LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You take BLS in your second semester and ACLS at the end of 2nd year. At least, that's the way it's always been done so far.

Cool. Thanks! I had a BLS, but I think it's expired...One less thing to worry about.

Ah, gracias, check that off my list!

Thanks everyone for the good luck! And yes, waiting until Monday does feel like an eternity. Haha. But from what I've been reading from SDSASEN, it appears that even if I get "accepted", I'll be on some sort of waiting/alternate list. That's not very comforting. However, June mentioned something on Wednesday about the fact that they plan for about 40 students to withdraw and give up their spots before school starts in August. She said that's been about the average every year. I'll let you know what I find out on Monday! I hope it's some kind of good news! 😀

I'll be pulling for you. At this point, I think that you're right about the waitlist, but if you get a high ranking, you're in.

Best of luck to you!!

Thanks guys. I'm unranked. This whole non-waitlist thing has really devalued my sense of being waitlisted. But I'm still hoping.

Hey, DrMidlife? Did they give you a ranking?

this is sort of hard to explain, but basically they didn't rank waitlist people.....It is sort of a language thing, They accepted people, like SDS, for spots that were not open yet, these people were accepted not waitlisted.

The people on the waitlist have not been ranked yet

But I have faith the MidLife is going to make it, even if we sneak her in on the first day............and who is to say that one of the new students just happens to not show up😱

You know I am italian.....not that I have mafia connections or anything....but just saying

The Feretti's (sp? Founders of LECOM) are italian too. Coincidence?

Seriously though...that's really wierd. So there is a ranked alternate list, then a waitlist...why not just combine it...

I swear, the ways schools come up with to make these life changing decisions never cease to amaze me.

That is soo weird. I know she's going to get in also, I just wanted to see that she was #1 on the list as she should be!

Hello Everyone!
I was recently interviewing at LECOM Bradenton and got placed on the alternate list that was ranked. I loved the school and the curriculum! I hope to hear from them soon (I haven't been accepted anywhere yet, waitlisted at 4 schools 🙁 )! I really enjoy reading your posts and believe that I have become addicted to checking the LECOM thread 🙂.
Amanda, I am keeping my fingers crossed for a positive decision on Monday! You guys seem really nice and I am really hoping to be joining you soon! I see there are already some people from Chicago/Illinois in here!
Congrats to everybody!! Have a great weekend guys!

If I was from Chicago, I'd go to LECOM-B too!!! It's cold enough here where I live...I couldn't imagine living farther north! 😱

I used to live in North Eastern Europe for a number of years - we had really cold and gray winters but not as long or as windy as the one that has just passed (I desperately hope!). It has been pretty nice in Chicago for 2-3 days already and believe it will stay this way... 🙂 No more snow or anything below 60F, please! 🙂

Congrats for getting on the 'accepted waitlist' what # are you? When did you interview?

I interviewed on April 7th and was told I was number 5 last Monday. I am going to email the ladies at the admissions office on Monday to find out about any waitlist movement. Please keep your fingers crossed! 🙂

Standard disclaimer: just my opinion, results may vary, blah, blah, blah...

REQUIRED (and you will pretty much need them)

-Even though I think there are better books for some of these subjects, because of the way tests are written and learning issues are selected (by chapter), it's probably going to be tough to avoid buying and using these texts at least to some extent.

Textbook Medical Physiology Guyton 0721602401
Mosby's Guide to Physical Exam Pkg Seidel 0323043208

-When I went through embryo, we had lectures. I don't know how imp't this text is with the new design of the course.

One of the following: IM book
-everybody has their favorite IM book, mine is personally the Lange CMDT

Cecil Textbook of Medicine Goldman 072169652X

Harrisons Principles of Internal Medicine Kasper 0071402357
Lange Current Medical Diagnosis and Treament

One of the following: Path book
-Robbins is clearly the accepted standard here, but I think you can make a pretty good case that Rubin is in some ways a better text for the needs of undergraduate medical students, and Robbins is a bit more of a reference/residency work. Do be aware, though, that learning issues will be chosen out of Robbins, so if you go with Rubin, you may have to do some translating of chapters, page numbers, etc.

Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease Kumar 0721601871
or
Rubin's Pathology Rubin 0781795168

One or more of the following: Anatomy Atlas
you need an anatomy atlas or two
Color Atlas of Anatomy Rohen 0781790131
Netter (get it free when you join SOMA)

REQUIRED (and somewhat useful?)

Gray's Anatomy for Students Drake 0443066124
In general I find reading an anatomy textbook puts me straight to sleep. Anatomy is so heavy on memorization I just went straight to a board review text and did my best to memorize it and the lectures. Gray's does have some nice pictures, but I still prefer Moore's Clinical Anatomy for the blue box clinical correlations.
Histology: A Text and Atlas Ross 0781772214
Never got into this book, just used lectures and review books.
The Immune System Parham 0815340931
Medical Genetics Jorde 0323040357
Seems like a decent book, never ended up choosing many learning issues from it, perhaps b/c much of the info is covered elsewhere

REQUIRED (and Not Useful)

Stedman Medical Dictionary Stedman 0781733901
-plenty of online sources, wikipedia is your friend
Integrative Medicine Rakel 1416029540
-this is a big interest of mine, so i wish I could recommend buying this book, but at this point it's just not used nearly enough to warrant the investment.
Medical Microbiology Mims 0323035752
-this microbiology book could be improved by including information on microbiology
Neuroanatomy: An Atlas of Structure Haines (05/07) 0781763282
-Blumenfield has plenty of pictures.
Medical Nutrition and Disease Hark 0632046589
-not used. I think I maybe saw a group pick one learning issue from it once.
Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine Ward
-most people have never even opened this book. Seriously.
An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment DiGiovanna 0781742935
-anything imp't will be given to you in a powerpoint. you won't have time to read it in a book too.

Supplemental and Very Highly Recommended

Problem Based Microbiology Nath 072160630X
Dr. Nath is a great teacher. This book presents the perfect amount of info in an interesting way.
Pathohysiology of Heart Disease Lilly 0781763215
This book is the bomb for understanding everything abut cardio. I wish there was a book like this for each body system
Goljan Rapid Review Pathology
I think they're teaching about Goljan in kindergarten now, aren't they? Sooner or later, you will want this book.
Robbins Review of Pathology
Guyton Review of Physiology
These two question books are very useful, as it is not uncommon for very similar questions to appear on PBL tests.
Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology - Examination and Board Review
As above, essential questions, and much more to the point than the "big" pharm book. To me pharm is 95% memorization, so I used this as my primary resource and only referred to the big book for clarification.(ie never)
Savarese OMT Review
Again, the best source of questions for OMM. Very helpful for test and board prep.
Mosby's Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory Tests Pagana 0323039030
There are quite a few different lab books out there, I personally use a different one, but having one will definitely help in PBL.
First Aid for the Boards, Various Board Review Books
There are different schools of thought on this; personally I used review books from day one and am very glad that I did. My feeling was that I would need them sooner or later for board review, so I might as well use them as a resource during class. The thing is, IMO, it's imp't to use them right, and this varies by subject.

Just plain Supplemental
Just in case you need more...😱

I know the list is long but could tell us from the class of 2012:
1. Which books to get
2. Which to avoid
3. Which should be used instead.
4. What you can hold off on buying for the first semester/year
5. What should be on here that isn't
6. If you've heard that any of these will change

Any input is appreciated

Wow! So helpful DW thanks a ton

This is so exciting!

any resident experts on the waitlist/alternate labyrinth? I'm planning to email June Monday but would love an explanation if anyone is bold enough to attempt one.

Really? But you're not even on the waitlist...

Isn't she nice everyone? 😀

ahh, thanks, it is all part of my campaign to run for Royal Princess of the Class of 2012

Vote for me👍 One of my platforms is a mandatory escort service to accompany any students having to walk through the clown hallway. This one of the many positions, under my "human rights" bill of 2008

Just a warning about the book list provided above. There are some changes being made to the book list this year. The path book is changing (i think to rubin), the immunology book is changing and the micro book is changing. When you get to school you need to have purchased anatomy, physiology, histology ATLEAST!

