LECOM-Erie Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How long do you guys wait to hear back before you call again? I called and left a message at LECOM-Erie and LECOM-Bradenton yesterday around lunch time. I heard back from Heather at Bradenton but not from Elaine at Erie yet. I'm just thinking if she doesn't call back today when next week should I try calling again without sounding like I'm harrassing/stalking her?

OMG I called today also to LECOM Erie, no one picked up. I didn't leave a message though. I hope I get an interview invite either today or tomorrow 😕.

Well I guess at least that means she's not available to call me back yet. The thing that stinks about waiting for LECOM-Erie is that they mail out the invites so every day I keep hoping something will come in the mail. It would just be really bad if I get rejected with my husband already having an interview. :scared:

I think it's best to email them. They rarely reply to voice messages. Then again they take a while to reply to emails, so I suggest you just keep calling until you catch them.

I emailed them, but no response back yet. I think I will call Monday just to see whats the hold up.

Although it seems like everyone who has gotten interview notices lately has received them 2 weeks late. So I guess Lecom is on a 2 week behind schedule, so thats some good news... LOL

does anyone know if there is anyone in the admissions office on the weekend? my interview invite was waaaay late getting to me and I need to confirm ASAP are they really strict about the confirmation date? I'm so angry at the postal service for getting me this letter two and a half weeks late

Yeah I think next week I will try to e-mail them too. I was mainly e-mailing schools but thought it was better to call to actually speak to someone. Oh and after the kick in the butt from Desi I thought it was a good idea. 😉 I'm pretty sure my husband e-mailed both the LECOMs and still hasn't heard back from either one. I could be wrong about that though.

I don't believe admissions works on weekends. That would be nice for us though. 😉 And I think they would understand your situation regarding not confirming your interview date yet; just call Coleen first thing on monday.

Interview invite for Dec. 10 😀😀😀😀. I guess I was wrong about the 2 week delay schedule, my letter was mailed out on the Oct 31st...😛

For all of you applying/have applied/ interviewed at Erie I wanted to share this so SDN members dont have any heart attacks while retrieving their mail.

So I am waiting to hear from Erie post interview and I got a very thin, one page letter in the mail today. I was like hmm this is a pretty fast rejection letter or very thin acceptance letter. It turned out to be a stupid recruitment letter asking if you want them to send you more info on the school or something. Just wanted to let everyone know. Take it easy.

Hey I received an invite for the 10th as well! Congrats!

Oh man that is a heart stopper. I'll be sure to keep an eye open for it. Thanks for the heads up.

I did not apply to LECOM and dont wanna start any fights but had a question to students currently or students graduated from LECOM.
I was speaking with a senior educational supervisor at a prominent metro detroit hospital about the whole process and was told that first of all there is hardly any bias when taking on residents concerning which osteopathic school they went to. These were for the osteopathic residencies, however I was told that they avoid students from LECOM. She told me something about how they dont like LECOM's curriculum and that the school itself doesn't do much to find good clinicals for their students. She also mentioned that the last clinicals at LECOM end in late July, just a couple days before residencies start.
What do you guys think about this? How much of this is truth?

I don't think it really matters what school you attend, its how much you make of it. Some people just have a personal bias against certain schools. Don't let certain people's bias deter you from applying to a school. I can't wait for my LECOM interview, I heard the college is top notch and so are facilities.

What hospital is this if I may ask? I have seen numerous LECOM students in Detroit hospitals and surrounding areas.

For me the 2 biggest advantages of attending LECOM are

1) Its relatively cheap compared to other schools
2) Its the 2nd closest school to my home (about 4.5 hours)

Although it does seem like a lot of people either decline their LECOM interview, or withdraw after their acceptance to go elsewhere. I wonder why? (I'm just saying this from looking at MDapps)

Hello everyone, I am an MSI at LECOM Erie and if you guys have questions you can feel free to PM me. Good luck with your interviews 🙂

I dont want to mention the hospital name or employee name because well...I feel like it was a personal meeting and dont want the hospital or employee to get into trouble. Maybe I'm being too cautious.
I mean there was a resident at that hospital from LECOM-Erie but I was told to avoid it at all costs...

Maybe they had a bad experience with a LECOM student. LECOM's match list is pretty nice. I haven't really found anything I dislike about the way they teach so far. Obviously they did pretty well with anatomy. We just got our shelf exams back and our average was about 20 points higher than the national average. (that is among all med schools, not just osteopathic)
It is a newer school, but they seem to really be trying to get better every year, and they seem to be doing a pretty good job.

