LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone, this is sorta off-topic but I was wondering if anyone on here might know any information about the job market in Manatee county for Elementary School teachers? The reason why I ask is because my girl friend is planning on moving with me to Bradenton from the Philly suburbs next year when I begin school, but I am worried about her finding a job.

I have always heard that the job market for teachers is much better in the southern states compared to PA. But, I am curious to hear if the same can be said for FL and Manatee county in particular.

I am especially curious to hear from anyone currently attending LECOM Bradenton that has a significant other that is teaching in Manatee County?

Thanks in advance for any information or advice!

I know of one or two who have spouses who teach, I think mainly Elementary School.

The problem currently is Florida is in the middle of a big budget battle and having to cut a good amount of $$ from a lot of programs, including education. I know Manatee county specifically is in the middle of trying to figure out where to cut money from to keep from laying off hundreds of teachers, but it may mean an overall reduction in everyone's salary.

But as far as actual job opportunities I'm not sure. Here is the county's school board website: http://www.manatee.k12.fl.us/ Could contact the HR department when the time gets closer.

Hey guys...I have some questions about the matriculation packet. 😕

*For the drug screen, do we go to our primary care physician and ask to get it done, or do we just have to go to LabCorp and pay out of pocket??? I have an HMO with Aetna right now, but I don't know if it's covered.

*On one of the required things it says "Proof of Health Insurance". Do we have to provide proof of the health insurance that we currently have, or is that for the health insurance we're required to get while we're at LECOM (Blue Cross or whatever)????

Drug Screen: You can go to your doctor, but most likely your insurance won't cover it, mine was just denied. I went to my doc because I was going in for the physical anyways and I wanted to try to do everything together.

For the insurance, you can either show them proof that you are covered, maybe under a spouse plan, or you can get their insurance which I think is automatic unless you show them proof otherwise.

So I just called the LabCorp in Tampa, FL and they said that out of pocket, a 10 panel drug screen is $265.

Going to labcorp was such a waste of time for me. You should do a google search for 'drug screen' in your city/area and call a few different labs and ask them if they will do a 10 panel drug test and also ethanol test.

In Raleigh-Durham area, I contacted two labs. If they had to send the sample somewhere else and have a pathologist review it, the cost of 10 panel was 50-60 bucks. If they did an instant 10 panel drug screening which is what I ended up doing ..that cost 40 bucks or so.

If you do an instant 10 panel, request the lab to give you a list of the panels and specify results for each one. So, hopefully..unless you are are enjoying drugs for dessert..you should have 10 negatives.

Bottom line..definitely go with a smaller local lab.

Also, for lab work and vaccination etc..even if Insurance doesn't pay, make sure your doctor's office files with the insurance. That way, you will pay what insurance company negotiated with the doctor's office. If they don't file with insurance, a vaccination might cost 100 bucks. But insurance probably negotiated to give the clinic 20 bucks.

For you: $1008 for six months.
For your spouse: $1428 for six months.

Kidcare from the state of FL for the kids is really, really cheap.

This is really expensive I think. At my current job, this year we went to a new health insurance type (high deductive insurance) with Blue Cross Blue Shield. We have a 2200 deductible for the whole family. In last two months, we had to go to doctors offices a bunch of times. And yet, we have not hit $1500 dollars yet. I think if we are a little careful, we will not even use $2000 worth of services.

I am leaning towards a very high deductible insurance for myself and my wife. Since we don't have any chronic issues, this insurance is primarily for catastrophic situations. Premium is only $140 per month for both of us.

Thanks for your info.

That's the way insurance used to be. Just like car insurance, you paid for routine maintenance out-of-pocket and catastrophic things were paid by insurance. And, prices were lower then, way lower, because you didn't have a middleman (insurance company) making a huge profit of of you.

