LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Definitely keep the get-together planning as light as possible. You don't want to try to get a ton of people together at an obscure location in an area they just moved to and make them bring food.
The past couple of years, it has become an unofficial tradition for each class to meet at Applebee's the night of the Pre-Orientation. There's one on 64 and one 70 so they are pretty easy to find. All we had to do was call them up and schedule a date and told them we were bringing our LECOM group like the past couple of years and they sectioned off part of the restaurant for us. That way no one had to worry about bringing anything- all they had to do was find the place and eat/socialize.
Usually the SGA has some kind of Welcome to School festivities too. If you guys want a beach day, by all means go for it. Just keep in mind: more simplicity = more people.

Don't worry about dates too much now, June will be sending more emails out as the big day gets closer.

So, the thread has died over the last few days... we need a dumb poll to get everyone back. So:

When are you moving?
How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)?
Biggest fear going into this?
Are you leaning towards any specialy as of now (I'd be interested to see how many people change in the course of our 4 years)?
Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations?

OK, that's as creative as I can get right now, feel free to expound upon this!

I thought of another: What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of?

When are you moving? Move in day is June 30th!

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? I have all of one of our required books in my posession, I have another that I just bought on the way, and that is it. I don't even have clothes that I can wear to class yet.

Biggest fear going into this? That I will find out that I am really stupid, despite my certainty that I am brilliant. Oh yeah, getting booted out would be pretty bad too.

Are you leaning towards any specialy as of now (I'd be interested to see how many people change in the course of our 4 years)? Right now, OB/Perinatology although I also have interests in surgery and endocrine, among other things. I will be one of those flip floppers until the end probably.

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations? Yes, because my son will be in school, I don't want to uproot the family too many times. I don't mind if I have to drive or even travel for a short period of time, but I want most of my rotations to be in reasonable proximity to LECOM.

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of? I am a terrible speller!! I ran for student council office in high school and made a flyer with student spelled wrong (studant??). So, when you see that I spell things really obscurely on here, don't laugh. (or laugh and just don't tell me about it)

Where are you living? I'm going to be in Greenfield Plantation just north of 64 from school.

Any pets with you? Three kitties of varying sizes and fur configurations 😛

I think most of us are beyond deciding if PBL is right for us, but maybe there are a lot of viewers who don't post but still have some questions. This is really for all of us, I think it's pretty interesting, check out the thread about Problem Based Learning (PBL) found here.

Of particular interest to everyone here is my post, a Q&A on the LECOM-B PBL Pathway found here. Basically, I tried compiling the important information found in the last 39 pages of this thread into an organized Q&A to add incite into how to approach PBL the best.

Hope this helps some people, lets keep drawing all the information from the current students as we can and I'll add to the document.

When are you moving? July 19th! I want to earn a paycheck as long as possible.

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? I have pretty much all of one of our required books, and also a lot of the board prep books SDN folks have recommended. I am still (note the word) trying to read the Drake Anatomy book to get a head start, but all these TV shows...Grrr. Family Guy!

Biggest fear going into this? I will fail a class or my studying style has been wrong for me all these years! 😱

Are you leaning towards any specialty as of now (I'd be interested to see how many people change in the course of our 4 years)?
I work for a healthcare company in the cardiac monitoring division, so I definitely lean toward Cardiology. Hey, it's the only part of your body that doesn't need any motivation to start working!

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations? As much as possible. My boyfriend will live/work in Bradenton with me, so I want to keep close. I will live 1 minute from Blake Medical Center, hopefully I can get in there for rotations. I will travel to Orlando or other parts of Florida for one or two rotations, but not out of FL. I didn't move from Ohio to Florida just to move back!!!

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of?
I'm a huge clutz. There's not one time when I eat I don't drop something in my lap; or I trip over things and get random bruises all the time (I don't drink often at all!). Sometime I will appear to be listen to you but I will ask you to repeat what you just said, because my mind went to vacation somewhere. So for the less patient bodies, please forgive me beforehand!

Where are you living?

Sun Chase Apartments on W59th Ave. It's right across from Manatee Rec Center and a dog park! And I can see the Bradenton water tower from the street front of our apartment.

Any pets with you?
One fat rottweiler and two fat kitties! All three happy and lazy as hell!

Keep it coming future LECOMers! Yeah, a month and a half almost! :hardy:

WOW! Just read thru the Q&As and now I'm really excited to get started!

When are you moving?

