LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm interested in knowing how you improved your score by 7 points?

My first score breakdown was P:8, V:9, B:9 M
This was after about 2-3 months of intense stressing out and ultimately very little study. I took parts of practice exams but never finished the full thing in one sitting. I knew my low gpa would require a phenomenal score so that only added to the stress. When I received my score I decided that I would apply because I felt that surely ONE school would see the merits of the rest of my app. Wrong. Mind you, I only applied to MD schools because I had no idea D.O. programs existed.
Once the rejections started to pour in I realized that I could not beat the numbers game. I sought out the advice of many different premed advisers. They all suggested that I take up a post bac, or there was no hope. I decided that wasn't something I wanted to put myself through - emotionally, financially. I graduated May 07, so with my classes out of the way I set out to study my ass off during the summer! From the beginning of May till July 25th I methodically went through each subject. I devoted at least 5 hours a day to reading-- i varied my routine from studying just one subject to switching back and forth. To improve my time I kept a notebook in which I would solve random/simple multiplication, division, etc. I would do that in my "free" time. I followed the MCAT pearls advice and did at least three verbal sections each study day (I used examcrackers).
The most important thing I did to help myself was to do all the AAMC practice tests. I spaced them out, but never rescheduled any of them after I planned my calendar.
On test day I pulled off a score breakdown of P:10, V:11, B:12 and a writing of L. Notice I did not prepare at all for the writing section, and it shows.

On another note I'd like to say congrats to all those accepted to the LECOM incoming class. I am excited to get to know each of you. For those of you for whom the cycle has been rough, hang in there! I was in your shoes just a little while ago. You could not have gotten this far if you weren't tough, intelligent and persistent. You will get to your own goal.

I would very much like to hear from people who had interviews Monday and Wednesday (and tomorrow).

Just got a call to interview on the 22nd of Feb! It's not my first choice, but I would be happy there! Anyone else interviewing then?

Also, anyone know of a good hotel on/near the beach? My husband is coming with and wants to see the beach while I'm at the interview.

I stayed at a Holiday Inn in Sarasota when I came down around Christmas...It's a couple minutes from Siesta Key, which is an AWESOME beach...

Honestly, I would just stay at one of the places near the school (Hampton Inn, Econo Lodge) then your hubby can just drive down to the beach. It takes 15-20 minutes or so depending on traffic.

For all of us awesome future doctors that have been waitlisted for the time being...I talked to Heather the other day and she said that they're going to begin looking at the waitlist beginning in February. So, we may have less that a month before we get our acceptance letters!! 😀 Please let me (us) know if you get a letter! I'm getting OCD about checking the mail already. lol.

The season is in full swing right now, so it may be tough/expensive to find something on the beach. As digitlzoize noted, though, the beach is only about a half-hour or so from the hotels near the school.

This school is awesome. Did somebody see Lee, the unofficial LECOM gator mascot? Haha. I am very impressed with the PBL curriculum, and the staff members were so nice and friendly. Until next Friday, I am crossing my fingers.

I just got off the wait list a couple of days ago, so I think they have been reviewing it already....and they contacted me by phone so you might not have to wait for a letter

🙂 Maybe you got my spot!

Congratulations! 👍

Sorry to bring up a different topic. As med students, we will be required to have health insurance. Does anyone know if there is a insurance company or such that we buy insurance from? I was thinking maybe the school has some agreement with certain ins. company.

Since my wife does not work, I will have to buy insurance for my whole family (us and 2 kids). I am not sure if our kids could get some sort of health benefits from the state of FL.

If anyone can shed some light on this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what the school offers as far as insurance goes-- but for the children, they may qualify for the Florida Kidcare Program. Here's the link:

Best of luck to u and congrats!

LECOM has a group rate with Aetna (I believe). After you get your acceptance, you will get a bunch of paperwork, some of which has to do with their health insurance. You are required to have health insurance in order to attend school. I believe you can enroll your spouse and children in the plan. From what I hear, its a decent rate. I'm not too familiar with any state plans in FL, so I can't really help you there.

If you have any questions, I'd recommend emailing the Office of Financial Aid.
Either Ron Shively ([email protected]) or Denay Hunter ([email protected]) should be able to answer all of your questions.

Hi everyone!

