LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

Oh, by the way, what's horrible about Carlton Arms, that's one place I plan on living too!

Well all the reviews I read were from www.apartmentratings.com, and I dunno how accurate they are but there were a lot of really negative comments. Mainly the place is old and outdated, very old appliances, carpet, things breaking. Now I'm not sure if this is true or not thats why I came here to get some feedback, because up until that point I was pretty set on living there this upcoming year. I wish I could afford a trip down there to check these places out.

There a few reviews here too:

There's one review of Carlton Arms...some others too.

So I just good news and better news today! I had my interview @ LECOM on April 16th and finally got to speak with June today. She informed me that I am #30 on the 'accepted waitlist' but that she expected me to receive my official acceptance by June or July. I'm hopeful. And if for any reason I'm not able to get in for August of this year, she informed me that I was one of those chosen to receive a guaranteed seat for the class of August '09! Yay. So it looks like I'll be moving to Bradenton this July either way, because if I don't go this year I'm definitely in for next! Whoo hooo!!! Anyone lookin' for a roommate? 😀

Congrats! Check out the Facebook LECOM-B Class of 2012 group and the Lecom-B SGA website for some roomies.

Congrats Amanda! The waitlist moves pretty quickly and with #30 you have a very high chance for getting in for 2008. I was interviewing 4-7 and they put me as #5 initially on the list. They also told me about the automatic acceptance for 2009. I found out today that I am #2 now. I got an email from Annette in the admissions office that she was going to send me their matriculation packet and I should start working on it once I get it! Just keep emailing/calling June/Annette/Heather each week and ask about your waitlist ranking - it changes really fast. Good luck! :luck:

Hey,
I'm on the alternate list, and haven't heard anything yet. I interviewed back in January. Anybody else in the same boat? How did you guys getting in do on the MCAT?

Hey Punchap, I did go to Case! Yeah for still paying off student loans! 👎 Anyway, I attended 01-06, have been working for almost three years and am selling house and moving down to sunny FL. Are you still finishing up school? All these kitties talk, my kitties are fat but I give them all the food they want because if not, they stay up at night and meow until I give them food! Haha...

Oh, by the way, what's horrible about Carlton Arms, that's one place I plan on living too!

I was at Case 03'-07'. Just working now during the interim. I bet I'll recognize you when we start school. Can I ask your name? (PM me if you'd rather). Gotta love those student loans.

Your cat is adorable...I'm trying to fatten mine up a bit. She's getting old and I don't want her to lose too much weight.

Thanks, kwnet! That makes me feel a lot better. Glad to hear that about the waitlist movement. Hopefully I'll be seeing you in the fall! 🙂

Hey guys, I interviewed on April 14th (Monday). I called today and I was told I am #24 on the alternate list. Annette said she was confident a spot would open up, but I'm just worried to make that assumption and look for apartments in Florida (I'm from Buffalo, NY) because there is no way of knowing for sure.

I also interviewed at KCUMB on Thursday and got accepted. I'm willing to submit the deposit to hold my spot, but LECOM-Bradenton is my first choice and even though I have a guaranteed spot for 2009, I don't want to wait a year to start med school. Basically, I'm wondering how realistic you guys think it is for me to get a spot at LECOM this year (based on what you have heard), since I don't want to wait until late July (when I know for sure) to start looking for apartments.

I'll appreciate any advice you guys can give me.

I remember Heather saying that last year about 40 people got accepted off the waitlist. I think this number stands for previous years too. Maybe others can concur?

So, I think your chance is really good.

(For whatever it's worth, I may be giving up my spot at LECOM-B. I'm currently on a high waitlist at my first choice)

Thanks so much for your response! That's really encouraging, I'm definitely thinking about beginning to look for apartments in Bradenton soon.

If you are ranked it means that you will most likely get in. They wouldn't be giving you a number if you weren't getting in. I would make plans to move to Florida. Congrats!

