LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
First off, I'd like to thank Digitl and BC for taking the time to talk about the school. Any of you reading can follow their advice and state their honest opinions. After today, I do understand their excitement.

It is a great place. I feel lukewarm about how my interview went, but that is a personal thing. Your day starts out with the standard introduction. The place differs in that, before you enter, you meet a (very kind) security guard and sign in. They give you a folder with much of the information that other schools like to leave out, such as clinical rotation stuff. You are located in a conference room filled with breakfast foods, coffee, and water with a great amount of hospitality from everyone that works there. You go through the basic introduction spiel and get separated into groups. You then split up and do your interviews. I have to say, mine felt like more of a formal interview than other places but that was just the nature of the beast. My interviewers were very laid back guys and by no means tried to sink me, I just froze on some questions with a lot of "ummmmms". After your interview, you head back down and are divided into groups. They take you upstairs and let you sit in on a PBL session with second year students. I was welcomed with open arms from the facilitator and all of the students. I didn't feel out of place at all, and I even got to throw in input about stupid little things. Evidently, today is "talk like a pirate day", so that was the thing that lightened the mood. Lots of pirate talk. (Including naming 3 pirates to get test results)

After all of that, you head back downstairs and wait around for a bit. You then have lunch with some students, whom eventually take you on a tour of the campus. The greatest part was getting to see OMM in action. After the tour, you end up down below for more talk involving housing, financial aid, student life, etc.

Everyone was very very very nice. I really can't sing enough praises about the place. I don't know if I'll end up there, but I can say without hesitation you'll end up with a quality education. Nobody seemed unhappy. Stressed and exhausted from studying yes, but unhappy no. All of the students are very self directed and don't rely on information being shoveled in by lecture. I had previous experiences with PBL, so I am familiar with how it works but it is nice to see people learning/using skills that'll help with their education for the rest of their life.

As a final bonus, they are evidently very fast with a final decision. We were told one week from today.

I hope that is a fair review of the experience. The school does not hold your hand and while proud of their scores and curriculum, doesn't ram it down your throat. They simply make it very clear that you WILL have to read a lot and be prepared to study on your own, as well as develop teamwork abilities that may have not been present before.

Hey, I think that I saw you in passing in the hallway when you guys were going on your tour. I was going to stop in at lunch, but things are hectic right now. I assume you were the real tall guy. Hope that all went well. I felt unsure about my interview also, but this year I have met with both of my interviewers who said that they remembered me and even remembered details about my interview, so I guess it went better than I had thought.

So, good luck to everyone that already interviewed! For those accepted, let me know if you need any more input on the school. Have a good weekend and don't stress waiting for your decision!

I had my interview on Tuesday but won't have my D.O. letter in for a while. I wonder how being on hold for a few weeks will affect my decision when my app does go to the adcom. I'm gonna go to the AOA and start washing cars for recommendations.

You should've introduced yourself. I was the tallest person in the group by far. It has been close a few times but today was not one of them. I love meeting new people. It gets me over my social phobia. I tend to overcompensate by talking to everyone. I did feel good about the place, and I don't think I gave a "bad" impression. I just had lots of "ummmms" and pauses that I normally wouldn't have had. It is definitely a hindsight type scenario. I just hope my description of the place is helpful to some people. I really don't sugar coat things and if I hated the place I'd tell you and I'd tell you what things in particular. I know people from schools read these boards and my name on here is not a secret. I hold myself accountable for what I say, so when I speak poorly or highly of a place, you guys can take it as a solid word. I have high standards and I was very impressed with LECOM-B and the positive voice the entire time. I'm not going to lie and say I will go there for sure, heck, it was my third interview but it was well organized and enjoyable. I have no regrets about driving the 4+ hours for it.

When I interviewed at Erie they didn't have my letters yet. I think that it took me about a month to get them in, well it took my school a month to get my committee letter done. I was waitlisted there, and then removed myself from the waitlist. But, I don't know if the LOR had anything to do with it. I really didn't like the school when I was there so I'm pretty sure I wasn't overly enthusiastic in my interview. It's so early in the game, I'm sure a little wait won't hurt your chances.