I've been admitted since November and when do we get the welcome packet that includes all the info like Fianancial aid and living arrangement, health insurance, etc? I just hate waiting!

Our plan is with Blue Cross Blue Shield-- $10 Office copay, $20 specialist copay, $50 ED copay, $5 & $10 drugs. For children, though, check out the Kidcare program which will cost very little if you qualify.

That's pretty good. Do you know how much it is? We're probably using whatever insurance my wife gets through whatever job she gets...but...

Where do you guys go to work out? I heard there was a YMCA near by. What are the rates? Is there anything else in the area?

Oh no. Nothing is free. The "student" discount at the Y is $80 to join, which includes the first two months, then $40 per month. Most people go to Lifestyles on St. Road 70. Its like $140 to join and $48/month. Costs more.... but it's bigger, has nicer stuff, and isn't filled with kids and soccer moms like the Y.

I think lifestyles has better deals for students , I pay $40/mo.

what's wrong with soccer moms? 🙂

Sorry, my post isn't insurance related... I just interviewed at LECOM-B yesterday. The interview went well, they asked me questions off of a list, and they were all listed on SDN so I already had answers prepared for them. IMO, a very easy interview. I had doubts about the school at first and didn't even really want to interview here. Now that I did it, I am really glad that I did. It is actually a pretty cool school and I wouldn't mind going here if admitted. All the doctors were really enthusiastic about the PBL and we also got to sit in for one of the PBL sessions. I was impressed with how much the students knew and can see myself enjoying the PBL. It is definitely something that requires a lot of self-discipline to study and learn on your own though. 👍

Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, the PBL thing is something that you really need to see, and then give it thought and decide if it is for you or not, sometimes it's hard to describe properly. So far I enjoy it. For me, and probably most people, there is a "learning curve" associated with it since most of us haven't been exposed to this sort of curriculum before so it may take a little time for you to really get into a rhythm and figure out how you study best and get settled into progressing along in PBL.

Not sure if ANY of that made any sense, but I'm in my 2nd semester and I'm really just starting to get fairly comfortable in figuring out how I study and how I should approach this mountain of information that we have to tackle.

Getting to sit in on PBL is something that I'm VERY glad I got to see. Probably my favorite experience of all of interview season (and that includes swimming in the warm Gulf in mid October!).

While it's not for everyone, it's very cool for me, and it seems to implemented VERY well at LECOM. PBL is very, very easy to do poorly, but LECOM seems to have its act together.

Those are still super, super cheap gym prices. WOW

Hey everyone! Just wondering if anyone else is interviewing on 2/29 with me? Let me know! Also, could someone copy and paste those interview questions to the front? Awesome... 🙂

I am a 4th year at Lecom-B getting ready to graduate! I just wanted to say congratulations to those students whom have been accepted. I really enjoyed my four years. PBL is amazing! The faculty is great and Bradenton/Sarasota is a lot of fun. I have made a lot of close friends throughout the past 4 years. I hope you all have the same experience that I have enjoyed. Best of luck.

Hi Dream Job,

since you are a fourth year, could you let us know?

Thanks

There's no data yet on specific placements for LECOM-B MS4's. Just percentages by school. Note that about 60% skip the DO match and go straight to the allo match, which comes March 20.

They haven't given us much info yet except to say that the deans were pretty pleased. They said we'll get more info later, but they had some pretty good matches including rads and neurosurgery. I don't know, but it might be after the MD match before they tell us much more. When we find out, I'll let you know.

Don't have the rank list from the DO match yet. I have only heard from individuals where they have gotten into. I know of ortho and neuro surgery at Doctor's in Columbus, General sx at Mt. Clemens in Michigan, IM Tennessee U, Few ER's in NY, I am sure there are a bunch more. I think 50-60% will match in the MD match. The point is this: Lots of opportunity available. If you do well during your first 2 years, take both Comlex and USMLE (Don't limit yourself) step 1 and rock em'. Do a few aways during the start of 4th year at places you want to go and impress some people without being a tool and you should have no problems in the match. Now, I say this without knowing myself if I have matched or not. I am shooting for MD radiology. I received 10 interview applying fairly broadly at both community and academic hospitals. I worked my butt off the first two years while still having time for gf and other stuff. When it came time to study for step 1 and 2 I put forth 1-2 months of solid studying. I did away rotations at some good places and seeked out solid letters of rec. Currently, I am done with interviews and now I am just playing the waiting game until March 20th *FINGERS CROSSED*. Lecom-B does an excellent job of preparing you for the boards and rotations- the rest is up to you!