Thanks LauraDO and Dr.MidLife! I'm convinced now I should start looking for apartments down there. I will post updates.

my apartment search is full on now.. i *think* I have decided on one.. now i am finally getting excited.

I can't wait to start looking at places out there. We had a really nice family look at our house this weekend, so I'm praying that they make an offer. I am so ready to move now!

That's awesome. Which apartment place did you decide on? Have you visited some? I am thinking about making a trip to Bradenton this Thursday or Friday (maybe both days) to check out some of the following: 210 Watermark, Harbour Pointe, The Sanctuary of Bradenton, Carlton Arms, Manatee Woods, Woodbury, Colonial Grand, Fountain Lake, Champion's Walk, The Preserve at Manatee Bay, Aaron Lake, Fisherman's Landing, Gardenwalk, Village at Cortez, and Sabal Cove. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! 🙂

She was healthy when she was younger (she's 8 now). Our vet has calculated out how much food based on her weight. We're supposed to take her in to be weighed every month.

She is like a small panther now! Could she be getting into anything when you guys are gone? One of my friends had trouble with her cat's weight and she was cutting the diet but she didn't realize that he nawed a hole into another bag of fun and was munching on that in secret...and he had a thing for leftovers.

Haha, no. We have their food in a huge tupperware type container. I think she just needs to move around more. She just eats and sleeps. The other day she actually jumped up on the couch, that was a big day! Actually, my baby was playing with a toy that had a mirror the other day, and it was reflecting some sunlight on the wall. She was actually jumping (feet leaving the ground!) for about 5 minutes before she went and took a nap. I was shocked!

This is what we really need...

I just express mailed my paper work except for the background check. Our SBI told me that I will get the background check early next week. I hope it will be okay. I sent a background check done by a private agency as a temporary back up. Does anyone know if I miss the deadline (April 25th) by a few days, do I have to submit a petition or something?

But I wanted to know if anyone had difficulty with their drug screening. My doctor wrote the correct order - 10 panel drug screening and ethanol test. The geniuses at Labcorp in Raleigh ended up doing a 9 panel plus ethanol. I went there, explained what happened. Finally they admitted doing the wrong screening. And sample was taken again. Few days later, I got the report..this time they did a 11 panel screening. 11 panel is not 10 panels + another extra panel. So as a result, TCA was not done. Finally, I went to another lab and did an instant screening today. I cannot believe Labcorp messed it up twice in a row. So, if anyone is doing screening at Labcorp, make sure you tell them to put the right code. I have never ever smoked a single cig. let alone drugs! What a hassle to go through.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Same deal here. Where did you get your correct one done?

I called Heather, and she said I was ok as far as the deadline goes...you should probably do the same though...just to be safe.

I think those deadlines are more the preferred dates for administration than do-or-die. Everybody seems to have different deadline depending when you were accepted. Mine is May 31st.

OMG, just when I think that things are going my way.... my cat has a blown pupil (not the one in the picture, our other cat) and our vet is closed for the day! She hasn't had any head trauma or anything, this really sucks!

I'm so sorry...I hope she's ok!

I hope your kitty is OK. Send him/her my love! I weighed my two kitties today and both are 13 lbs.

I know its about an hour away.. but you go to Animal 911 (Chicago Midwest Exotics is a second name) in Skokie, If you take 88E to 294N to Dempster East and go about 7miles down dempster it should be there on the left hand side, i believe..

this is where we go for our animal emergencies.. they are VERY good there! its a 24 hour place

Oh no Kate! Poor little thing... I hope his eye is OK, and that it doesn't cost a fortune at the vet 🙄.

I ended up going to A-1 labs. I think they have offices in just three states NC, IN, and OH. There are many small labs will do drug screening - I think they are much easier to deal with than labcorp.

Anyone have any insight into how the clinical years work at Bradenton? I'm primarily interested in EM and I'd like to avoid moving more than once a year.

I am officially complete with all the orientation package stuff as of today! Muwahahaha...jealous? 😉 So when does financial aid stuff come out, I'm more interested in that one!

