I'll believe this when I see stats. US might not be #1, but i doubt difference from #1 is more than a couple of % points on most key stats. compairing 300 mill in US to 4mill in Norway is not really realistic. I have plenty of horrer stories from the "supurb" socialized system in Norway 🙁.

Here is an eye opener:

Follow this link. This an EP's blog. The post is old, but very well written. It is a rant about his experiences with our poor health care policy and the Universal Health Care policy already in place - the ER. He references a pt who actually committed a crime in order to get the heart cath he needed! It is a great read

Does anyone know if there is a closet or a place to hang clothes in the med school aparments?

The floorplans on the website show a storage space so you should be OK. I guessing it is not all that big, but I'm sure that can be worked around using plastic bins and such.

since we got an acceptance on house 5miles down 63...😍 I can point people to a very nice rental.

I've been holding a 3 bedroom /2 bath in nice area, 8 miles down 33. he wants $700 furnished. rooms are good size, big kitchen and nice deck.

omgomgomgomg... do they allow pets? I have one dog that's a real sweetheart! I'd rent that in a second if they do allow it.

i too would like an iphone...but i cant justify 500 bucks for a phone. the ER is socialized medicine w/ only a partial reimbursement. what areas of medicine are y'all going into? im thinking hard about emergency medicine right now. in 3 years we'll see. how about you guys?

Peds in some shape or form...maybe er, infectious disease, critical care, or general.

Somehow my reply got mangled.

My point was that 2.3 times more, of a small number does not a big number make.
Iceland might have a infant mortality rate of 3/1000 and 2.3 times that is only 6.9/1000.
So that is a success rate of Iceland 997/1000 = 99.7% and US 993/1000=99.3%

Everything is relative.😎

If I had to pick something right now, I would probably say EM too. But I am not opposed to anything now. I really want to have a family life, so I will do my best to pick a specialty based on that. Does that mean I won't do surgery, no, but I wouldn't rank it high on my list right now. Things will change so many times before having to make the decision anyway, so we'll see.

I think I remember DocMom saying something about wanting to go into Rural FM, but I can't say for sure. She never seemed to make herself very clear :meanie: 😛

I'm strongly considering IM, but I really have no idea. Optho is interesting to me, as well as a couple others.

That being said, if someone offered me a residency at UT right this second, I'd probably take it. That's probably my body still screaming at me from loading the moving truck last week.

FYI, I highly recommened ABF Upack...so far.

Hey everyone,

I'm new here to the website but I just got into DCOM off the waitlist 😀 so I thought I'd try to hook up with you all. It seems like a great forum.

Congrats and welcome!!! SDN is a great site and us DCOM people are a good bunch. In order for you to be official though, you must say hi to Pete the Pony. He runs the underground network at DCOM. :meanie::meanie: Congrats again!

Sounds great you'll have to put me in touch with Pete the Pony, he sounds like someone to know 😎

Does anyone know if there is a closet or a place to hang clothes in the med school aparments?
In the one-room apts there is a closet at the entrance with four drawers at the bottom, and then there are cabinets above the counter over by where the desk is going to be (as seen in the pictures on the LMU/DCOM site). I don't really remember the location of the closets in the two-room apt though. I hope this helps! 😀

Does anyone have any info on rental homes in the area? I have two kids so the school housing won't really work for me. Thanks again!😛

Rental houses go really fast in the area, so you'll have to be quick about it. You can check out www.middlesborodailynews.com in the classifieds if you want to find some places.

More kiddos at DCOM!!! Although the magic number seems to be four, shasta is half way there

I wonder how froggie's doing and if they had the baby yet? 🙂

Welcome and congrats!!!! 😀 How old are your kids? I am sure they would love Pete the Pony. He is a CUTIE!!!! 😍

Yes, I will indeed be going into rural FM. Sorry if that point wasn't clear before Nascar. LMAO!!!😉😛

We used Self Moves USA. It was a lot cheaper that Upack. Same concept though, but the truck doesn't have a ramp. We got the entire 28 foot truck for $1650 though. What we did was get one of those $19.99 Uhaul rentals, backed the Uhaul to the truck, and rolled the heavy stuff onto it. Sounds complicated, but it was a lot cheaper than renting a ramp and we actually needed the Uhaul to go pick up couches. Other movers were $4000 and Upack was $2400. Just an FYI.