If you're really interested in the school, I'd reccomend sending a letter of interest. They really look at those and consider them when reviewing your file. I sent one after my interview and got a call from the directot of student affairs at the time to let me know that she really enjoyed my letter and I was accepted(there's a new director this year though, so I'm not sure if he will be making any calls). You don't have to say that you would definately go there if accepted. Just let them know what you liked about the school, and why you feel that it would be a good fit for you in a very general way.

I'm really excited for you all! This whole process is so stressful while you're in it, but once you get an acceptance under your belt it all changes.

I was running to a study group I think or I would have... I did say hi to Heather in the hall though by the PBL rooms. By the way... Heather is awesome! If you guys ever need anything she is soo helpful and friendly. Don't worry about any social phobias, if you come here, everyone has been soo friendly. I have really met most of my class already and alot of the 2nd years, and though we have a few quirky people, I think that the selection committee does a really good job of picking out people that will work together well in a small group setting. I really have a great PBL group too, which is important since these are my partners for the next semester, and we're responsible for eachothers learning.

Hey, did they talk to you about SDN at all in the interview? I remember at my interview they encouraged it, but when we started class, they discouraged it. Just curious what you are being told.

though we have a few quirky people...

I wonder if Kate's talking about me...hmmm... 😀

Glad you had a good day Mosspoh. As he said, I really have no regrets, other than not knowing enough anatomy...back to the books!

I joked about SDN during the PBL session, but that was about it. (They WERE talking like pirates afterall) I wasn't quite as famous during this interview as some of the others. 😉 I did talk sports with Heather for a while. I asked her what it was like being a sox fan in tampa land during this race they have going on. She certainly loves her sox.

(They WERE talking like pirates afterall)

I saw that on the news, but I thought it was just a restaurant thing?? It would have made for a much more interesting day if we all talked like pirates! Can't imagine Dr. Krueger talking like a pirate though, that would be fun!

Waaaaaiiiit...was this pirate thing a city/state/country wide thing? How did I miss this????

Oh right. Studying.

It made the PBL session pretty interesting. I forgot the facilitators name. He is a pediatrician by training I believe. Very nice guy. The entire group was very welcoming.

It's international.

On an unrelated note, I would like to thank BCLumas and digitlnoize for meeting with me the day before my interview. I was eager to visit LECOM-B and I when I arrived, everything seemed to be how I expected it to be. I've also noticed that the people in Bradenton/Sarasota as a whole were very friendly.

to LECOM-B students posting here: How many students are in your class?

I am wondering because I am just doing my ACOMAS application and doesnt want to be too late to be not competitive.

If you have any tips on doing the ACOMAS and LECOM secondary please PM me or post them here. Any info will be helpful

168 when we started. Now? Maybe near 155 to 160.

Best advice: Just be yourself. I didn't stress or over analyze my essays. I just wrote what I thought...

I think "Don't stress" and "Be yourself" should be one's motto for the entire process. Every school I have done that for and haven't tried, I've gotten an interview. 😛

147. Started with 163.

By the way, Scpod. If you're ever free and in the area at the same time (not during Anatomy, of course), we should all hit up a bar so we could pick your brains. If you don't mind, that is 😀

thanks for the tips.

hopefully I will see all you there 😀

I probably won't be around until I take the Peds and FP shelf exams on Dec 12th. That's on a Friday. You might be getting ready for finals or something by then. But, if you're free, I'll probably wanna have a beer or twelve after those two monsters are finished 🙂

Hey all, I understand that the adcom met today, so letters should be out tomorrow! Good luck to everyone that interviewed.

Kate "understands" this because we were told, kind of in passing during a lecture, that someone with great scores got rejected because the adcom didn't think they would do well in a PBL curriculum.

They do go out of their way to pick people who they think will succeed in PBL...so don't apply if you don't feel like PBL is for you.

That being said...I can't wait until anatomy LECTURE is over and I can get on to PBL...the reason I came here in the first place...