Well, moving truck picks up from Portland June 20th, jump on a plane to Knoxville to get most of the rest of my stuff ready, moving truck picks up from Knoxville June 30th, I leave for Bradenton July 1st, whew

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? have all my books, have an omm table (practice at my house), have diagnostic kit, have pretty much everything

Biggest fear going into this? Same as above, that I'll flunk out, be kicked out and cry

Are you leaning towards any specialy as of now (I'd be interested to see how many people change in the course of our 4 years)? I'm open, but very interested in Ortho right now. I know I will not do obgyn, other than that, I'm trying to keep an open mind

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations? Yes, for most of them, will be needing to do several military rotations, but other than those

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of
Oh wow, don't get me started, I could go on and on, if you all have followed me on this board at all you know that I obviously have no shame and no problem making a fool out of myself

When are you moving? I'm here to stay-- I live ~40 min away and will be making the trip everyday... atleast I'll have time to enjoy my coffee on the trip
drinking.gif

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? I'm missing the Anatomy Atlas, other than that have all the required, a couple suppl, and a few review books... and just found out today I have an OMM table 😀 (thanks, Laura)

Biggest fear going into this? I know it's going to be tough, but I'm sure I'll manage. I'm most scared of missing time with my little ones, they're getting so big so fast... being able to manage my time has me most worried

Are you leaning towards any specialy as of now (I'd be interested to see how many people change in the course of our 4 years)? (yaye Kate!) Right now, something in woman's health... ob/gyn, RE, perinatology... I like ob/gyn cause your day is always different, and u get to do surgery. I would go crazy doing same thing all day.

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations? I'd prefer rotations in Tampa/Brandon-- but anything w/in an hour is game

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of? (this group is gonna be a mess 👍) I'm pretty goofy, and in school I always seemed to be the last person to know what we're supposed to be doing... 😱 Everyone would start putting stuff together for lab, and I'm just sitting there... are we suppose to be doing something?! Prob too busy blabbing away 😉

Where are you living? In Tampa

Any pets with you? A fish... and wild cats in my yard, but I don't know if they count. I do feed them every now and again, though

Hey guys,

So there's been a lot of talk about finding apartments and renting on here. Has anyone considered buying a place? I have no idea where to start in terms of neighborhoods to look in, etc. I'm partial to a condo because I really don't want any household chores, etc, to deal with. Anyways, curious if anyone's been shopping and if so, what areas are you looking in?

Thanks!

When are you moving? My parents are leaving to head back home on July 17th

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? I'm not buying any of the books yet because I've been bouncing around with a place to live. I almost got a really nice apartment, but lost it just last night. Sucks.

Biggest fear going into this? That I will remit. I don't believe that I'm an idiot, but I can definitely see it happening. I have had dreams about it, believe it or not.

Are you leaning towards any specialy as of now (I'd be interested to see how many people change in the course of our 4 years)? I'm looking at any kind of specialty involving pediatrics--IM, Anesthesiology, Radiology, EM. I love kids, but I hate seeing people give birth (bye-bye OB/GYN). I'll take them after they're cleaned, thank you.

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations? I'm flexible. It would make things easier, but you can't always do what's easy to get what you want in life. I'm looking to go wherever.

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of? That I cannot talk to girls that I like. It didn't used to be a problem when I was engaged, but being single makes it harder. Other than that, I'm pretty easy to get along with and outgoing.

Where are you living? Still deciding that at the moment.

Any pets with you? Hopefully not, but we'll see if my parents force a cat upon me.

When are you moving? We are currently looking at July 15th. It's cheaper for a moving truck during the week and I want to earn as much extra money here as I can since we are going to be empty-pocketed for the next four years at least. He is moving down in September when the lease is up... 🙁 Man, I'm going to be lonely, but at least I'll have nothing to do but study for the first 6 weeks. *Thinking positive*

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? I'm trying not to buy most of the "required texts" though I'm a sucker for a good deal and if I see a book under $25 I almost HAVE to buy it. I have bought all the "recommended by last year's students list" books.

Biggest fear going into this? I am so glad I'm not the only one who is both excited and TERRIFIED about medical school. Until now my biggest fear was that I was going into it as the only person who was afraid (does that make sense?)... I guess I would say I'm most afraid of failing my first 11 weeks (anatomy!! 😱) because I have a horrible memory and that's pretty much entirely memorization.

Are you leaning towards any specialty as of now (I'd be interested to see how many people change in the course of our 4 years)? Recently I've been throwing around the ideas of Anesthesiology, Radiology, and Psychiatry... I thought I wanted to do OB/GYN and I really, really like it, but the malpractice is just way too crazy high and 76% of them have been sued at least once!