On the topic of couches, there is a Berkline Outlet Center in Morristown that has REALLY cheap couches and chairs. By cheap I mean rocker-recliners for $159, couches for $299, sectionals for $399. Everything is in perfect condition too. I highly recommend checking it out.

Also, thanks to all those who offered to help us unload the truck. My husband and I were able to unload it ourselves, (well, along with the help of my Medrol dose pack. LOL!) Anyway, thanks for the offer. We appreciate it. My piano is sitting out on the porch, but it did make it to TN. I believe most of the boxes are unpacked now and we are getting settled in. I am really looking forward to school and to meeting everyone soon.

:biglove:

I just got a house! After seeing 30 houses, this is the best one and we were very picky. It's beautiful and located on Lincoln Memorial Estates. It is closer to the school than the dorms and I NEED AT LEAST ONE ROOMMATE!

If you've already put down a housing deposit, we can give you $50 bucks off the first four months rent. It will probably ultimately be cheaper than living in the dorms also.

HOUSE INCLUDES: 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, front patio, large back porch, two car garage, living room, fireplace, washer and dryer, all appliances, my dad and i will be fully furnishing it

Large bedroom (13.5'x10')rent is $700 + util
Small bedroom (10'x10')rent is $500+ util

Each room will have full size bed, dresser, and desk included. Both bedrooms open on to front patio for excellent views. Surrounded by hills and trees on three sides. Large bedroom gets priority use of the other spot in the garage.

I have tons of pics from every angle, but I can't remember how to post them. So either tell me how or PM me and I will send them to you. I"m very laid back and fun to live with and I also keep things pretty clean. Male and female are both welcome to apply.

Please PM me if you have any interest or want any info. I can also receive messages on facebook.
My name is Blake Spiegel.

Thought you guys might like to know that the UT Lady Vols are playing against Arizona for the NCAA Softball National Championship. It will air on ESPN 2. It will be a great game tonight and I am sure everyone in TN is wearing their orange proudly tonight!!! GO VOLS!!!

Thanks all for the warm welcome, and thanks Marthea007 for the link. I'll be sure to check it out. My kids are 11 and 8 and that will be all for me. My diaper days are done😀

I got the call from Dr Leo yesterday and they are sending my packet and letter today. I am still waitlisted at LECOM-Bradenton and TOURO-NV.

Again thanks for the welcome. You'll be seeing more of me here and in TN.

Sorry to the Lady Vols' fans but I AM from Tucson. GO Cats!

Pets?

i mean, i wouldn't be against it...but it really would be a case by case thing based upon how much they shed, how well they are trained, and how much noise they will make.

does anyone remember which thread had everyone's relationship status on it? or does some one want to copy and paste it over here?

Did you see that Lala got into LECOM-B! Congrats to her. I'm sure you are next! 😀

I didn't because I only click on this thread if I come to SDN. It is just too painful to wait for the pages to load to spend much time around here now. LOL! Anyway....

CONGRATS LALA!!!! WOOT!!!! I AM SOOOOO HAPPY FOR YOU!!! WAY TO GO DOC!!!!   :biglove: 😀 👍

going off the specialty question, you guys should try this out:

http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/

its a test that helps predict which specialty you would go into. I always have urology or EM #1, ortho #3, rads #4, and anesth #5. post what results you guys get, its really interesting.

HELLO EVERYONE😍
-shasta, congrats on your acceptance:clap:
-DoctorAcula, congrats on your house:clap:
-nascar, thanks for your help :biglove:
-doctormom, nice to see you again, it's been ages LOL
-Marthea, your dog is so cute, i totally understand. I would not move anywhere without my russian blue 😀, best of luck in finding a place that is dog friendly:luck:

ok i am back to brainstorming for the DCOM secondary essays (primaries and transcripts are sent out...now just waiting for the damn, very damn MCAT:scared::luck:)

this test was awsome. They ask you the same questions over and over again. Typical psychological test.
Here is what i got: #1 radiology , #2 plastic surgery, #3 rehabilitation, #4 thoriatic surgery
LOL...and i seriously thought about doing FM😕
but then plastics was something i was interested in for the entire time i had an idea of being a doctor 😀 and i am extremly visual and detail oriented so i wouldn't mind looking at pictures all day either 🙂