Don't royals usually inherit their power? 😕

I, for one, am aiming for Supreme Dictator. Birthright? Ha! I scoff at your birthright. *scoff*

Power should be seized...then given Dilantin. 😀

Yes royals typically inherit their power, and I will be the princess no matter if you like me or not....however I choose to be a benevolent princess, the type that dances around her castle signing songs while the birds sew my dress for the ball

You, Senor supreme dictator, will be struck down by my flock of admiring servents if you even try to touch my kingdom

Never giving up that background in politics? 😛

Although you are right about that hallway, reminds me of killer klowns from outer space.

Yes, clowns are super creepy-- I'm scarred for life from cheesy 80-90's clown movies :scared:. And don't get me started on those crazy hand puppets!!

Nlax & DW-- you guys rock! Thanks for taking the time to comment on the book lists, it is truly soooo helpful.

I've been busy not worrying about med school (all done with the shots, feel like a pin-cushion). I've been shopping! How fun is that? I'm SURE shopping will be put a stop soon as school starts! Too bad the outlet is right there off the highway! Anyway, going down there to check out apartments Memorial week with boyfriend who's relocating with me, it will be fun! I attempted to read physiology/pathology/microbiology, all failed miserably soon as the TV comes on. Oh well, I'm listening to all the current students' advice and leave them alone!

For those of you that are waiting on the waitlist, May is still not here so don't give up!
For those of you that are coming, don't you hate moving? Gosh, I swear to God that I must have moved at least 5 times when I was in undergrad. Hopefully I am not moving once we settle down into a nice apartment with our two FAT kitties! They are accustomed to cold Cleveland weather and might be too fat for Florida! 😀

Just a note about books:

Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment (CMDT) that DW mentioned and the 10th edition of Katzung's Pharm are available in entirety online on StatRef. You'll get access to them when you get to school.

I wouldn't buy the pharm book. Read it online once, then use the mini pharm to study from. You'll do just fine with that. CMDT is a good book to have but I just print out the current topics that we are covering in PBL and bring that to class. I lug around enough books anyway. Note- make extensive use of Up-to-date (also available online when you get here) because it is very current, includes lots of studies and references them, includes lots of charts and algorythms, and you can print out the stuff you need.

Remember too that the only things you'll need for a couple of weeks are anatomy, histo and an atlas. Bring the Mosby's Diagnostics book to your first PBL session because you'll spend a lot of time at first learning what types of tests are out there and wat they do. Make sure someone brings a computer (or a dictionary- your whole group will only need one) to look up the new words. You'll use Physiology a lot right off the bat. Embryo and Genetics are used a bunch in the first few cases because you have a bunch of baby cases. You'll actually pick a bunch of Anatomy and Histo issues in the beginning too. If your cases are like ours were you won't need Immuno or Path the first couple of months. You won't need Neuro until 2nd semester. The ECG book you'll need second year. I never bought any of the books for the mini courses or any of the OMM books. The Savarese one DW mentioned, though, is pretty good. Don't buy any of the mini course books now. I only bought the ones for Behavioral Science but you'll have a new professor for that since the old one is retiring. Never bought the nutrition book. I heard that some people picked chapters from it, though. Can't think of anything else to say right now. As for supplements, look at soemone elses before you decide to spend the money on them, but buy Goljan and Nath's book-- you'll be glad you did.

Remember, this is just my opinion. Your actual experience may turn out to be different 🙂.

Yeah, I'm hoping that the FL weather will inspire my kitties to lose a little heft. This is my 22lb kitty!

She has been on 'diet' food from the vet for the last year, and has lost nothing! We are going to get a house with a screened porch/pool, and we're going to put a big cat tree out on the porch for the kitties to go play. I think they'll like it there.

Nlax & DW-- you guys rock! Thanks for taking the time to comment on the book lists, it is truly soooo helpful.

I second this! I really appreciate all of the advice from those that have been there done that! Makes the adjustment a little easier on us (and our wallets)!

A lot of people, including myself, are going to be throwing advice at you about med school. My advice (ironic, I know - advice about advice) is to take it all with a grain of salt. The most important thing is to find what works for you, and that applies to book lists as well as study groups, etc.

