LECOM-Bradenton Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lol I just checked the weather, supposed to be a chance of thunderstorms but it looks like just in the afternoon, so hopefully we will luck out. I'm bringing an umbrella just in case 🙂

o maaan, im sure hope they're wrong by one day. :luck:

Kinda bored at work today...tired of checking portals with no updates, ha.

So what do you guys find attractive about LECOM-B? Maybe we can learn more about the school this way and I feel like it's helpful to weigh pros between schools.

Me?

Tuition: $29,200 OOS aka The Low Low!

Boards: Earlier someone posted 100% pass rate on COMLEX Step 1 with highest average score, and 12/41 got 99th percentile on USMLE Step 1. This is a big one for me.

Very Flexible Rotations (I don't mind setting up my own, prefer it really)

Publix: 2 very close to the school, Whole Foods 30 mins away (shush, this matters to me, I like to cook and I've been in a Wal-Mart only city way too long )

Beaches (and good scuba sites possibly??)

i spent the whole day preparing and actually tried to stay off SDN cuz it was distracting haha. +1 on everything you said especially the beaches. so far, ive heard nothing but great things. the only cons that ive heard arent even really that bad (like no food in the study areas or something)

Yes this is my only bigggg issue because I eat so often. I can live with dress codes, but it might be tough for me to not be able to snack on a regular basis 😀 lol

i loove to snack so i def kno wut u mean haha. but hey, itll probably keep all of us in beach body shape!

I'm happy to report that no student has yet resorted to cannibalism due to the snacking restrictions. A classmate of mine did chew his own leg off to escape an administrative hour, but that's been rare. So far as I know. 😏

I've given my take on the infamous rules a few times, and I'm happy to do so again, but really it's one of those things that reflects the feeling you get from the place more than anything else. If you just get this feeling that you wouldn't like it here, it's easy to seize on the rules as ridiculous. If you like it here, they don't seem like a big deal.

FWIW, when I study at school, I often sit in the cafeteria so I can snack away... the only time it's difficult to do that is around lunch because it gets loud. But even during anatomy, there was plenty of time to run downstairs for coffee and a bagel in the 10 minutes between lectures.

So I'm sorry guys, but don't count on forced starvation to make your body stare-worthy when you take your shirt off in OMM lab.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

actually, its a couple of ur posts that have made me realize that the "cons" of this school aren't so bad at all. im really excited for LECOM!

As I've said many times before, the food and drink restrictions in hospitals are way more restrictive than anything at the school. Since the longest you're ever in class without a break is pretty much the 2 hours for PBL, you still have plenty of freedom and time to snack whenever you want. You just have to do it in the cafeteria...no biggie.

I actually found that running down the the caf for a break was nice. Actually, most people don't even study at school. Home and Starbucks are both more popular, I think.

It was two faculty (DO and a PhD for me) to one student my interview lasted the whole 30 minutes and they were asking each person in my group different questions. Both of my interviewers had NOT read my file. No super tough questions, none on healthcare or ethics.

Feelnfree to PM for details. I had a great first impression of the school and everyone was super friendly.
It was great to meet y'all!

👍 Yep. 2 interviewers and you. Both of my interviewers had reviewed my file because one asked about my GPA and the other commented on my MCAT score. Overall very relaxed interview. I'll be calling on wednesday to find out my results

I'm going to try to wait for the mail. I need the drama of envelope opening :xf:

Drama is overrated. Give me the answer nowwwwww hahaha Plus it gives me the opportunity to figure out how to make that 1500 deposit and not break the bank. Ugh I need a patient and to start working soon

Did Dr. Schoeffel ask anyone about their Facebook account? 'Cause he said he was going to, to try and freak you out...lol.

 that would have been epic. I didn't hear anyone mention it.

 that would have been epic. I didn't hear anyone mention it.

I didn't hear anything about that either. Although I would lead anyone through a tour of my fb page. It's pretty boring and mostly me blabbing about 1) science 2) working out 3) random pictures of my dog.