1) Rads 2) nuclear med 3) path 4) optho 5) pulmonology ... 29) EM

Rads would be cool, but would have to be interventional rads

Path would be cool, at least forensic path. I wouldn't mind doing autopsies - kinda cool. Good hours and no malpractice insurance - you can't kill 'em twice :meanie:

I really like EM, but you never know once I start the rotation as student and not a shadow.

i think money wise this is one of the best practicies one could do.
Zero stress (since you can't kill'em twice:laugh:), 9-5 kinda job, quite interesting, you can listen to all the music as loud as you want without nurses complaining, and ofcourse you will be saving 60-80K a year on malpractice insurance😀
but then it becomes more of being a scientist rather then a doctor.
I would prefare alive patients, the interaction etc...

1. nuclear med, 2. med oncology, 3. urology, 4. ob/gyn, 5. ortho surg, 12. EM, 17. inf disease, 29. peds...

Well, I guess the low peds was because I said I was neutral in following pts lives long term. I have considered 1 and 2, I would never do 3, 4 would be fun but the hours are just toooooooo long, I have no interest in surgury b/c of the long residencies and that was like 5-8 for me...EM would be fun, as would inf disease.

That was a fun test!

that test was great!

I actually got peds as #1... which is what I want, but then rheumatology as #2, something I've never thought of... very interesting!

congrats froggie!! :biglove:

and welcome shasta! :hello:

it's 1500 square feet. there is also a dishwasher...which is an amazing thing to have while in school

i mean, i wouldn't be against it...but it really would be a case by case thing based upon how much they shed, how well they are trained, and how much noise they will make.

Hmmmm, ok. If my search for a rental doesn't work out I'll be getting in contact with you.

This story made me laugh...just imagine driving down the highway and seeing this...poor guy, but still...😆

PAW PAW, Mich. - A man was taken on a wild ride when his wheelchair became lodged in the grille of a semitrailer and was accidentally pushed down a highway for four miles at about 50 mph, authorities said.

The 21-year-old man, whose name was not released, was unharmed but was taken to a hospital as a precaution. He had been secured to his wheelchair by a seat belt.

“The man spilled his soda pop, but he wasn’t upset,” said Sgt. Kathy Morton of the Michigan State Police.

About 4 p.m. Wednesday, a caller told police dispatchers, “You are not going to believe this: There is a semi truck pushing a guy in a wheelchair on Red Arrow Highway,” state police said in a release.

Prank call?
Authorities initially wondered whether the report was a prank call until others called with similar reports.

Officers stopped the truck — wheelchair still attached — at a trucking company. The driver didn’t believe officers until he stepped from his cab and saw for himself.

“When he saw us, he was like, ’What’s going on?”’ Morton said.

An investigation revealed the man in the wheelchair had pulled in front of the truck at a gas station and it somehow became lodged by its handles to the front grille.

I wonder how froggie's doing and if they had the baby yet? 🙂

Well, Mrs. Frog gave birth to a male tadpole yesteray morning at 7:55AM. He was 6# 13 ounces, 19.5 inches, and scored a 9/10 on his APGAR test. Mom is doing great, baby is doing great, and Mr. Frog is so excited. I will keep you updated. If you want to see pictures, check out my facebok. If you need the page PM me.

Oh, and some realy cool news for DCOM.

My sister-in-law is best friends with a resident at Loma Linda in California. When she told the doc that I was heading to DCOM, the resident was excited. Apparently we have made news for pulling in some great faculty, and having such an awesome building to study in. According to the resident, DCOM is expected to be one of the top schools within the next 4-10 years.

And it would figure that the middlesboro daily news just updated their housing lists today and already the one house for rent is gone. BAH!

HELLO EVERYONE😍

-doctormom, nice to see you again, it's been ages LOL

EEK!!!! There is no way this test is right!!!! I took another one on a different site before and it was completely different. My FM is all the way at 12!!! LOL! But, peds is first. I would NEVER do #s 2, 3, 4, 5, or 8. You couldn't pay me enough money to go into one of them. YUCK! I guess the fact that IM, peds, and OB/GYN are in the top ten is a good thing, but I have no idea why FM is all the way at #12. It ranked at the top in a different test before. I usually get psych near the top too. LOL! Well, that was fun.😀
