LECOM-Erie Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi Bonsante. I'm interviewing at PNWHSCOM and LECOM Bradenton so far but have applied here and am complete so HOPING to get an interview here too.
So far what has been your first choice and why?
I'd like to hear your feedback. You seem really level-headed.
Good Luck! Hope you hear soon!:banana::banana::banana::banana:

I just know PNWHSCOM is a relatively new school but nothing else. So I wouldn't much of help, you might want to ask somebody who already interviewed there. However, my first choice is definitely LECOM Bradenton out of all the schools I have been through so far. Not only they have 100% passing COMPLEX scores, I really like PBL. I am a type of guy who likes to read books and do things independendly and if there is something that I don't know or topic that captures my attention, I like to look it up and learn about it. Also, I like to discuss about things in a small group because it really enforces my retention ability and enhances my working memories so I can recall information better. The reasons why I like LECOM Bradenton are the following: 1) It's relatively cheap school compared to other osteopathic schools; 2) PBL Cirrculum; 3) The location and weathers of Florida; 4) Brand new school with clean facilities; and 5) I like the freedom to explore and learn things on my own. LECOM Erie is pretty much the same, except they have better rotation sites and Dr. Silvia Ferretti, Provost and VP, is a fantastic person from what I have heard. She has done so much for the community and osteopathic medicine so I wouldn't mind going to this school who has a great model for students or WVSOM (The reasons for this school are listed on my previos posts). All three schools have PBL. 🙂 If I were in your situation, I wouldn't be worried about which school is best and would focus on doing well on interviews and getting in. That's my opinion because it is kind of late, and I bet you know that, but don't allow it to bother you. Just be yourself and show them why you deserve to be there and a better applicant than the rest. People say osteopathic schools don't really look at GPA and MCAT. If you ask me, it's all crap. Numbers play a huge rule! Osteopathic medicine just attracts different types of people. Let me know if I could help you on anything else.

You're fantastic and echo alot of what I already think. Good to hear some confirmation. Thanks for the encouraging words. I'm sort of a dark horse in the race. It will be interesting to see what happens. I wish you the best, and thanks for everything.

Yes I know, I am a badass with a heart of gold. What can I say? j/k 😀

...

I believe one of the greatest strengths for a human is the ability to inspire confidence in others, and in order to that, one must be compassionate, empathic, and understanding of another human being's consciousness and feelings. Anyway, thank you, and I hope you will fulfill your endeavors too.

I just got my first interview!!! I will be interviewing at LECOM on March 28th. I am late in the game because I retook the mcat in January. I am very nervous because this is my first interview. I have done 3 mock interviews with science professors. Any advice? Typical questions that show up at this school? How long after the interview until you heard something? Any advice would be great. Thanks!

there are a standard set of questions asked to every interviewee by each committee. they've been posted previously in the thread, not sure where though. good luck. 2 wks to hear back. i just gave up my spot, so there's at least one more spot open!

Just finished my interview at LECOM. I think it went smoothly. One of my interviewers was quite tough, and strayed a little from the 9 question list, but oh well. Hopefully I'll be joining you guys in the Fall.

A question for anyone who was accepted a while ago....

Have any of you got an extension on that March 15 date for sending in a physical, titers, etc. Also, how much did you pay for those ridiculous titers. I have a feeling they are going to be like 600 bucks.

It depends on your insurance. I just had to pay my co-pay. However, drug and alcohol tests were not covered, and I had to pay for those. A word of advice... read the immunization form thoroughly and make sure the nurse takes care of everything so you do not have to make several trips. I guess I'll be sending my stuff in this weekend. (even though I am not finished with my hep b series...it takes seven months if you don't test positive/immune)

I have my interview at the end of March. I am from Texas and was curious as to what the weather is like up there right now. I have lived in Texas my entire life, so I'm nervous about the weather. It is snowing in Texas right now though!!! I am so excited and can't wait to move somewhere with FOUR seasons.