I've only used more than $1500 of medical in a single year once that I can remember. Normally, I probably use less than $300 in a year, except for the two weeks I spent hospitalized a few years ago. The hospital bill was $65,000. The surgeon charged me $160 every time he walked in the room. My doc charged me every time he entered the room. The nephrologist charged $900 and I only saw her twice. Oh, and drugs aren't included in that figure either. In the 10 years prior to that, though, I never saw a doctor more than once a year-- if once. So, a high deductible plan would be good for me. However, the language in the waiver says that "You MUST enroll in this plan unless you are covered under your parents' plan or your spouse's plan. NO OTHER PLANS WILL BE ACCEPTED AS VALID COVERAGE BY THE SCHOOL." So, I didn't have much of a choice but to accept it. I haven't used much of it in the last two years, though.

We're covered under my husband's insurance... but I don't remember getting anything in my packet asking for proof of insurance. I certainly don't want to have to pay for insurance through the school if I don't have to....

For Kidcare don't you have to meet some low income requirement?

FL Kidcare does have prices based on income on a sliding scale, but I think the max you pay for monthly premium is around $25 which includes all children. It's good for people who may be employed (or in school) but children but have no insurance coverage.

For anyone interested in Family coverage, I talked to financial aid and they said that coverage (for family) would be $644/month. Sorry, don't know what individual or individual + spouse will be, but he said it will come out to us when they confirm their renewal.

Also wanted to let you know, Humana now offers medical insurance plans for individuals and families. For instance, I did a sample quote for individual + spouse, it is $308/month with $1000 deductible. They offer different plans too, some with much higher deductibles that cost less.

For an individual female, 30 yrs, for $1000 deductible is $163/month.

Here's website incase anyone is shopping ($600+ a month is expensive):

http://www.humana-one.com/florida-health-insurance/plans-available.asp

You can try here too:

http://www.ehealthinsurance.com/

I actually got a discount throught this place through my songwriting organization, BMI. We play just under $200/mo for my wife and I through Anthem. Our deductable is $500 and we pay 20% copays...I think.

I don't know how much the discount is, but it's free to join BMI, if you're willing to fill out the paperwork and say that you write songs...

We have a Humana One plan right now, and it is pretty crappy (we have the high $7500 deductible plan and pay about $300/mo for our family - the rates that they give online are teasers). We are not the type of family that can go on a high deductible catastrophic only plan because I have kids that need immunizations, I see several doctors a year for various things, my daughter has allergies, and since we had kids, we've been to the ER at least once a year, at about $1500/visit. So, I think that either we'll pay to go on my husbands employers plan, which is also abut $600/mo or we'll go on LECOM's. Really, we were paying $1015/month for our COBRA plan which had good benefits, so $600/mo is pretty good if they have good coverage!

I forgot to mention prescriptions, in the family we have several that we need regularly, and I want the coverage for that!

Anyone hear anything about the waitlist lately? I sent an email early this week and never received a response 🙁

Same here. As much as I want to go to LEcOM, I've been very disappointed by the admissions office. They send extremely delayed responses and act pretty cold.

Really? They have been extremely helpful to me...I'm not on the waitlist though...I am on the waitlist at a couple other places, and they are also less helpful.

I think it's just part of being on the waitlist. Any waitlist.

I sent Heather an email asking if I could get any info on my status and Annette sent me one back with the generic "We'll be looking at alternates in the next few weeks and get back to you with a status update as soon as we hear anything". Translation: They're going to send out the lovely "There is currently no change in your alternate status" email. lol.

I'm a little frustrated to say the least, but I'm used to it after the 4th email. I'm looking forward to see if the real waitlist/alternate list starts moving soon.

Good luck guys!

Heather in particular has been extremely helpful to me as well, which is not to say Annette or anyone else in Admissions at LECOM-B is any different. Again, however, I am on the accepted list but their continued contact with regard to immunizations and the like has been nothing but pleasant.