Best of luck!

Wow I think that's so encouraging. Congrats for making it this far... almost there! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! 🙂 :luck:

Received a letter yesterday that said the admissions reviewed my application, but has yet to make a decision. They're meeting March 1st to decide my fate (and others I assume). Ugh.

Please keep us updated and let us know how it turns out. I'm accepted at LECOM-B (Class of 2012!!!) and am also interested in pursuing radiology.

Where did you rotate and interview? What did you think of the clinical years? Did you stay in Florida for the most part?

Man, I'm getting all of our stuff ready for our trip to FL next week for my interview, and I'm really getting excited about the idea of possibly moving out there. Initially, I was thinking that I wouldn't move, but now we really want to go! Now I just hope that I can get accepted! The kids are all excited about living somewhere warm and near Disney (even though it's not really close).

Eh, Disney's probably only about 1.5-2 hours away. Of course even when I lived in Orlando I hardly went. There is Busch Gardens though just up in Tampa, another fun park.

Haha, and then there's the beach that's 20 min west of me and I've been once since I've started. 🙂

But good luck and have fun! If you have any questions just ask.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of Busch Gardens, maybe I'll just take them there while we're in. It just saves us a lot of driving since we're only going to be in town for a few days. Plus, we're staying in St. Petes so we will definately spend time at the beach, as long as the weather is cooperative. Of course, coming from Illinois, anything over 60 would probably be enough for us to get our bathing suits on!

We were looking online at houses in the area, and it seems like they all have a pool in the back yard, I was joking with my husband that when I am a student I won't even have time to get outside to see the pool much less go to the beach. But, it's just so cool that it's an option.

Weather should be pretty good. Was absolutely perfect today, mid 70's or so. The wife and I walked around at a local farmer's market and I got to see what life was like outside of books and studying!

And yeah, lots of pools here. Might be something to consider though, especially with a family and if you're planning on doing a lot of studying at home it's always nice to go sit out by a pool and read.

Well, I just got the word that classes for this week are canceled because of the shooting, so we're going to go out there early. Trying to change my ticket now so we can take a look at some houses in the area.

Was just going to ask if you were still a student at NIU..... Can't believe that, so sad. A classmate of ours has family that attends there (and handful of other students from that area) so I'm sure it hit them pretty hard, especially right before our big test on Friday.

have you guys received packets from LECOM-B yet? It's just they told me at the end of Jan and it's mid Feb already. They certainly cashed my deposit check! Just a little worried, thank God I kept my acceptance letter! 🙂

I emailed them and asked. They said they should go out early this week...we should have them by the end of the week! I hope...

When you do, try and get the ball rolling on all the medical/physical exam stuff right away. You'll have to get specific blood work and specific titers done and I think a few students had a tough time getting everything done correctly (either the Doctor forgot to order a lab, or lab results got lost, etc..) Mine went ok, but I was pretty paranoid about it and made sure I told them exactly what I needed them to do. Only had to go back a 2nd time to get my doctor to sign a couple pages he forgot to sign the first time around.

And hopefully your current insurance will cover a lot of the testing. It really varied among insurance carriers. Some people barely paid anything, others ended up paying several hundred dollars. So might want to bring that up with the doctor/office staff as far as how it will be coded and paid for.

I didn't even think about stuff like physical exam, thanks a bunch!

I didn't even think about stuff like physical exam, thanks a bunch!

Things like the HBV series take quite a few months if you haven't gotten them done yet. Plus, Lecom-B requires a titer.... so if you don't seroconvert you'll have to get boosters or do the series again. In some states, the criminal record check can take a while. In any case, like was mentioned, it can be pretty expensive. Start early 🙂.

Reading through these posts, I think I was in the interview group with ThisIsYourLife and DrMidLife at LECOM-B. I remember discussion about a Hong Kong trip in my interview group. It was January 16th.

Hey you were in my group! Congrats on getting in also!!

She called the school while I was gone just to figure out how to get me stuff, she is so sweet 😍 Im wearing them right now!
