LECOM-Erie Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A few questions: 😕

1. Does anyone know how to actually talk to a real person in admissions and/or get them to call you back. A few weeks ago I got an email that said LECOM doesn't have my DO letter. Well, I obviously had my DO send the letter again, but I've called Elaine and Amy in admissions to see if they've received it at least 10 times and have left about 6 messages--nothing.
Does anyone have a direct number to call to someone who will actually speak??? This is driving me crazy. My interview is this Friday and I don't want to get there and have them not have my DO letter.

2. I sent a LOI earlier this semester updating with my Fall 07 grades and other new info. In the letter I also talked about my preference for LDP. I'm starting to grow on PBL after reading even more about it. Will it be bad if I change my mind on my preference once I get to the interview?? I don't want to look indecisive.

Thanks, and sorry to be so neurotic!

call 814-866-6641 (it's the front desk) and when colleen answers ask for someone in medical school admissions and she'll patch you through. that's what i do when i want to talk to someone and it usually works out as long as it's not lunch or committee meeting time.

as for the pathways it doesn't matter, you get to rank them when you get to the interview. and even so, if after that you want to change your ranking you can call and ask and they'll try to accommodate. of course whether you can switch or not later depends on availability but the interview is the first real commitment to make (which like i said isn't the end all decision) oh, and don't worry about looking indecisive, just be sure when they ask you about what you want to do in the interview and you'll be fine, even if you change your mind later. what pathway you pick doesn't factor into admissions at all

So it's only been a day but I'm anxiously waiting to hear back from the school. Should I send a thank you note regarding my interview there?

it wouldn't hurt as a nice gesture but I don't think it will weigh much in whether or not you get accepted. FWIW, I did sent thank you letters to my two interviewers and i interviewed on the 6th. Haven't heard anything back yet but it's been less than a week, so who knows.

what kinds of things are they looking for when they ask "Tell us something that is not in your file"????

TLVoun4 hw did your interview go???

It was okay. Not great but not bad. There wasn't a question I blanked on but I should have elaborated on a few questions more thoroughly. Read those 9 questions they have and you should have no problems. They're all listed on the first page of this thread. One of my answers the interviewer did not like at all. He asked how I handled stress and I said I workout, play bball, or walk my dog to relieve my stress. Then he asked "but how do you deal with stress?" I really don't know what he was looking for, maybe, I yell, kick, and scream til I get what I want. iunno. overall it was aight but if you review the nine questions you'll have no problems.

anyone going to call in today? let me know if you do. I think I might.

i interviewed 2/11 and haven't gone to committee as of tuesday. they told me when i called that they're behind and kind of doing it at random starting from the beginning of the list.

Well this means I won't hear back for weeks and weeks 🙁

Is early June to late to start looking for a place to live?

I wouldn't think so... think about all those people who have to wait until two days before classes start and get called to move.

I hope it's not to early to look because I am headed out next week to find the perfect house for my wife. Stressful! I am starting to think an apartment might be the right solution. eh.

I'm driving out to Erie tomorrow to checkout the area again and maybe help me decide between schools (ahhh!). Hows the weather? Any cool sites/places around the area i should checkout?

Ok I have a HUGE decision to make TODAY! I was rejected at CCOM, but they transfered my app over to their graduate school. I have been accepted into the Biomedical Sciences program. It is a 2 year program and then 12 our of the 14 graduates are now in med school. Great right if you don't get in anywhere. I didn't think I would even get an interview when I was accepted to this program. Well I have to submit a $750 deposit today. If I decline my spot later I only get $100 back.

Well two days after that acceptance, I got my first interview at LECOM for March 28th. Yesterday I got an interview invite for KCUMB on April 14th. Just because I got an interview, does not mean I am accepted. I don't want to put down the deposit and then get in somewhere and lose $650. Yet I don't want to decline this offer and not get in anywhere.

Sorry for the long post, but what would yall do? My stats are 3.61 overall and 3.52 science with a 8p 8v 9b. I have 150 shadowing hours, vp of a big brother big sister organization, president of AED, counselor at a burn camp for kids, and cheered my first year. 650 is a lot of money to lose.

If it were me, I would take both the interviews and take my chances on getting accepted this year, but I also wouldn't want to take two more years of classes to get back to the point where I was before. You have good stats for LECOM and it sounds like good experiences, so I would say take the interviews and see what happens. If you don't get accepted this time around you can better your stats and the longest you wait to be accepted is another year, but again it depends on how quickly you want to become a doctor. Two more years is a good chunk of time to not be doing what you want as a professional. How badly do you want to go to CCOM? And how expensive is the tuition for the Biomedical Science program?

I thought I read in the AACOM Osteo Med College Info Book the both Lecom-Erie & Bradenton have a cutoff gpa of 3.3. Although I've seen applicants get into Bradenton (not sure about Erie) with a 3.15 cum and a sci of about the same in the last cycle. My gpa is between 3.0 and 3.2 - Should I still attempt to apply there?

I am taking the interviews either way. I just have the graduate program to fall back on to. I didn't know if the interviews right now are for waitlist or if they are still accepting.