I am on the alternate list at OUCOM and their policy, unlike LECOM-B's, prevents them from telling me what number I am on the alternate list. That said they have been less helpful than LECOM-B obviously, but they were certainly more responsive than what Dirk has supposedly been getting. It surprises me as well to hear this because any and all interaction I have had with LECOM-B from the initial application to the school to now has been nothing but prompt and helpful.

they only have 2 posts.. maybe they are just trying to start something.. because all of my interactions with lecom have also been wonderful.. especially those with Heather and June..

I kinda view it the same way I approach product reviews online. Someone buys something, is happy with it.... not very likely they'll go post a good review of that thing. They take it home and it breaks or they just don't like it --> more likely to go post a "bad review".

There is always going to be those who seem to fall through the cracks and for whatever reason end up talking with the school on a bad day, or the person at the school just loses something and forgets to call them back.... it happens. Sure if it happens to you then you're probably going to be upset, but how many times have you "dropped the ball" when dealing with a situation or another person.

So I just take these things for what they're worth. What would get my attention is if there starts to be a pattern cropping up or if a ton of people all had the same problem and are started complaining about it.

Gosh, at every store I shop at I've probably had at least one bad experience at each one. But if I constantly had issues at a specific store then I'd stop going there.

Just got a call from my Doc and all my titers came back positive so no more shots for me!!! Woo hoo! what a relief!

Now all I have to do is get my second tb test and I am homefree😀

They've also been very attentive to me, and I've been asking all sorts of questions about insurance and our testing. Heather, Annette, and Ron from Financial Aid have all responded within a few hours of my emailing them.

I think that the case here is that they really don't have any news for you, and are probably getting alot of people calling on their waitlist status. They are really busy right now sorting out who is going to be going there, getting stuff for packet deadlines (BTW, the 16th was the deadline for the Feb Group so there may be spots opening up this week for those that missed their deadline). Really, just have a little patience right now. They're not going to forget about anyone, they probably just don't have any news to report, and if they took time every week to call 100 people and tell them that there is no news, they would never get through the paperwork to give out the new slots.

Also, don't foget that admissions is not all they do. They are a part of Student Affairs. Right now, 150 soon-to-be graduates and their families from the class of 2008 are calling them about that. 300 current first and second year students are calling them about stuff. The pharmacy kids are calling them about stuff. They have a LOT to do.

I know that the waitlist is still moving. When I called yesterday, I was informed that I'm now #6. That means I moved up two spots this week. I'm sure you guys who are also waiting will be hearing some good news soon! 🙂

I'm not quite sure how competitive LECOM-B is with MD schools as far as multiple acceptances are but May 15 (last Thursday) was the deadline to announce the medical school you are attending for many (perhaps all?) MD schools. This means after May 15th you can longer decide between what MD school you want to go to and a lot of people draw their name from the acceptance list of all schools they planned on attending but the one of their ultimate choosing. Furthermore I believe more and more schools are requiring additional payments towards tuition deterring more students from remaining on multiple school's acceptance lists so stay positive, hopefully things move in a positive direction for all of you this coming week in particular.

Good luck! Hopefully you all will be my classmates, like the wonderful active people on this forum now!

My boyfriend and I are going down there next week for a whole week to scope out apartments and vacation a little! Trying to enjoy the beach without thinking about school related stuff for the last time! I will let you guys who won't be able to go there know where I end up seeing and feedbacks, as well as any deals going on! Florida here I come! 🙂

I was thinking about the Tuscany apartments or whatever they are called but don't have an opportunity right now to take a close look, if you happen to check those out let me know what you think, thanks!

Tuscany is nice and there are several Lecom students there already. The problem with it is the commute. Anything on the west side of I-75 has the potential for a horrible commute. The biggest poblem is just getting onto the interstate. University Parkway can be a nightmare. It's much better now that they widened the road, but you are better off finding something on the other side of I-75, IMO.

The good part about that area, though, is that the area has great restaurants, places to study, etc. Everything you'll ever need is nearby.