Anyone know where I can find the match list for LECOM?

Also how is the town of Erie like? Is it a big city? Any diversity? just curious, I know I will find out in couple weeks but just wanted to know.

Well, as a 2006 graduate of LECOM-Erie, I find the above statement so unbelievably untrue. Infact, LECOM students are usually chosen over other schools due to its professionalism and dress code. Rotation sites love the fact that we have our paperwork in order and look and act like physicians. Sounds like that one person has a particlar grudge for some reason. There are tons of clinicals for the students and I personally rotated all over the country, set up many at allopathic sites as well. The curriculum is top notch and has many couses not covered by other schools especially on legal issues and running a business, how to land a contract, get loans paid, etc.

As far as clinicals. The last clinical ends a few days before LECOM graduation, a good three weeks before residency starts July 1st. The only reason someone would not make the July first date is if they failed the boards, had a baby, or required some other type of extention.

Erie is a city of about 200,000. Small by most terms. It is a place where people are born there and never leave - ever. It is an old industrial town where the inductries are closing one by one and is not turning into more of an academic opportunity community. It has 3 univeristies, PA school, nursing school, nurse anesthetist, DO school, and Pharm,D.

Erie is very easy to get around. The traffic is not bad. It takes about 30 minutes to get from one side to the other. The school is right in the center. There are quite a few middle eastern folks there, of course african american, some asian. Be sure you have good snow tires. They get about 300+ inches of snow a year. The school does not close due to snow. Rotations do not stop due to snow. Erie is on an incline so 4WD is most helpful. The good thing is that snow melt quickly so the main roads stay pretty clear.

Just so you guys know, LECOM admissions do not work on the weekend. Remember that Erie is in Eastern time so be wary of the time difference from where you are. Colleen man's the phone at the front desk from 7-4:30. After that you will get the message machine or it goes to security. As far as Elaine Morse, well she's probably late 60's and maybe had a stroke in the past? She's not the quickest person to have to deal with. She will never call but does answer her emails fairly timely historically. Just keep emailing her because I think sometimes she forgets that she hasn't written back.

Be sure you have the correct number for the front desk
814-866-6641

Good luck everyone.

For all who are patiently awaiting responses from Erie after an interview...

I interviewed on Oct. 18th, and on Saturday, Nov. 3rd I received an acceptance letter in the mail. Letter was kinda thin, and in a regular-sized envelope, which had me worried when I first saw it. But then I noticed 3 pages inside, and thought "would it take them 3 pages to say no?" Hehe...

Besides being crazy excited, I wanted to give you all the details of timing/format, etc... so you know what to expect and look for! Good Luck!🙂

Thanks! I went ahead and e-mailed her today since she hadn't gotten back to me by phone. I really really really want an interview there!

I made the mistake of not paying attention to the interview confirmation deadline and didn't realize this until almost a week and half past the date. Granted, I didn't receive the letter until about a week after it was dated, I just called to confirm as if nothing was wrong and no questions were asked. So either somebody just missed that, or else they aren't super strict about the confirmation deadline.

I would make sure to confirm on time just in case, for everyone else out there.

thanks all, I called Colleen today and it was all cool. I'll be there for my interview on the 16th. Interestingly enough, my C- in orgo I doesnt play a roll in whether I'm accepted or not. It only matters if I decide to go there I have to have it complete with a C or Higher by the time you start. So all those in similar situations out there. There is hope!

For those of you who have already interviewed...
Did you rent a car? Hotel recommendation? Erie seems like a place that is fairly easy to get around. I am thinking of taking a flight out at 4:45 on interview day. It looks like the interview goes till 1 so I think this should leave me enough time.
Any thoughts are appreciated...thanks!

I actually drove to Erie, but a couple of other people just took taxis to and from the school. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express near the water park (I think it's called Splash Mountain or something?) and it was only about 3 miles away. I'm not sure if they have a shuttle service, you might have to ask them.

You should have plenty of time. They offer for you to sit in on a class or something after the interview but you don't need to (I didn't) and if you are flying out of Erie, the airport is very small and you won't have any typical larger airport issues.

You can get discounts on hotels if you mention LECOM. I stayed at the Comfort in on 12th street, it was nice and pretty close and had a good breakfast. There is a chance they have a shuttle but I forget.

Has anyone who interviewed around October 26th heard anything back yet? I have been checking my mailbox anxiously everyday since!!!