Did Dr. Schoeffel ask anyone about their Facebook account? 'Cause he said he was going to, to try and freak you out...lol.

One of the guys in my interview trifecta said he did get asked. He doesn't have an account (or so he says) so it was probably less funny than Dr. Schoeffel thought it would be. What I DO know is that I professional-upped mine last night.

On a semi related note, my next-day impressions of the school are definitely positive. There's just something about brushed steel that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The utilitarian, ordered nature of the campus was excellent and I was really impressed with the students in my pbl group. Smart, fast and not afraid to talk out their disagreements but only when it was appropriate. Cool place, could really see myself there.

As for the file-reading, I had the one-did-one-didn't situation. It's funny that DbDan and Peachy both had different situations, I wonder if its personal preference or the interviewer pairs decide together or what that determines it.

sounds like the interviews went really well for everybody! im actually gonna be flyin in today so ill probably just be preparing all the way up until the interview. ill be pullin for u guys to get that acceptance

"You look familiar, have you been here before?"
"Yaaaa I interviewed here last year also....."
"Oh great, well at least we know you like it here" lol

I think I talked to you when you first came into the PBL room. Did you go into the room with the group that was leaving late?

Good luck to everyone interviewing today 🙂

I'm getting excited for Monday!

Ditto! Except for the excited part, I hope there are not a lot of questions on healthcare legislation/etc., that is my only big worry lol.

Thanks guys! It went great!!! Though, I think DbDan did the best 🙂 My interview was the shortest actually, taking like 10 min! Everyone was shocked when I walked back in. Haha. Either I talk too fast, or they were just not interested... I guess I will find out next week!

Ok, one of the best things that helped me with my interview was looking at the feedback page and finding the top 50 most difficult questions... Then I printed it out and answered them. I feel that this really helped, and it seems that most of these questions were asked by all the different interviewers when we went. So I figured I would post it here for you guys since it was so helpful! Plus, going through the feedback page is kind of time consuming... 🙂

Good luck to those of you interviewing in the next few weeks!!! Let me know if you have any questions... The campus was the best part of the interview, its really beautiful. 🙄 And the med students and faculty were AMAZING. So nice and helpful. They all seem like they are part of a big happy family, they all want each other to succeed and help each other by supporting their peers in their studies. It was way different than what I thought most med schools were like. The learning environment was awesome.

Thanks!

🙂

Yeah, thanks noshie! I bet your interview only took 10 minutes because you walked in and they were like, "Psshhh, she's in, we don't even need to bother with this." 😀

The one question that I cannot think of a good answer to is the whole "Who would you invite to dinner?" one. I mean, do they expect us to pick someone in a medically-related field? Because the first thing that comes to mind for me is someone like Thomas Jefferson or George Washington... I would love to pick their brains, that would be the ultimate cool experience in my opinion, lol.

I prepped that one with one medically related person and one personally interesting person. I can't remember who medically related I wanted to have at dinner but I wanted to have either John Wooden or Vince Lombardi as the 2nd.

That sounds like a good idea, I'll figure out a person for both categories. Also, did you guys have to read the article and then summarize it to your interviewers? I read somewhere that interviewees had to do that last year, but I don't think anyone mentioned it yet, so are they still doing that?

Ended that two years ago. They didn't do it last year when I interviewed or this year.

Dan, did they say if you call Wednesday and are accepted, how long you have to pay the deposit? i.e., is it 30 days from Wednesday or 30 days from receipt of the letter?

30 days from the date on the letter, which will likely be Wednesday. It'd be too difficult to enforce 30 days from date received. Someone like me in Cali would get it 5 days after someone who lived in Fl. You could also lie and say it came later to get an extension. It'll likely be due on 10/1

Funzies. You still going to your AZCOM interview if you get in to LECOM-B? I thought I saw somewhere else you said you'd pay the deposit. I've been staring at PHX plane tickets for about 3 hours now, can't make myself pull the $400 trigger ha. I'm assuming we Monday interviewers will get to know our fate Wednesday as well.