I never said I was having a bad overall experience with LECOM! Heather has been more than helpful in the past, however when they say they're going to review your application every month and I don't hear back for months it gets a little frustrating.
Also when I first applied (which really screwed me) they supposedly 'lost my application' for three months. They took my deposit but never checked to see if my app was in (and it was). So instead of applying in August I officially applied at the end of Oct. Oh well. If I don't get in this round there's always next year which is coming up fast! 🙂

For those of you still waiting, don't lose heart... I know it can be hard waiting for news- just hang in there! You're right, if it doesn't happen this year, there's always next year... which will come around much sooner that you'd think. :luck: :luck:

I'm definitely not trying to "start something" as a previous poster stated. I'm just trying to vent my frustration with the whole process so far.

I interviewed at the beginninng of April and got my waitlist letter in the mail on April 28th. I immediately called and accepted a spot on the waitlist, but when I came on the SDN thread, I found they had ranked their list weeks before. This obviously peeved me off, b/c this meant I was basically interviewed for no reason. Since Ms. Shively said about 40 people are pulled off the waitlist every year, and Amanda started out around the 30 mark, this means I'll have to be one of the next 10. Ugh, so frustrating. But yeah, thanks for the info and encouragement and I wish y'all good luck.

Tuscany apartments are like 25 minutes from LECOM and RIGHT on the interstate. I'd recommend checking out the closest apartments to school (15 minutes or less): Colonial Grand at Lakewood Ranch, The Springs @ Braden River, and the Yacht Club. Good luck! 🙂

I wouldn't say you interviewed for no reason. I'm not sure if this year is the same as last, but I was told that they hold open seats until interviews are completed. Just because they had a ranked list, doesn't mean that seats were not available for those that were interviewed. And also, if they pulled 40 people from the waitlist, it doesn't mean that everyone who's waitlisted accepted a spot. If Amanda was at ~30, it doesn't mean 30 people before her accepted seats... They may go through 50 people to fill 30 seats (just an example).

Is anyone going to be in town for 4th of July weekend, I will have just arrived and would hate to be all by my lonesome!

So I am putting myself up on the auction table.....Spend some quality time with LauraDO....this is a priceless investment

Do I have my first bidder?

LauraDO: Is anyone going to be in town for 4th of July weekend, I will have just arrived and would hate to be all by my lonesome!

Ill be moving in that weekend too! Hopefully my fiancée will be there also, keeping me company on the drive down from Texas.

Aww LauraDO. I wish I could be down there with you guys. I know that a few people will be down there, but I don't know how many. It seems that the bulk of us will be down there around the 18th, making the party happening sometime around the 25th (give a week for everyone else to get there). As I've said to you on Facebook, there is a pretty tight-knit group of us chatting on a nightly basis, so I'm sure we're going to head out and do SOMETHING before classes start. You, and everyone else, would be more than welcome to join us.

nlax.. are you serious? Is that the list that we have to purchase?

How often do you update these books from year to year?

EDIT: Do you recommend purchasing all books, including the supplemental books?

nlax.. are you serious? Is that the list that we have to purchase?

How often do you update these books from year to year?

The required list is pretty much what you'll use during the first two years, and will be what you select exam topics from, with the exception of a few of those.... you won't be selecting topics from ones like the dictionary, or internal med, etc.... just the basic/core sciences (anatomy, histo, neuro, micro, path, biochem, pharm, behavioral, nutrition, physio).

This was basically the same list we had to start with. They did change 3 books on us though, Path, Microbiology, and Immunology. So you'll start off with those, we had different ones and will probably get these "new" ones over the summer.

I'm sure some people went out of purchased every single book but it's not necessary. I think earlier in this thread a few of us went through which books we did and did not get so you might want to check that out again.

But here are the ones I did NOT get:
-Integrative Medicine (Haven't touched it or even seen it)
-Internal Medicine (helpful to look at once you make a dx, don't necessarily need your own copy),
-Neuroanatomy Atlas (the regular neuroanatomy book was enough for me)
-Nutrition (read some of it for the 1st time the other day, just used library's copy)
-OMM (haven't looked at or had a need to look at either of the OMM textbooks)

I did get a dictionary but I probably shouldn't have. I haven't used it since the first few weeks of PBL.

