We put an offer on a place yesterday and we are waiting to hear back if the offer was accepted or not. The waiting sucks and every time the phone rings we jump at it. Hopefully we will be getting the phone call soon

The school looks great. THey finihsed the brick work on the third side of the building and only have the fourth side, which is small, left. THe new road that goes from DCOM to 25 is going to be nice. THey have it laid out and ready to be paved. We never had the chance to get inside and talk to faculty or administration b/c of the house searching and everything. I'll post some pictures later on today.

The golf course in KY is about 10-15 min from DCOM, right up 25 to Pine Mountain State Park. It is a great course and it looks very challenging.

We also found another course in Tazewell named Wood Lake. Again, the course is very beautiful with tons of elevation changes and difficult shots. The prices are fantastic ($34 weekdays and $42 weekends, includes cart). I am excited to play this one too.

Would you golf lovers take in a newbie? I would love to play more, I am just not the best. But I figure if I am going to be a doctor, I need to learn the business side of things right? 👍

Between not finding anything special, the draw of the kids staying in their school, and MJB posing the question, we may decide to stay here in West Knoxville and try commuting. It's a long way but ifI hate it, we may move next summer. The decision hasn't been made, but we are going to mull it over next week while we are on vacation.

So they are pulling from wait list as students drop out!! That's good news.
I visited DCOM last wk and the office said they had lost 15 students so far, an avg of 1-2/wk for two months now.
They expect a few more in June/July as late letters arrive.
The stats look good for our class...GPA 3.4 MCAT 24.7 (one 37 😱😍)

I would not try to commute more than 30min's during 1st yr of med school 😱😱😱😱😱, 75min's + is crazy.
The stories I hear from 1st/2nd yr students are: How many hours will I sacrifice to sleep.... If you commute 1hr, that's 10hrs/wk.

Good luck finding something closer !!

We hear you on the frustration of home buying. The offer we put on a place was rejected by the builder b/c he does not want any contingency based on selling a place. Also, he wanted full asking price and doesn't seem to want to budge from that. Our realtor was really surprised that the builder was acting like such a butthead, but we will see what happens. We are going to see if the builder will work with us once we have a contract on our condo b/c we really loved the house. But if the condo takes too long to sell or the builder is hard headed, then we will put an offer on another place. I agree in that this month will be freakin' crazy.

That's a bummer about the house nd...but in my experience, builders have rarely come off of asking price on new construction. Hopefully it works out for you.

The most interesting thing to me about this home search is that it seems to CLEARLY be a buyer's market in North Knoxville right now...stuff is either selling in a few days, or isn't moving...and the guy we offered isn't budging on price even a little bit....and all parties involved (including his realtor) but him seem to agree that he's about 6K high right now.

Hey DCOMers, I just returned from a 4-day excursion to Harrogate to look for houses and explore our new homes. I gathered some great info on the area and I may be starting a roommate search soon. male orfemale are welcome to talk to me about it and we may be able to work something out if you already paid your deposit to the school. both places we are considering bidding on are really nice, really close(at least as close as the dorms), and should be cheaper. I will post detailed pics when I know where I will be for sure.


anyway, I must immediately clear up the idea that Harrogate is dry. They are allowed to sell wine and beer(no liquor) in Harrogate, but not in M-boro. There was actually no shortage of beer and wine stores along 25 as we explored. There is a great pizza/bar place about two minutes down 25 from the school called Oasis. I'm sure it will become popular during the school year and they have live music on Thursday nights.

As far as other amenities, there is a Wal-mart and a little mall in M-boro off of 25. there is a movie theater in the mall with a few screens and the tickets are only $1.50!!! we got two sodas, a large popcorn, and two tickets to pirates of the caribe for $10.25. I am yet to meet a single person that has not been extremely friendly.

As for the scenery, the lake is huge, gorgeous, and honestly only maybe 30 minutes away from us. my dad said the only thing better than having a boat is having a friend with a boat. there is also skiing in gatlinburg which is probably about 1.5 hours away from us. we really have something for all seasons if you want to get away for a day during the weekend. the weather was gorgeous and I went up to the pinnacle and it really was excellent. we managed to get some great pics of my dad and i straddling civil war cannons.

lastly, i snuck into the school on the weekend and snapped some photos of the progress inside including pictures of the two lecture halls and the main entry way....i will post those later this week. let me know if you have any questions about the area and please send me messages if you are interested in rooming and we can discuss details (much more info to come on that front). alright, later

Is this a house in Union Court?