I think our anatomy class is great and all...just hard as hell...and most of us "Succeed at PBL Students" do not succeed as well at anatomy lectures 😀

So, does that little fountain lake thing outside have fish? I think it'd be the ultimate in dorkiness and destressing to sit out there with a fishing rod once in a while. I'm sure the staff would frown upon it though.

Don't hold your breath with webstar. My letters and sig page have been received, but it's not reflected in webstar.

sorry, meant to put this post under NSU

I think it does, but I don't think fishing is allowed. I don't recall actually hearing or seeing that rule though...although I haven't read the handbook THAT carefully...

I did see a guy fishing in this tiny pond just down the street by Publix though...that was odd.

I fish with my nephew in the little canals all the time. Its kind of fun. You do catch stuff...not stuff I'd eat, but oh well.

Ugh. That does not make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

I didn't want to stress anyone out that they were rejected by saying that 🙁

Oh. Right. Sorry. My bad.

Rest assured though, that they do a very good job of picking people that are right for PBL...so if you don't happen to be picked, it might be in your own best interest. Not everyone will excel in a PBL curriculum...

Depends on how hungry the alligators have been recently 😀.

They prefer to after dogs and deer. I ran over one last year by mistake, an alligator that is. I live in Florida, right next to a swamp and wildlife refuge. Gators don't scare me. 😉

There was talk the other day of having a giant keg party in the parking lot after anatomy is over.

We want to use the water in the lake to keep the keg cool, and this way, the next morning, we'll all wake up at school, dressed, and ready to face our first day of not anatomy.

Probably also against the rules though...what's with all these rules? No food or drink, have to dress up, no fishing, no keg parties in the parking lot, no sleeping in the parking lot...what's next?

They kinda frown on group sex in the PBL rooms too. Just fyi.

See, scpod, you have you to know how to work it. All it takes is a finely taken picture of a room where nothing is going on, some cardboard, a few fluorescent lamps, and a guy with some mad duct tape skills and you're set. You also might to think about placing a chair in the door knob and maybe even doing the whole rubber-band-on-the-door-knob-thing just so everyone knows not to go in there.

... Not that I've given this any thought...

...

How 'bout them Rays, huh?

Seriously though, once Anatomy is over I am sure that Digitlnoize, Kate, and myself will be a bit more available to answer questions and such. Sorry if there are any PMs I forgot to answer. I rarely even answer my phone anymore. *sigh*

Back to studying. Good luck to all!

Well, is one on one sex ok at least?

Boy, I'm deep in my cranium for a little and look what happens!

As long as you don't mind an audience. We do have the best security guards though, it may make their day a little more interesting to have something good to watch instead of the boring study sessions they're used to.

I have totally abandoned SDN and feel bad, but its good to see that our class is still on here and imparting their experiences onto the next group!!

By the way I hate embryo...just figured I would throw that out there!

A little exhibitionism never hurt anyone.

I still can't get far enough past hating anatomy to hate embryo. For now I just like a change, but I'm sure I'll get there eventually.

I got in!!! See you in Class

I got in!!! See you in Class

Congratulations! Was this your #1 choice overall? If you have any questions about the process from here on out, ask us. We all just got through it.

Congrats again and good luck to all other interviewers!

It's tied for number one with nova so I have alot to think about if I get in there too. I loved LECOM when I went there last week so ill just have to pray about the whole thing but I am super excited that I am going to become a doctor one day regardless. Thanks for your offer of support and im sure ill be using you and this forum in the near future.

I got in also!!!!

Did you guys get a phone call or an email?

well, your supposed to get a letter in the mail but since I had an interview in Colorado in a couple of weeks they called me on the phone so I wouldnt have to book the ticket if I knew I wanted LECOM instead of RVU. It was really nice of them being that I dont have to waste 500 bucks on a trip.

Now it makes my wait even more frustrating.

questions for the med student or anyone that did the ACOMAS recently.

I am having a little problem with the Experiences section. Is it like the AMCAS, where you put down what you did and what you got out of it or is it something different? and is there a limit to how many experiences i can add, for example the AMCAS has a max of 15?

I am new to the ACOMAS and I want to get this thing right the first time,