Pretty much all the others you will use throughout first year at some point, though some you probably won't use much, if at all, until 2nd semester. I think I've touched my micro book 2 times so far, probably used most during 2nd year. And of course now I need a different one, hopefully changes like that shouldn't happen often. The micro book they switched to is a problem based micro book that was written by one of the faculty, and seems to get good reviews. The new pathology book is supposed to be a little tolerable as the one we're using now is pretty much meant for pathology residents. Haven't heard anything on the new Immunology book. I think a good number of people didn't like the one we're using now but I didn't mind it.

The library should have copies of all these so you can always just use the copy here. Just depends if you want your own to read elsewhere and/or to highlight.

Ok.. you're the best! I guess we'll start looking for them now!

EDIT: Sorry again. Do you recommend picking up the Supplemental books?

Ok.. you're the best! I guess we'll start looking for them now!

EDIT: Sorry again. Do you recommend picking up the Supplemental books?

The only supplemental books on that list I have are:
- Rohen's atlas (has actual cadaver labelled images), only used it during anatomy
- Manter and Gatz's essentials of clinical neuroanatomy (a fairly good, small/condensed neuro review book)

Some of the regular textbooks also have smaller, companion/review, versions available that follow along with the book. For physio I have the "baby" pocket version along with a question book and a smaller/board review version of the pharm text.

Definitely nothing on there that you need to worry with now though. Just look at getting the essential textbooks that you'll use right away. Can usually find them online for decent prices.

You'll quickly find out that everyone has their opinion and personal preferences as to what sort of book they like. Some people go and buy every single board review type book and do a lot of studying from those.

Got ya. Thanks for all your help, even in the midst of all your impending finals. Congrats, btw, on finishing all of your OSCEs. I heard it was a fun one.

I apologize for asking this in this forum - but anyone who lives in Bradenton - I was wondering if you could give me some info on this neighborhood, location..

I am real interested in a townhouse for my family and located on:

E 72nd Street. Zip code: 34201. This subdivision is called 'Sabal Bay'.

I know the elementary school is pretty good and I was told that there are lots of name-brand stores being built in that area. Apparently it's about a mile from Lakewood Ranch.

I wish I could fly to Bradenton for a day..but it's just not very feasible for me right now. If anyone could give me some info, I will greatly appreciate it.

Please PM me.

ha ,ha arn't you the funny one today!!! But as far as kids coming along, most likely anything I would enjoy doing would be enjoyable to the children as well, (believe me- I live in a very G rated world) so.........don't use the kids as an excuse to not hang out with me

 I'll have to email u when the time gets closer to let u know what our plans are... I'm thinking either coquina beach or bbq at my house?! We usually do something with my sister's kids too, so as long as you can tolerate a 2yr old, 5 yr old, and few teens, it's all good!

nlax30: Thanks for the heads up on the 2008-09 Required Books List.

To those of you interested in what some current students thought about what books are important, not used often at all, and any other information regarding the purchase of books, posted below are some comments from nlax30, DragonWell, and scpod posted earlier in this thread and shown here now for convenience. Hope this information helps people when deciding what to buy!

Also, if anyone does happen to start purchasing books if they could post what deals they are getting on what books here we can compare what we find to help lower the cost.

Again, to current students, if you have any additional input about these books or the lesson plan please share with us, all of your comments are greatly appreciated.