No, a subdivision in Jacksboro actually. We figured the builder wouldn't budge too much, but since there is a house that just sold that is very similar and $15K cheaper, our realtor thought our offer would be a good starting point. We are going to talk to her on Tuesday and see what our options are. We have a few other houses we really liked, so we may put a bid on one of those instead. I guess one advantage is that the other homes are a few miles closer to DCOM than Jacksboro, although the drive isn't too bad. I will keep you all updated.

You will be happy to know that there is actually a lot of snow skiing in the area. Not only in Gatlinburg, but close in Virginia too. There are really good slopes only about 1.5-3 hrs away!

I was told everything had to be in by July 15th, including financial aid stuff. I finally cleared up that identity theft crap and my credit report is again clean. So I just finished applying for the loans today and sent in the financial aid forms.

Changing oil isn't too bad depending on the car you have. My 95 blazer is super simple, but my wife's 95 t-bird is a royal pain in the a$$. I changed her oil one time and afterward, I told her I will never do it again. I'd rather pay someone else than to do it myself. Getting the oil filter off on her car sucked and whoever designed it deserves a Thankfully, we just sold her car and she will be getting a new one after we sell the condo. I will be too. I'd be glad to help you out. What kind of car do you have? If it is a t-bird, you are SOL.

Ha, I actually had my brother-in-law show me how to do my Tundra last weekend. It was a piece of cake, except I underestimated the amount of liquid 4.7 Liters trully is. What kind of car do you have. The truck was easy because of its ground clearance.

When draining the oil, I chose a container for the oil to fall into. This was not large enough to hold all of my oil, and now my father-in-law had a nice oil stain on the driveway. (My father-in-law keeps a drum of old oil to safely discard for those environmentalists who care😉)

OK, I feel better now. When I read it, I know you meant the engine size, but then I though you correlated that to how much oil and I was like 😱. But you are all good now. I had a nice oil spill when changing the oil of my wife's car, hence I'll never do it again. I had to go buy a nice, big bag of kitty litter to clean it all up.

I was looking at a website for info b/c I've never heard of a propane kit for a car. The kits they sell are for off-road vehicle like rockcrawlers, etc. not for an everyday car. They have a disclaimer on their website (www.gotpropane.com). Also, the kits were only for 1986 cars or older as, according to the website, it is illegal to tamper with a newer car to make it street legal. If you decide to do the conversion, I'd check with somebody to make sure you don't violate any thing b/c that could be expensive. But it is a pretty cool idea for an off-road type vehicle like a rock crawler. You might be better to just stay with gasoline. It is about $0.50 cheaper in TN than in the chicago area, so that is good. And since you are staying in the apartments, you could go for a month without filling up, depending on how much extracurricular activities you are doing in Knoxville.

Then you can just drop them off by the door of the shop and they will take them from there. Really the only tools you will need is a wrench for the oil drain plug and an oil filter wrench. I recommend the ones that look like a can cut in half. They fit on the end of a socket wrench and make the job super easy. They come in different sizes, so all you have to do is go to your local PepBoys, AutoZone, CarQuest, etc. and find the oil filter for your car (there is a catalog attached to the shelf where you can look up the filter number based on your car) and once you have the filter, go to the filter wrenches and find the one that works with your filter. I've tried the strap type oil filter wrenches and I don't like those as much, but some do. You can probably change the oil yourself for under $15 depending on the oil you use (if your car uses regular oil, then use that as you can't mix traditional and synthetic oil - it can hurt your engine).

yeah, I use synthetic, so changing it myself costs me about the same as having Jiffy Lube do the normal oil change, but the synthetic is supposedly better. Why is it that you can't change back and forth between the two?

Yesterday, my son-in-law (who is waitlisted at DCOM) and daughter visited the school and spoke with Paul Carney. Apparently, from now on the procedure will be that as soon as someone withdraws, the committee will meet immediately to select a replacement from the waitlist. The class was full as of yesterday. The waitlist will be divided into three groups. The upper group will consist of those with higher MCATS and GPA's who live within an eight hour drive of the school and have expressed an intention to practice in Appalachia. The middle group will be non-locals with higher MCATs and GPAs and the lower group will be non-locals with lower MCATs and GPAs. Mr. Carney didn't specify what was considered high or low scores and grades. They anticipate, but cannot predict with any certainty 1-2 withdrawals every one to two weeks. They thought that rate of attrition would be steady throughout the summer. Mr. Carney was apparently very cordial and happy to talk to my son-in-law, but not encouraging either. I am posting this information with my son-in-laws blessing because he knows how hungry you all are for information. Good luck, everyone.