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations?
Oh, I don't really mind either way. I figure it doesn't matter where we live, because we don't have any children right now and those with children in school should get to stay in Florida. We have family in Florida, Michigan, Indiana, Oregon, Washington, and Texas so one of those would be just fine.

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of? I don't really get embarrassed, though I am really shy at first so I'm going to have to be cautious of that in my PBL group, especially the first couple months when we only meet once a week.

Where are you living? We are thinking about getting a condo in the middle of the city because we don't know where he will be working and it's just as likely he'll be working in St. Pete or Sarasota.

Any pets with you? Port-a-kitty.

Has anyone heard anything about the new list? I'm getting pretty nervous that time is winding down before school starts. Everyone seems to have a place to live, books, finished with pre-matriculation stuff and I'm still hoping for an acceptance... ahhhh! 😱:scared:

I e-mailed Heather yesterday. She just responded saying I should refer to the e-mail by Annette. Hallelujah, all my questions have been answered!!

When are you moving? Probably the weekend of July 18.

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? I have one of the required books, the rest I think I'll wait to buy.

Biggest fear going into this? That I won't manage my time well and consequently fail.

Are you leaning towards any specialy as of now? I'm really into surgery (maybe vascular) right now. Unless the reimbursement climate changes for PCPs soon, then I will most likely specialize.

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations? Probably not.

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of? I am incredibly impatient sometimes.

Where are you living? I'm not sure yet.

Any pets with you? My maltese/yorkie, Daisy.

Don't lose hope just yet...there's a bunch of us playing the waiting game.

Don't lose hope just yet...there's a bunch of us playing the waiting game.

Hi Punchap, are you still waiting also? (perhaps as part of the last ranked list) You mentioned having a move date already in your prior post.

When are you moving? July 15th!!! All the way from Tampa, FL. haha. 😉

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? I have an ebook of Mark's Clinical Biochemistry. Haven't purchased any of the required books yet. I need to get another credit card first. LoL. But did we get our req. book list yet??? Maybe I should check my mail!

Biggest fear going into this? Not being able to keep up. I'm sure there must be a way, though. I'm actually more anxious about not being able to spend much time with my family and friends.

Are you leaning towards any specialty as of now? Not really sure. I'm interested in GP, Endocrinology, Pathology, and Anesthesiology at the moment (Although I just watched the movie "Awake" last night and cringed at the thought of putting someone under who was still conscious during surgery, but paralyzed. Anesthetic awareness sounds horrific.😱)

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations? Not sure about this yet either. I love Florida, so I'll probably try and stay somewhere around the Bradenton/St.Pete/Tampa/Clearwater area.

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of? Two things (probably more): (1) I have an automatic habit of playing with my hair when I read (2) when I'm sitting down I have to always have something in my lap (i.e. purse, sweater, pillow, etc.) for no particular reason. I'm just a weirdo. haha.

Where are you living? Colonial Grand @ Lakewood Ranch :luck:

Any pets with you? My roomie is bringing a cute little puppy, named Emmi. I'm looking forward to having a pet around during all this studying madness. Haven't had one in a year.🙂

I currently have an acceptance to LECOM-B, but I'm waitlisted at my top choice, OUCOM. So, if I get off OUCOM's list, I will be giving up my LECOM-B seat. Sorry for the confusion. 🙂

In case some people here don't have some of the important links that might have gotten lost in the previous posts/pages, here are some good links that might help you.

I can't think of any others at the moment, but I hope this helps!

The 3rd one on that list is the Book List. Enjoy!

no prob; good luck on OUCOM (for the sake of both of us)!

When are you moving? The weekend of July 5th!

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? I believe I have a good background from undergrad. Besides that I have not looked at a textbook in two years so this will be interesting! I am not buying any of the books till I get down there so I don't have to move them!

Biggest fear going into this? That I can't adapt to PBL studying!

Are you leaning towards any specialy as of now (I'd be interested to see how many people change in the course of our 4 years)? Currently interested in Pediatric Diagnostic Radiology, but I know how competitive radiology is so I would be happy to do general pediatrics also!

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations? I don't really know at this point!

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of? I am 100% OCD, ADD, and 97% extraverted and I don't hide it well! (And similar to BClumas) You can usually figure out what guy I am interested in pretty quick because I will not talk to them!

Where are you living? Yacht Club

Any pets with you? I don't do the whole feeding and cleaning up after pets well. So I will not have any!