I just got in with a 3.1 cum and 2.75 science. if your mcat is good you should be fine

id apply..but send ure stuff out ASAP..as long as u have the min mcat..and some good ec work..u shuld be good..but since its kinda late..it might put u on the waitlist if ne thing..(speaking from experience when i applied last year) and they ended up giving me a postbacc invite..but id still apply

You have good stats. If you don't get in this year, you will most likely get in somewhere next year. Did you apply late? Just apply early and broadly because your stats are good enough and you have good ECs. If you take the spot at the Biomed Science program, I think you'd be wasting your time and money. You'd put your career basically on hold for two years and you'll have to pay whatever the tuition/living expenses for that program. And if $650 is a lot to lose, if you goto the 2 year Biomed program you'll be out 2 years of physicians pay down the road.

Thanks for all of your input on my situation. I was complete back in November, but I retook the MCAT in January. All of the schools were waiting for that MCAT score. Just keep your fingers crossed that my two interviews go well. Hopefully I can get an interview at DMU and AZCOM also.

Admissions probably won't tell anyone how many spots are left. The best you can do at this point is mail it in and hope that it's not to late to get an interview.

Good luck on the interview with KCUMB!!

I completed my secondaries in late January. Does anyone have experience with typical hold times? Have had two interviews. How late should I wait to hear anything? I call but I most often get the run around about the status of the application.

Stats:
MCAT - 26Q
GPA - 3.1
Good EC, publications, shadowing, etc.

Advice?

I just interviewed on Friday (3/14) and they said "there are a few spots left in all the pathways," which is pretty vague. They also said that ISP often doesn't fill up until classes start, and it seemed the way they talked that PBL was getting pretty full.

Hope that helps a little...a real number would be nice. Sorry.

wonder why they are hesitant to give an exact #, could it be they want my app fee, i will have to think about applying to the school so late in the game, NSU did not even look at my app considering my GPA and MCAT were above their average

I don't know if this helps, but I interviewed on Feb 9th and when our group asked how many spots were left we were told the class was a little over 1/2 full.

have you heard back from them since your interview?

Hey dhvag...If I'm thinking right, I think you and I both interviewed on Feb. 29th? Anyways, I had called the school last week and a nice lady from admissions said that they are a little backed up and we should be hearing really shortly within a week or two. Hope that helps!! I continue to go to Church everyday because I want LECOM SO BAD.

I hope it works out for the both of us! I'll let you know if I hear anything. Let me know if you do. I swear my wife is already house shopping. If it doesn't work out this year, I'm getting everything in EARLY next time 'round. Church is always good - I haven't been in a while cause I work every Sunday. But if you're going everyDAY then ask for some good vibes for me too!😉

Hey everyone...interview on 3/10 and got my acceptance letter in the mail today:hardy::hardy::hardy:

Wow...congrats! Now that just worries me though...I interview a week before and still have yet to hear anything 🙁

Hey everyone! So I know orientation starts at the end of july, but does anyone know if we get any days off for holidays? Also, how long is our winter break and when do classes usually end in the spring? Thanks in advance! 🙂

Don't get worried yet, I believe they sent all the letters out on Friday, from the week you interviewed and the week I interviewed. So you should be seeing something in the mail this week! GOOD LUCK!😉

I thought LECOM went in order of when interviews were held. And do they send all letters (acceptances/waitlists/rejections) out at the same time??

Hey I was there on 3/10 do you remember where you were sitting? I was on the left side as we looked at the screen. I am also the Marine from NY, I'm just trying to put a face with the SN.

No letter yet, maybe tomorrow. I can't wait to get home. I might just go into work early to come home early and see what awaits me in the mail.

Thats so funny you asked, I was sitting right next to you to your left. I am sure you will be finding out within the next couple of days, good luck!😉 Oh, by the way are you going to do the military scholarship thing, because I am going forward with applying through the airforce.

Not sure but I think they sent all letters out on the 14th so keep your eyes out!

have you heard back from them since your interview?

Yes, I heard back about 10 days after my interview and got accepted to the LDR pathway. I just received my matriculation packet in the mail last week and am working on it, making sure I have all my shots etc.. up to date.

Oh now I remember you! 🙂 They didn't give up much time to talk among ourselves (unlike other interviews I've been on)

Yeah I'm looking at the Army since they have more residency options (from what I hear) I'm talking to a recruiter tomorrow and I many questions. I'm not going to let bonuses and what not pass me by like the last time I enlisted. FWIW I'm not sure you know but both the Army and Navy have a 20K enlistment bonus, not sure about the air force

Yeah, they didn't really give us much time to socialize. Anyways, I am going forward with the airforce, I am just having trouble getting a physical since I had ligament reconstruction on my ankle in November. Let me know what you find out, hopefully you will hear soon! GOOD LUCK!😀

Hey guys!

Any letters yet?? Didn't they say they were sending them out on Friday??

Stalking the mailman is noooo fun!

Stalking is no fun. But just gotta wait till the postman drops off all the junk mail and bills. Hopefully there will be more than crap in my mailbox today!
