I'm ready to move on. PBL cases are interesting, but I'm sure it's nothing like what working with real patients will be like in a couple months. I wouldn't have wanted to stretch these two years out any longer. The pace is intense, but there is so much info to learn and hold on to that by the time two years is up, you've started to loose some things you learned in first year. So, for me at least, there is definitely a strong desire to go ahead and take the boards while my knowledge is at it's peak, so to speak.

I'm also pretty open-minded about what I might actually want to do specialty-wise, so I'm anxious to start trying some rotations on and seeing what fits. Where I'll be rotating next year has some pretty interesting residencies and fellowships, so I'm hoping something will strike me and I can start planning the next phase of this crazy adventure a bit more. 😀
 
I have a question for current LECOM-B students... How is the OMM lab? How far do students have to go in terms of palpitating others? I only ask because I was reading another thread where some student mentioned that at their school they had to deal with the groin and breast area. I don't have a problem with that. I'd just like a little heads up 🙂 So any ideas?

You do get up close and personal with fellow students, but nothing outrageous. I'm not aware of any problems or issues anyone here has had so far.

You'll have to palpate the pubic symphysis which just above the "groin" area, but not extremely invasive per se. The breast area was probably when doing ribs and feeling for rib movement. If you're palpating the ribs along the sternal border you're right in the breast area and it just depends on who your partner is. The girls could cup themselves to "lift and separate" but for the most part I'd probably say that guys stuck with guys and girls with girls for that one. Though it is good to get a variety of experience on different body types, and some girls may not mind. That was probably the trickiest area to avoid some of the personal areas.

There's also the sacrum but it's not that bad. And it's in the 2nd semester so by that point everyone is pretty much comfortable enough in lab and you'll probably have a few friends that you generally work with to learn on first.

You will have to "deal" with these areas at any school, in some way or another. 😉

There are a couple OMM techniques that require you to work around some of the pubic bones, and a couple that require palpation of the chest. Notice I say chest, as in thoracic cage - palpation of breast tissue is not involved. It really is no big deal, at least IMO, as it's quite clear EXACTLY where your hands should be...it's not like you're just wandering around your partner's anatomy. I should also add these techniques are a pretty small percentage of what you'll learn.

Breast exams and male/female GU exams are learned on standardized patients.

It's important to note, too, that any time we are taught techniques that involve the breast, like the lymphatic pump for example, we are taught a different way to do them on females. There's no getting around some techniques that involve the ischeal spine; you'll be touching someone's butt, but you won't be grabbibg it and massaging it or anything. The supine treatment for bilateral sacral extension or flexion seems kind of invasive, but we didn't really didn't even do that until 2nd year. By then most people were pretty comfortable being touched. Then, there's always treating the pelvic diaphragm. One slip of the thumb and you could be somehere "special". That puts new meaning in the words "trust" your partner 🙂.

I'm glad I can be of some help. It's great to see such comradery among your class already. Before you know it you guys will be finishing second year and helping out the incoming class yourselves.

Props to nlax30, fighting irish and all the other LECOM-B students posting here as well. They are the closest to what you guys are about to experience, so definitely listen to their advice. 👍

I second that one! Also, thanks for being so kind to us interviewees when we sat in on the PBL sessions! I'll have to remember to be nice when those kiddos come to sit in on my sessions now!

Also remember recording songs from the radio to make a mix tape! I have been going thru stuff in my basement since we're trying to sell the house. I found a box full of old casette tapes, a few of them were the ones that I made for friends and my husband when we first started dating, good times.
 
How long did it take everyone to get word back following interviews? I interviewed on the 28th, and they said it would take some time since it's almost the end of the interviewing season, but I'm going crazy waiting! 😱

I wouldn't worry I interviewed on the 14th and got a phone call but still have not recieved a letter

I think they are simply incredibly busy! hang in there I know how it feels

I myself am a Neil Diamond girl! I begged my parents to take me to his concerts whenever he played within 100 miles of where we lived. I had been to 3 Neil Diamond concerts before I was 11

Some may call it an obsession? Deep down though, I always knew Neil was singing to me

I got you all beat. Milli Vanilli. It belonged to my parents. It did. Really.

My earliest memories are of singing "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benetar and "Karma Chameleon" by Culture Club in my carseat in my mom's old El Camino with it's 8-track player. Ahhhh...good times. 😀

I have to do that. Most of my collection pre-high school was casette tapes though. I did re-buy some of the good ones on CD like Chicago and Journey. I just need to get some time together to start ripping!

My husbands parents were very young when they had him, so he grew up with them and listened to their music alot. I thought he was such a dork becuase he liked Peter Frampton. He was really excited and wanted to go to their concert when we were dating, and I had to put my foot down. (sorry, not big on Frampton)

I am proud to say that I always hated NKOTB. I couldn't stand their dancing or songs...blah...

Some CD ripping advice:

If you guys are ripping music, PLEASE PLEASE make sure that whatever program you're using to do it is set to rip at AT LEAST 192kb/sec. If you can, do it at 320kb/sec.

In iTunes, this setting can be changed by going to: Edit-->Preferences--Advanced (Tab)-->Importing (another tab in the advanced tab)--> 3rd drop down menu (Setting)-->Custom, then change it to 320 (or whatever you want).

Default is 128kbs which sounds like crap. This is also the default used at the iTunes store (a BIG reason I don't buy stuff there).

At 320kb/sec, I can't tell the difference between the mp3 and a CD...even on a great system...and I'm really picky about my sound.

Dr MidLife--- I was just listening to my Prince CD the other day while cleaning my house!!! Ofcourse, had to do the "Prince" walk during when Dove's Cry 😀. Don't laugh you guys, I know u look silly at home too when no one's looking...

Oh! And Bon Jovi is coming in concert this month to Tampa--- if my sister is home we will soooooo not miss that. She went to the Journey concert last year and she said it was the faboulest live!

Yeah, I saw this a while back and was really bummed that it's before I'll be in Florida...Daughtry's opening...if I hear from them, I'll try and score you some tickets...they're busy though, so don't count on it...

If you're looking at LECOM-B, first get your brain around the idea of PBL. Some people love it, some people hate it, and it's all there is at LECOM-B. In a nutshell, there are almost no lectures, and you meet in small groups with a facilitator, and then you're largely on your own to learn the material from textbooks.

Edit: see nlax below, I'm on crack. First semester at this school you're in a full day of anatomy lecture and (prosected) lab, and a little PBL. After that, other than a lecture hour here and there, you're in PBL sessions for 2 hours, 3 days a week for the rest of your preclinical years.

Varies depending on the day and semester. The first 10 weeks is filled with traditional anatomy lecture and lab so you'll pretty much be at school all day for the most part.

Once anatomy ends and normal PBL takes over you have a 2hr PBL session on Monday, Wed, and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays is when you have other stuff like Clinical Exam lecture and lab, OMM lecture and lab, and then any "mini-course" lectures (stuff like Ethics, Public Health, etc...) So Mondays, Wed, and Fridays you usually only have to be here 2hrs for PBL, Tuesdays and Thursdays can either be short or long depending on if you have mini-course lectures, or other things on the schedule.