Hello everybody! I just got a call from Annette in the admissions office - and I was accepted of the waiting list! It's kind of funny because my b-day is tomorrow and she said my official acceptance letter would be mailed with tomorrow's date 🙂. That's a great b-day present.
Amanda and others on the ranked waiting list - I'm certain that we'll see you guys in August!! The list moves really quickly. Have a great day everybody! I surely will 🙂.

Congrats!! Great to hear that the list is moving, I'm excited to see everyone get their acceptances instead of having to be in limbo on the list.

Kate- what is the Code Kitty update

Kate- what is the Code Kitty update

Thanks everyone! I just got back from the vet, and they don't really know what exactly is going on. Her pupil is still off, but it is slightly reactive. She has some precipitus on her cornea (or something like that), and a bit of inflamation so they think that there is some infection process of some sort. But, her BP is good, her retina looks normal, occular pressure is ok, so really aside from doing a CT to rule out a tumor of some sort, they said that the major problems are ruled out. So, we're going to do antibiotics/steroids for a week and see if that does anything.

The good thing is that she got all of her shedding for the year done in the one hour that we were at the vet, and it's all attached to the clothes that I was wearing (I may just throw that shirt out- lol!)

Poor kitty 🙁. I hope she'll get better while on the meds.

Anyone bringing a dog?

Hee hee, yes I am!!! Ugh, Labcorp only did the 9 panel on me (poopers). So, I'm doing the individual test for what's missing (methamphetamines and tricyclic antideprsnts I think). I hope that will replace the 10-panel...?!

I'm more interested in getting my financial aid check-- keep the paperwork missy! 😀

If it's not one of the little ones, it's the cat isn't it? 🙄 I hope she gets better soon..:luck:

Ugh, I know. I will have to make due! Not to mention that after school starts, my childcare expenses will be almost what I pay in mortgage 😱.

I have to admit, I'm bummed out that school starts on my little man's 3rd birthday 🙁. I guess we will have to party beforehand :hardy:. This is going to be hard (probably harder on me than him)... I'll miss playing with him all day.

That's great news, kwnet!!! Happy Birthday to you! 😉 Thanks for the encouraging words. I hope you're right about the list. I'm going to Bradenton tomorrow to start checking out apartments. 🙂

I am really hoping to get in for August since I'm on the ranked waiting list. It sucks that I probably won't receive a matriculation packet until June or July, though. I don't want to be rushing to get everything done in time before school starts. Can anyone already officially accepted tell me some of the things that need to be done so I can get a head start on them (i.e. drug tests, shots, books, etc.) ????????? I'd really appreciate it!!!! 😀

1) Here's what Heather emailed about the drug test:

Please make sure when you get your test that it is a 10 Panel and that Ethanol is a separate test, in addition to the 10 Panel. If you have any questions, please call me, I will be happy to help.

Here is a list of what needs to be tested for:

THC (MARIJUANA) • COCAINE • PCP • OPIATES • METHAMPHETAMINES • METHADONE • AMPHETAMINES • BARBITURATES • BENZODIAZEPINES • Tricyclic Antidepressants

2) Shots/vaccines/Immunization records:

Tetanus, Polio, Hepatitis B, Varicella/chickenpox, Rubella, Rubeola, Mumps, Measles, PPD (TB Skin test: 2 step process required)

Also a physical examination with your physician, but wait till you get the forms for this step.

3) Statewide criminal records check from your primary jurisdiction of residence (eg: state police agency, attorney general's office, etc) Students who cannot obtain criminal record check from their state can obtain a National Record Check from the FBI.

4) If you haven't done so, fill out FAFSA and designate LECOM as one of your schools. Code: G30908

I know it's mentioned above, but don't forget to ask for a separate alcohol screening in addition to 10 drugs listed above.

Also, you need to have your blood drawn to show Positive Titers for Varicella, Rubella, Rubeola, Mumps and Hep B. If any are negative, you need to be vaccinated again. If you don't have them already, I was able to order my shot records from school records from grade school district.... I know it's alot-- good luck!!