So let us recap. Jah Jah and I are both extroverted, shy when talking to a member of the opposite gender we may find attractive, enjoy pediatrics, going to LECOM-B, and are unsure if we are going to stay in the area for rotations. It seems like a match made on SDN for me.

Haha.. no seriously it made me laugh. Are you on AIM at all Jah Jah?

As you notice I don't post very often, that is the reason I posted the above to note the similarities! This just means great minds think and act alike! I have not used AIM since high school which was 6 years ago. I don't think my account is even still active, well at least I could not tell you what my screen name was.

Well that's a bummer. If you ever decide to remake an AIM account, PM me with your name and we can chat more there. There are a bunch of us that chat (I have 22 people from LECOM-B on my buddy list so far) on an almost nightly basis, and we get bored of each other. We always enjoy fresh bloo.. new faces!

When are you moving? I should be there around July 15th.

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? I didnt buy anything yet.

Biggest fear going into this? Im having this dream that Anatomy will be tooo much and Ill just never get it.

Are you leaning towards any specialy as of now (I'd be interested to see how many people change in the course of our 4 years)? Nothing for sure yet but Im interested in pediatrics, oncology, internal medicine and maybe cardiology

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations? Idk

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of? Im really bad at spelling. You know how during the interview we sat in a PBL session and there was one person writing on the board, just some advice I dont think you'd want me to be doing that!!

Where will I be living? Its a really nice place I got last night (sorry BCLumas) close to the colonial grand condos.

You! Haha.. congrats on that condo man, it's really nice. I'm definitely gonna come over and spend time hanging out tho. Especially 'cause 2 of my friends (our friends, now) are living in the Colonial Grand. Well, 3 if we count Amanda.

There was a link posted on here, it's on the SGA site.

I saw someone put on SGA site that the list we have may not be the correct list?! I hope it doesn't change too much if that's the case... if so, I guess I will use what I have as supplementals.

So, do they send us an "official" list at some point?

I think they'll send something next week as Heather said in her email to me. I would expect it soon.

I'm sure someone's already asked this...(sorry if so!)

Has anyone received his or her financial aid information?

Thanks!

So, do they send us an "official" list at some point?

Yea, they'll send you the "official" list an one of the email updates. The list currently on the site was taken from straight from what they posted on our note server not too long ago. And from looking at it it's already been slightly changed from what we had last year so I would think that what's there now is it......unless they decide to do any other last minute changes.

I'm sure someone's already asked this...(sorry if so!)

Has anyone received his or her financial aid information?

Thanks!

I contacted Heather and was told that all of this information would be coming to us after graduation on June 8. This is because their office is so swamped that they can only do the best they can while they have all this paperwork in there. I would expect an email about this next week or shortly thereafter.

You! Haha.. congrats on that condo man, it's really nice. I'm definitely gonna come over and spend time hanging out tho. Especially 'cause 2 of my friends (our friends, now) are living in the Colonial Grand. Well, 3 if we count Amanda.

How far is it from Colonial Grand? Can car pooling and sharing internet become options?

Hrm.. it's about a mile away, so carpooling is a definite possibility. I don't know if they've invented a med student budget router than can span a mile plus yet, but who knows what you can find on eBay these days.

ok one of out of the two is not bad. do you know if anyone is living closer than a mile?

I don't know specifically anyone. The ones that I know are all living a mile or more away. Yacht Club is about 11-12 miles from your place. It's on the other side of LECOM. Hope that helps!

Maaaan, you guys are not going to believe this. There was a huge gas tanker accident on I-75 heading south (from Tampa to Bradenton), and the fuel burned the interstate that now has to be completely replaced...

How the heck am I suppose to get to school?! And it happened at the I-75 and 301-S junction, the only two main roads that can me into Bradenton 😱. I'm a little freaked, they say the repairs will take ~6 weeks, but who knows how long it will really take. This is soo not good.

And btw, if any of you guys are thinking of flying into Tampa, don't! Use the Bradenton/Sarasota airport...

Yea, it's a mess. Pretty much all the local news have been talking about.

But by Monday there supposed to have a couple southbound lanes open on the northbound side. They only have to replace part/most of the southbound side I think.

There are some detours though, like taking 41 across the river into downtown Bradenton (near Manatee Memorial Hospital), so if you are going to be traveling from north of the river to school in the next ~6 weeks you'll probably want to look up those other routes.