These are ones I think I used during the first semester:

-Gray's Anatomy for Students Drake
-Color Atlas of Anatomy Rohen 0781790131 --
-Basic Medical Biochemistry Marks 0781721458
-Behavioral Science in Medicine Fadem 0781736692 <--just a small book, didn't use much though, could just use the library's copy
-Mosby's Guide to Physical Exam Pkg Seidel 0323043208
-The Developing Human Moore 0721694128 <-- Grudgingly, it's a badly written book
-Medical Genetics Jorde 0323040357
-Histology: A Text and Atlas Ross 0781772214
-The Immune System Parham 0815340931 <-- Wasn't sure, don't THINK I used it during 1st semester though, you will 2nd semester
-Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease Kumar 0721601871 (they make a slightly smaller one people called "Teenage Path", not as wordy/intimidating
-Textbook Medical Physiology Guyton 0721602401
-Basic and Clinical Pharmacology Katzung 0071451536

Other books I used:

- I ended up getting a dictionary but wish I didn't. I got Dorlands and don't like it at all. In the very beginning of PBL you'll be looking up a lot of medical terms and a dictionary can helpful, especially if your facilitator doesn't like people using laptops, but both the dictionaries have online sites with the same material.

- Mosby's Diagnostic Lab Manual - Having some sort of lab/test manual is helpful to have. There's a couple different ones in the library so you could always hold off and see which one you like better. Plus there are sites online with pretty much the same level of information.

-I got the small handheld books for both Guyton Physio and Path. You'll see them eventually, just really small versions that sort of summarize and hit on the main parts of each chapter. Definitely not enough to study from, but I'll sometimes use them to review a chapter after I've read it or to do a real quick read of another chapter that I haven't picked for a test.

And then come 2nd semester you'll add on Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases and more Immunology. I would assume most of the books they'd keep the same but there could be some changes.

As always different people used different books, and some people used review type books more than others. I think the library here has pretty much all the books on our list, plus a bunch of others so you can always read in the library and see how you like a book before you go and buy it.

Standard disclaimer: just my opinion, results may vary, blah, blah, blah...

REQUIRED (and you will pretty much need them)
-Even though I think there are better books for some of these subjects, because of the way tests are written and learning issues are selected (by chapter), it's probably going to be tough to avoid buying and using these texts at least to some extent.

Textbook Medical Physiology Guyton 0721602401
Mosby's Guide to Physical Exam Pkg Seidel 0323043208
Basic Medical Biochemistry Marks 0781721458
Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases Blumenfeld 0878930604
Behavioral Science in Medicine Fadem 0781736692
Twelve Lead ECG Garcia 0763712841
Basic and Clinical Pharmacology Katzung 0071451536

The Developing Human Moore 0721694128
***The 8th edition will publish in November 2007. 1416037063
-When I went through embryo, we had lectures. I don't know how imp't this text is with the new design of the course.

One of the following: IM book
-everybody has their favorite IM book, mine is personally the Lange CMDT

Cecil Textbook of Medicine Goldman 072169652X
***The 23rd edition will publish in August 2007
Harrisons Principles of Internal Medicine Kasper 0071402357
Lange Current Medical Diagnosis and Treament

One of the following: Path book
-Robbins is clearly the accepted standard here, but I think you can make a pretty good case that Rubin is in some ways a better text for the needs of undergraduate medical students, and Robbins is a bit more of a reference/residency work. Do be aware, though, that learning issues will be chosen out of Robbins, so if you go with Rubin, you may have to do some translating of chapters, page numbers, etc.

Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease Kumar 0721601871
or
Rubin's Pathology Rubin 0781795168

One or more of the following: Anatomy Atlas
you need an anatomy atlas or two
Color Atlas of Anatomy Rohen 0781790131
Netter (get it free when you join SOMA)

REQUIRED (and somewhat useful?)