I'm sure the booklist seems fairly overwhelming. Something to keep in mind is this: If you're used to lecture-based learning, you might be accustomed to using your textbooks as a reference, maybe to clarify something or to get a little extra detail. One thing that's different in PBL is that you really do learn almost everything from textbooks and /or supplemental books, so it's very important to find the resources that work for you. At the end of the day, what's most important is that you learn the info; how you get there (ie what books you use) is totally up to you.

Exactly. I will answer any question and am always willing to give my 2 cents, but at some level it's just my take on things. I remember I'd ask 5 different 2nd years something and would pretty much get 5 differing opinions. Definitely not a bad thing, because they've been a HUGE help to me, but just something to keep in mind.

But keep firing away whenever a question comes up. Looks like ya'll should have a good class coming in this year. I think the sense of humor and goofiness will fit in! 😀

Alright, I'm going to throw this out there one more time before I get an apartment. Whats the deal with the new apartment complex being built within a mile of campus. I heard something about this place but no one seems to know if it exists or if its just a rumor. If it is true, is it done being built yet and will it be ready to live in next year. Does anyone know what I'm even talking about? Someone help me out.

I've read about something similar but all the development plans for right around the school are still in the "planning" stages so go ahead and go for the complexes currently up.

Have come across a couple articles though. The school is on Lakewood Ranch Blvd NORTH of SR-70, but all the current residential and commercial areas of Lakewood Ranch are SOUTH of SR-70, but it looks like there are big, long-term plans to expand north and start developing the land up around the school with residential areas, hotels, commercial areas.....to try and make it more of the "hub" for that area. When you go to school you'll some sort of half built structure set back in the fields on the other side of the road, I think that was supposed to be some sort of hockey and/or sports complex that just never got finished. I think that whole area is what they are wanting to develop and build up, just nothing in the immediate future that will benefit us.

Looks like we may get a bowling alley there early next year though:

Holy crap that cat is huge. I doubt the sun will really do too much. 😛 Perhaps it is bad genetics? How much of this diet food are you giving it?!

She was healthy when she was younger (she's 8 now). Our vet has calculated out how much food based on her weight. We're supposed to take her in to be weighed every month.

....We are going to get a house with a screened porch/pool, and we're going to put a big cat tree out on the porch for the kitties to go play. I think they'll like it there.

From experience I can tell you that they LOVE chasing lizards. We have a bunch of plants around the pool and they hide in them. However, it's not uncommon to find an uneaten lizard head or still-wiggling lizard tale lying around the house somewhere 🙂.

We have wild cats in our yard-- they're beautiful though. The mama cat is white, and the dad is black with white paws, and four new kittens, three white and one black with white paws... so cute! U can't get near them though, when I feed them they run off or wait for me to leave before eating.

The kittens climbed into my husband's engine, and when we tried to poke them out the little black on hissed at me and scared the krap out of me! 😱 Yeah, they're wild. But good at keeping racoons/snakes/possums and heaven knows what else out of our yard (we live next to a foresty area).

😱 Like, in the house? Or around the yard?

Either way...free dinner! 😀:barf:

I was all set on moving into Carlton Arms until I read some online reviews that made the place sound horrible so now I have decided to keep looking around. Anyone on these boards ever live the Springs at Braden River? I can't seem to figure out how far away it is from LECOM, yahoo maps says 6.8 miles and 10 min, google earth says 11 miles and 30 min, and a lady from the apartment complex told me 5 min. If anyone has been there help me out! Also, if anyone has lived at Carlton Arms let me know if the terrible reviews I read are true or not. Thanks for your help everyone.

Well keep us informed when you find out your movement!

I just heard from Annette that the list has moved by 3 spots since it was created last week! That's really great news. I can't wait till my first official acceptance! 🙂

Hey Punchap, I did go to Case! Yeah for still paying off student loans! 👎 Anyway, I attended 01-06, have been working for almost three years and am selling house and moving down to sunny FL. Are you still finishing up school? All these kitties talk, my kitties are fat but I give them all the food they want because if not, they stay up at night and meow until I give them food! Haha...

Oh, by the way, what's horrible about Carlton Arms, that's one place I plan on living too!