The committee meets on Tuesday so ya, I'd say you'll probably find out Wednesday as well.

I'm definitely still going to AZCOM and I'd probably wait till after the interview to pay the deposit. Both because I know I like AZCOM already and because I'm broke currently

Yeah...I like AZCOM a lot as well, and I have a 9/17 interview. Problem is that the hubby was put on hold there, so he doesn't have an interview. He was told he'd go under review at LECOM-B this week, so hopefully he can score an interview there. So if he gets one I'm accepted, IDK if I should still go to AZCOM.......but ticket prices are going up up up so I should buy now just in case LOL And I know if I'm accepted at AZCOM, he can write and ask to be interviewed based on another couple who did this (earlier in the thread).

I should go ask Annette about the hubby on Monday...maybe she'd let me be the one to call and offer him the interview

Oh man, trying to get 1 person into med school is hard enough, try getting 2 into the same one!

Yeah same here, hopefully AZCOM doesn't take too long letting people know decisions. LECOM-B is my first med school interview so I have nothing to compare it to until my AZCOM interview.

You can always book the flight and add that insurance option that lets you cancel if you need to 🙂

Hey guys... I was just writing a PM about clubs at LECOM, and it occurred to me that the rest of you might find this useful as well:
www.lecombsga.com (SGA = Student Government Association)

Logically enough, the "Clubs" tab will lead to you a list of the student groups and links to a brief page about each one.

Ya, I have visited AZCOM before when my friend started there. I've been to Touro-NV and Western so I have a bit of comparison I suppose. I'm honestly praying that AZCOM makes their decisions early enough for me to make a decision on submitting the LECOM deposit.

Suit with coat. Absolutely. I've never seen someone interview in business casual. Better to be more formal if anything. Suit, shirt, tie, shoes. Look good and professional

Seconded. Remember a shirt and tie is our everyday dress code and you definitely want to dress to set yourself apart from that.

Been gone from SDN a while, but I've been looking back at the posts since July... Does anyone else interview on September 27? My secondary was processed August 11, and I got the call on August 23. I was surprised to get a date only a month away when others are saying they have dates in October now.

Also, can someone who has interviewed already tell me how long I can expect to be on campus for the day? My hubby, bless his heart, got all excited and booked my flight, hotel, and car without consulting me first... I'm supposed to fly out of Tampa at 5:40 pm on the day of my interview, but I'm worried that's not enough time to return the car, check in, etc... What do you y'all think?

The interview was over at 2:30pm, me and another SDNer that was interviewing had flights at 6:55pm... We had so much time in between that we went and looked at a few apartment complexes after the interview! Haha. And we had an hour drive to the Tampa airport and still made it in time! If we hadn't done all of that we would have definitely made it by 4pm if we had an earlier flight. I think you will be fine! The car rental return took all of 2 min and then we were off to the gate...

GOOD LUCK today Traitorman!!! You're gonna do great!

Yeah, like noshie said, you'll be fine. We got done around 2:15 or so and another interviewee and I drove to Sarasota and checked it out for a little while, we just got to the airport and our flights at 6:15 (out of Sarasota-Bradenton International). Tampa is like an hour drive or something so you should be fine.

Interview was so relaxed, just like you guys said! I can't believe they meet tomorrow, I'm so nervous haha. I loved sitting in on the PBL session, and the school far exceeded my expectations, I'm excited 😀

27th as well, see you there!!

So I interviewed last Friday and was under the impression that we were required to submit a DO letter after being offered admission. I received an email today stating that the admissions committee had "looked favorably" upon my file but will require a DO letter to complete the admissions process. I called and asked if this was an offer for admission and was told "not exactly" and that I won't be formally offered admission until the DO letter is received via fax. I guess this is a good thing, but the DO I shadowed hasn't been particularly accessible lately and I'm worried that a delay in LECOM receiving the letter could be a bad sign to them. Anyone else get this email?

Peachy, nmr, What do your portals say?

Dan, did you already turn in your DO letter? I turned mine in back when I got the interview. I didn't get a new email