That's craziness! I'm moving in 6 weeks! Moving + detours = no bueno. 🙁

When are you moving? Sometime around mid July. I haven't figured out the exact date.

How prepared are you for classes (books, etc)? I have not purchased any books yet. I figure those are easy to buy when I get there. Especially I may also want to 'test drive' some of the books in the library reference section before I make any purchases. Otherwise I feel pretty prepared for lecture based courses since I just finished post-bacc in LECOM-E. But the PBL stuff I am definately not prepared for (but I do not think anyone really can be prepared for PBL).

Biggest fear going into this? I have multiple, but here are my biggest two... 1) I am a s l o w reader so I fear falling behind in PBL. 2) I worry wether I am making the right choice by dragging my significant other so far away from both of our families.

Are you leaning towards any specialy as of now (I'd be interested to see how many people change in the course of our 4 years)? I would like to do peds and then maybe specialize in Ped-cardiology since my main reason for getting into medicine was because of my own Pediatric cardiologist. But really I suspect that I will change my mind multiple times!

Do you want to stay in the Bradenton area for rotations? No Idea! I have lived in PA my whole life so we'll have to see how much I like the south!

What's one thing that we will learn about you that you are embarrassed of? Hmm... just one?!

Where are you living? Yacht Club!

Any pets with you? My gf has a dworf bunny that is most likely making the trip. Although it primarily stays in my gf classroom (she's an elementary school teacher) And we may get a puppy once we settle in a little and have an idea of what our schedules are like.

I like Jah Jah don't post too often mainly because I fear getting too attached to all of you wonderful people! I am currently on the waitlist at another school closer to home, though I would rather go to LECOM-B. I am remaining on the waitlist, however, b/c I am waiting to see where my gf has the best job offer at. Although I secretly hope that I dont get off the waitlist so that I have to goto school w/you guys! 😀

No worries-- no matter if you come here or get into your other school, we can always keep each other posted on our progress through SDN and still root each other on... and we'll only post bad things about you behind your back when we see you're not logged on

Yeah, my husband is staying just off that exit. He passed the spot where it happened a few moments prior to the accident. He saw a large plume of smoke in the sky as he was pulling in the driveway, he said it was pouring at the time. Messes up alot of peoples commutes.

To those of you planning on living at the Yacht Club, do not know where you are living, or know of people who are not sure where they are living for when we begin school, the Yacht Club just began a new deal on their Curacao apartments.

2 bedroom, 2 bathroom originally priced at 1289/mo. with the month of July free if you sign the lease by June 15th (this deal expires today). A better deal if you don't plan on moving in until July is to pay the new lowered price starting today at 1139/mo. with no month free.

The deal only applies to the Curacao apartments and begins today, so I suspect availability to drop rapidly. It ends up saving me around 500 dollars because I don't plan on moving in until around July 12th, I don't get the month free but I don't start paying the reduced rate until July 12th either. Again, to those who already paid their security deposit and such on a Curacao, look into changing your plan if this is advantageous. To those of you who are still looking for a place to live, this is an even better deal on one of the nicer places in the area.

Wow, thank God he wasn't a few minutes later. I feel so bad for the truck driver-- I haven't heard anything about how he is doing, but I know he sustained terrible burns. My heart goes out to him and his family.

Has anyone heard news on the new ranked alternate list?

Yeah, my dad was in a car fire and was terribly burned. This is really one of the worst things that I think can happen to you! He was inpatient for several months then at a rehab center for a year, and still is completely disabled (lost most of his fingers). He remembers everything from his accident, and remembers the terrible pain of being burned, and the pain of the debridements. Not to mention that when he was in the hospital he was on so much pain killers that he was halucinating that dead people were coming into his room. I heard that he was stable though.

That's craziness! I'm moving in 6 weeks! Moving + detours = no bueno. 🙁

I commute that way everyday. Wednesday and Thursday what normally took 1 hour took 3. Yesterday, I got out of the psych ward early (that probably sounds bad 😉) and beat rush hour - made it home in my normal time with no traffic problems at all.

It's big news right now, but I doubt you'll have any bigger problems in six weeks than the normal slowdown you see whenever they work on the freeway.

After a few more weeks of rotations, I may be ready to sign voluntarily...😀

Actually, it's been a blast, seeing lots of interesting stuff, learning tons and working with several great docs. After the Step 1 push, at this point I'm ecstatic to be doing anything other than sitting around on my a$$ and studying for 15 hours a day. I'm sure that after a few more weeks of getting up at 4am I'll be wishing I could just sit around and read...