Gray's Anatomy for Students Drake 0443066124
In general I find reading an anatomy textbook puts me straight to sleep. Anatomy is so heavy on memorization I just went straight to a board review text and did my best to memorize it and the lectures. Gray's does have some nice pictures, but I still prefer Moore's Clinical Anatomy for the blue box clinical correlations.
Histology: A Text and Atlas Ross 0781772214
Never got into this book, just used lectures and review books.
The Immune System Parham 0815340931
Medical Genetics Jorde 0323040357
Seems like a decent book, never ended up choosing many learning issues from it, perhaps b/c much of the info is covered elsewhere

REQUIRED (and Not Useful)

Stedman Medical Dictionary Stedman 0781733901
-plenty of online sources, wikipedia is your friend
Integrative Medicine Rakel 1416029540
-this is a big interest of mine, so i wish I could recommend buying this book, but at this point it's just not used nearly enough to warrant the investment.
Medical Microbiology Mims 0323035752
-this microbiology book could be improved by including information on microbiology
Neuroanatomy: An Atlas of Structure Haines (05/07) 0781763282
-Blumenfield has plenty of pictures.
Medical Nutrition and Disease Hark 0632046589
-not used. I think I maybe saw a group pick one learning issue from it once.
Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine Ward
-most people have never even opened this book. Seriously.
An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment DiGiovanna 0781742935
-anything imp't will be given to you in a powerpoint. you won't have time to read it in a book too.

Supplemental and Very Highly Recommended

Problem Based Microbiology Nath 072160630X
Dr. Nath is a great teacher. This book presents the perfect amount of info in an interesting way.
Pathohysiology of Heart Disease Lilly 0781763215
This book is the bomb for understanding everything abut cardio. I wish there was a book like this for each body system
Goljan Rapid Review Pathology
I think they're teaching about Goljan in kindergarten now, aren't they? Sooner or later, you will want this book.
Robbins Review of Pathology
Guyton Review of Physiology
These two question books are very useful, as it is not uncommon for very similar questions to appear on PBL tests.
Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology - Examination and Board Review
As above, essential questions, and much more to the point than the "big" pharm book. To me pharm is 95% memorization, so I used this as my primary resource and only referred to the big book for clarification.(ie never)
Savarese OMT Review
Again, the best source of questions for OMM. Very helpful for test and board prep.
Mosby's Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory Tests Pagana 0323039030
There are quite a few different lab books out there, I personally use a different one, but having one will definitely help in PBL.
First Aid for the Boards, Various Board Review Books
There are different schools of thought on this; personally I used review books from day one and am very glad that I did. My feeling was that I would need them sooner or later for board review, so I might as well use them as a resource during class. The thing is, IMO, it's imp't to use them right, and this varies by subject.

Just plain Supplemental
Just in case you need more...

Just a note about books:

Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment (CMDT) that DW mentioned and the 10th edition of Katzung's Pharm are available in entirety online on StatRef. You'll get access to them when you get to school.

I wouldn't buy the pharm book. Read it online once, then use the mini pharm to study from. You'll do just fine with that. CMDT is a good book to have but I just print out the current topics that we are covering in PBL and bring that to class. I lug around enough books anyway. Note- make extensive use of Up-to-date (also available online when you get here) because it is very current, includes lots of studies and references them, includes lots of charts and algorythms, and you can print out the stuff you need.

Remember too that the only things you'll need for a couple of weeks are anatomy, histo and an atlas. Bring the Mosby's Diagnostics book to your first PBL session because you'll spend a lot of time at first learning what types of tests are out there and wat they do. Make sure someone brings a computer (or a dictionary- your whole group will only need one) to look up the new words. You'll use Physiology a lot right off the bat. Embryo and Genetics are used a bunch in the first few cases because you have a bunch of baby cases. You'll actually pick a bunch of Anatomy and Histo issues in the beginning too. If your cases are like ours were you won't need Immuno or Path the first couple of months. You won't need Neuro until 2nd semester. The ECG book you'll need second year. I never bought any of the books for the mini courses or any of the OMM books. The Savarese one DW mentioned, though, is pretty good. Don't buy any of the mini course books now. I only bought the ones for Behavioral Science but you'll have a new professor for that since the old one is retiring. Never bought the nutrition book. I heard that some people picked chapters from it, though. Can't think of anything else to say right now. As for supplements, look at soemone elses before you decide to spend the money on them, but buy Goljan and Nath's book-- you'll be glad you did.

Remember, this is just my opinion. Your actual experience may turn out to be different