Haha Erie knows not four seasons.

sure we do...june 1 is spring, july 2 is summer, july 3 is fall and the rest is winter

/weather isn't as bad as i thought it was, but i'm from michigan so i'm kind of used to it

HAHA!!! Well what is the temperature like right now? Is a suit jacket and the slacks going to be enough to keep me warm right now there? Just a little assistance.

if your interview was today, you'd be a little cold (about 35 today). end of march you should be fine but i'd check the weather the day before. it was 60 three days ago...yet two days ago we got half an inch of ice. couple inches of snow due this weekend and then fifties all next week. march is kind of strange but the end of it should be more consistently around 50-55. good luck with everything, if you need any info shoot me a message

Thanks for the info on the weather.

What would you say the average price for a one bedroom apartment is in Erie?

I am also from Texas, and I just got back from Erie last week. The apartments there are actually pretty cheap considering its low cost of living. You can get a 1:1 for about 375-450.

depends on what you want to spend. i had a nice 1 bed 1 bath for 425 but they decided to remodel half way through my lease (which they told me might happen) so i'm living w/ someone else now and paying 400 for a huge two bedroom. you can go all the way up to 750 if you want to pay for it with a ton of luxuries but overall it's relatively cheap (at least cheaper than most cities i've lived in). if you want to share places you can get it as low as 200 a person for 3 bedrooms so it really varies with the top being about 750-800, the bottom being 375 for a one bedroom if you really hunt.

For current medical students, i know a laptop is needed. However, is a tablet really needed? I mean, if you have one, how often do you really use tablet features?

Hi I am currently searching for a place to live in Erie that is close to LECOM and cheap. Do you guys mind posting the name of the places that you have talked about that is affordable cause I will be looking for the apartments in April. Thanks!

Fyi: Matriculation Packets Due March 15th!!!

Leaving to drive to LECOM in a few hours... how is the weather out there?

I'm in! wohoo! decisions decisions :-/

I'm interviewing March 28. Any advice.

I'm in! wohoo! decisions decisions :-/

i would recommend anywhere but lecom erie...but i may be biased because i'm still waiting to hear back from them 🙂

congrats

haha, thanks everyone and good luck to those who are still waiting. I didn't think my interview went very well and thought there was no way I'd get accepted. I totally blanked and got really nervous on some of the questions and even used repeat/ridiculous examples for some. Guess I did ok though 😀

Does anyone else have an interview on Friday March 14?? Any suggestions on how to prepare from those who have already gone through?

They ask 9 standard questions (check interview feedback section of SDN to find out what they are). Very straight forward. Might also ask some other really basic questions, depends on your interviewers. Its 2 on 1, and they can choose open or closed file. You also have to read a really basic article (its like from a magazine or newspaper) and just summarize it at end of interview. I thought I bombed my interview a few weeks ago, but just found out I was accepted. So basically, just relax, be honest, and maybe prepare an example or 2 for each question if needed to better support your answers.

good luck!

Thanks a lot! Congrats on being accepted!

msu16: I also have an interview on the 14th!

others: Any ideas of how long after the interview until you get an answer??

p.s. This is my first post here, so hi all!! 🙂*waves*

It's around two weeks. They are fairly consistent in responding.

I also have an interview on the 14th!

Can someone tell me more about this summarizing the article thing? How much time do you get to read it?

You have 15 minutes to read this article. Don't take it lightly but don't sit there taking notes on it. Try to have a general understanding of the material, and make sure to throw in a couple of the intricate details when your summarizing. They are looking for your retentention capabilities, and your comfort with the material.

it's about a page and half or so. doesn't take that long to read and it's pretty easy to read material. it's not some scientific paper out of Nature or Cell. just read it thoroughly once and get the main idea. it's nothing to stress out over.

Quick question:

I know LECOM-Erie has a huge list of affiliated sites for 3rd/4th yr rotations, but which sites do most students actually go to? Are those all sites that you can rotate at or just sites that kids have rotated at in the past but arent necessarily doable anymore? Any advice on the topic would be great!

thanks

Hello, I heard that decisions were taking a little bit longer than 2 weeks. I interviewed 2/29. Let me know if you interviewed the same week and have heard anything. Thanks!

Actually it was more like five minutes, which was ample.

I don't interview until this Friday...but I hope it's not longer than 2 weeks 🙁... because that will be the most unbearable time of my life.