Amanda, sending you a PM to send you immunization form for reference. Hope the list moves quickly!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

I am not sure if we discussed this already - but those of you who are buying laptops - which one are you buying?

I know I should conserve money - but I am considering this HP laptop from Sam's club. The dilemma is there is one 15.4 inch laptop for $800 and another one 17" for $950. These two have almost identical features. But I am thinking 17" might be too big to carry around. But it's one awesome laptop - can't look away.

As someone who's had all sizes of laptops, I can definitely say the <15" ones are way better. If I ever want a bigger screen, I use the S-video port on the side to plug into my TV and watch movies...

Bigger screen means: more weight, less battery life, higher cost, more heat = slower processing and decreased sperm count, more weight, did I mention more weight?

You'll barely notice the difference between the two anyways once you're using it.

I have a relatively recent HP and love it. It's been really sturdy and nice.

You can probably do better than Sam's Club though.

gotta put a plug in for macs...the best computer ever....once you go with a mac you can never go back

While I have a HP, I agree with Laura. (My husband works in IT and he even says that Macs have IMB beat in so many areas- Though he does not have a mac either). Just watch out for Vista with new computers, if you can get one with XP. I just got a new machine and I have Vista, and have had so many problems, not to mention that it is slow (and I got a super fast computer).

Anyways, there is a thread about laptops with lots of opinions if you are interested.

gotta put a plug in for macs...the best computer ever....once you go with a mac you can never go back

😳 I actually had a 17" Mac Powerbook. It was ok. I went back. After about 6 months.

I think some of the Mac software is pretty good...the word processor in particular. I hated not having the same programs as other people though...

There were tons of other things I didn't like...or just couldn't get used to, like the close button being on the wrong side of the window...I've been using PC's since 1985 and close my windows on the upper right corner 😡.

That being said, iTunes is an awesome music ripper and organizer.

I also do alot of music production work and the Mac music software wasn't very good. Garage band is fine for beginners and ProTools is ok if you have a mega powerhouse computer, but the middle of the road stuff sucks.

Sorry...just wanted to prove Laura wrong...you can go back!

...on a related note: You know what bugs me? Those Mac/PC commercials. I mean, I get it. It's kinda cute, but they hit a little below the belt sometimes...

I upgraded one of my computers to Vista without a single problem at all. In fact, there are a LOT of great improvements...Most of the people I've talked to that complain about Vista, don't actually complain about Vista. They're like: "I hate the new Word/Excel. I can't get it to do ______." They're just used to the old Office programs and haven't taken the time to learn how to use the new/awesome ones. I loathed Word, but LOVE the new one. So much easier to use.

Sorry. Just venting a little. Horrible test today, and it's over. So now...to sleep!

gotta put a plug in for macs...the best computer ever....once you go with a mac you can never go back

If I was in the market for a new laptop the new Mac Air looks very tempting.....oh well.

I'd also recommend the smaller screen. Mine is just a 14" Dell (a few years old) but I don't think I'd ever get something bigger than 14". I guess if it's going to be your only computer and you'll be studying in one place most of the time then a larger screen could be nice, especially if you'll use it for movies and such at home. But just hauling it around or setting it up to study in different places could quickly become annoying.

And you really don't need to go overboard on it. For the most part anything that will get on the internet, and run apps such as microsoft word, powerpoint, and can play videos will work fine. Mine's probably bordering on close to 3 years old at this point and it's fine. I can't really play games on it but I don't really have time for that stuff anyway.

There are a handful of people who have tablets. Not sure how much they use the tablet features now since we're pretty much just reading textbooks. During anatomy you'll have tons of powerpoint slides and both OMM, Clinical Exam and the mini-courses will use slides so the tablet features may be useful there but depends on your usage.

The only other thing I can think of is if you do happen to take a lot of notes on the computer get a comfortable keyboard.