Stay in the Marriott, they offer a free shuttle from the airport and you can also ask them to drop you off and pick you up from LECOM. Also the 4:45 will be fine.

It turned out it was actually faster just to e-mail. I got a response today that my LORs were all received but no actual update on my status. I guess I just have to try to be patient.

Don't worry, just give it a couple weeks. I am pretty sure you will get an invite. 👍

Thanks, I sure hope so. I guess after the reject from Bradenton I'm feeling more cup half empty. I'm trying to follow my husband's lead and take no news as good news. Now that he has an interview at AZCOM also I check the mail hoping there won't be a thin letter for me from them and when there isn't I consider it good news. I'm trying to be positive but it's so hard!!

I understand completely, just try to be positive. I just came back from work and found out I was wait-listed again at MSUCOM. I feel a little (OK ALOT) down, but what can I do. Just keep your head up, you have an interview already, try to nail it.

Good Luck, I really hope we can be classmates!!!

Wait, you were just waitlisted post-interview? That's craziness desi! It's good though that other schools see your potential and I'm sure you'll be accepted somewhere. Maybe once December 14 hits we'll be bombarded with interviews. 😀 I will work on trying to be positive. I can do it, just takes more effort than I would have thought. It would be great to be classmates!

I interviewed October 26th and received my letter today. I wanted to wish everyone the best of luck with everything and to stay super positive! Good luck everyone!

Thanks for all the info! Sounds good to do the Marriott and avoid the car rental (after all my name is onelesscar...and there will be no biking from CO to the interview 😉

It looks like there were 2 Marriotts-Courtyard and Residence-know which one?
Thanks!

Just to let you guys know who are considering LECOM-Erie that we scored above average on the NBME anatomy shelf exam 🙂

The national average was 494; class of 2011 as a whole averaged 513. :hardy:

That is good to hear. I will be attending next year, Class of 2012.

Hmm... I got an interview invite before some of you guys but it is for January 7th... any reason they gave you guys earlier invites?

What learning pathway are you in? If it is PBL could you let me know how it really is from a student perspective. I was accepted into Erie on 11/7 for PBL.

Thanks!

I am not in PBL, I'm sure someone on here is. However my friend just transferred into it last week so I can just tell you what I know from that. They meet for 6 hours a week discussing case studies and coming up with learning objectives, and there is a professor there for their meetings. And she has to attend OMM lecture & lab. Recently they have been having "workshops" a few hours a day she has had to go to, to learn EKG and pharmacology, etc. but that is rare and will be over soon I think. Her group has about 9 members in it, and while I (in LDP) take tests about every 1-2 weeks, the PBLers had their test this previous Monday, and their next test will be right before Christmas break. So me personally, I could never do PBL because that is just way too much material/reading on one test, but that is a personal preference. She also had to buy all her books at one time since its not structured by classes.

Did you sit in on a PBL session? I think you should hang onto your PBL spot because you can always switch into LDP at a later time, but you probably won't be able to get back into PBL so easy. Also I assume you know that for the first 12 weeks all the pathways are together.

Anyway hopefully someone else on here that has personal PBL experience can post. Congratulations on getting accepted!

Me too, PBL all the way!

Thanks for all the info!👍

No I did not get a chance to sit in on a PBL session. I am going to sit in on one at my interview at WVSOM. I have another question🙂. They never really specified what classes (besides anatomy) are taken the first 12 weeks. Could you let me know what classes are taken in the first 12 weeks?

Thanks!

We took histology (the whole 12 weeks), embryology (the whole 12 weeks), spirituality, ethics and medicine (one class) which lasted i think a month and half or something and health care management (part 1) which lasted a week and a half. As for PBL (I'm ISP) they do other classes while they do these classes but my understanding is the quizzes they take during this time don't count for a grade until after the 12 weeks are over.

I was notified by snail mail just over two weeks after my interview. (Although it was postmarked one week after the interview) So if you live closer than Utah you might get it a little sooner. It was pretty fat with 5 to 6 pages of info.

Don't for get OPP and OPP lab!🙂
PBL here...PBL does meet once or twice a week during the first 12 weeks, but the students choose what topics to learn, and everyone just chose stuff that was already being taught in lecture (i.e. embryo, histo, anatomy). This just helped to solidify stuff. Also, PBL got a week off of classes to study for the first pbl exam after the 12 weeks were over.
After that, pbl groups meet 2-3 times a week...usually 3. As for quizes, these never count for a grade, ever. They just help you to stay on track and know where you are weak, so that you don't get behind between exams.
😍pbl
Good luck all!