Good luck!! 🙂

Thanks, I'll take it. Hopefully they speed things up; the waiting game is killing my wife. Good luck to you too! Maybe you'll get some warmer weather than I did.

I really like the idea of PBL track. Would any first or second LECOM students that are currently in the track, describe briefly their experiences?

Just got back from my interview, I think it went well... They said letters are going out on friday so I should know by the middle of next week. But let me tell you that is one long drive from NYC to LECOM. Can't wait to find out

definitely more than two weeks. most of the people i interviewed with on the 11th and that week are just hearing back. although they are meeting twice a week now instead of just once so it may catch back up. good luck

unfortunately that's what they told us and it's been a month 🙁 like i said above, they're meeting more often now so you might get lucky and hear soon, good luck

1st 12 weeks is anatomy/histology/embryology with everybody else in the lecture discussion pathway. during this time you also do 4 cases in pbl, meeting once a week. This is extra and it sucks, but you can do it. they do this so you can figure out if you like pbl. the cases somewhat parallel what is going on in anatomy, so you can have some overlap. then you test on those 4 cases a week after anatomy ends.

if you don't like pbl, you can transfer out anytime before the end of anatomy, and someone else can transfer in. like i said, there is overlap with anatomy so if you transfer in at the last minute you won't be too far behind, but you also are stuck with pbl whether you like it or not.

after anatomy, you do 6-8 cases and then have a test. first semester, after anatomy, we did 6 cases. so your first semester grade for pbl is based on two tests. that can freak some people out.

second semester we have 3 batches of cases. 7, 6, and 8, with a test after each one. there is some other stuff like week-long modules for path and human sexuality in there too which is why the numbers are different.

so basically, i am at school for pbl 3 days a week. the sessions are 2 hours, but on the second day of a case we get done pretty quick. so we do basically 1 1/2-2 cases per week with about 100 pages of reading assigned for each case. we usually finish our cases with a week, week and a half to spare before the test, so in that time we just study our butts off trying to review around 700 pages of material.

because the tests are every 6 weeks or so, you get tempted to slack off, but you have to stay on top of it or you won't have enough time to review it all at the end.

you still have to go to omm lectures and lab, and sometimes there are other classes you have to attend.

personally, i love it. i don't learn well in lecture, and with the mandatory attendance policy, i'd hate the LDP pathway.
you also work through each case like you would for a real patient, and so you have to figure out what test to order and what kind of treatment you would use.
plus, 6 weeks of routine plus one horrible week is doable for me.
if you don't like reading, don't do it.
if you can't get along with people you disagree with, it may not be best for you either (or maybe it would be, so you can learn to get over it).

i could say more, but i'll stop here. if you have any specific questions just ask.

I interviewed towards the end of Feb and I just heard back last week. So a little under 2 weeks (or right around 2). Good luck to everyone

ps: any advice on my rotation question above??

I got accepted to LDP but PBL looks VERY tempting, especially after sitting in on a session at Bradenton. How would I go about switching in? Or can I switch in before classes start so that way if I hate it I can switch out? or maybe I should stick with LDP? ahhh

I'm not a HUGE fan of lectures but I do like being told what to read, etc. That being said, I think I could def. handle the whole PBL read-on-your own thing too. But PBL seems like I'd stay much more intrigued and enthusiastic about my reading/learning.....ahhh 😕

A few questions: 😕

1. Does anyone know how to actually talk to a real person in admissions and/or get them to call you back. A few weeks ago I got an email that said LECOM doesn't have my DO letter. Well, I obviously had my DO send the letter again, but I've called Elaine and Amy in admissions to see if they've received it at least 10 times and have left about 6 messages--nothing.
Does anyone have a direct number to call to someone who will actually speak??? This is driving me crazy. My interview is this Friday and I don't want to get there and have them not have my DO letter.

2. I sent a LOI earlier this semester updating with my Fall 07 grades and other new info. In the letter I also talked about my preference for LDP. I'm starting to grow on PBL after reading even more about it. Will it be bad if I change my mind on my preference once I get to the interview?? I don't want to look indecisive.

Thanks, and sorry to be so neurotic!
