I'm an IMG ..willbe starting residency in the states. I'm a canadian citizen at present and plan to be back here after residency. How does that work? Is the US license valid or does one relicense?

You have a long climb in front of you.

Contact the college of physicians and surgeons in your province about the requirements for recognition of your non-canadian credentials. Their rules are often complex, and while US residency training will help you, you might not be able to return to cdn.

Also, contact the RCPSC about the requirements to get your US residency training recognized for the RCPSC exams. In some specialties, you will need an additional year of training past the regular length required in the US. Also, some of the RCPSC exams have an almost 2 year lead time.

In BC you might avail yourself of the option to practice in a rural area short of physicians for a while until they recognize your training. Licensing requirments for these area of need jobs are rather lax and people who wouldn't be able to get a regular registration for BC can get licensed to work in a place like '100 mile house'.
